Abstract:
Societies are constantly changing—and with them people’s needs. Politics has the task of accompanying and steering change. This volume brings together contributions from research on innovation and the welfare state, political parties and associations as well as policy advice, thus providing an overview of current developments in this field. In doing so, it provides an insight into the complexity of policy area analysis in research, transfer and consultancy. At the same time, the volume pays tribute to Josef Schmid, a scholar whose work has linked, advanced and significantly shaped theory and practice, consultancy and teaching in policy analysis and political economy. With contributions by Reinhard Bahnmüller, Nils C. Bandelow, Rasmus C. Beck, Susanne Blancke, Mathias Bucksteeg, Daniel Buhr, Roland Czada, Christoph Deutschmann, Charlotte Fechter, Rolf Frankenberger, Stewart Gold, Anke Hassel, Rolf G. Abstract:
This handbook aims to provide an overview of knowledge about age and ageing in ‘Western’ societies at the beginning of the 21st century, which is intended to be equally suitable for research and practice. It focuses on relevant contributions from the social and behavioural sciences and their access to selected aspects of age and ageing. Its main topics can be described as quintessential core subjects, e.g. theories of ageing, socio-economic situation and inequalities, mental and physical health, social networks and social participation. These are supplemented by contributions on often marginalised topics and ‘emerging topics’ such as very old age, experiences of violence and delinquency, sexuality, and the spirituality and ethics of ageing. Finally, a series of topics relevant to everyday life and research practice (e.g. age and technology and data collection among the elderly) form a third central component of the book. Abstract:
Pension policies are a major topic of political debate, whose discussions concentrate on both the instruments and general objectives of the system of pension provision. This volume includes research on different problems and reform alternatives in this respect, focusing especially on state pensions. Its chapters deal—among other issues—with the role of basic pension schemes within the state pension system, the link between work and income in old age, the treatment of care work in pension systems and the development of pensions in times of demographic change. Three chapters add a comparative perspective. The authors are researchers at public or non-profit universities and research institutes. With contributions by Gerhard Bäcker, Florian Blank, Martin Brussig, Judith Czepek, Susanne Drescher, Johannes Geyer, Arthur Kaboth, Ute Klammer, Tim Köhler-Rama, Patricia Frericks, Jutta Schmitz-Kießler, Camille Logeay, Anita Tiefensee, Erik Türk, Tobias Wiß, Josef Wöss and Rudolf Zwiener.

Abstract:
Industry 4.0 and digitalisation are current developments that are having a strong impact on the world of work and our society. However, their consequences are still relatively unclear. A look at four economically strong European countries (Germany, Italy, Sweden and Spain) shows that technological and economic developments as well as expectations are debated differently. This book is separated into four sections. Its first part provides an overview of the scope and effects of digitalisation. Its second and third parts focus on reports and results from the four countries mentioned above. These are based on expert discussions and a Delphi online survey conducted in three waves which asked questions on and developed future scenarios. The book’s final part deals with possible courses of action at the workplace and in politics. The articles this book contains are written in German or English and are complemented with summaries in German, English, Italian and Spanish. Abstract:
The series ‘Health Research. Interdisciplinary Perspectives’ is published annually and focuses on topics relating to all aspects of health. Our aim is to take interdisciplinarity as an aspiration seriously and provide the latest findings on current issues from different disciplinary perspectives. This volume addresses the highly topical subject of the environment and health, considering the general relationship between humans and the environment as well as their specific interdependence and the consequences they have on each other. From the history of environmental medicine to the statutory framework or practical (supra-) regional phenomena that could have an effect on human health, this book takes into account a broad variety of aspects and disciplinary viewpoints. Abstract:
