Abstract:
Field experiments were conducted over a 3-yr period at three locations to evaluate lactofen at rates of 110 to 220 g ai ha−1applied POST in combination with chlorimuron at 9 g ae ha−1for weed control in soybean. At St. Joseph in 1989 and Baton Rouge in 1990, lactofen at 110, 150, and 170 g ha−1in combination with chlorimuron controlled prickly sida (3 to 5 cm) and entireleaf and pitted morningglory (5 to 13 cm) comparable with the full rate of lactofen at 220 g ha−1plus chlorimuron and the standard treatment of acifluorfen at 280 g ae ha−1plus bentazon at 560 g ae ha−1. Entireleaf morningglory and sicklepod control at Alexandria with lactofen at 110 to 170 g ha−1plus chlorimuron was comparable with that from the full rate of lactofen plus chlorimuron and better than with acifluorfen plus bentazon. Weed control was reduced when soil moisture was deficient at treatment time or when prickly sida height was more than 5 cm and entireleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and sicklepod more than 15 cm. In related studies at St. Joseph, a reduced rate of lactofen (170 g ha−1) in combination with chlorimuron controlled prickly sida 98%, pitted morningglory 93%, and entireleaf morningglory 90% in 1988, which was comparable with the control from the full rate of lactofen plus chlorimuron and with acifluorfen plus bentazon.

Abstract:
In this study, we examined the effects of multiple reference pitch sources on collegiate singers’ accuracy in pitch-matching and intonation tasks. We also investigated which reference pitch source participants preferred and for what reasons. Participants ( N = 99) sang a two-measure excerpt of Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine after listening to the starting pitch of A on a pitch pipe, the piano, a vocal hum, or a tuning fork in two conditions. For one tuning fork condition, participants’ starting pitch was an A, the same pitch as the tuning fork. For the other tuning fork condition, their starting pitch was a G, a different pitch than the tuning fork. We selected two pitches for analysis, each corresponding to the first syllable of the word Joseph. We then analyzed pitch deviation of the two target notes from the reference pitch in each condition. Participants were most accurate in response to the piano and least accurate in response to the tuning fork when their starting pitch was a G. Participants expressed preference for the piano (37.12%) as their pitch source, followed closely by the pitch pipe (33.33%).

Abstract:
Anton Kerner together with his brother Joseph Kerner described five taxa of Gentianella, then classified as species within Gentiana sect. Endotricha. Of these, four were based on material distributed in his seminal Flora exsiccata Austro-Hungarica series. In the following decades a multitude of names was created in this intricate group due to ecotypic polymorphism. We here provide the lectotypes, currently accepted names and synonymies of these five names coined by the Kerner brothers: Gentiana austriaca, G. norica, G. praecox, G. rhaetica and G. sturmiana.

Abstract:
Ree, Carretta, and Teachout (2015) outlined a compelling argument for the pervasiveness of dominant general factors (DGFs) in psychological measurement. We agree that DGFs are important and that they are found for various constructs (e.g., cognitive abilities, work withdrawal), especially when an “unrotated principal components” analysis is conducted (Ree et al., p. 8). When studying hierarchical constructs, however, a narrow emphasis on uncovering DGFs would be incomplete at best and detrimental at worst. This commentary largely echoes the arguments made by Wee, Newman, and Joseph (2014), and Schneider and Newman (2015), who provided reasons for considering second-stratum cognitive abilities. We believe these same arguments in favor of second-stratum factors in the ability domain can be applied to hierarchical constructs more generally.

AbstractLet be the positive part of the quantized enveloping algebra . Using results of Alev–Dumas and Caldero related to the center of , we show that this algebra is free over its center. This is reminiscent of Kostant's separation of variables for the enveloping algebra U(g) of a complex semisimple Lie algebra g, and also of an analogous result of Joseph–Letzter for the quantum algebra Ŭq(g). Of greater importance to its representation theory is the fact that is free over a larger polynomial subalgebra N in n variables. Induction from N to provides infinite-dimensional modules with good properties, including a grading that is inherited by submodules.

Abstract:
The complexes of soil microfungi of Heiss Island (Franz Joseph Land) in natural (upland) coenoses and coenoses affected by anthropogenic pollution were studied. Total 39 microfungi species were identified. Most species belong to ascomycetous anamorphic fungi. Most isolates are represented by species of Acremonium, Cadophora, Cladosporium, Geomyces, Mortierella, Phialophora, Phoma and Thelebolus and attributed not to psychrophilic strains, but to psychrotrophic ones that can grow in a wide range of temperatures. Low number of colony-forming units (from 50 to 1200 CFU per 1 g of soil) and limited species composition are typical of natural coenoses of polar desert. The soil mycobiota structure was changed under the influence of anthropogenic factors.

Abstract:
Joseph Joachim’s role in nineteenth-century English concert life is long celebrated. As yet unexamined, however, is how his performances and reception informed critical debates on sentimentalism. Joachim was a prominent celebrity in the domestic salons of mid-century, for example the Holland Park Circle, where his performances were described as perfect echoes of beautiful interior designs and his status confirmed by G. F. Watts’s famous portrait. This article builds on the relationship between “sublime sentimentality” and “domestic aestheticism” in the writings of John Ruskin, a prominent member of these salons. It explores how Ruskin’s idea of moving from domestic “sites,” through “patterns” to “states” in which the heartfelt is expressed in coded, synecdochal or allusive evocation, even in abstract design, can offer insight into the sentimental dimensions of Joachim’s salon performances. Crucially, Ruskin considered both domesticity and sentimentalism as designs and expressions of feeling which are capable of expansion into large forms and contexts, of moving from the intimate to the public. The second part of this article explores sentimentalism in works composed for the concert hall, provoking critical debate at the turn of the century. Tovey’s Victorian tastes were strongly influenced by both Joachim and Ruskin, but Tovey’s assessments of Joachim as the violinist reached the end of his career exemplify the wide critical turn against mid-century sentimentalism. In 1902 Tovey praised Joachim for making no concession to public sentimentalism, in particular through demonstrating a “Classical” grasp of form, by contrast with those who seek sentimental effect through slowing down the performance of “beautiful” passages. In a late echo of Ruskin, Tovey desired that one must be susceptible to the beauty of “design.” The article ends by comparing Sargent’s late portrait of Joachim, presented at the Jubilee celebrations of 1904, with that of Watts.
