Abstract:

Abstract:
The distinction between syntagmatic compounds of the type N Prep N, such as Fr. jouet d’enfant, and nominal syntagms of the type N Prep N, such as the partially equivalent Fr. jouet pour enfants, remains unclear and vague. This is mainly because the lexical and syntactic status of syntagmatic compounds still is controversial. In some cases, as in jouet d’enfant and jouet pour enfants, partial equivalent syntagmatic compounds and nominal syntagms may coexist and underlie a specific variation and alternation. In other cases, such as Pt. bracelete de aço and bracelete em aço, two variants of a syntagmatic compound may alternate and coexist. The first part of this paper provides an overview of the current discussion on these two types of constructions. The second part addresses the alternation and variation of syntagmatic compounds and nominal syntagms by means of analysis of large-scale corpus data, the French, Spanish and Portuguese corpus of the TenTen family. Here, the focus lies on the variation of the prepositional internal element of these constructions as well as on a comparison of different word formation patterns.

Two, simple, strain plasticity experiments that yield Joule's constant (J = 778 (ft lbf)/Btu) are described in this paper. One experiment uses lead-smashing and the other copper cold-working. In both experiments the lead or copper specimens have an attached thermocouple and perform as calorimeters. The equipment is easily constructed at minimal expense and may be used as laboratory experiments. The experimental results gave an average, absolute deviation from Joule's constant of 4.2% for the lead-smashing experiment and 11.8% for the copper cold-working experiment.

Abstract:
La Noble Science des Joueurs d’Espée (originally La Noble Science des Ioueurs Despee) is a fight book printed in 1538 by Willem Vorsterman, a local printer in Antwerp. Printed in several exemplars, the book is the French translation of a German fencing treatise written by Andre Paurnfeindt, which itself was first published in Vienna in 1516. The study of Vorsterman’s edition shows several errors were made in recreating Paurnfeindt’s work, including inversions of image and text, which have the potential to alter the transmission of the text’s martial knowledge. This raises the question of Vorsterman's commercial intentions when editing and printing this fight book, especially regarding the flourishing printing business in sixteenth-century Flanders. This paper aims to describe the differences in construction between Vorsterman and Pauernfeindt’s treatises in the context of both printing and martial cultures in Antwerp and the surrounding region.

Abstract:
Recent advances in the development of large eddy simulation (LES) atmospheric models with corresponding atmospheric transport and dispersion (AT&D) modeling capabilities have made it possible to simulate short, time-averaged, single realizations of pollutant dispersion at the spatial and temporal resolution necessary for common atmospheric dispersion needs, such as designing air sampling networks, assessing pollutant sensor system performance, and characterizing the impact of airborne materials on human health. The high computational burden required to form an ensemble of single-realization dispersion solutions using an LES and coupled AT&D model has, until recently, limited its use to a few proof-of-concept studies. An example of an LES model that can meet the temporal and spatial resolution and computational requirements of these applications is the joint outdoor-indoor urban large eddy simulation (JOULES). A key enabling element within JOULES is the computationally efficient graphics processing unit (GPU)-based LES, which is on the order of 150 times faster than if the LES contaminant dispersion simulations were executed on a central processing unit (CPU) computing platform. JOULES is capable of resolving the turbulence components at a suitable scale for both open terrain and urban landscapes, e.g., owing to varying environmental conditions and a diverse building topology. In this paper, we describe the JOULES modeling system, prior efforts to validate the accuracy of its meteorological simulations, and current results from an evaluation that uses ensembles of dispersion solutions for unstable, neutral, and stable static stability conditions in an open terrain environment.

Abstract:
AbstractSurvival of Pratylenchus jordanensis Hashim was studied in a field in fallow after the harvest of a crop of alfalfa and in storage under laboratory conditions. The nematodes survived in dry roots/ root residues under field conditions for 100 days. Vertical migration of the nematodes to deeper soil layers was observed when the top soil layer dried up. High numbers of nematodes survived at both 0-15 and 16-30 cm depths for 100 days. Then the field was ploughed under, which caused the soil to dry and the populations to decline. The nematodes survived for 380 days in a fallow field. They survived for 270 and 272 days under laboratory conditions in wet and shade-dried soil, respectively, and for 124 days in natural field soil at 30 degrees C. Significant negative correlation between nematode populations and storage temperature and positive correlation between nematode populations and soil moisture were observed. P. jordanensis did not survive for long in a drop of water on a glass slide, whereas it survived in filter paper discs for varying periods at different relative humidity levels. This paper provides an account of my intellectual journey. Beginning with an un-theorised concern with inequality, this journey has taken me through jousts with statistical models of social systems to theoretical and empirical investigations of primitive accumulation, capitalist dynamics and human–nature interactions. Marx has played an essential role in this intellectual journey, though increasingly his insights have been supplemented by other traditions of social scientific thought, including feminism, physical geography and ecology. For me, as (seemingly) for most on the left, it has proved a frustrating task to reconcile the core insights of Marx about capitalist dynamics with the knowledge provided by these other traditions – a task that remains incomplete.

