이윤영 and Yoon Yung Lee. "The Joseon Fine Art Exhibition under Japanese colonial rule." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/196493.

Abstract:
At the turn of the twentieth century, as Japan expanded its territory by colonizing other Asian nations, the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was signed in 1910 and Korea lost its sovereignty. In political turmoil, the formation of national and cultural identity was constantly challenged, and the struggle was not argued in words alone. It was also embedded in various types of visual cultures, with narratives changing under the shifting political climate. This thesis focuses on paintings exhibited in the Joseon Mijeon (조선미술전람회 The Joseon Fine Art Exhibition) (1922-1944), which was supervised by the Japanese colonial government and dominated, in the beginning, by Japanese artists and jurors. By closely examining paintings of ‘local color (향토색)’ and ‘provincial color (지방색),’ which emphasized the essence of a “Korean” culture that accentuated its Otherness based on cultural stereotypes, the thesis explores how representations of Korea both differentiated it from Japan and characterized its relationship with the West. In order to legitimize its colonial rule, politically driven ideologies of pan-Asianism (the pursuit of a unified Asia) and Japanese Orientalism (the imperialistic perception of the rest of Asia) were evident in the state-approved arts. The thesis explores how the tension of modern Japan as both promoting an egalitarian Asia and asserting its superiority within Asia was shown in the popular images that circulated in the form of postcards, manga, magazine illustrations, and more importantly in paintings. Moreover, this project examines both the artists who actively submitted works to the Joseon Mijeon and the group of artists who opposed the Joseon Mijeon and worked outside of the state-approved system to consider the complexity of responses by artists who sought to be both modern and Korean under Japanese colonial rule.

Kim, Meejung.

Full text
Abstract:
During the 20th century, most Korean paintings dating from the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) have been remounted by using the Chinese technique or the Japanese one. Yet, it is possible to reconstruct their original appearance by studying a couple of Korean scrolls that have kept their original mounts. The Portrait of Kang Sehwang by the painter Yi Myeonggi, dated 1783, that belongs to the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, is one of them. Bamboos under the Rain, painted by Yi Chong in 1622, kept by the Guimet Museum in Paris, is a further example, its original feature being the inclusion of a colophon with a calligraphy. In these paintings intended for scholars, the design of the frame, taking the form of a white border with a blue upper and lower part, seems to have been widespread. One may extend the reconstruction of the Korean mounts by analysing the content of the royal archives: the commissioning of screens were documented in detail, revealing all kind of information about their material. Studying the lesser known genre of the “memories of meetings”, at the border between painting and writing, is particularly instructive as some of these have kept their original mounts. Examination of further categories of paintings, whether commemorative, votive or even shamanist, reveal a large extent of solution of mountings, and this is due to the varieties of Korean paper. The making of giant format for Buddhist paintings after the Imjin War (1592-1598) was largely the result of the resistant properties of the Korean paper named hanji

Song, Sun Kwan. "Intellectuals and the state : the resilience and decline of Neo-Confucianism as state ideology in Joseon Korea." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2014. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/20305/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation attempts to revaluate the role of Neo-Confucianism in the historical development of the Joseon dynasty, in particular in relation to the eighteenth and the early nineteenth century. Japanese imperialist historians wanted to justify their colonization by emphasizing the backwardness of Joseon Neo-Confucianism, and Korean nationalist historians wanted to refute Japanese imperialist historiography by finding the seed of modernity in the late Joseon intellectual trends they labelled as Silhak, 'Practical Learning', a school of thought they argued developed in opposition to stagnant and conservative Neo-Confucianism. Despite their different agendas both groups based their research on the assumption that what Korea needed at the time was to 'modernize'. Recent research on Joseon intellectual history has attempted to move beyond the teleological question of Korean modernization, but it has largely been limited to late eighteenth century trends and certain schools of thought. This study, however, situates these intellectual developments in the longer term historical development of the dynasty, and by focusing on how Neo-Confucian intellectuals reacted to a series of dynastic challenges and formulated further Neo-Confucian ideology to overcome them. This provides a more comprehensive understanding of both the role played by Neo-Confucianism as state ideology throughout the dynasty and the reasons for why this intellectual discourse lost much of its momentum in the early nineteenth century.

