Abstract:

This thesis will analyze José Clemente Orozco's mural The Epic of American Civilization in terms of the problem of suffering. It will focus specifically on two panels, “Human Sacrifice in Ancient Times” and “Human Sacrifice in Modern Times.” This analysis will comprehend not only the works of art within their historical context, but also within Martin Heidegger's philosophical discussion of the question of suffering. Heidegger presents a unique perspective on the question of human suffering when he writes that Western humans have forgotten how to “dwell.” This dwelling is defined by Heidegger's novel conception of ontology as relational rather than individualistic. According to this theory, humans must identify themselves through their associations, both with other people and with things. Without these associations, humans are not be able to escape the anxiety associated with suffering and death brought about by the isolating effects of Western modernity. A discussion of Mexico provides a practical example of the complexities of the question of dwelling in Western thought. At the time Orozco was painting his mural, Mexican identity was rapidly fragmenting. In the decades after the Mexican Revolution, many artists wrestled with the concept of Mexican identity, and it was in this time of flux that Orozco offered his interpretation of the cyclical progress of humanity. The two paintings depict two forms of suffering, which this paper will refer to as a “good” and a “bad” death. This nomenclature is not strictly accurate as neither form could be said to be desirable in any concrete way. Consequently a Rivera painting (“Revolution – Germination”) will also be presented that suggests an ideal death. However, the focus will remain on Orozco's paintings. Of course, in his own paintings Orozco is not endorsing the act of human sacrifice. However, because of differences in their composition, they suggest not only a cyclic pattern to human history, but also a downward progression where the persistent problems of violence and suffering in human societies have grown more difficult and complicated since the advent of modernity. As Orozco's paintings seem to suggest and Heidegger will argue, the solution to the isolating ‘bad death’ is learning to live relationally. These relationships comprehend the social and the cultural, but the focus will be on the ecological and the divine, because, as several critics will argue, these are the greatest deficiencies in modernity.

Abstract:

Tucked within Pomona College’s campus in Claremont, California, sits Frary Hall, the home of Mexican muralist Jose Clemente Orozco’s first work in the United States. The mural, titled Prometheus (1930), has been subjected to many instances of vandalism over the years. Thus, in 1980, a protective coating was applied. Today, the coating, a highly-reflective varnish, has been noted as a hindrance of the fresco’s original matte surface. Using case studies and art historical analysis, this thesis examines the importance of the mural within the history of Mexican muralism and the pros and cons of removing the protective coating. In addition, this research looks at the potential of art conservation as a means of reactivating the mural and promoting discussions across campus about the preservation of this cultural landmark. The thesis is culminated by a detailed proposal for the continued conservation of the mural, using Prometheus as a starting point for further discussions about aesthetics and ethics within the discourses of art history, art conservation and art restoration.

Abstract:

O presente trabalho trata de alguns temas do debate jurídico da primeira metade do século XIX. Estes temas são analisados a partir da participação do magistrado e político José Clemente Pereira. É o momento do esforço de criação de uma legislação nacional, necessária em decorrência do rompimento dos laços com Portugal. Nascido em Portugal em 1787, formado em Coimbra, Clemente Pereira imigrou para o Brasil em 1815. Rapidamente ascendeu nos negócios e na carreira política, participando das articulações que levaram à independência e se tornando muito influente na capital fluminense em razão de negócios no mercado de gêneros de abastecimento e de sua atuação como advogado dos grandes comerciantes da Corte. Foi juiz de fora, deputado geral, ministro do império, da guerra e da marinha, senador, conselheiro de estado e presidente do primeiro Tribunal do Comércio do Brasil. A partir dessas posições participou e influenciou vários debates sobre temas políticos e jurídicos, entre os quais escolhemos três: a criação da lei de responsabilidade dos ministros de Estado, de 1827; os debates sobre o Código Criminal do Império, criado em 1830, e do Código Comercial, de 1850. Os debates mostram os desafios que estavam colocados para a formação do Estado e da nação brasileiros, num contexto de transformação do direito representado pelo moderno ideário de codificação, e mudanças na política, com a crescente centralização do poder monárquico, mas também com sua limitação a partir do advento do constitucionalismo.
This paper aims at discussing some aspects of the legal debate that took place during the first half of the XIXth Century. Said aspects are assessed from the moment Justice and Politician José Clemente Pereira appears in the public scenario. It is the moment when strengths are gathered to create a national legislation, then mandatory due to the rupture of bonds with Portugal. Born in Portugal in 1787, graduate at the University of Coimbra, Clemente Pereira immigrated to Brazil in 1815. He rapidly gained importance as a businessman and as a politician, taking part in the discussions that lead to the Independence and becoming quite influential in the Court due to his business and his work as an attorney for major traders. He was a judge, congressman, a ministry of the Empire, of War and Navy, a Senator, a State Counselor, and the Chairman of the first Board of Trade of Brazil. After occupying the afore mentioned positions, he acted as an influential player in several debates about legal and political matters, among which we chose three: the creation of the act of liability for ministries of State of 1827; the debates on the Criminal Code of the Empire, created in 1830, and of the Commercial Code of 1850. The debates show the challenges that were set for the establishment of the Brazilian State and Nation, in a context of transformation of the Law represented by the modern set of codification ideas and changes in politics, with the growing centralization of monarchical power, but also with its limitation, starting with the onset of constitutionalism.