Abstract:
James Joule played the major role in establishing the conservation of energy, or the first law of thermodynamics, as a universal, all-pervasive principle of physics. He was an experimentalist par excellence and his place in the development of thermodynamics is unarguable. This article discusses Joule's life and scientific work culminating in the 1850 paper, where he presented his detailed measurements of the mechanical equivalent of heat using his famous paddle-wheel apparatus. Joule's long series of experiments in the 1840s leading to his realisation that the conservation of energy was probably of universal validity is discussed in context with the work of other pioneers, notably Sadi Carnot, who effectively formulated the principle of the second law of thermodynamics a quarter of a century before the first law was accepted. The story of Joule's work is a story of an uphill struggle against a critical scientific establishment unwilling to accept the mounting evidence until it was impossible to ignore. His difficulties in attracting funding and publishing in reputable journals despite the quality of his work will resonate with many young scientists and engineers of the present day. This commentary was written to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society .

Abstract:
This paper presents the study of the tensile, compressive, flexural, impact energy and water absorption characteristics of the luffa fiber reinforced expoxy polymer composites. Luffa fiber reinforced epoxy resin matrix composites have been developed by hand lay-up technique with varying process parameters such as fiber condition (treated and untreated), chopped randomly oriented and different volume fraction (30%, 40% and 50%). Tensile strength varies from 9 MPa to 20 MPa, compressive strength varies from 75 MPa to 105 MPa, flexural strength varies from 15 MPa to 140 MPa and impact energy varies from 0.25 Joules to 1.45 Joules, as a function of fiber volume fraction. The optimum mechanical properties were obtained at 40% of fiber volume fraction of treated fiber composites. Fracture surface of the composite shows that pull out and de-bonding of fiber is occurred.

Abstract:
Abstract This article offers a critical reading of Chemin de fer, a play written by Congolese author Julian Mabiala Bissila and directed by Haitian director Miracson Saint-Val as part of the Quatre Chemins Theatre Festival in Haiti in 2017. It discusses the uses and meanings of the absurd in both the text and the performance, showing its links to the theme of violence as this relates to the Congolese Civil War, the immediate context of the play. The article also shows how Haitian director and actor Miracson Saint-Val grounds his performance in Vodou, using the theory of "ethnodrama" developed by the ethno-psychiatrist Louis Mars. This approach enables us to see how the play lends itself to the juxtaposition of several historical realities, and the possible resonances between the Congolese Civil War and Haitian history and contemporary reality. All of this raises an important question which this paper tries to answer: can we speak of a 'theatre of the absurd' in the context of colonialism, one in which the absurd, the tragic and ritual performance are necessarily intertwined?

Abstract:
Purpose When a company simultaneously manages several distribution channels, there are important issues regarding the sharing of marketing and logistical resources. This paper aims to discuss the integration of sales staff, communication and logistical operations to improve service delivery to multi-channel consumers. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a literature review regarding multi-channel strategy to build a conceptual framework. This framework is discussed using three illustrations from the French multi-channel distribution field (King Jouet, Fnac and Darty). Findings The exploratory research underlines the importance of information about how consumers order in different channels. This makes the global management of different channels difficult and threatens marketing and logistical sharing. Practical implications The integration process is becoming increasingly important in service recovery. Companies must therefore facilitate total access to logistical information. This requires an organisational interaction between marketing and the supply chain activities. Originality/value The paper underlines the importance of the integration process in service recovery management, particularly when a defective product must be replaced and a new product be made available to consumers.

Utilization of new renewable energy can be one solution to the limitations of fossil energy. Ocean wave energy is renewable energy caused by tides, and this potential can be utilized as a source of electrical energy in Indonesia, especially East Nusa Tenggara. This ocean wave power plant uses oscillating water column (OWC) technology. This wave energy is energy that can be developed and environmentally friendly and available every time. This paper analyzes the amount of energy produced by ocean waves using OWC technology in the East Nusa Tenggara. The benefits of this paper can be used as a reference for planning the construction of a wave power plant around East Nusa Tenggara. The method used is to measure the condition of ocean waves for a year and analyze the amount of energy and electrical power that can be generated by ocean waves with the use of OWC. The results of the analysis show that the use of ocean wave power plants with OWC technology in the waters of East Nusa Tenggara can produce the highest energy of 20,291,728.83 Joules and the lowest is 17,062.62 Joules. The electrical power generated is between 3,645.45 Watt to 4,274,314.37 Watt, and average of power density by ocean waves using OWC is 19,021.89 Watt/m2.

