Introduction Films with deaf characters often do not focus on the condition of deafness at all. Rather, the characters seem to satisfy a role in the story that either furthers the plot or the audience’s understanding of other hearing characters. The deaf characters can be symbolic, for example as a metaphor for isolation representative of ‘those without a voice’ in a society. The deaf characters’ misunderstanding of auditory cues can lead to comic circumstances, and their knowledge can save them in the case of perilous ones.

The central nexus of Chapter 1 the Lecumberri Palace, commonly known as the Black Palace—the state prison inaugurated in 1901, turned into the General National Archive in 1976, and the site of the public announcement of President Vicente Fox’s transparency reforms in 2002. Lecumberri is also the locus of the two early testimonial narratives on the 68 student movement and Tlatelolco massacre, by Luis González de Alba and José Revueltas. Their analysis shows how this theoretically closed, impermeable institution constitutes a node within the network of the modern spaces of discipline and, at the same time, the microcosm of Mexico City. On the other hand, the transmutations of Lecumberri serve to reflect on different modes of knowledge production, history writing and commemoration. Both the prison and the archive are shown to be more than just physical spaces—they are results of the ongoing embodied interpretative processes.

Franco ese hombre (Franco, that Man, José Luis Sáenz de Heredia, 1964) is a documentary about Franco by the director of Raza made to commemorate Franco´s “Twenty Five Years of Peace” political campaign. Made twenty-two years later than Raza, Franco ese hombre aims through its kitsch aesthetics to portray the elderly, historical Franco as the messianic hero needed to save Spain. In doing so, it completely rewrites Spanish history according to Francoist historical, ideological and political clichés. By means of a curious narrative splitting, Franco becomes both the protagonist of Spanish history and the ideal spectator of it, as the documentary comes to an end by showing us Franco inside a film theater at his official residence watching the documentary of his own exploits. From being a purveyor of kitsch, Franco reveals himself to be a kitsch-man who, believing his own lies was the ideal consumer of kitsch aesthetics.
