Abstract:
Cette thèse se propose d’observer le philosophe socialiste P.-J. Proudhon et son œuvre d’un point de vue littéraire. Il s’agit d’examiner comment s’est imposé son personnage d’auteur et quels furent ses rapports avec le monde des lettres. Proudhon fut un auteur qui avait des idées bien arrêtées sur les œuvres et leurs créateurs et a théorisé des principes censés s’appliquer aux arts et aux lettres. Il a notamment exprimé des opinions tranchées sur des courants tels que le romantisme et sur des idéaux tels que « l’art pour l’art » qui passionnaient le monde des arts de son époque. La littérarité de l’œuvre de cet auteur se ressent par ailleurs jusque dans l’expression de sa prose philosophique. Il use de procédés stylistiques qui manifestent syntaxiquement la conception qui est la sienne de la société humaine et de l’univers. Son œuvre en vient à se présenter à ses lecteurs comme une saga dont les héros ne seraient pas des personnages mais des idées personnifiées. Cette œuvre se caractérise par le travail que son auteur a consacré à sa rédaction et par l’attention particulière qu’il a portée au style de ses phrases. Elle se caractérise également par le fait qu’elle semble vivre aux yeux de son lecteur tant celui -ci est sollicité par un auteur dont la personnalité d’auteur s’impose dans les lignes qu’il écrit. Ce philosophe ne dédaigne pas d’abuser de lyrisme au point, avec un certain romantisme, de se présenter en prophète et martyr disposé au sacrifice de sa vie pour donner la parole au peuple
This thesis proposes to observe the socialist philosopher P.-J. Proudhon and his work from a literary point of view. It is a question of examining how his character as an author imposed himself and what his relationship with the world of letters was. Proudhon was an author who had strong ideas about works and their creators and theorized principles that were supposed to apply to the arts and letters. In particular, he expressed strong opinions on trends such as romanticism and ideals such as "art for art" that fascinated the art world of his time. The literal nature of this author's work can also be felt in the expression of his philosophical prose. He uses stylistic processes that syntactically manifest his own conception of human society and the universe. His work comes to present itself to his readers as a saga whose heroes are not characters but personified ideas. This writer's work is characterized by the work that his author devoted to its writing and by the particular attention he paid to the style of his sentences. This work is also characterized by the fact that it seems to live in the eyes of its reader so much that he is solicited by an author whose personality as an author imposes itself in the lines he writes. This philosopher does not disdain to abuse lyricism to the point, with a certain romanticism, of presenting himself as a prophet and martyr willing to sacrifice his life to give the people a voice

Abstract:
Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) is usually remembered for his experiments in natural philosophy and celebrated for his isolation of the gas we now call oxygen. However, Priestley had a wide range of interests and published extensively on education, history, politics, political philosophy, language, theology and religion. He dedicated his life to elucidating a coherent set of epistemological, metaphysical and theological principles which he believed explained the human mind, the natural world and the nature of God and revelation. Recent studies of Priestley have emphasised the difficulties that arise from isolating the various aspects of his thought and the fruitful outcome of uncovering the many connections between his diverse areas of study. With this in mind, the present dissertation aims to elucidate the relationship between two aspects of Priestley's thought that have not previously been studied together. It examines his theory of language and argument alongside his work on theology and the evidences of revelation. Chapter One provides an overview of Priestley's epistemology, focusing on his work on induction, judgment and assent. Chapter Two looks at Priestley's analysis of the role of the passions in our assent to propositions and the progressive generation of the personality, while paying particular attention to the origins of figurative language. Chapter Three examines Priestley's theory of language development including the relationship between figurative language and the extension of vocabulary and the close connection between language and culture. Chapter Four demonstrates that Priestley's discussion of the evidences of revealed religion is structured around his theory of assent and judgment. It also explains how assent to revelation is essential for the generation and transcendence of the ‘self'. Chapter Five brings all the themes of the dissertation together in a discussion of Priestley's rational theology and examines his analysis of figurative language in scripture.

Josef P. Mautner charakterisiert zunächst einige ausgewählte Problemfelder in der ästhetischen Wahrnehmung von Krieg und Frieden, die von grundlegenden Ambivalenzen und Widersprüchen geprägt ist. In einem zweiten Schritt problematisiert er die Verzerrungen der Objektwahrnehmung in Kriegs- und Gewaltsituationen, die teilweise strategisch gewollt, teilweise strukturbedingt sind. Über diese Zerrformen der Objektwahrnehmung hinaus diskutiert der Beitrag in einem dritten Schritt lineare, distinktionsfeindliche Erzählungen in den Wahrheitsdiskursen rund um Krieg und Frieden. Abschließend werden Möglichkeiten einer schrittweisen Annäherung an eine Ästhetik des Friedens vorgestellt.

