Janssen, Diederik F. "From Libidines nefandæ to sexual perversions." History of Psychiatry 31, no. 4 (June 30, 2020): 421–39. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0957154x20937254.

Full text
Abstract:
A conceptual evolution is traceable from early modern classifications of libido nefanda (execrable lust) to early nineteenth-century allusions to ‘perversion of the sexual instinct’, via pluralizing notions of coitus nefandus/sodomiticus in Martin Schurig’s work, and of sodomia impropria in seventeenth- through late eighteenth-century legal medicine. Johann Valentin Müller’s early breakdown of various unnatural penchants seemingly inspired similar lists in works by Johann Christoph Fahner and Johann Josef Bernt, and ultimately Heinrich Kaan. This allows an ante-dating of the ‘specification of the perverted’ (Foucault) often located in the late nineteenth century, and appreciation of pygmalionism and necrophilia as instances of ‘perverted sexual instinct’. In this light, Kaan’s early psychopathia sexualis was less innovative and more ambivalent than previously thought.

Abstract:
Paraules clau: Teodor Llorente, Joan Fuster, Josep M. Bayarri, valencianisme, postguerra..Abstract: This paper analyses the controversy that Joan Fuster and Josep M. Bayarri create on the Valencian press in 1961, as a result of the fifty years after Teodor Llorente’s death. Whereas Fuster demands an intellectual discussion about the leader of the Renaixença in Valencia and the Valencian writers, Bayarri settles for commemorations and celebrations, masses, poetry readings or journal articles about him. This dialectic confrontation conceals two totally opposed ways of understanding the Valencianism of the postwar period. On the one hand, there is a Valencianism that proposes a self-criticism and a reflection; on the other hand, we find a Valencianism or an irrational «regionalism» that is sentimentalist and anti-intellectual. Therefore, this essay analyses the points of view about Llorente made by these two authors. Keywords: Teodor Llorente, Joan Fuster, Josep M. Bayarri, Valencianism, postwar period.

Abstract:
In this article, we take a new look at the initiator of the campaign to prohibit the so-called “Lithuanian” books in the Moscow Tsardom in the first third of the 17th century on the basis of known sources. In addition to the extant documents and indisputable biographical facts, manuscript materials from the azbukovniks of Muscovite corrector David Zamaray are also involved to propose the hypothesis about the initiative in the prosecution of books from the neighboring state that came from Lithuanian emigrant Jozef Kurcewicz, who became archbishop of Suzdal and Tarusa in the Moscow Tsardom. The examination of vocabulary entries of these azbukovniks allows us to establish that some of them were borrowed from the “Lithuanian printing” books, coming to Moscow from the constant correspondent of Jozef Kurcewicz, Metropolitan of Kiev Job Boretsky (such as Homilies of John Chrysostom on the Acts of the Apostles (Kiev, 1624), John Chrysostom’s Homilies on 14 Epistles of Apostle Paul (Kiev, 1623)). We also show that the Kievan theologian Athanasius Kitaichich, who became the first among detractors of Didactic Gospel of Kyrylo Stavrovetsky-Tranquillion, was under the patronage of Jozef Kurcewicz and could reflect his point of view on this book.

Full text
Abstract:
In his much quoted article ‘How to be a Counter-Reformation Saint’, Professor Peter Burke remarks on the ‘crisis of canonisations’ which afflicted the papacy in the middle years of the sixteenth century. That particular crisis, of course, was that there were no canonizations. As the veneration of saints came under attack from the reformers, successive pontiffs thought it politic to refrain from creating yet more. In the long pontificate of the late Pope John Paul II (1978—2005), the longest in papal history apart from that of Pope Pius IX (1846–78) — whom John Paul beatified, along with Pope John XXIII, on 3 September 2000 — there was another crisis of canonizations. In this instance, however, there were, in the eyes of some, far too many of them, devaluing the currency. Even the then Cardinal Josef Ratzinger was heard to utter words of disquiet. Indeed, John Paul’s saint-making policy was a topic almost as much for the secular press as the religious: ‘Catholicism turns to computers as the saints go marching in’ was the headline over a piece inThe Sunday Times.

AbstractThis article responds to the recent claim of Josep Rius-Camps that the Pericope Adulterae was originally composed by Mark. Rius-Camps, in making his creative proposal, has overlooked significant textual and patristic evidence regarding where early Christians confronted the story of Jesus and the adulteress. This evidence suggests that, while the Pericope Adulterae is not original to the Gospel of John, its first location in fourfold gospel tradition was its traditional location, John 7:53-8:11.