Abstract:
According to Landauer’s principle, at least kBln2T Joules are needed to erase a bit that stores information in a thermodynamic system at temperature T. However, the arguments for the principle rely on a regime where the equipartition principle holds. This paper, by exploring a simple model of a thermodynamic system using algorithmic information theory, shows the energy cost of transferring a bit, or restoring the original state, is kBln2T Joules for a reversible system. The principle is a direct consequence of the statistics required to allocate energy between stored energy states and thermal states, and applies outside the validity of the equipartition principle. As the thermodynamic entropy of a system coincides with the algorithmic entropy of a typical state specifying the momentum degrees of freedom, it can quantify the thermodynamic requirements in terms of bit flows to maintain a system distant from the equilibrium set of states. The approach offers a simple conceptual understanding of entropy, while avoiding problems with the statistical mechanic’s approach to the second law of thermodynamics. Furthermore, the classical articulation of the principle can be used to derive the low temperature heat capacities, and is consistent with the quantum version of the principle.

Abstract:
The increase in global energy consumption is increasing every year. The increasing need for energy also in fact collides with the human need to create a clean and pollution-free environment. This condition requires us to look for alternative and renewable energy sources to support our daily lives. With the preparation of the General Provincial Energy Plan (GPEP) in the future, it is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of the West Java economy, fulfill basic needs in the energy sector and strengthen the sustainability of West Java development based on the environment and local wisdom. Preparation of the West Java Regional Energy General Plan (REGP). Data processing to predict the level of planning for electrical energy needs in West Java is processed using LEAP (Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System) software. Demand is calculated based on the amount of electrical energy consumption activity and the amount of electrical energy consumption per activity (energy intensity). The year 2019 is the base year for the calculation. The results obtained from the prediction of electrical energy demand in 2019-2030 show a positive trend, namely an increase from 111.7 million Giga Joules to 147.9 million Giga Joules. The energy transformation in the fuel output of each power plant in West Java for the baseline scenario, in 2030 will reach 95.3 million Giga Joules. Meanwhile, energy generation in the Demand Side Management (DSM) scenario in 2019 is 6 (Thousand MW), with a capacity of 3,600 MW. Then there is an increase every year, until in 2030 it will reach 26.6 (Thousand MW), with a capacity of 5,800 MW. From this paper, the procedures and data results from calculations using the LEAP tool are expected to provide an overview and input for readers in making policy in the energy sector in particular and regional development planning in general.

Abstract:
This paper examines the syntactic, intonational and information structural properties of discontinuous nominal constructions in Cantonese. Four different syntactic constructions are identified which are used to indicate different information status of elements in a noun phrase, all involving two full NPs with either overt or covert heads. Discourse particles play a crucial role, not only for the interpretation of information structure, but also as anchoring points for boundary tones. Otherwise, intonation and prosody are not affected by word order changes, with the exception of optional pauses after or before dislocated constituents.

Abstract:
The outflow of heat from the Earth's interior is, energy-wise, the most impressive terrestrial phenomenon. Its rate of about 1021 joules per year is order of magnitudes greater than the heat loss from volcanic eruptions or energy dissipation of earthquakes. The study of the Earth's internal heat plays an important role in understanding the Earth's origin, its evolution, internal constitution, and plate tectonics. The paper briefly recalls the early days of geothermal understanding of our planet, lists the principal milestones of heat flow studies and reviews the major achievements of the international cooperation under the activities of the International Heat Flow Commission of the IASPEI.

The method for the temperature measurement on the surface of three copper conductors, with cross-sections of 4 mm2 , 6 mm2 i 10 mm2 , are presented in this paper. After the determination of temperature probe, the series of temperature measurements are performed on chosen wire conductors. The first two series are performed applying DC generator, in two different cases: when, during the measurement the voltage on the conductor’s end was held constant and the current inside the conductor was held constant. After that, the temperature measurements on the conductor’s surface were performed supplying conductors with AC, time harmonic currents, again in two particular cases: constant RMS voltage value on the conductor’s ends and constant RMS value of current inside the conductor. The measuring results were expected for all four cases and for all thee conductors. Due to presence of skin effect, the Joule’s losses were higher in the AC cases, meaning that the temperature increase was faster and that the final reached temperature, for the same values of voltage or currents, was higher. It was also demonstrated that the higher Joule’s losses appeared when the current was kept constant during the measurements, in both DC and AC supplying. The measurements were performed with the instrument which enabled the results recording on USB stick; hence the measurements duration was 30 minutes, recording result every two seconds. The measuring results were presented graphically, together with graphical presentation of the comparison between methods and the results for all investigated conductors.

