Abstract:
Abstract Objective: AI has demonstrated great promise in learning sophisticated features and relations in data that would otherwise remain hidden to the human eye. Here, we developed a proprietary AI-based multimodal approach to integrate clinical, digitized hematoxylin-eosin (H&E), and radiology bone scan (rBS) data for outcome prediction in ADT-treated nmCRPC patients. Identifying prostate cancer patients who may not benefit from ADT could improve the medical management of this disease beyond current definitive therapy. Methods: Patients in the ADT+placebo arm from SPARTAN clinical trial on nmCRPC with available clinical, H&E, and rBS were used (n=154). These patients were randomly divided into 70% (n=107) discovery and 30% (n=47) hold-out test datasets. Using the discovery set, we developed and trained a multimodal approach that combines survival convolutional neural networks (SCNNs1) and Cox proportional-hazards model (CPH) to learn ADT outcomes for overall survival (OS) and time to PSA progression (TTP) from the integration of imaging data and 11 traditional clinical features (e.g., tumor stage, Gleason score, PSA). The ability of the trained framework in predicting outcomes and risk stratification was evaluated on the hold-out set. Bootstrap analysis with Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to determine the significance of the multimodal framework’s performance improvement compared to clinical CPH. Results: The multimodal framework was predictive of ADT outcomes for OS and TTP in nmCRPC patients. In SPARTAN’s hold-out set, the multimodal framework significantly improved the predictive power of clinical CPH by 14%—16% across both outcomes (Wilcoxon signed rank P<0.0001). In particular, the multimodal framework’s concordance index (c-index) was 0.72 for OS and 0.73 for TTP, while clinical CPH’s c-index was 0.62 for OS, and 0.64 for TTP. Further, multimodal framework significantly stratified high- from low-risk nmCRPC patients for OS and TTP (log-rank P= 0.0049-0.0072), while clinical CPH failed to stratify risk for OS (log-rank P= 0.2891). Conclusion: AI-based framework that learns from the integration of different data types improves outcome prediction in ADT-treated nmCRPC. The multimodal approach demonstrates promise in treatment decision support for the early use of androgen receptor-directed therapy and patient selection for clinical trials with novel treatment combinations. Abstract:
(IFPM Center for Corporate Governance, University of St Gallen), ISEG School of Economics and Management (Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration),

Abstract:
ABSTRACTIn the summer of 1880, the British explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith made the first reconnaissance of the western reaches of Zemlya Frantsa-Iosifa [Franz Josef Land] in the specially built polar research vessel Eira. This was the first expedition to go ashore in the archipelago after its acknowledged discovery by Weyprecht and Payer in 1873. Combined with his brief reconnaissance in 1881 before Eira sank near Cape Flora, Leigh Smith added a total of 41 place names, 37 of which are still in use, to its geographic nomenclature during his two expeditions, 1880 (39 place names) and 1881–1882 (2). The 1880 names were a post-expedition collaboration, between Leigh Smith and Clements Markham, Secretary of the Royal Geographic Society (RGS). Leigh Smith provided the names of colleagues and scientists who had either been with him in 1880 or on one of his earlier expeditions to Svalbard, or those of favoured relatives, while Markham, along with Sir George Nares as an RGS peer reviewer, added the names of particularly influential individuals in geographical circles as well as a variety of museum curators who identified natural history collections returned by the expedition. Additionally, two place names are connected to the Dutch Willem Barents expedition of 1879.

Abstract:
Philosophy occupied an important place in Ivo Andric?s higher education. In Vienna 1913, Andric took undergraduate courses in philosophy that were taught by Wilhelm Jerusalem, Oscar Ewald and Josef Clemens Kreibig, while on his PhD studies he passed the exam in philosophy with Hugo Spitzer, one of the rare neo-Kantians in Austria-Hungary at that time. Austrian philosophy (this phrase covers Austro-Hungarian philosophers who worked outside the boundaries of our-day Austria) is an interesting phenomenon because, among other things, Austria is relatively young philosophical nation that gave, within less than one century (from 1840s to 1930s), many famous philosophers of whom some were also famous scientists. There are some attempts of finding out what all Austrian philosophers have in common, and, according to the so-called the Neurath-Haller thesis, the hallmark of Austrian philosophy is accepting the scientific world-view, using language analysis in addressing philosophical issues, appraising psychology and endorsing empiricism that presupposes rejecting speculative metaphysics. It is worth stressing that although they wrote in the same language, many prominent Austrian philosophers explicitly wanted to distance themselves from classical German idealism (and very often from Kantian transcendental idealism) both with regards to form (the style of writing) and content (the ideas they defended). The author examines to what extent the philosophical education gained in Vienna and Graz influenced Andric?s work and argues that his thought contains elements characteristic for the main features of Austrian philosophy mentioned above.

