Abstract:
Josef Frank's Villa Beer, designed and built between 1928 and 1930, constitutes one of the most complete and sophisticated investigations of the possibilities of the new spatial planning ideas that emerged just prior to and after World War I. Like his Viennese contemporary Adolf Loos, Frank developed his own individual spatial planning strategy, which was based on differentiated room levels and heights, open circulation spaces and galleries, and open stairwells, terraces, and landings. This article examines the genesis and development of Frank's concept of "The House as Path and Place" and its expression in the Villa Beer, comparing Frank's approach with Loos's notion of the Raumplan and Le Corbusier's plan libre. By carefully establishing the linkages between the interlocking volumes in the house, Frank was able to produce a dynamic version of the Raumplan, one that fostered a powerful and affective experience of space.

Abstract:
Part memoir, part theatre history, in this illustrated essay Joe Vaněk invites us to an inside-view on the design process. Choosing key performances of European plays (Brecht, Ibsen) adapted by Irish writers, Vaněk takes us through the thought processes and work practices that bring a play from page to stage, with descriptions and photographs to illustrate his design choices and thinking. Additionally, he offers us insights into working with Irish playwrights who examine Ireland’s relationship to Europe, for example in his designs for Frank McGuinness’s Innocence: The life of Caravaggio, and the work of Brian Friel and Hugo Hamilton. Vaněk traces his own influences, from the theatre work of the Czech designer Josef Svoboda to painters, architecture, and landscape. His reflections reveal the complexity of the role of the designer and the intricate workings of theatre practice Keywords: Theatre design, costume design, Irish playwrights, Brian Friel, Frank McGuinness, Hugo Hamilton, Gate Theatre

Abstract:
Abstract This article analyses the interior designs of the Austrian Werkbund in the context of political designs for social democracy, focussing particularly on the 1932 Werkbundsiedlung as a site of aesthetic and cultural inclusion. By embracing the vernacular idioms of Central and Eastern European folk art, the Historicist style associated with nineteenth-century Austrian imperialism and the innovations of modern technology, the Werkbund represented an attempt to come to terms with the cultural legacy of the empire and to define the future of the Austrian state. In doing so, a comfortable, decidedly sentimental approach to design came to function as a site of encounter between history and ethnicity, offering a visual continuity between pre-1918 imperial Vienna and inter-war Red Vienna. Werkbund designers such as Josef Frank, Paul Fischel, Heinrich Kulka, Adolf Loos, Heinz Siller and Oskar Wlach were thus well positioned to contribute to the programme of eclectic decoration that was sponsored by the social democratic welfare initiatives of 1920s and 1930s Vienna.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a distinct visual process that triggers the perception of illusory surfaces and contours along the intersections of aligned, zigzag line patterns. Such illusory contours and surfaces are qualitatively different from illusory contours of the Kanizsa type. The illusory contours and surfaces in this case are not the product of occlusion and do not imply occlusion of one surface by another. Rather, the aligned angles in the patterns are combined by the visual system into the perception of a fold or a 3-D corner, as of stairs on a staircase or a wall ending on a floor. The depth impression is ambiguous and reversible like the Necker cube. Such patterns were used by American Indian artists of the Akimel O'odham (Pima) tribe in basketry, and also by modern European and American artists like Josef Albers, Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, and Frank Stella. Our research aims to find out what manipulations of the visual image affect perceived depth in such patterns in order to learn about the perceptual mechanisms. Using paired comparisons, we find that human observers perceive depth in such patterns if, and only if, lines in adjacent regions of the patterns join to form angles, and also if, and only if, the angles are aligned precisely to be consistent with a fold or 3-D corner. The amount of perceived depth is graded, depending on the steepness and the density of angles in the aligned-angle pattern. The required precision of the alignment implies that early retinotopic visual cortical areas may be involved in this perceptual behavior, but the linkage of form with perceived depth suggests involvement of higher cortical areas as well.

The world’s most northern species of the nudibranch genus Adalaria rossica sp. nov. from Franz Josef Land and a new species of Onchidoris expectata sp. nov. from the north-west Pacific Matua Island (Kurile Islands) are described. Prior to this study the nudibranch fauna from Franz Josef Land was represented only by two common North Atlantic species. Molecular taxonomic data were not applied for the Franz Josef Land nudibranchs previously. Nudibranchs of Matua Island have never been investigated. Furthermore, a new North Pacific taxon, Adalaria ultima sp. nov., is described here. The taxonomy of the onchidoridid genera Adalaria and Onchidoris is discussed.