Esta dissertação trata do processo de mistificação do empreendedorismo como expressão de regionalidade da Região Colonial Italiana (RCI), que tem como agentes discursivos historiadores, poder público, entidades de classe e empresários. A partir da análise da historiografia econômica regional e da biografia do seu maior símbolo empresarial, Abramo Eberle, objetiva-se identificar as relações entre essa narrativa histórica e a ficcional na trajetória empreendedora da família Gardone, presente na trilogia da imigração A Cocanha, O Quatrilho e A Babilônia, de José Clemente Pozenato. Dessa forma, este estudo procura discutir o empreendedorismo como manifestação de regionalidade, a qual passa pelo discurso mítico fundamentado nos conceitos de Mircea Eliade, e identificar como a lógica dos personagens e sua teia de valores morais representam os princípios tradicionais do modelo empreededor.

The following thesis is about the mystification process of entrepreneurship as a regionality expression of the Italian Colonial Region (ICR), which has as discursive sources: historians, public authorities, class entities and entrepreneurs. Based on the analysis of the regional economic historiography and on its major business symbol, Abramo Eberle, the purpose is to identify the connections between this historical narrative and the fictional one in the Gardone family’s entrepreneurial trail, present in the immigration trilogy: A Cocanha, O Quatrilho and A Babilônia, by José Clemente Pozenato. Therefore, this project aims to discuss the entrepreneurship as a regionality manifestation, which examines the mythical speech based on Mircea Eliade’s concepts and to identify how the characters’ logic and its range of moral values represent the traditional principals of the entrepreneurial model.

Aun siendo un modo de expresión personal, la creación espera ser asimilada, comprendida, criticada, juzgada o adulada en un contexto socio-histórico determinado. En este sentido, el arte posee una función social; las corrientes y escuelas del arte se caracterizan por compartir cualidades no sólo plásticas sino también por abordar temáticas similares, lo que hace de ellas un modo particular de acercarse a los distintos fenómenos de la realidad y producir una concepción de los mismos mediante las imágenes.

Abstract:

A presente dissertação versa sobre as relações entre gastronomia, identidade e regionalidade na região de imigração italiana da Serra Gaúcha. Dentro de um contexto culinário globalizado onde o estatuto do “local” ganha cada vez mais força, parece ser de suma importância compreender quais as relações de cultura e identidade que contribuem para o estabelecimento de classificações que são, muitas vezes, tomadas como realidades espontâneas. Isso posto, a proposta deste trabalho gravitará pela análise das relações entre gastronomia e as diferentes regionalidades que serão, em um recorte temporal futuro ao proposto nesta análise, utilizadas como base para a criação do conceito de alimentação regional da imigração baseado no típico. Para tanto, serão investigadas as bases formativas dos conceitos de gastronomia e identidade do Brasil e da Itália, verificando suas relações com as regionalidades presentes na representação do imigrante italiano da Serra Gaúcha, compreendendo as suas relações com a caracterização da alimentação analisada através do ponto de vista histórico e ficcional.

This paper intends to study the relations between cuisine, identity and regionality into Serra Gaúcha’s italian immigration region. In a globalized context wich “local cuisines” are still of increasing relevance, it has become crucial to understand the connexions between culture and identity which contribute to establish categories that are, many tames, taken for granted as spontaneous realities. This said, this paper will analize the relationship between cuisine and the various regionalities that would be, in time frame ahead of the adopted in this study, part of the construction of the italian typical cuisine that will characterize this region’s food habits. To accomplish this, Italian and Brazilian food identity will be analysed to stablish and understand their links with Serra Gaúcha’s italian immigrant characteristic regionalities.

Este é um estudo sobre o movimento muralista mexicano em diálogo com a perspectiva decolonial. São analisados os trabalhos de Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco e David Alfaro Siqueiros, respectivamente, a partir dos murais Historia de Morelos, Conquista y Revolución (1930); La Conquista Española de México (1939) e Cuauhtémoc Contra el Mito (1944). A partir de uma abordagem comparativa entre os três pintores proponho uma discussão sobre a possibilidade de o discurso estético do muralismo mexicano guardar pontos de interseção com os pressupostos da perspectiva decolonial.
This is a study of the Mexican muralist movement in dialogue with decolonial perspective. The works of Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, respectively, from the murals Historia de Morelos, Conquista y Revolución (1930); La Conquista Española de México (1939) e Cuauhtémoc Contra el Mito (1944). From a comparative approach between the three painters, this work proposes a discussion about the possibility of discourse esthetic of Mexican muralism to establish points of intersection with the assumptions from a decolonial perspective.