Abstract:
Starting from the proposition that modern poetry may well be unimaginable without the city, Francesc Parcerisas provides a critical overview, via Baudelaire, of the representation of Barcelona from Verdaguer’s “A Barcelona” to Gabriel Ferrater’s “La ciutat.” Although the city is not yet the exclusive scenario of literary imagination for Verdaguer, Oller, Rusiñol, and even Maragall, it becomes so for Joan Salvat-Papasseit —the first poet to write, as it were, from rhe belly of Barcelona itself— and for Josep Maria de Sagarra, who takes the city as a spectacle lived from within. Josep Carner, Mercè Rodoreda, Marià Manent, Joaquim Renard, and Pere Quart, no less than a number of foreign writers from the Civil War, all contribute to reflections on the city as the paradigmatic site of the “shared” plays of anonymity, individualism, and desire, of growth, revolution, and utopia, that mark modernity.

The BC-Salvador herbarium, conserved in the Botanic Institute of Barcelona, is the oldest plant collection known in Spain, with 4025 sheets collected between the late seventeenth century and the middle of the eighteenth. Joan Salvador, the main contributor, sent duplicates of some of these sheets to James Petiver and Hans Sloane; the sheets are now conserved as a part of the BM-Sloane herbarium. Both herbaria conserve the testimonies of the first well-known systematic explorations of the Balearic Islands carried out by Joan and Josep Salvador between 1711 and 1725. In this article we list the contents of Petiveriana III , published by Petiver in 1717, in which some Balearic plants are described as new taxa by Joan Salvador, and we point out the sheets of the BC-Salvador and BM-Sloane herbaria on which these diagnoses are based.

Abstract:
From a bird’s eye view, the history of 19th century aesthetics can be cast in terms of strife between two mutually opposed philosophical camps. On the one hand, the champions of a content-oriented understanding of beauty as the sensory manifestation of the idea (the followers of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel) and, on the other hand, the formalists (inspired by Johann Friedrich Herbart) who conceived of beauty as a purely relational category devoid of any content. My paper focuses on the robust development of the formal school at Prague University after 1850 exemplified by the theories of Robert Zimmermann (1824-1898), Josef Durdík (1837-1902), and Otakar Hostinský (1847-1910). It concludes with posing the question whether the structuralist aesthetics advanced in mid-1930s by the Prague Linguistic Circle was not, in fact, an echo of the indigenous Herbartian formalism.

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate the character and etiological basis of German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s mental disorder. From 1898, German neuropsychiatrist Paul Julius Möbius developed the hypothesis that Goethe’s work provided several hints for the notion that the German poet suffered from a distinct bipolar disorder. The paper investigates Möbius’s psychopathographic study on Goethe and his hypothesis of a mood periodicity in Goethe against the mirror of modern concepts. Möbius came to the conclusion that Goethe’s illness was bipolar in character and became visible at intervals of seven years and lasted for about two years. The majority of Möbius’s contemporary psychiatric colleagues (Emil Kraepelin, Max Isserlin, Ernst Kretschmer, Josef Breuer) supported this view which has still not been convincingly challenged. In present-day terms, Möbius’s hypothesis can be best mirrored as a subclinical foundation of mood disorder. Furthermore, with his extensive study, Möbius disproved the common notion that Goethe had suffered from an illness as the result of a syphilitic infection.

Abstract:
In the most recent monograph on John the Baptist Josef Ernst first deals with the Baptist in the Markan gospel and only then, in his second chapter, with the Baptist in Q, although it is generally recognized that Q is older than Mark.1Moreover, in Ernst's opinion there is no contact between Mark and Q. Ernst does not even consider that Mark 1.2bc may be taken from Q (cf. Matt 11.10 = Luke 7.27),2nor does he see in Mark 1.7–8 a more recent, re-written text of a more original version of Q.3The extent of Q in John's preaching is, as in many Q studies, limited to Matt 3.7–12=Luke 3.7–9, 16b–17. In this text Matt 3.11=Luke 3.16 is ‘trimmed’: ‘I baptize you with water, but the Most Powerful One (= God) is coming … He will baptize you with a holy Spirit and fire.’ Thus neither ‘after me’ nor the qualification of John's unworthiness is retained.4

Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores some rare sides of twin research. The focus of this article is the sad plight of the Dionne quintuplets, born in Canada in 1934. However, several other studies belong in this category, such as Dr Josef Mengele’s horrifying twin research conducted at the Auschwitz concentration camp, Dr John Money’s misguided attempt to turn an accidentally castrated male twin into a female, Russian scientists’ cruel medical study of conjoined female twins and Dr Peter Neubauer’s secret project that tracked the development of separated twins. Reviews of current twin research span twins’ representation of self-image, twins with Kleine–Levin Syndrome, heteropaternal twinning in lemurs and factors affecting risk of dental caries. Media coverage includes a pair of high-society models, a book about the ‘Winkelevii’ twins, Super Bowl twin teammates, a family with three sets of fraternal twins, a twin sister surrogate and a near presidential twin.