Abstract:
Contemporary Jewish-Muslim relations are so mired in the Middle East’spolitical conflict that most people are often quite surprised to learn of theremarkable theological, legal, and mystical intersections between both traditions.Modern political hostilities centered on the Palestinian-Israelidivide have almost entirely clouded the shared Semitic heritage of faithsthat were, until just a little more than 50 years ago, invariably stamped bythe Christian West with the seal of “otherness” – an “internal otherness” inthe case of Judaism, and an “external otherness” in the case of Islam. In this light, Josef Meri’s work is a welcome contribution to the scholarlystudy of Jewish-Muslim relations. The study raises our awareness of both religions’ common cultural and intellectual history: more specifically,to the medieval Muslim and Jewish pilgrimage culture of saint venerationin Syria, and, to a lesser extent, other regions of the Near East. The workgrew out of the author’s doctoral dissertation at Oxford, done under thesupervision of Wilferd Madelung and Daniel Frank, and bears the mark ofthe many hours Meri must have spent as a scholarly archeologist diggingthrough an enormous range of classical Arabic and Hebrew texts as well aspertinent secondary literature.Although the concentration of the comparative analysis tilts toward theIslamic side (the author notes that the evidence for Jewish saint venerationis considerably less), he still manages to explore the parallel concepts, religiouspractices, and architectural facets relevant to his analysis with reasonablesuccess. The work is not simply a descriptive account of Jewishand Muslim saint veneration, but an assessment of the psychological andcultural modes that accompany such forms of religious expression. To thisend, Meri draws out some of the wider theoretical issues pertaining to theconstruction of sacred space and the social function of saints and pilgrimagesites ...

A brief introduction to the geographic place names of Franz Josef Land. Franz Josef Land is located in the western Arctic though for much of the 20th Century it was closed behind the Iron Curtain. Prior to that, there were a series of Western expeditions between the ‘official’ discovery in 1873 and the departure of the American Fiala group in 1905. From these expeditions, the islands are heavily connected to the history of the search for the North Pole.

Abstract:
Cryophilic algae thrive in liquid water within snow and ice in alpine and polar regions worldwide. Blooms of these algae lower albedo (reflection of sunlight), thereby altering melting patterns (Kohshima, Seko & Yoshimura, 1993; Lutz et al., 2014; Thomas & Duval, 1995). Here metagenomic DNA analysis and satellite imaging were used to investigate red snow in Franz Josef Land in the Russian Arctic. Franz Josef Land red snow metagenomes confirmed that the communities are composed of the autotrophChlamydomonas nivalisthat is supporting a complex viral and heterotrophic bacterial community. Comparisons with white snow communities from other sites suggest that white snow and ice are initially colonized by fungal-dominated communities and then succeeded by the more complexC. nivalis-heterotroph red snow. Satellite image analysis showed that red snow covers up to 80% of the surface of snow and ice fields in Franz Josef Land and globally. Together these results show thatC. nivalissupports a local food web that is on the rise as temperatures warm, with potential widespread impacts on alpine and polar environments worldwide.

AbstractFollowing his return from participating in Benjamin Leigh Smith's expedition that wintered at Cape Flora, Northbrook Island, Franz Josef Land, in 1881–82, William Robertson, the chief engineer on the barque Eira, wrote a brief account of the expedition. Robertson's manuscript emphasises the hunting of walrus prior to reaching Franz Josef Land, the sinking of the ship, the enforced wintering, and the successful retreat of the party by open boat to Novaya Zemlya. The original of the manuscript reproduced here, which is one of only a few first-person accounts known to exist, is held by Robertson's descendants. It has not previously been published.

Abstract:
AbstractDespite their relatively small total ice volume, mid-latitude valley glaciers are expected to make a significant contribution to global sea-level rise over the next century due to the sensitivity of their mass-balance systems to small changes in climate. Here we use a degree-day model to reconstruct the past century of mass-balance variation at ‘Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere’ Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand, and to predict how mass balance may change over the next century. Analysis of the relationship between temperature, precipitation and mass balance indicates that temperature is a stronger control than precipitation on the mass balance of Franz Josef Glacier. The glacier’s mass balance, relative to its 1986 geometry, has decreased at a mean annual rate of 0.02m a–1w.e. between 1894 and 2005. We compare this reduction to observations of terminus advance and retreat, of which Franz Josef Glacier has the best record in the Southern Hemisphere. For the years 2000–05 the relative mass balance ranged from –0.75 to +1.50m a–1w.e., with 2000/01 the only year showing a negative mass balance. In a regionally downscaled Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change mean warming scenario, the annual relative mass balance will continue to decrease at 0.02m a–1w.e. through the next century.

