Abstract:
Immediately after the Civil War, Josep Pla took some decisions—not merely aesthetic, but also commercial—about his work that would lead him to publish his books with five different publishers. This article provides an explanation for these decisions, supported by unpublished correspondence between Josep Pla and the Editorial Joventut (see appendix) and the recently-published correspondence between Pla and Cruzet.

The period described by the thesis allows us to discover an, until now, unknown josep pla, and also to value his evolution. Having find the reason of his literature - to write vast memories in order to collect and preserve from distruction a period of the life and culture of catalonia - he left that intention for politics. Cought by the immediate events of the end of primo de rivera dictatorship, the republic and the civil war, he did not make up his task as a memorialist until the postwar

Abstract:

Abstract:
At the end of the World War II, following the Allies victory and the beginning of the Cold War, the Franco regime allowed to publish, with restrictions, books in Catalan. At this point, Josep Pla taking advantage of this opportunity, published his book “Viatge a Catalunya” in 1946. From that moment, the writer began to review, reform and expand all the work done prior to the Civil War, including unpublished material. The re-writing process was non-stop during all those years. His literary production is not limited to chronicles of his time, but it can also be seen as an example of high literature. In fact, Pla’s literary work integrates and overflows with different genres at the same time. In addition, a detailed historical analysis of the Franco dictatorship helps us to understand the great contribution made by Josep Pla into the Catalan literature.

Paris 4, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996PA040121.

Full text
Abstract:
Although J. Pla (1897-1981) himself stated that his writings were autobiographical, they create several problems when they are so considered. Made up of false private diaries, pseudo autobiographical writings, literary portraits, writings about journeys, biographies and political articles, Josep Pla's works are presented as material drawn from his own life. Josep Pla (a journalist, a compulsive writer whose works in the Catalan language amount to more than forty volumes) often makes explicit his own poetics which, according to him, consist of a rhetoric of a natural style, aesthetics of negligence, use of local subjects, etc. He offers a public image that he uses to make his writings more credible. A constant captatio benevolentiae is also used to persuade and convince the reader that whatever he says comes directly from reality, and it also encourages a strictly referential reading of his discourse. These characteristics give rise to many problems about the biographical genre and create an irreducible ambivalence at the intersection of two lines: the referential and the self-fictional. The first aims at representing true facts, and the nominal identity of author, narrator and character is constantly preserved. In the second, however, the relations of reference are called into question, the division between personal experiences and the imagination is blurred, and there are many identity games concerning the author)

Abstract:
This paper is the result of the research done for the study of Josep Pla’s Viatge a l’Amèrica del Sud (1957), from the volume En Mar (OC 18) 1971, made up from his collaborations for the magazine Destino. In this book, the author presents, with the structure of a diary, the experiences of the trip he made for the magazine between December 1957 and March 1958, and which were published as "Cartas" and articles in the section "Calendario sin fechas”" between January and July 1958. This study has its origins in the interest to show some of the literary projects resulting from the trips Pla made between 1956 and 1960 for the magazine Destino, projects which were already introduced in L’aventura breu i meravellosa com un foc d’encenalls (Josep Pla’s collaborations for Destino, 1956-1960), in 2008, a piece of work for the Master in Catalan Studies: language and Literature and its applications, written by Rosa M. Perez Buendia, the author of this thesis. An important part of the investigation focuses on the analysis of the material for the press which Pla chose, organized, revised and rewrote to develop a story based on a real journey. In the first place, we present the articles published in Destino: an analysis according to the contents and the literary vision of these writings. Also, by comparing them with the original manuscripts, we take into consideration the role of the correctors in the final product. Next, there is an approach to how the book was actually made, referring to the texts Pla had already published and those which had been created for the occasion. As for the texts from Destino, we study which of them the author chose and the order in which they appear in the diary, because, unlike the reports, they followed the route of the voyage made in 1958. We also examine the way they were presented in the book: either reworded or as a report. Regarding the newly created material, we suggest the existence of a travel journal. Finally, through the original manuscripts, we have collected data on the role of editors in the final product. Last but not least, there is the literary study of the book Viatge a l’Amèrica del Sud (1957) which focuses on the newly created diary, taking also into consideration part of what has been analyzed with respect to the texts from Destino and its shaping into a diary. In this paper, apart from the actual study of a book based on Pla’s collaborations for Destino, we raise several questions about the relationship between the writer and the press, specifically the magazine Destino: the conditions under he worked, how he worked and what the relationship with the owner of the magazine, Josep Verges, was like. We also mention other aspects, such as the projects during this period, especially those which refer to the publisher Selecta and the relationship with the publisher Joseph M. Cruzet. We also take into account the political context, both at the time of the trip and at the time when the book was published, in 1971.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis, entitled “Geography as a descriptive narrative and as a pedagogy of our world. A case study of the landscape literature of Josep Pla”, sets itself the primary goal of examining the points of convergence between two forms of knowledge of long-standing tradition that present a series of notable links and associations, namely, geography and literature. This goal, addressed initially from a theoretical point of view, is also analysed from an applied perspective: that is, with reference to the writer, Josep Pla, and to part of his work – specifically, that which speaks directly of the territory and the landscape. Finally, and drawing on the preceding study, the thesis examines the possibilities afforded by Pla’s landscape literature for serving as the basis for a proposal aimed at recovering geographical description and narrative for educational and learning purposes. The thesis, presented in three parts – each comprising two chapters, is founded on the premise of establishing the essential validity of writing, understood in both its descriptive and narrative dimensions, as a tool at the service of geographical knowledge and of the transmission of this knowledge. In this context, geographers and writers take centre stage. A whole series of ideas emerging in our current social context, such as the common good, the values of everyday landscapes and of shared cultural experiences, lead us to believe that the convergence of geography with literature can take many different paths as it imbeds itself in society and as it contributes to enriching and intensifying the world experience of each and every one of us.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay is the basis for a thesis, according to which an urban transcendent planning tool belonging to the functional ideology of the Modern Movement may be acknowledged as being of prime importance. The theme is the Plan for Bogotá, elaborated in several phases by Le Corbusier and Josep Lluís Sert & Paul Lester Wiener between 1949 and 1963, This is a work which has been very sparsely mentioned in international historiography of architecture and/or urban planning, and has generated little or no critical interest or deep analysis as part of the Latin American regional case1, or particularly, that of Bogotá. This Plan, besides its projectual and instrumental novelties (for its time), is remarkable for its historical, methodological and practical dimensions and for its dialectic between the values and principles that guided it and its final product, the city itself. Through the study of the urban event, of the processes and the product created by this experience, the codes which reverberated through the Bogotá town planning will be eventually identified, then put to work to rescue questions and answers that may contribute ideas and solutions to contemporary town planning. Several significant events point out the historical importance of the Plan. It was not only the second and last time for le Corbusier and Sert ¿ two noted CIAM protagonists ¿ to work together in town planning, 16 years after participating in the Maciá Plan for Barcelona, but also the only Plan for a Latin American city completely worked out by Le Corbusier, having signed a formal contract for that purpose. Like Sert and other renowned architects, Le Corbusier strove to leave his own imprint in Latin America2. In the Colombian scope the Plan may be considered a significant event, being the work of two emblematic figures of the Modern Movement and also for its importance for Colombian society, involving it as a whole in a project that became part of its own future development by the creation of a pioneering instrument for an integral city project, and also for its instrumental content and the legal expression of a compendium of regulations in accordance with the principles and methodology of Modern Urbanism. However, this, like many other ideas and proposals towards modernization of cities, did not transcend their time nor were they registered in Colombian history as a notably significant chapter (del Castillo, 2003). In its methodological dimension, the Bogotá Plan incorporates several instrumental measures, not used previously in Modern Town Planning, either in its international or its local versions, among which the following may be noted : the proposal of a theoretical city model, summarizing the main elements of urban politics at city, metropolitan and regional levels. The city Civic Center ¿ and its replicas at quarter or ¿barrio¿ level - represents an entirely new urban function. Urban sectors and their street network, arranged in a hierarchy according to the 7v¿s Rule, as the indispensable basic structure for circulation and urban design at an intermediate scale and as a deductive result of Corbusian thought about the shape of cities at that date (Le Corbusier 1951: Jeanneret et al. 1951), 1959 (Bannen Lanata 1991; Cortés 1995; Salmona 2003). The graphic image of the Plan and its version for the CIAM grille, which consisted of a series of plans systematically arranged to show both the form and analysis of the proposals for the city, to be shown in comparison with other plans at the CIAM 8 meeting on The Heart of the City.

Abstract:
ENRESA is the National Spanish Agency responsible of the dismantling of Nuclear Facilities, previous Transfer of ownership of the facility from the Utility to ENRESA. On April 30th 2006, Jose´ Cabrera Nuclear Power Plant (Fig. 1) was definitively shutdown, and two years later, on April 30th 2008, ENRESA requested the transfer of the ownership of the Plant from the Ministry along with the corresponding authorization for performance of the Dismantling and Decommissioning Plan. On February 1st 2010, ENRESA was authorized to initiate the dismantling of Jose´ Cabrera NPP, once the spent fuel has been stored on-site at a dry storage facility (ISFSI). Currently, preparatory activities are underway, including the modification of systems and auxiliary facilities for waste and material management. Main challenges of the project include the removal of major components (vessel, steam generator, pressurizer, main pump and primary loop), and the use of large containers (CE-2b) to reduce segmentation of activated parts.

