Full text
Abstract:
The compositional technique of cross partitioning is one of Luigi Dallapiccola's most used twelve-tone devices. Through a detailed analysis of three contrapuntal canonic movements from Dallapiccola's Quaderno Musicale di Annalibera, I examine his use of cross partitioning as a motivic tool and as a referential collection. The development of the BACH motive and the derivation of tone-row statements reflects on Dallapiccola's extensive use of cross partitioning and his compositional principles used to achieve a sense of polarity. Upon a preliminary analysis based on set-theory analysis set out by Joseph Straus I draw an interpretive analysis through Alegant's cross partitioning model as well as develop my own set of parameters for interpretation in regards to polarity which is based on intervallic stability.

Full text
Abstract:
Composer Isang Yun developed an idiosyncratic musical language that blends Eastern-Asian and Western-European art traditions. Exiled from Korea due to political conflict, he continued his compositional career in Germany, where his music is renowned for its use of the Hauptton (“main-tone”) technique. Yun was the first to discuss this technique, which he interprets as a process rooted in East-Asian musical traditions, including Taoism philosophy. His music is remarkable in that it fuses this process within the context of Western formal structures. I combine Straus’s associational model with Yun’s Hauptton theory to analyse the second movement of Duo für Violoncello und Harfe (1984) in order to show the inclusion of Eastern-Asian and Western-European musical elements in Yun’s music. I begin by analysing several Haupttöne at the surface level through associational relationships, followed by a large-scale analysis of the entire movement with one fundamental Hauptton.

Beus, Annalyn. "Translation and Transcription of a Passage from the Baduem Manuscript: An Eighteenth-Century Portuguese Embassy to China." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4016.

Full text
Abstract:
This project is a diplomatic transcription and English translation of a passage from an 18-century manuscript that chronicles a remarkable Portuguese embassy to China (Macau). The embassy embarked from Lisbon in February 1752, sailing in a luxuriously outfitted ship (Nossa Senhora da Conceição e Lusitânia Grande), in convoy with a warship (Nossa Senhora das Brotas). The English translation is important because it makes the account accessible to scholars who lack familiarity with Portuguese. This voyage to China is remarkable in light of the long history of maritime loss by the Portuguese. Although the normal projected loss of life on this route was 20%, this journey was made without one death. Some of the most fascinating aspects of the journey include the following: a) how the intrepid crew of the Nossa Senhora (most of whom were novices) and the passengers dealt with bad weather at sea; b) the religious rites conducted during the voyage by Jesuit priests en route to the Far East missions, which the passengers firmly believed mitigated the dangers and were thus responsible for their safe journey; c) the intriguing political maneuvering between the Portuguese and Chinese in Macau; and d) the meticulous descriptions of the different cultures, peoples and places encountered on the journey.

Abstract:
Franz Josef Strauss was a German politician (CSU) and long-time ministerpresident of the state of Bavaria. Born in Munich as the second child of a butcher, Strauss studied German letters, history and economics at the University of Munich from 1935 to 1939. In World War II, he served in the German Wehrmacht on the Western and Eastern Fronts. While on furlough, he passed the German state exams to become a teacher. After suffering from severe frostbite on the Eastern Front at the end of 1942, he served as an Offizier für wehrgeistige Führung (political officer) at the antiaircraft artillery school in Altenstadt, near Schongau. He held the rank of Oberleutnant at the end of the war. After the war, he was appointed deputy Landrat (county president) of Schongau by the American occupiers and was involved in founding the local party organization of the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU). He became a member of the first Bundestag (Federal Parliament) in 1949 and, in 1953, Federal Minister for Special Affairs in the second cabinet of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, in 1955 Federal Minister of Nuclear Energy, and in 1956 defence minister, charged with the build-up of the new Bundeswehr the youngest man to hold this office at the time. He became chairman of the CSU in 1961. Strauss was forced to step down as defence...

Abstract:
The porous composite system is consists of porous medium and free fluid layer, which has extensive industrial applications. The study method for the flow field in the porous composite system includes the microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic approaches. When the two-domain approach is adopted, which is one of the macroscopic methods, the momentum transport boundary conditions at the interface between porous medium and free fluid layer is essential to analyze the flow field in the system. When Darcy equation is adopted to describe the flow in porous region, the Beavers-Joseph (BJ) interface condition can be used. When Darcy-Brinkman equation is adopted to describe the flow in porous region, the stress-jump (Ochoa-Tapia & Whitaker: OTW) interface condition can be used. To utilize these interface conditions, the velocity slip coefficient used in the BJ interface condition and the stress-jump coefficient used in the OTW interface condition should be specified. In this paper, a brush configuration is approximately treated as the equivalent porous media in the composite system. A numerical simulation method is used to obtain the microscopic solution for the flow in the system based on the Navier-Stokes equation applied in whole system, and an analytical method is used to obtain the corresponding macroscopic solution based on the two-domain approach. By comparing the microscopic and macroscopic solutions, the velocity slip coefficient and the stress-jump coefficient are determined since they can be treated as adjustable parameters. The influence of different flow types, including Poiseuille flow, Couette flow, and free boundary flow, are investigated. Also the impact of free fluid layer thickness and porous structure on the velocity slip coefficient and the stress-jump coefficient are discussed. The results indicate that, the velocity slip coefficient and the stress-jump coefficient are not only the parameters which depend on the porous structure, but also depend on the thickness of free fluid layer and flow type. When the thickness of free fluid layer is lower than a certain value, the impact of free fluid layer thickness on the velocity slip coefficient and the stress-jump coefficient is much obvious. In addition, when the thickness of free fluid layer is small, these coefficients are found to be dependent on the flow type. However, when the thickness of free fluid layer is large, the stress jump coefficient is independent of the thickness of free fluid layer and the flow type. Thus the stress jump coefficient obtained for a specific case can be used to predict velocity for different flow types and different thickness of free fluid layers.

Full text
Abstract:
In response to a solicitation for Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of flow in a T-junction from the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD/NEA) [1], Structural Integrity (SI) Associates of San Jose, CA, USA has completed a simulation using the commercially available CFD code ANSYS-CFX. The simulation was carried out for geometry and flow conditions matching an experiment underway at Vattenfall Research and Development in Sweden where two streams of differing temperature mix in a T-junction. The benchmark was to be a blind test of CFD simulations. Experimental results were not released until after benchmark participants submitted the results of their simulation to the OECD/NEA. The CFD simulation done by SI was carried out on an all hexahedral mesh of 1,881,504 elements generated using the ANSYS Mechanical Finite Element program. The mesh was then transferred into the CFX program and, after applying proper boundary conditions, a time-dependent simulation was done using the Large Scale Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model [2] with Wall Adjusting Local Eddy Viscosity (WALE) sub-grid scale (SGS) turbulence model [2, 3]. Comparisons of the CFD results to the Vattenfall data show close correspondence for mean and root-mean-square (rms) turbulent temperature fluctuations.