Abstract:
Dr. Lourdes A. Manahan Batch 1943 of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine laid the groundwork for the subspecialty of Rheumatology in the Philippines in the 1960s. She established the Section of Rheumatology in 1971, now known as the Division of Rheumatology of the Department of Medicine of the University of the Philippines Manila - Philippine General Hospital. During those early years, as the only rheumatologist in the country, she multitasked as clinician, teacher, researcher and mentor. She represented the country in various international forums, putting the Philippines and the University of the Philippines in the international Rheumatology community. In 1981, a formal two-year fellowship program in rheumatology at PGH was established, the first of its kind in the Philippines. From there, the Section of Rheumatology grew by one trainee every 3-5years, By the late 1980, the section had graduated five rheumatologists, all of whom stayed in the country to render service. On its 50th year, the Division which was started by two rheumatologists has produced more than 80 astute specialists to serve patients with rheumatic diseases throughout the country. Its continuing patient advocacy has led to various programs and publications targeted to improve the lives of patients. Its contribution in the field of research has been recognized in local and international venues. It is recognized as, and will continue to be, a significant contributor to the growth of Rheumatology in the Philippines in decades to come. We hope to honor the legacy of Dr. Lourdes Manahan through this special issue. The Division is eternally grateful for the passion for teaching, service, and research of Professor Clemente Amante and Professor Ester Gonzales-Penserga who continue Dr. Manahan’s work. To my colleagues in the Division, Professor Bernadette Heizel Manapat-Reyes, Professor Michael Tee, Associate Professor Jose Paulo Lorenzo, Associate Professor Eric Jason Amante, Associate Professor Angeline-Therese Santiago, and Associate Professor Geraldine Zamora, the challenge to keep the fire burning lies with us. To all who train and trained in the Division and contribute to the research we share, congratulations! Abstract:
Recent studies have shown that philosophy and theology, two disciplines separated and distinguished from each other for more than five hundred years, are closer in reality than how philosophers and theologians of today understand them. This is even more evident in those who reflect on the socalled “death of metaphysics” and the “end of philosophy” that Martin Heidegger proclaims. This, however, cannot escape the question of dealing with St. Thomas Aquinas’ philosophical and theological enterprise, whose intellectual spirit is characterized by delving both into philosophical and theological questions. This work tries to place St. Thomas Aquinas within this framework, ultimately showing that he exemplifies a lively interaction and interpenetration between these two disciplines. To show this, the paper goes through a brief survey of the historical distinction which finds its roots in St. Thomas himself. Afterwards, it provides a new understanding of the relationship between philosophy and theology primarily found in Jean-Luc Marion. Through this, one sees that in fact, St. Thomas does philosophy and theology ruly, that while speaking of a distinction between these two disciplines, his whole intellectual project can be seen as both hilosophical and theological, in which one cannot be spoken of without the other. Abstract:
Epistemological frames and theoretical underpinnings are developed precisely to give coherence and cognitive rendering to a rather chaotic appearance of the world and reality to man’s consciousness. These frames offer associations of nuances and concepts that in turn provide cogent systems of understanding, which contribute to man’s unending search for meanings combining as it were his experience of the world and his ability to mentally grasp such experience hence, the Ancient Greek word episteme. In the social sciences, theoretical frameworks are formulated to provide grounding venues for construing the complexities and specificities of social phenomena toward a better understanding of the social world. Concomitantly, these frameworks are assessed and evaluated based on their capacity to utter notions and tell stories of the slice of reality they wish to depict. It is in this respect that this paper offers a critical examination of the most prevalent theoretical frames and epistemic perspectives, herein referred to as classics, deployed in understanding Philippine political local dynamics. In light of Philippine contemporary economic, social, cultural, and political developments, the article identifies some gaps and bumps in these ‘classics’ to offer a research trajectory that scholars in the field can rightly consider. Through a synthesis of existing political paradigms applied in local politics, the paper highlighted nuances that are ignored, realities that are not yet explored, and concepts rendered with over-simplistic meanings, suggesting imperatives for modifications, deconstructions, and even reconstructions.