Abstract:
Since 1984, ENRESA is responsible of the radioactive waste management and the decommissioning of nuclear installations in Spain. The major recent challenge has been the approval of the Sixth General Radioactive Waste Plan (GRWP) as “master plan” of the activities to be performed by ENRESA. Regarding the LILW programme, the El Cabril LILW disposal facility will be described highlighting the most relevant events especially focused on optimizing the existing capacity and the start-up of a purpose–built disposal area for VLLW. Concerning the HLW programme, two aspects may be distinguished in the direct management of spent fuel: temporary storage and long-term management. In this regards, a major challenge has been the decision adopted by the Spanish Government to set up a Interministerial Committee for the establishment of the criteria that must be met by the site of the Centralized Intermediate Storage (CTS) facility as the first and necessary step for the process. Also the developments of the long-term management programme will be presented in the frame of the ENRESA’s R&D programme. Finally, in the field of decommissioning they will be presented the PIMIC project at the CIEMAT centre and the activities in course for the decommissioning of Jose´ Cabrera NPP.

Abstract:
Our research aims at prevention of burnout, which can be a protective factor in preventing career abandonment and can contribute to creating and maintaining a positive workplace climate. It also promotes the mental well-being and resilience of teachers and students. Therefore, burnout of teachers is especially important in Hungary, as the gradually increasing professional and administrative burden, the lack of social esteem, as well as the changed learning-teaching environment and the methodological shortcomings of general teacher training significantly increase the risk of burnout. In our research, the staff of the Somogy County Educational Service Center has been involved, mainly special education teachers. The 116-person sample has been conducted with a version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory developed for educators. In our presentation, the test results are presented. According to our findings, out of the three subscales of the subjects' questionnaire, the highest scores were achieved in the Emotional Exhaustion subscale and the lowest in the Depersonalization subscale. However, the emotional exhaustion subscale did not indicate a high burnout value in the study population. The correlations of burnout risk with age and time spent as a teacher has been also analyzed. Problem-focused and change-oriented psychological counseling models are attracting interest in the international literature today (Egan, 2010). By strengthening resilience and supporting a sense of growth, consultation techniques work to strengthen effective interpersonal communication and help the individual plan constructively for the future (Bonanno, 2004, 2005; Kelley, 2005; Linley & Joseph, 2005; Litz, 2005; Maddi, 2005). All of this are relevant to our research because we plan to provide burnout prevention psychoeducation counseling programs to educators. The literature also mentions the phenomenon of learned helplessness, which has its roots in childhood and is a breeding ground for both depression and burnout (Seligman,1991). Learned inertia can influence members of the helping professions toward passivity (paralysis, loss of control, hopelessness, unresponsiveness) and is therefore particularly burdensome for the individual, along with the challenges of helping professions. Results of our research shed light on the burnout level of special educators, personality traits important for coping and related burnout prevention (e.g., empathy, psychological immune competence) and the applied coping mechanisms that guide burnout prevention psychoeducation as a comprehensive concept.

Abstract:
During the high-level opening session, John Bell, European Commission Director, Directorate General Research & Innovation, European Commission, and Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director praised the cooperation between the EC and ESA, in the context of the Earth System Science Arrangement. They confirmed their willingness to advance towards a better coordination and integration of EC and ESA activities in Polar research. The European Union has been funding a significant number of Polar projects as part of the Framework programmes for Research and Innovation. In 2015, the funding of the EU-PolarNet project was instrumental as it enables stakeholders to coordinate activities across Europe. EU-PolarNet has delivered a number of key outputs among which the Integrated European Research Programme (EPRP). This report is the result of a process involving many players identifying key research and knowledge gaps, feeding into European Commission’s policy making. The launch of the new EU-PolarNet 2 project during the conference showed the willingness of the EU to sustain these coordination efforts. EU-PolarNet 2 will play a key role to reinforce the science to policy interface and to increase coordination of polar research activities at European level, with a better understanding of what is done at national level. EU-PolarNet 2 will also lead the coordination of the EU Polar Cluster in close cooperation with the ESA Polaractivities. The EU Polar Cluster, launched in 2016, has been extending in terms of number of projects (21 projects and 2 initiatives) and it confirmed its objective to reinforce cooperation across projects on a number of areas of common interest. Transnational cooperation of all involved actors (researchers and stakeholders) and European-wide coordination of Polar research efforts are decisively important, particularly in tackling major societal challenges such as climate change. Scientific knowledge has to be appropriately disseminated to inform policymakers with a high level of expertise and to support evidence-based policy making. The projects from the ESA Polar Cluster confirmed the need to work closer with the EU funded projects. This is fully supported by ESA, which launched a call for tender to facilitate innovative scientific developments through collaborative research and networking opportunities in the Polar research domain and in particular between the ESA and EU Polar Clusters.
