Abstract:
‘Under Joseph Conrad’s Eyes’: A Review of Monika Malessa-Drohomirecka’s Konwencje, stereotypy, złudzenia. Relacje kobiet i mężczyzn w prozie Josepha Conrada [Conventions, Stereotypes, Delusions: Male-Female Relationships in the Prose of Joseph Conrad] (Universitas, Kraków 2017, 334 pages) The review concerns a Conrad monograph by Monika Malessa-Drohomirecka titled Konwencje, stereotypy, złudzenia. Relacje kobiet i mężczyzn w prozie Josepha Conrada [Conventions, Stereotypes, Delusions: Male-Female Relationships in the Prose of Joseph Conrad], which appeared in print at Universitas as a post-doctoral publication in 2017. As the first full-fledged study on the subject on the Polish market, the book fills a gap in the Conrad studies in Poland in the area that has been well covered in the American and West European Conrad studies. The monograph explores male-female relationships in almost all of Conrad’s oeuvre in the context of his biography, the philosophical and literary trends as well as conventions of his epoch. However, as the review points out, albeit in itself nuanced, Malessa-Drohomirecka’s book seems to lack in in-depth analysis and ‚close reading’ at the expense of scope. Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this research was to identify the forms of hyperbole found in Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The research data were taken from the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The writer applied Claridge’s theory to classify the forms of hyperbole. There are seven forms of hyperbole. They are single-word hyperbole, phrasal hyperbole, clausal hyperbole, numerical hyperbole, hyperbolic superlatives, hyperbolic comparison, and hyperbolic repetition. This study was qualitative research. This study reveals that seven forms of hyperbole according to Claridge (2011) were found in Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The forms are single-word hyperbole, phrasal hyperbole, clausal hyperbole, numerical hyperbole, the role of the superlative, comparison, and repetition. From the occurrence of all seven forms of hyperbole, it was found that the most form of hyperbole was clausalhyperbole. In conclusion, it can be said that Joseph Conrad used all forms of hyperbole in the novel Heart of Darkness.

Abstract:
Loneliness is one of the recurrent factors in the novels of Joseph Conrad. This malaise crops up time and again in the novel of Conrad. The heroes of Herman Melville, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Fydor Dostoevsky, Franz Kafka, R. L. Stevenson, and many more suffer from a sense of alienation. The protagonists of Joseph Conrad also prefer to direct their own life not by social norms but by their own whims, ideals and visions, which gradually take them to the extremes of loneliness and despair.

Tkachuk, Olena. "MULTICULTURALISM BY CONRAD-EMIGRANT." Polish Studies of Kyiv, no. 35 (2019): 376–80. http://dx.doi.org/10.17721/psk.2019.35.376-380.

Full text
Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of the multiculturalism by Joseph Conrad, the English writer and the world classic of the 20th century, who, due to the preservation of his Polish national-cultural identity, and by estrangement from this identity in his artistic consciousness, was able to influence the intellectual and artistic atmosphere in England of his times. In this way, the Polish identity became a background for Conrad’s artistic creativity, and at the same time, universal values and criteria were the key to the successful acculturation in English society in its one of the most effective strategies – the integration strategy. In this case Conrad acquired another national-cultural identity, English, – while retaining his native, Polish. Undoubtedly, one of the most important issues touched by almost all researchers is his arrival in English literature, a Pole in origin, who only arrived in England in the twenty-first year, actually emigrating, and for a very short time becaming a venerable writer. It should be noted that, taking into account the peculiarities of English mentality, the task was rather uneasy. All this undoubtedly led to the development of a variety of approaches to understanding the creative personality and rich heritage of Joseph Conrad. Foreign literary and critical academic circles, which introduced the concept of «new English literature» (meaning the post-colonial period), do not take into account such figures of the English literary process as Joseph Conrad, whose work falls out of its chronological framework, and indicates that multicultural literature appeared on the approaches to the twentieth century. However, only nowadays it was possible that such an approach was based on the principles of multiculturalism, that is, the phenomenon justified in the 90s of the XX century, although, as the majority of scholars testify, it existed for a long time in cultural studies, literary criticism, art history and philosophy. We have chosen this approach. The research is devoted to the study of the problems of national-cultural identity by Joseph Conrad, as well as the mechanism of his acculturation in the conditions of emigration.

“Austria Is the Least Awful to Me” (Joseph Conrad-Korzeniowski’s 1914 Note on the Polish Problem) The article attempts at a presentation and an interpretation of a relatively unknown text by Joseph Conrad, namely, his Memoriał w sprawie polskiej [Note on the Polish Problem], written in Zakopane in 1914. The author of this article by interpreting the text of that document proves that it was created – to a great extent − under the influence of trialist conceptions of Galician conservatives, predominantly, an eminent lawyer from Kraków, Ph.D. Teodor Kosch.