Abstract:
A brief survey of bryophyte studies on the Franz Josef Land Archipelago and its southernmost Northbrook Island is provided. Identification of bryophytes collected by S. S. Kholod in 2012 at Cape Flora of Northbrook Island resulted in finds of 45 moss species and 9 liverwort species, including 27 moss species and 7 liverwort species new for Northbrook Island (marked by asterisk — *), 7 moss species and 2 liverwort species new for Franz Josef Land (marked by double asterisk — **). The morphology of a critical collection of Orthocaulis cf. floerkei is discussed. Ten moss and two liverwort species recorded earlier for Northbrook Island by Savicz (1936) and Zhukova (1973b) have not been found in the studied collections. Data on doubtful and excluded taxa are provided and annotated in Russian and English. In total 55 moss and 11 liverwort species are known at present from Northbrook Island.

Abstract:
AbstractLandsat digital imagery was used to search the island archipelagos of Franz Josef Land, Severnaya Zemlya and Novaya Zemlya, Russian High Arctic, for the presence of looped moraines characteristic of past glacier surges. The imagery provides almost complete summer-time coverage of the 60 000 km2 of ice in these islands. very few surge-type glaciers are identified: none in Franz Josef Land, three in Novaya Zemlya and two on Severnaya Zemlya. This contrasts greatly with Svalbard (ice-covered area 36 600 km2), to the west, where 36% of glaciers and ice-cap drainage basins are inferred to surge. The strong climatic gradient across the Eurasian High Arctic, with decreasing temperature and moisture eastward, may provide a gross control on this pattern through colder glacier thermal structure, limiting basal drainage on the thinner ice masses in particular.

Abstract:
Forty-four new lichen species and one lichenicolous fungus have been identified as a result of studies of the lichen biota of the Franz Josef Land archipelago. Bryocaulon hyperboreum was reported for the first time from Russia. Gyalecta hypoleuca and Umbilicaria maculata were first identified in the Arctic. Arctocetraria andrejevii, Brodoa oroarctica, Candelariella borealis, Cercidospora stereocaulorum, Massalongia carnosa, Miriquidica nigroleprosa, M. plumbeoatra, Myriolecis zosterae var. palanderi and Polyblastia gothica are new to the Arkhangelsk Region; and Arthrorhaphis citrinella, Mycoblastus alpinus, Racodium rupestre, Rhizocarpon ferax, Scytinium intermedium, Stereocaulon glareosum are new to the Arctic part of the Arkhangelsk Region. Species new to Arkhangelsk Region, Arctic and Russia are supplied with information on distribution in neighboring regions and world and on differences from closely related species. The checklist of the Franz Josef Land archipelago thus includes 277 species and 6 varieties of lichenized and 43 lichenicolous fungi to date.

Abstract:
In 2013–2019, observations on Arctic archipelagoes Novaya Zemlya and Franz-Josef Land were made. A series of multiannual monitoring of seabird colonies on the Murman coast (Kola Peninsula) were continued. The results show that large-scale negative effects on seabird populations mostly occur in areas of Atlantic water masses in the southwestern Barents Sea. On the coasts and islands ofMurman, considerable fluctuations of the number of kittiwakes and guillemots imposed on the general decreasing trend were noted. Within the Arctic water masses at Franz-Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya, the conditions of the colonies were more favorable. Geolocation data loggers helped to establish wintering and pre-breeding areas of kittiwakes and guillemots in the Barents Sea. Degradation of the seabird colonies is explained by oceanographic changes in the southern Barents Sea, along with the influence of integrative drivers such as food stock, i. e., presence and availability of capelin, and thermal conditions of the water masses determining its distribution in coastal waters.

Abstract:
Abstract. This special issue about selected diseases of nonhuman primates was created in honor of Franz-Josef Kaup, who worked as a primate pathologist at the German Primate Center (DPZ) for 25 years. In 1992, Franz-Josef Kaup started his career at the DPZ as head of the working group Experimental Pathology. Prior to that he worked as a research assistant in the division Electron Microscopy at the Institute of Pathology of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover. He was very experienced in the field of electron microscopy and used this expertise to establish a central electron microscopy laboratory at the DPZ. In the beginning, research of the working group Experimental Pathology was focused on gastrointestinal and respiratory infections and was closely related to projects of the Department of Virology. At that time, experimental infections of rhesus macaques with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and associated opportunistic infections became the main subject of his research. The contribution of Christiane Stahl-Hennig and coauthors about SIV-induced cardiovascular diseases reflects the still ongoing collaboration in this research field. After merging the Experimental Pathology and Primate Husbandry in 1996, Franz-Josef Kaup headed the newly created Department of Veterinary Medicine and Primate Husbandry. This department became the central service unit of the DPZ in 1999 and offered a broad spectrum of services in veterinary diagnostics, primate husbandry, and animal welfare, which was intensively used by many internal and external scientists. In 2001, Walter Bodemer joined the group and the scientific contents expanded with a new focus on the pathogenesis of prion diseases. Some important aspects of this era are summarized in the work of Walter Bodemer.