What Jules Verne charts in his Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours isn't just the itinerary that his famous character Phileas Fogg traverses in his quest to travel around the world in eighty days. Instead, what we witness are the workings of a colonial-capitalist discourse that reduces the entire planet to an easily exchangeable commodity. This paper analyses how Fogg's journey resituates indigenous landscapes according to a colonial grammar. Vernien geography authorises only those fictional spatial and temporal paradigms that are consistent with the colonial project of capitalistic expansion.

Electric motorcycles and scooters are alternates for the existing Internal combustion engine which eliminates emissions and greenhouse gases. The frame is a critical part of any vehicle bolsters an objective in its construction and protection for integrated parts within the vehicle. The weight of the frame contributes to 40% of the total curb weight of the vehicle. Hence, the main objective of this paper is to design, analyze and validate an electric bike frame to decrease the weight and replace the existing conventional material which will also lead to an increase in efficiency of an E-bike. Glass Fibre with Epoxy resin is reinforced individually with Eggshell and sugarcane as these materials are quite economical and easily accessible. A three-dimensional model of a Naked sports bike frame is made using Catia V5 software. Structural analysis is performed for static boundary conditions using Ansys 18.2 software. Based on the analysis results, GFRP and GFRP with Eggshell has less deformation and strain other than steel. GFRP and GFRP with Eggshell are fabricated and experimented for Tensile, flexural strength, and impact test. On the outcome of results, GFRP has better Tensile strength of 288 N/mm2, flexural strength of 15 N/mm2, and Impact energy of 12 joules whereas GFRP with Eggshell has a Tensile strength of 139 N/mm2, flexural strength of 6 N/mm2 and Impact energy of 4 joules. Theoretical simulation and experimental results suggest for alternate replacement of steel which reduces the weight of the frame by 45% for the modelled structure.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the influence of both viscous and joules dissipation on the problem of magnetohydrodynamic flow past a stretching porous surface embedded in a porous medium. Analytic solutions of the resulting nonlinear non-homogeneous boundary value problem in the case when the plate stretches with a velocity varying linearly with distance, expressed in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions, are presented for the case of prescribed surface temperature. Numerical calculations have been carried out for various values of suction parameter, magnetic field, Prandtl number, Eckert number and Schmidt number. The results show that increases in magnetic parameter decrease both the dimensionless transverse velocity, longitudinal velocity and also the skin friction coefficient. Also, formation of thin boundary layer is observed for higher value of magnetic parameter.

Abstract:
The paper describes the core heating of ACSR (aluminum conductor steel—reinforced) conductor in stable operation under different environmental conditions. The calculations are greatly simplified in a steady state—we can calculate on a balance of power instead of a balance of energies. At a known surface, the temperature of the conductor due to solar radiation, natural convection, and joules heating as well as the temperature of the steel core were calculated, which is relevant for the tensile strength of the rope. Measurements of the surface of the conductor and the core rejected a simple model of heat transfer—it is also necessary to take into account empty air spaces between the wires of a rope. On the basis of measurements, a new model has given satisfactory compliance with the measured values.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this paper, we are presenting the microwave emission results of a vircator that emits its radiation lying well-within the microwave range of electromagnetic spectrum viz 4–8 GHz and the energy needed per shot is as low as 25 Joules only. In this reported experiment, the pulse forming line is charged to a voltage of 160 kV and the measured diode voltage is 50 kV in the experiment. The primary energy is nearly 50 Joules only and hence the energy efficiency of the high voltage pulse transformer and pulse forming line combination for the given experiment is nearly 50%. The experiment is the first of its kind in establishing (experimentally) the low voltage operation of a conventional vircator, which has a planar cylindrical cathode and stainless steel mesh anode, for the microwave emission purpose. Moreover, because of the low voltage and low energy operation we could operate the whole system in repetitive mode and we could achieve as high as 4 Hz operation with this device. Interestingly, the current density of the velvet cathode used in the present experiment is nearly 300 A/cm2 in the present reported set of experiments. One interesting observation emerging out from the present experiment is that in the low voltage operation of the vircator the beam acceleration potential is relatively low and hence the axial velocities of reflexing electrons (trapped between cathode and virtual cathode) is also limited and far less than 1.8 × 108 m/s and hence with small anode cathode gaps like that of 3 mm, which is the case of present experiments, it becomes feasible to achieve radiation frequency of 4–8 GHz from the vircator.

