Carreres, Pera Joan. "Ideari i poètica de Josep Maria Capdevila." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/4827.

Full text
Abstract:
El tercer volum inclou l'epistolari a Garganta, Riba i Joan Alcover, i la bibliografia.

Entre los libros de crítica y estética, destacan Poetes i crítics, Amics i terra amiga y Estudis i lectures.
The thesis consists of three volumes. The central part of first volume is made up of the study of the critical ideology and the poetic of Capdevila and the work he published (Chapters 3-5). Preceding a biographical study and approach to Capdevila's philosophy (1- 2) and following the criticism of Capdevila's work (Chapter 6). The second volume gathers together an anthology of little-known texts by Capdevila. The third volume including the collected letters -to Garganta, Riba and Joan Alcover- and the bibliography.
Josep Maria Capdevila (Olot 1892 - Banyoles 1972) was a Christian humanist who maintained the spirit of the "philosophia perennis". Saint Thomas gave order and cohe-rence to Capdevila's thought; Joubert, recapitulatory discernment; De Sanctis the working system, certainty in perception, and that critical look capable of effecting -with aesthetical criteria- the choice which time realises in the selection of works and authors.
Unlike Hegel and Benedetto Croce, who circumscribe aesthetics to the teory of the arts, Capdevila sees in aesthetics a philosofhy of beauty, tied to the concepts of truth and good. He follows, in this aspect, the thougth of and of the Barcelona School, of common sense, open to dialogue between science and faith.
In his reflections on criticism, Capdevila made a subtle distinction between historic truth and artistic truth, in the interior of which he situated poetic truth. He considers that works of art and literature bear each one of them their own truth. And this truth can be discerned througt the exegesis of the text, based on a double criterion: aestethical and ethical. This is one of the critic's functions. It is also, to discern from the poetic falseness the genuine tradition manifested in the all-time classics: Dante, Llull, Shakespeare, Cevantes, Goethe, Manzoni, Mistral...
From the optics of this -and taking as a reference the mediaevel classics- he made a series of contributions to Catalan literature: he revalued the prose of Verdaguer, he studied Maragall (the aestethics, the criticism and the poetry), he made know in Catalonia, the work of Costa Llobera and Joan Alcover, he studied the narrative of Ruyra and he vindicated his poetry, and he indicated the importance of Carner in the dignifying of urban language. Finally, being conscious of forming part of a new generation, he effected a certain office of grand master with friends and pupils: Riba, Sagarra, Carles Soldevila. The life way made him to follow his masterful through the press (La Paraula Cristiana, El Matí).
Interested in the expansion of culture, he published manuals (of correspondence and philosophie) and some anthological collections amongst which stands out the lyrical anthology.
Among the critics and aestetics the most known books published are Poetes i crítics, Amics i terra amiga and Estudis i lectures.

Carabí, Bescós Guillem. "La Reforma de Casa Bofarull (1913-1933), de Josep M. Jujol." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/83458.

Full text
Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040157/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The nature and level of presence of the spatial and temporal referents have considerably differed in the Catalan theatre for the last forty years or so, at least from one period to another but certainly also from one author to another. Since the mid-1980s, playwriting has largely tended to refuse any dramatic action that would have been rooted in any geographic location or any exact point in history and, in particular, to avoid the representations of Barcelona and/or Catalonia. This thesis proposes a study of the treatment of the referents in question through some plays written by Josep M. Benet i Jornet and Sergi Belbel at a time when the Catalan dramaturgy often seems to turn away from the « real » world which has ceased to be a direct universe of reference. Benet and Belbel explore reality from the macrocosmic scale of the universe to the domestic and intimate microcosms, thanks to varied modes and dramatic principles, thereby giving rise to quite varied space-time structures. One may then observe different results of the presence and/or absence of reality: the erasing of identity markers or, on the contrary, the omnipresence of geographic and historical references, the feeling of the dilution of the world, the paradoxical effect of the legibility of historical reality despite its obvious invisibility, etc. Through a selection of eight plays – Desig, El gos del tinent, Olors and Salamandra by Benet, Elsa Schneider, Tàlem, El temps de Planck and Forasters by Belbel –, the analysis of spatial and temporal referents aims to grasp the « dramaturgic fields » emphasized by two major figures of contemporary Catalan drama

Full text
Abstract:
The main objectives of the thesis are: to verify and confirm the fundamental role of drawing in the training of the architect, portraying Jujol as a reference as a master of this discipline. Analyze his evolution, subsequent to his nonarchitechtonical drawing, inseparable from his underlying ideology in his conception of architecture and finally, comparing him with other archirectural masters, such as Ruskin, Le Corbusier and Asplund among the modern architects and art classic artists and others such as Enric Miralles among the contemporary masters. The research would show that the Jujol method and his seemingly remarkable intimate way of acting in which architecture is mixed with disciplines such as drawing, painting, sculpture, crafts and all forms of design. Concluding that it actually presents important coincidences comparable to that of some architects of his time such as Asplund and Le Corbusier, later to Miralles and currently to Llinás. Former students and famous architects such us,Coderch de Sentmenat,Federico Correa y Oriol Bohigas, recognize Jujol as a great architect and professor assessing his great creativity and greatly influential in their training. Recognized researchers such as Carlos Flores, and renown international contemporary artists as Antonio Tapies, consider Jujol as such a great artist that he should be given the recognition he deserves. Flores sets his standard of creativity and imagination up to Picasso’s level. His architecture is a mix of artistic disciplines, with drawing as reference but combining it and making drawing as the starting point element, but together with sculpture, crafts and all the modalities of design. He could be considered a renaissance architect or an “artist and craftsman”. The thesis, which is based on drawing as a discipline, includes plenty of original and unpublished material from to "Archivo Jujol" directed by his son José Mª, and the E.T.S.A.B. library's documentary collection, work´s of the students he had during the period he taught in the university. Jujol as well as those who met them know the extraordinary importance of drawing and handcrafts in general as the best and most indispensable training tool. It gathers important testimonies, highlighting among them those of : • Recognized architects who were his students as Oriol Bohigas and Federico Correa who later became professors at Architecture School of Barcelona. • Others who have collaborated during his time as a student in his office as Joan de Ribot. • Pere Virgili, Master Builder who have known him in his professional work, when he was his apprentice at 14 years old. • Specialist of Jujol’s works in every aspect, both as an architect and / or artist; as is the case of researcher Carlos Flores., and architect Josep Llinás, who often intervened in projects to restore his works. • Jordi Bonet and Jordi Faulí, outstanding "gaudinistas" (“Gaudi´s fans”) continuators of the Sagrada Familia, project in work in which Jujol worked hand in hand with Gaudi. Drawing as a discipline is always present as the guiding thread of the thesis, which serves as a comparison discipline based on the concept and idea of Ruskin, by architects apparently as different as Le Corbusier, Asplund, and Jujol; from this one of Miralles, who died at the early age of 45. It exposes the unknown similarity of Le Corbusier and Jujol in the first decade of the twentieth century and the parallelism that can be established with Miralles in reference to the "artistic manual" of both. To verify that fact, -the contemporaneity of Jujol, his method- and his possibilities applied to the learning and progress of architecture today, -apparently so disregarded- not only in the career but also throughout the exercise of the profession, the central role and actualism of the “traditional drawing” in that process; was one of the objectives of the present investigation.

Devaux, Vanessa. "Joseph Mayseder (1789-1863) : a Viennese violinist and composer." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/67546/.

Full text
Abstract:
Joseph Mayseder (1789-1863) was one of the most significant musical figures in Vienna in the first half of the nineteenth century as a violinist and composer. His participation in musical life in Vienna was of central importance, as a ‘Soloist’ at the Hofkapelle, as the Director of the Orchestra at the Kärntnertortheater and as a friend of Beethoven. The dissertation offers an in-depth survey of Mayseder’s achievements in Vienna in his lifetime. A biographical overview of Mayseder’s life in Vienna is given, evaluating the role of his persona as a musician. Chapter 1 focuses on Mayseder as a violinist, drawing attention to his performances with new, detailed information taken from contemporary sources on his musical activities. The second chapter explores Mayseder’s compositions and highlights his key compositional elements in more detail, such as his relationship to the violin, his playing technique and his performance practice as a soloist and with an ensemble. Chapter 3 analyses Mayseder’s role in context, illustrating his importance for the development of solo violin music and its performance in this period in history. The appendices consist of the Thematic catalogue that presents a detailed listing of the complete works of this composer. The concluding catalogue provides an overview of public solo violin performances in Vienna between 1800 and 1828.

Abstract:

Cooper, Alan. "Making the weather in contemporary jazz : an appreciation of the musical art of Josef Zawinul." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2012. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/366837/.

Full text
Abstract:
Josef Zawinul (1932-2007) holds a rare place in the world of jazz in view of the fact that as a European he forged a long and distinguished musical career in America. Indeed, from a position of relative obscurity when he arrived in New York in 1959, he went on to become one of contemporary jazz’s most prolific and commercially successful composers. The main focus of this dissertation will be Zawinul’s rise to prominence in American jazz during the 1960s and 1970s. In this vital period of his creative life he is associated with a variety of jazz contexts: performing with Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley’s band as a hard bop pianist in the early 1960s; developing new approaches as a composer and keyboard player for Adderley’s group during the ‘soul jazz’ period (1966 to 1969); recording independently under his own name (1966 to 1970); collaborating with Miles Davis in the late 1960s and early 1970s; and co-founding the influential contemporary jazz ensemble Weather Report (early 1970s onwards). Most significantly, he was a key figure (both as a performer and composer) in the new electro-acoustic jazz that emerged in the mid-1960s and his unwavering commitment to this hybrid idiom has left a substantial and wide-ranging body of work. Given the impact and scale of Zawinul’s contribution to contemporary jazz in the second half of the twentieth century, it surely prompts the question: why has there been a dearth of scholarly discussion concerning his artistic legacy? With the aim of rectifying this omission, it is hoped that this dissertation will therefore go some way towards bringing long overdue critical engagement with his music. To this end, this study will examine a selection of Zawinul’s mature works and attempt to explicate not only the diverse range of influences (musical and cultural) that were essential to his artistic development but also the nature of his aesthetic eclecticism from which he created an individual compositional language.

Ingham, David Keith. "Mediation and the indirect metafiction of Randolph Stow, M. K. Joseph, and Timothy Findley." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25819.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to explore the range of indirect metafiction as presented in three exemplary novels, this dissertation begins by examining how the assumptions of "realism" on the one hand and "postmodernism" on the other relate to the paradigmatic triad of story-teller, story, and audience. From this context emerges the view that the range of metafiction is determined by how it reveals the processes and nature of fiction according to a spectrum of mediation: that of the writer between his "raw materials" and the text, that of the text between writer and reader, and that of the reader between the text and his interpretation. Indirect metafiction (or "pretend realism") mediates between realism and postmodernism, revealing without breaking the illusions of realism. Each of the next three chapters, after initially placing the key novel within the context of the author's work as a whole, discusses in detail a novel whose metafictional focus is on one of the three mediations. Accordingly, Chapter II focusses on Randolph Stow's The Girl Green as Elderflower (1980) and on the way it reveals the mediation of the author by presenting a writer's fiction as a synthesis of his personal and literary experiences. Chapter III notes how M. K. Joseph's A Soldier's Tale (1976) reflects the mediation of the reader by depicting a writer's interpretation and literary redaction of an oral tale. And Chapter IV shows how Timothy Findley's Famous Last Words (1981) demonstrates the mediation of the text by presenting a writer whose text "crystallizes" the illusions of fiction, then undercuts and exposes them. The analyses of the key texts employ both postmodern and traditional critical approaches, demonstrating them to be complementary; by noting the interpenetration of metafictional and traditional import and significance, the analyses also highlight the mediary nature of indirect metafiction. The fifth chapter draws theoretical conclusions from ideas in the practical chapters: from metafictional revelations through the paradigm of mediation comes an "anatomy" of fiction, delineating its elements; from a sense of how the mind "structures" experience through "fictional" representations of both "reality" and fictional texts comes a "physiology," a sense of how fiction works through language. This discussion leads to definitions of realistic, unrealistic, and self-conscious fiction, and of metafiction, both direct and indirect; the dissertation concludes by remarking on the inter-relations of language, "fiction," and "reality."