Abstract:
A comparative study of max weber, joseph schumpeter and jose ortega y gasset reveals that all three were preoccupied by the evolution of the modern world and the future of western civilization. Their uneasiness specifically addresses the paroxystic development of modern enterprises. Bourgeois capitalism, individual progress or entrepreneurship and liberal democracy seem unlikely to survive the new conditions that their own progress contribute to diffuse and, progressively, to impose. Nothing guarantees that societies will be able to continue to benefit from competition, brought about by technical and organizational progress, which mankind seems increasing unable to understand and control. For weber, schumpeter and ortega, modernity does not emerge as an inoffensive "inheritance" : the progressive rationalization, bureaucratization, massification and specialization of the world that our thesis underscores represent, in the discourse of these three authors, the new conditions that accompany the development of modern capitalist societies. These conditions, as on-going processes, menace social practices with an excessive "petrification" and mecanization. This explains the pessimism of the three authors in relation to western capitalist civilization, which they associate, often in ideal-type fashion, with exemplary individual behavior which is henceforth threatened by the rationalization and the objectivation of social spheres of activity : creative minorities for ortega, the heroic entrepreneur for schumpeter and the individual prompted by a "calling" for weber

Abstract:

Ritske, Rensma. "Understanding Joseph Campbell." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3386.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I will be offering an analysis of C.G. Jung’s influence on the theoretical framework of the American comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell. My first main argument will be that Campbell underwent what I am calling a ‘Jungian turn’ around 1968: before this date he was vague and sometimes even dismissive about Jung, while after that date he became suddenly highly positive about Jung’s ideas (particularly about his concept of the archetype). My second main argument will be that this shift in attitude towards Jung occurred because Campbell’s interpretation of Jung changed. Before 1968 Campbell thought of Jung’s concept of the archetype as a ‘closed system’: a completely innate psychological structure that isn’t open to ‘imprinting’ by the environment in any way whatsoever. From 1968 onwards, however, he came to think of the archetype as the equivalent of a so-called ‘open innate-releasing mechanism’, which is the ethologist Konrad Lorenz’s term for a psychological structure that, although it has an innate component as well, is nevertheless open to ‘imprinting’ by the environment. As Campbell’s ideas prior to 1968 had been based on this concept, he realised that his own theoretical framework was compatible with Jung’s to a large extent. My final argument will be that the theoretical position which Campbell arrived at in the final phase of his career (which revolves around the concept of the open innate-releasing mechanism, but which has several other specific characteristics) is the same as the interpretation of Jung put forward by the scholar Anthony Stevens. As Stevens’ work is indisputably Jungian in nature, we might therefore draw the conclusion that it is possible to think of Campbell’s work as ‘Jungian’ in nature as well. However, as there are also some important differences between Campbell and Jung, I am arguing instead that we think of Campbell’s work in the final phase of his career as ‘post-Jungian’: this is the scholar Andrew Samuel’s term for a thinker who may not agree with Jung about every single issue, but whose work is still firmly rooted in his core ideas.

Abstract:
This study presents a psychoanalytic examination of Guido Reni's motivations for creating an innovative painting series of St. Joseph and the Christ Child. The seventeenth-century artist developed a new depiction of Joseph as the tender and loving surrogate father of Christ. This new artistic emphasis on the intimate relationship between father and son reveals Reni's own psychological need to create a replacement father. Indeed, contemporary biographers report that Reni suffered from anxiety and an aversion to women throughout his life. These odd behavioral traits appear to have stemmed from Reni's lack of a supportive father figure. Thus, the artist created a symbolic artistic substitute of Joseph, who was himself a replacement figure for God, in order to fill this void in his own life.

Abstract:
Nobel Prize Laureate Joseph Brodsky is a key figure in Soviet Russian literature. Expelled from the USSR in 1972, he became a US citizen in 1977 and Poet Laureate of the United States in 1991. In this essay, I have sought to examine the state of exile perceived in Brodsky’s poems. Using Russian literary critic Viktor Shklovsky’s concept of defamiliarization, I have strived to illuminate the formal composition of this state – its technique. This formalist approach, however, has one flaw: it fails to acknowledge the fact that the literature of exile, as pointed out by Edward Said, must never be reduced to mere ‘text’ in the narrow, technical sense. In consequence, the study of such literatures must seek to reconcile text and experience, literature and life. I thus hope that, while focusing mainly on the artistic creation of a state of exile within the text, this study may also shed some light on the extra-textual qualities of the literature of exile.

