Cannon, Jeffrey G. The Image as Text and Context in Early Mormon History. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190274375.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
In “The Image as Text and Context in Early Mormon History,” Jeffrey G. Cannon examines the creation of images that capture aspects of the foundational period of Mormonism though made in subsequent decades. Understanding the context for the creation of these images facilitates a discernment of their full meaning to later generations. While very few contemporary images of early Mormonism exist, later attempts to document or illustrate the movement’s origins inform the Mormon attitudes of their own past. Cannon looks at several frequently used photographs or images and the context in which they were created, revealing in them the rivalry and insecurity over competing succession claims and how Mormons made sense of their identity following the death of Joseph Smith.

Shrock, Dennis. Choral Monuments. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190469023.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides extensive and in-depth material about eleven epoch-making choral masterworks that span the history of Western culture from the Renaissance to the modern era. Included are Missa Pange lingua (Josquin Desprez); Missa Papae Marcelli (G. P. da Palestrina); B Minor Mass (J. S. Bach); Messiah (G. F. Handel); The Creation (Joseph Haydn); Symphony no. 9 (Ludwig van Beethoven); St. Paul (Felix Mendelssohn); Ein deutsches Requiem (Johannes Brahms); Messa da Requiem (Giuseppe Verdi); Mass (Igor Stravinsky); and War Requiem (Benjamin Britten). The works are presented in separate chapters, with each chapter divided into three basic sections—history, analysis, and performance practice. Discussions of history include biographical information about composers related to the work at hand, historical perspectives, and text sources. Analyses are focused on formal and musical structures, salient compositional techniques, and elements of music particular to the work being discussed, including parody and motivic organization. The discussion of performance practices includes primary source quotations about a wide range of topics, from performing forces, tempo, and phrasing of each work to specific issues such as tactus, text underlay, musica ficta, metric accentuation, rhythmic alteration, recitative, fermatas, and ornamentation. Musical examples and primary source quotes illuminate the material.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 6 applies the ideas explored in Chapter 5 to a range of early twentieth-century literary texts, especially those by Woolf and Lawrence. The focus here is on crowd and city scenes, including the modernist figures of the flâneur and the passante. The chapter as a whole argues for the relevance of contemporary ideas on molecular physics, especially Brownian motion, to portrayals of individual characters in relation to crowds, drawing on a range of texts including Woolf’s Night and Day and Mrs Dalloway, Lawrence’s The Trespasser and The White Peacock, and texts by Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, and H. G. Wells. Together with Chapter 5, this chapter demonstrates how ideas, language, and imagery were shared across disciplines in the early twentieth century, and argues that considering different disciplines together can help us to recapture a sense of the ways in which particular issues were experienced at the time.

Ferguson, Rex. Identification Practices in Twentieth-Century Fiction. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198865568.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The task of identifying the individual has given rise to a number of technical innovations, including fingerprint analysis and DNA profiling. A range of methods has also been created for storing and classifying people’s identities, such as identity cards and digital records. Identification Practices and Twentieth-Century Fiction tests the hypothesis that these techniques and methods, as practised in the UK and US in the long twentieth century, are inherently related to the literary representation of self-identity from the same period. Until now, the question of ‘who one is’ in the sense of formal identification has remained detached from the question of ‘who one is’ in terms of the representation of unique individuality. Placing these two questions in dialogue allows for a re-evaluation of the various ways in which uniqueness has been constructed during the period and for a reassessment of the historical and literary historical context of such construction. In chapters ranging across the development of fingerprinting, the institution of identity cards during the Second World War, DNA profiling and contemporary digital surveillance, and an analysis of writing by authors including Joseph Conrad, Graham Greene, Elizabeth Bowen, J. G. Ballard, Don DeLillo, and Jennifer Egan, Identification Practices and Twentieth-Century Fiction makes an original contribution to Literary Studies, History, and Cultural Studies.

Abstract:
Societies are constantly changing—and with them people’s needs. Politics has the task of accompanying and steering change. This volume brings together contributions from research on innovation and the welfare state, political parties and associations as well as policy advice, thus providing an overview of current developments in this field. In doing so, it provides an insight into the complexity of policy area analysis in research, transfer and consultancy. At the same time, the volume pays tribute to Josef Schmid, a scholar whose work has linked, advanced and significantly shaped theory and practice, consultancy and teaching in policy analysis and political economy. With contributions by Reinhard Bahnmüller, Nils C. Bandelow, Rasmus C. Boyd Maunsell, Jerome. Portraits from Life. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198789369.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Portraits from Life examines the ways in which a group of major Modernist writers—Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, Henry James, Wyndham Lewis, Gertrude Stein, H. G. Wells, and Edith Wharton—depicted themselves and each other in their memoirs and autobiographies, rather than in their fiction. In a series of reconstructions of biographical contexts, it reveals how each of these novelists approached the task of writing their own lives, and how they experimented with the form and style of autobiography. Memoirs and autobiographies, as this book argues, are often just as artful as novels. Showing how it is impossible to understand any author’s autobiography without an understanding of their life, this book offers a group portrait examining the temptations, difficulties, and benefits which the project of writing their lives brought these novelists. The act of writing autobiography is a central focus, and many recurring themes are analyzed: how autobiography is often a collaborative act; how the time of the writing of autobiography often has a major influence; how fact and fiction, biography and autobiography, interact; how autobiography is always mediated by memory. This book argues that autobiography is as much an act of group portraiture as of self-analysis. It shows how the keeping of biographical secrets acts to protect others rather than oneself; and it explores the ethical issues at stake in autobiography when dealing with real, rather than invented, people. It also opens up a rich network of Modernist encounters, examining how these seven writers’ memoirs interrelate.

Abstract:
This book is a scholarly examination of the comic book character of the new Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, from multiple disciplinary approaches, including religious studies, gender studies, cultural studies, communication, and pedagogy. The essays cover topics from fashion, immigration history, technoculture, and fandom and are intended for a broad range of general and academic readers, from comics fans to comics scholars. The book’s four main sections—“Precursors,” “Nation and Religion, Identity and Community,” “Pedagogy and Resistance,” and “Fangirls, Fanboys, and the Culture of Fandom”—apply specific theoretical and cultural frameworks to their examination of the character. The book closes with a one-page comic by comics scholar and artist Jose Alaniz, as well as an exclusive interview with author G. Willow Wilson by gender studies scholar Shabana Mir. The editors’ wide-ranging expertise, from comics and religious studies to literature, gender, and popular culture, inform and shape this volume suitable for both undergraduate and graduate classrooms, as well as the general reader.

Abstract:
This handbook aims to provide an overview of knowledge about age and ageing in ‘Western’ societies at the beginning of the 21st century, which is intended to be equally suitable for research and practice. It focuses on relevant contributions from the social and behavioural sciences and their access to selected aspects of age and ageing. Its main topics can be described as quintessential core subjects, e.g. theories of ageing, socio-economic situation and inequalities, mental and physical health, social networks and social participation. These are supplemented by contributions on often marginalised topics and ‘emerging topics’ such as very old age, experiences of violence and delinquency, sexuality, and the spirituality and ethics of ageing. Finally, a series of topics relevant to everyday life and research practice (e.g. age and technology and data collection among the elderly) form a third central component of the book.