Abstract:
The Catalan children's author Josep Vallverdú published two crossover stories based on Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island. Les raons de Divendres (Friday's Reasons) (2003) gives an account of the episode of Crusoe and Friday told from the point of view of the servant, whereas El testament de John Silver (John Silver's Will) (2007) deals with the adventures of the pirate after searching for the treasure in the Caribbean. This paper demonstrates how Vallverdú uses his experience as a writer and translator to transform two canonical novels, through transposition into a contemporary context, in a way that facilitates an interaction between Catalan literature and English literature. In keeping with this exploration of literary tradition, the two sequels are also analysed as twenty-first century expressions of a Western literary tradition that abounds in adventure stories set at sea.

Joan Guinjoan's opera Gaudí: el trencadís i l'absolut was commissioned as part of the cultural programme parallel to the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. Guinjoan completed the work in June of that year, but it was not staged until November 2004, the delay due in part to the fire of January 1994 that completely destroyed Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house (this had happened before, in April 1861). The rebuilding was completed in late 1999, though Guinjoan had to wait a further five years to see the opera staged. Librettist Josep Maria Carandell was not so lucky: he died in 2003.

Abstract:
This essay focuses on the Portraits Not Made (1970) by Robert Filliou, a French artist of the postwar neo-avant-garde and a founding member of the international transdisciplinary art movement Fluxus. Interrogating originality and authorship, these ‘Intermedia’ works ‘depict’ artists: George Brecht, Dieter Rot, Dorothy Iannone, Irmeline Lebeer, Josef Beuys, Andy Warhol, John Cage, Arman, and Toi (you). Though virtually blank, they translate between binaries: visual/textual, material/immaterial, made/not made, artist/viewer. Inherently performative, Filliou’s portraits draw the viewer into a ‘poetic economy’ based on three systems: Permanent Creation, the Eternal Network, and the Principle of Equivalence (well made, badly made, not made). Drawing on economic theory shaped by Fluxian absurdity and a Zen-like understanding of reality as at once empty and full, Filliou’s works undermine hierarchies – artistic and political – that privilege individual genius and art as capital exchange. His works propose alternative systems of value by acknowledging the viewer as co-creator.

Popularnost ovog pisca u našoj sredini potvrđuju i prevodi njegovog romana Suchá ratolesť (Suva grana) i dvadeset dve novele na srpskohrvatski jezik. Abstract:
The article deals with the pedagogical school of Antonio Salieri, which was formed in the last quarter of the eighteenth – first quarter of the nineteenth centuries. This school was an artistic phenomenon, given that A. Salieri taught not only one instrument, but a whole set of musical disciplines (composition, counterpoint, conducting, solo and choral singing, harpsichord, stringed instruments, etc.). A. Salieri's School is also unique because of the highest professional level preparation of a whole plaid of talented and even brilliant musicians - Ludwig Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Johann Nepomuk Gummel Franz Xaver Süsmayr, Anselm Hüttenbrüsner, Ignaz Carlethal Moscheles. Cavalieri, Anna Milder-Hauntmann, Anna Kraus-Vranitsky, etc. Based on sources and scientific works, the author of the article argues that the contribution of A. Salieri to the music pedagogy of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is invaluable. Antonio Salieri's pedagogical legacy is a unique phenomenon – he taught composition, instrumentation, instrument, vocals, counterpoint, homophony, polyphony, and most importantly - musical thinking. Many ingenious composers have left a unique legacy, but not many of them can boast of such a large number of students who have shown themselves in all spheres of musical life in the European world. We will not be mistaken when we say that Antonio Salіeri was unique in this. It is unlikely that the pedagogical legacy of another great musician will include pedagogue and methodologist Johann Nepomuk Hummel, the genius composer of all ages L. Beethoven, one of the first romantics – F. Schubert, vocalists - "opera stars'' Catherine Valba-Kanz, Fortunate Franquette, Amalia Josef-Mozatta. And this list can go on and on because the total number is over sixty.
