Abstract:
Josef Frank's Villa Beer, designed and built between 1928 and 1930, constitutes one of the most complete and sophisticated investigations of the possibilities of the new spatial planning ideas that emerged just prior to and after World War I. Like his Viennese contemporary Adolf Loos, Frank developed his own individual spatial planning strategy, which was based on differentiated room levels and heights, open circulation spaces and galleries, and open stairwells, terraces, and landings. This article examines the genesis and development of Frank's concept of "The House as Path and Place" and its expression in the Villa Beer, comparing Frank's approach with Loos's notion of the Raumplan and Le Corbusier's plan libre. By carefully establishing the linkages between the interlocking volumes in the house, Frank was able to produce a dynamic version of the Raumplan, one that fostered a powerful and affective experience of space.

Kruml, Christina.

Full text
Abstract:
2009/2010

Abstract:
In my thesis I write about what I as a cabinet maker can contribute with in a design process and construction process of a piece of furniture. From past experience there is often a lack of expertise among the architects and designers in areas like construction and material knowledge at design studios. I have in cooperation with Svenskt Tenn and their range manager chosen a sketch by Josef Frank from the archives, a sketch that never left the drawing table. Josef Frank, trained as an architect, was not a cabinet maker and therefore he didn’t have the same knowledge about construction as, for example, the famous cabinet maker Carl Malmsten. This you can clearly see in Franks sketches. The sketches that he drew leave you with a lot of questions that you need to find the answers to before the manufacturing can begin and this is my thesis is about. It’s up to me as the cabinet maker together with the knowledge of Svenskt Tenns range managers about Josef Frank and his design to create a piece of furniture that is as close as possible to Frank’s sketch and ideas. The result of my work is a prototype of a table that has been developed after analysis of a simple sketch. I have identified and solved a number of problems such as; materials, the appearances and construction of the table. I have from my studies realized the importance of the cabinet maker’s knowledge in a design process. With this knowledge I can help and guide the designer/outsourcer/producer forward to a more sustainable and better developed product.

Waiho – (verb) (-ngia,-tia) to let be, leave alone, put, place, ignore.

SH6 Waiho Bailey Bridge is located just south of Franz Josef township in the South Island of New Zealand and is a critical connection for the West Coast. The Bailey bridge was first constructed in 1990 and has since been raised and extended three times due to significant aggradation of the riverbed. During a massive storm event on March 26, 2019 the northern abutment and northern- most pier were washed out leading to collapse of several spans of the bridge. The cost caused by the loss of the bridge was estimated to be in the order of $2-3M per day. Consequently, there was intense pressure on Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to restore access across the river.

As Team Leader and Deputy Team Leader of the West Coast Bridge Management Contract, Jeremy Waldin and Ben Baty led the $6.5M emergency recovery managing an emergency response team which worked across multiple organisations to recover this 170m long bridge in just 18 days.

Abstract:
The airport infrastructure is constantly influenced by the development of aircraft. It has always been, that the aircraft was first designed, and based on its performance parameters and geometrical characteristics, a space for the airport were sought to serve the new aircraft. Even today, we can see the different development of aircraft in different aircraft manufacturers, which determine how the airport infrastructure will change in the future. In the introductory chapters, we analyze several aircraft requirements for airports that have been affected by changes in ground infrastructure and the subsequent development of airports. The main objective of this bachelor thesis is to document the changes in the airport infrastructure caused by the historical development of aircraft. The discussed development of aircraft and reaches out from the beginning of aviation to the end of World War II through the era of jet aircraft to large-scale long-haul aircraft. Based on the creation of a database of aircraft and a description of typical aircraft representatives of the period, an analysis of their parameters and the described impact on selected airports is performed. Three historical international airports were selected for a detailed analysis of airport development. There are two analyzed airports in Europe: Munich Riem together with Munich - Franz Josef Strauß and Amsterdam Schiphol. In the United States, John F Kennedy Airport is chosen near New York City in terms of the highest airline utilization. Until 1951, selected airports were analyzed from historical footage and, after the publication of ICAO Annex 14 Aerodromes, also documented by changes in the regulation. Airports had to adapt to changes in environmental requirements and the introduction of new technologies in the form of more fuel-efficient and smaller commercial aircraft. One of the benefits of the thesis is to emphasize the need to plan airport changes in relation to the needs of aircraft technology in the future. This area includes the planning and modernization of runways (RWY), terminals, aprons and stands. At present, RWY design pays attention to reducing noise in suburban areas, reducing turn-round time at stands by using jetways, the number of taxiways (TWY) connecting the RWY to the airport and operating aircraft with a smaller code letter.