As immemorial reserves of the human condition, the myths are present in all societies. They organize cosmovisions, propose solutions to dilemmas, enigmas and contradictions that the real world cannot solve. As machines of time suppression, as defined by Claude Lévi-Strauss, the mythic narratives do not submit themselves to the linearity of history. Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), centerpiece of this thesis, a north-american born in New York, occupies a place of great remark in the pantheon of mythological interpretations. The greatness of his work is more than recognized, although the comprehension of his ideas still remains shy in Human Sciences. It is a body of work that is open to the various cultural devices which, beyond science, include literature and cinema, the latter being responsible for the popularization of Campbell‟s ideas with the Star Wars series. The thesis invests in the life and work dialogism from a bibliographic incursion; it traces the most representative itineraries of Campbell‟s life (Stephen and Robin Larsen) which led him to discuss the functions and potentialities of myth in contemporary society; it sketches the scenery of science in the interior from which emerges the north-american mythologist; it exposes a synthetic archaeology of the figures which constitute The Hero of a Thousand Faces; it exposes the author‟s arguments concerning his treatment of the recurring themes in mythical narratives (cultural diversity) towards the universality of culture (archetypical unity of the myths); it presents the chronological mapping of the author‟s work in the original editions in English and its translations in Brazil; it exposes and problematizes stemming from the research on the Thesis‟ Database of Capes the resonance of Campbell‟s ideas in the Brazilian scientific production (1990-2010); and it presents, in full, interviews with two experts and translators of the author‟s works to Portuguese. The central argument of this thesis is the indissoluble relationship between the author‟s lived experience and interest for the study of myths, that is, the contingencies of life which illuminate the choice of a study theme, above all those which are rooted in infancy and adolescence. Because he is a transdisciplinary thinker who moved in the dominions of art, literature, science and religion, the polyphony contained in his compared study of world mythologies demanded, from this research, a dialogue with authors from different and complementary areas like Carl Gustav Jung, Jean-Pierre Vernant, Edgar Morin among others. The basic interpretative soil centered on nineteen fundamental works translated in Brazil. The thesis has as a horizon to establish connections between science and arts, towards the constitution of a fundamental anthropology of universalist, complex and transdisciplinary base

Abstract:

Paris 7, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA070049.

Full text
Abstract:
Our analysis focuses on Joseph Addison's conception and practice of language, as exposed in his periodical essays and more generally his prose. If Addisonian periodicals have been variously interpreted, it has seldom been considered how they could be also read as a possible popularization of Locke's theories on words, or more generally as a transmission of linguistic theories and cultural attitudes towards language to a vast readership (both in Europe and in America, and well until the XIXth century). We therefore endeavour in a first part to recreate Addison's social and cultural 'milieu,' to consider thé various conceptions of language it exposed him to, and to appreciate the respective influences of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Our second part deals with the peculiar status Addison bestows upon John Locke, the latter becoming a philosophical landmark as well as an intellectual façade or mask for Joseph Addison; and questions the assumption that Addison wrote primarily as a popularizer. Our third part is devoted to Addison's practice and observation of language - his obsessive concern for signs, his amateur attempt at establishing a semiotics of urban space and sartorial codes - which yet rarely complies with Lockean theories. Addison's paradoxical interpretation and practice of linguistic theories lead him to the unsolved - and unsolvable - dead-end of ambiguity. This position however provides him with unbounded powers of literary creation, endlessly dividing yet enriching his periodical essays

Abstract:
Jude the Obscure is not only Thomas Hardy´s last but probably also his bleakest novel. Even the epigram on the frontispiece - 'The letter killeth [but the spirit giveth life]' - can be read as having negative forebodings; it can, however, also be interpreted as a commentary on the 'nature' of language and on the absolute necessity of understanding its founding mechanisms such as absence, difference and deferral if one is to lead a happy and meaningful life and if one endeavors to claim the freedom and the responsibility to construct one´s gender identity. This essay thus centers on the extent to which Hardy´s protagonist Jude Fawley, a man who desperately clings to the illusion of a transcendental signified, is able to understand and put into practice Hardy´s epigram when constructing his masculinity. Therefore, the focus of inquiry will be the hitherto largely neglected discursive construction of an ill-fated male gender identity in a discursive universe where 'nobody did come, because nobody does' and where taking words literally has lethal consequences.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to present the life and work of Josef Bok, a Czech flutist from the first half of the 20th century. It brings information on his artistic development and on people who influenced his professional growth, it speaks about his time in Russia in the historical context, and last but not least it deals with his pedagogical activities at music schools in Brno and Prague. It also presents ?Škola hry na flétnu? (Flute Practice Book), a musical-didactic work written by J. Bok in cooperation with Rudolf Černý. The thesis tries to analyze this publication and compare it with the contemporary way of playing the flute. It marginally touches Bok?s role as a composer and a piano player. The significance of Josef Bok is evaluated through subjective observations and memories of other flute players and family members in the conclusion.