Abstract:

Este trabalho parte de uma de uma investigação que perpassa a literatura, arquitetura e história, no qual se procura identificar os significados e as transformações do espaço de habitar do imigrante, no contexto da cultura da Região Colonial Italiana, no nordeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. O enfoque histórico é concebido desde o cenário europeu, no período da imigração italiana, e dos avanços tecnológicos do século XIX, até meados da década de 1940. O estabelecimento dos imigrantes italianos, no sul Brasil, se efetivou no período do Governo Imperial, na Província de São Pedro, e as terras a eles destinadas localizavam-se na região serrana gaúcha. O imigrante italiano manipulou a natureza de acordo com a sua cultura, ergueu suas moradas conforme o seu conhecimento atávico e os materiais disponíveis na região. Pela Análise de Conteúdo se busca refletir sobre as transformações da casa do imigrante italiano através do domínio lingüístico, tendo como corpus de pesquisa a trilogia de José Clemente Pozenato, A Cocanha , O Quatrilho e A babilônia , sendo analisados os aspectos objetivos e subjetivos do espaço de habitar. O domínio icônico apresenta imagens, fotografias e desenhos de casas construídas pelos imigrantes italianos, em que é retratada a transformação física do espaço de habitar. A literatura ultrapassa os aspectos objetivos, revela o espaço vivido, traz à luz os aspectos subjetivos, atribuindo diversos significados à casa do imigrante italiano.

This study arises from an investigation which addresses literature architecture and history. It also tries to find the meanings and the transformations of the immigrants environment in the context of culture of the colonial Italian region in the northeast of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The historical focus conceived from European scenery during Italian migration and from the technological advances of the 19th century until the 1940s. The Italian immigrant settlement in the south of Brazil happened during the Imperial Government in Província de São Pedro and the land given to them were located in the highlands. The Italian immigrants manipulated nature according to their culture. They built their houses using their atavic knowledge and all materials available in the region. Analysing the context, we try to reflect on the transformations in the Italian immigrant houses though the linguistic dominance having as a body of research the trilogy of José Clemente Pozenato, A Cocanha , O Quatrilho e A babilônia , where the objective and subjective aspects of the environmental space are analysed. The iconic dominance presents images, photographs and drawings of houses built by the Italian immigrants where the physical transformation of the environmental space is represented. The literature goes beyond the objective aspects revealing the living space and gives light to the subjective aspects, giving various meanings to the Italian immigrant house.

O corte epistemológico pode ser representado por duas trajetórias: a) da Itália para a América – Brasil; b) das pequenas comunidades do interior para a cidade grande. No mundo de descendência italiana imigrante, as simulações e as ilusões elaboradas pela Ficção estão mais próximas da Realidade que aquelas proporcionadas por institutos e associações, em seus argumentos e artimanhas para “resgatar as raízes” e “cultivar as tradições”, representadas por eventos como noites italianas, jantares típicos, encontros de famílias e programas radiofônicos. Nos romances, a ausência desses “eventos” é absoluta; não há brindes, nem missas de encomendação e sepultamento. Ao fim e ao cabo, o homem do campo, pós-moderno, descendente dos antigos imigrantes italianos, tornou-se um ser globalizado sem sair de casa.
This study in the manner of an essay reflects a constant but unstable interchange between Fiction, History and Personal Experience. It is based on the following novels: Os Malavoglia (Giovanni Verga), Pai patrão (Gavino Ledda), Vita e Stória de Nanetto Pipetta (Aquiles Bernardi), O quatrilho, A cocanha and A babilônia (José Clemente Pozenato), Juliano Pavolini and A suavidade do vento (Cristovão Tezza), Mamma, son tanto felice, O mundo inimigo and Vista parcial da noite (Luiz Ruffato). Two epistemological paths have a point of departure and a point of arrival: a) from Italy to Brazil / America; b) from small backcountry communities to the big city. Among the descendants of italian immigrants the simulations and illusions processed by fiction are closer to reality than those offered by institutions and associations in their argueing and tricking for "retrieval of the roots" and "reclaiming traditions", embodied by events like italian evenings, typical dinners, family encounters, and radio programs. In the novels, there is an absolute absence of such "events", no glasses are raised in honor of anything, no requiem and inhumation masses are held. Post-modern countryside people of Italian descent in Brazil have become globalized without even leaving home.