This chapter focuses on Parley Pratt, who was an early follower of Joseph Smith and quickly rose to a position of prominence in the church's leadership. It details how Pratt sold his land and many of his possessions to perform the work of an itinerant preacher, which lead him to discover the Book of Mormon and eventually be united with Joseph Smith and his followers. It also mentions Pratt's autobiography, which he started writing in 1854, by which time he had moved with the Latter-day Saints to Utah Territory. The chapter includes an excerpt from Pratt's autobiography, which implies that his discovery of the Book of Mormon was the most pivotal moment in his life. Abstract:
The grinding processes of shaping materials are one of the oldest known. However, the first grinding machine tool did not appear until the beginning of the 19th century. Industries as important as the automobile would not have been possible without its invention. One of the machine tools that made this development possible was the universal grinding machine patented by Joseph R. Brown in 1877. Unfortunately, none of these early machine tools have been preserved and only the patent remains. Therefore, in this work, a virtual model of this first universal grinding machine has been developed by applying reverse engineering techniques. For this purpose, the existing data in the patent and in some machine treatises of that time have been used. Based on this information, the functionality of each of its components have been interpreted and analyzed. Starting from a set of hypotheses, a scaled and parameterized functional 3D model has been developed. Additionally, a kinematic study of the grinding wheel drive system has been carried out. Hence, this digital model ensures the durability of an important piece of the universal industrial heritage. Furthermore, it can be used as a teaching tool for engineering students, showing the operation of a machine tool belonging to a historical context different from the current one, which does not differ substantially in its architecture of modern universal grinding machines.

<p>Waiho – (verb) (-ngia,-tia) <i>to let be, leave alone, put, place, ignore.</i></p><p>SH6 Waiho Bailey Bridge is located just south of Franz Josef township in the South Island of New Zealand and is a critical connection for the West Coast. The Bailey bridge was first constructed in 1990 and has since been raised and extended three times due to significant aggradation of the riverbed. During a massive storm event on March 26, 2019 the northern abutment and northern- most pier were washed out leading to collapse of several spans of the bridge. The cost caused by the loss of the bridge was estimated to be in the order of $2-3M per day. Consequently, there was intense pressure on Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to restore access across the river.</p><p>As Team Leader and Deputy Team Leader of the West Coast Bridge Management Contract, Jeremy Waldin and Ben Baty led the $6.5M emergency recovery managing an emergency response team which worked across multiple organisations to recover this 170m long bridge in just 18 days.</p>

When the documentary bases are photographs it is possible to carefully model the recorded elements using photogrammetry techniques based on 3D primitives, so that by means of an immersive navigation limited to certain points of view, an appearance of acceptable tridimensionality is obtained, where only isolated images of dispersed frames are available. The virtual recreation can be completed increasing its realistic appearance through its edition with animations of objects (for example, carriages) and characters, texts, musical setting, etc. The results can be presented in formats such as video or navigation through virtual reality helmets. From a selection of the first historical photographs of the Plaza de la Virgen, that we have obtained searching in several documentary sources, our multidisciplinary team is interested in a reliable, realistic and pleasant presentation of the urban environment of one of the most representative places in the city of Valencia, whose spatial configuration has changed significantly over the years. Abstract:
At their most basic level taxes carry, in the words of Schumpeter ([1918] 1991), “the thunder of history” (p. 101). They say something about the ever-changing structures of social, economic, and political life. Taxes offer a blueprint, in both symbolic and concrete terms, for uncovering the most fundamental arrangements in society – stratification included. The historical retellings captured within these data highlight the politics of taxation in Alabama from 1856 to 1901, including conflicts over whom money is expended upon as well as struggles over who carries their fair share of the tax burden. The selected timeline overlaps with the formation of five of six constitutions adopted in the State of Alabama, including 1861, 1865, 1868, 1875, and 1901. Having these years as the focal point makes for an especially meaningful case study, given how much these constitutional formations made the state a site for much political debate. These data contain 5,121 pages of periodicals from newspapers throughout the state, including: Alabama Sentinel, Alabama State Intelligencer, Alabama State Journal, Athens Herald, Daily Alabama Journal, Daily Confederation, Elyton Herald, Mobile Daily Tribune, Mobile Tribune, Mobile Weekly Tribune, Morning Herald, Nationalist, New Era, Observer, Tuscaloosa Observer, Tuskegee News, Universalist Herald, and Wilcox News and Pacificator. The contemporary relevance of these historical debates manifests in Alabama’s current constitution which was adopted in 1901. This constitution departs from well-established conventions of treating the document as a legal framework that specifies a general role of governance but is firm enough to protect the civil rights and liberties of the population. Instead, it stands more as a legislative document, or procedural straightjacket, that preempts through statutory material what regulatory action is possible by the state. These barriers included a refusal to establish a state board of education and enact a tax structure for local education in addition to debt and tax limitations that constrained government capacity more broadly. Prohibitive features like these are among the reasons that, by 2020, the 1901 Constitution has been amended nearly 1,000 times since its adoption. However, similar procedural barriers have been duplicated across the U.S. since (e.g., California’s Proposition 13 of 1978). Reference: Schumpeter, Joseph.