Metz, 1997. http://docnum.univ-lorraine.fr/public/UPV-M/Theses/1997/Chevassus.Valerie.LMZ9716.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that roth's entire works may be considered as his "original novel", a notion coined by the psychoanalyst N. Berry to refer to the account of the patient under analysis. In other words we have to prove that for roth writing about oneself and creating one's own identity through writing may be both achieved in literary creation in order to determine the strategies the author uses to tell about, then recreate himself through writing, we search in the texts for the moment when the action of the creative process carries the author along so far that he can't control his production anymore and thus reveals, without his knowing it, some aspects of his psyche he was not aware of. The same process governs what we will call "verbal fabrication" - rather than "mythomania" as the biographer D. Bronsen put it - yet, the dissembling of reality roth uses in conversations has a specific goal that can only be reached through writing : roth's work may be understood as an "autofiction" which leads to the elaboration of a "narrative identity" that may allow a restructuring of the ego in reality. In order to demonstrate this hypothesis, we will examine two major chapters in roth's "original novel" which correspond to nerve centres in his life : the novel of the difficulty of being and the "family romance". The difficulty of being expresses itself in the declaration of poverty, in the texts about the war and in the representation of the "Heimkehrer" ; roth builds his "family romance" through the creation of the mother-character and of the father-figure and in the description of his native soil. The study of these themes enables us to understand how literary writing proceeds to locate psychic deficiencies, to displace or reverse them into the opposite, to transform or to overcome them, in brief to achieve a "creative surpassing

Bocquet, Antoine. Paris, EHESS, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012EHES0105.

Full text
Abstract:
Is there a politics of individualism ? - The work of spiritualist philosopher and philanthropist Joseph-Marie de Gérando (1772-1842) appears as a good point of view on this issue, although the idea of a sociological spiritualism may seem paradoxical. This study follows therefore what happens to comparative method through the various aspects of the philosophy of this little known although crucial author. His contributions to the Ideology and psychology, anthropology, grammar, comparative literature, philanthropy and administration, his work for the education of deaf-mutes are considered in this perspective. The main result of this work can be summarized simply as the spiritual paradox. Spiritualism, which Gérando is one of the first representatives, as it gets into interiority, opens to concrete practices and to an original form of comparative approachs, as if its introspective tendency naturally led him to a turnaround point able to show the weakness of subject "dispositif". In another aspect, we establish how took place the transition from "ideology", in the sense that this term has for Ideologues, sensualist philosophers of the Directoire, to the "ideology" in the sense of cultural anthropology (the social ideas). From this point of view, the specific contribution of spiritualism would have been to constitute the mind as an area of elaboration for the concept of "social"

Robarts, Leslie Michael Martyn. "A bibliographical and textual study of the wordbooks for James Miller's Joseph and his brethren and Thomas Broughton's Hercules, oratorio librettos set to music by George Frideric Handel, 1743-44." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2008. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/188/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis recovers the wordbooks for Handel’s oratorios from their neglect in literary and musical history. Taking Joseph and his Brethren and Hercules as samples, it shows the essential place of wordbooks in the original oratorio experience and challenges an editorial and performance practice which favours music over words. Chapter One presents editions of the wordbooks of Joseph and Hercules in order to offer a transmissional history, and Chapter Two reclaims the literariness of the librettos and demonstrates their effectiveness. Chapter Three examines the two librettos in the composer’s and copyist’s manuscript musical scores prior to first publication of the wordbooks and reveals verbal changes made during composition of the music. Chapter Four explores the significance of wordbooks for the booksellers of Joseph and Hercules and reconstructs aspects of wordbook production and consumption. Chapter Five identifies the wordbooks’ printer and places wordbook production in the context of book trade regulation and copyright. Chapter Six discusses the material identity of the wordbooks and the design principles which supported their reception. The thesis concludes that access to printed librettos is essential to redress the verbal-musical imbalance in contemporary performances of Handel’s oratorios.

Abstract:
This thesis sets out to consider Joseph Conrad's and J. M. Coetzee's approaches to, and interrogations of, theories of ethics and identity. In pursuit of this task, the study presents an analysis of the authors' distinctive and complementary address to the ways in which certain influential concepts are 'applied' by, and within, their cultures. Especially relevant in this respect, as extensive preoccupations of both Conrad and Coetzee, are the authors' literary expressions of 'consciousness' and 'conscience'. In noting the special attention paid by these authors to the writing of consciousness, and to the consciousness of writing, the thesis illustrates particular thematic representations and engagements with the notion of the 'self and the 'human good'.