This article deals with four autobiographical texts by the Belgian writer Françoise Mallet-Joris (1930-2017): Lettre à moi-même (1963), La Maison de papier (1970), J'aurais voulu jouer de l'accordéon (1975) and La double confidence (2000). These texts, despite being inspired by the writer’s life experiences, are far from Philippe Lejeune's autobiographical model because the author, instead of talking about herself, narrates about others. The difficulties of speaking about her own life determines the somewhat unusual character of these texts: they are ambiguous genres that are placed between autobiography, memories, intimate diary, essay, biography and chronicle. In the analysis, I focus the author’s choice of theme (literary work, life of others, biography of Marcelina Debordes-Valmore) and form (hybrid genres, mosaic structure, fragmentarism) which makes this unique "writing about oneself "so original. I also try to find out why the author is unable to write about herself and how that influences the shape of her autobiographical texts.

Abstract:
Contemporary distributions are now going to underground their overhead distribution lines due to techno-social reasons. Reliability and loss reduction are the two prime objectives for distribution system operation. Since failure rates of ungrounded cables are the function of Joules heating besides their physical lengths, the reliability evaluation of undergrounded distribution systems needs to be reviewed. This paper suggested a suitable modification in existing reliability indices in order to make them more appropriate for underground distribution systems. A multi-objective network reconfiguration problem is formulated to enhance the reliability and performance of distribution systems while duly addressing the variability and uncertainty in load demand and power generation from renewables. The application results on a standard test bench shift the paradigm of the well-known conflicting nature of reliability and network performance indices defined for overhead distribution systems.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the Joules heating effects on stagnation point flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids over a stretching cylinder by means of genetic algorithm (GA). The main emphasis is to find the analytical and numerical solutions for the said mathematical model. The work undertaken is a blend of numerical and analytical studies. Effects of active parameters such as: Hartmann number, Prandtl number, Eckert number, Nusselt number, Skin friction and dimensionless fluids parameters on the flow and heat transfer characteristics have been examined by graphs and tables. Compression is also made with the existing benchmark results. Design/methodology/approach – Analytical solutions of non-linear coupled equations are developed by optimal homotopy analysis method (OHAM). A very effective and higher order numerical scheme hybrid GA and Nelder-Mead optimization Algorithms are used for numerical investigations. Findings – An excellent agreement with the existing results in limiting sense is noted. It is observed that the radial velocity is an increasing function of dimensionless material parameters α 1, α 2 and β. Temperature increases by increasing the values of M, Pr, Ec and γ. Non-Newtonian parameter β has similar effects on skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number. The wall heat transfer rate is a decreasing function of A and ß whereas it increases by increasing conjugate parameter γ. Originality/value – The problem under consideration has been widely studied by many investigators due to its importance and engineering applications. But most of the studies as the authors have documented are for Newtonian or viscous fluids. But no such analysis is available in the literature which can describe the Joules heating effects on stagnation point flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids over a stretching cylinder by means of GA.

Abstract:
This paper is focused on the joust between English squire John Chalons and French écuyer Louis de Bueil, that was held in 1446 in Tours, France, in the King Charles VII of France and his courtiers presence. The mounted combatants fought with full armour on using couched lances. The article also covers the connection issue of this chivalric encounters type with warfare and military practices of that time, their effectiveness in then military training and interpretations of 15th century tournaments and pas d’armes in the 20th -early 21 century historiography. Available existing sources for this event suggest that the fighters with premeditation used lethal combat techniques during the collision, that resulted in Louis de Bueil death. However, Jean de Bueil, the older brother of the deceased, soldier, courtier and writer, expresses his highly hostile attitude towards chivalric practices of this kind in his autobiographical work "Le Jouvencel", which in the long run led to a false interpretation of the Late Middle Ages pas d’armes as an escapist and anachronic manifestation of the Late Middle Ages elites culture, spread by renowned Dutch scholar Johann Huizinga and his epigones. The article has its emphasis on participants’ arms and armour, as well as their impact on the course and result of a joust. The paper presents the analysis of the narrative program of eight mid. 15th century colored handwritten miniatures, conveing the stages and course of the duel. Visual narration is created with profound knowledge of the knight weapon and equipment features, as well as an accurate understanding of the equestrian encounters course and logic. Depicted by unknown artist plate armor on the combating fighters has direct historical analogies among the preserved survived artifacts of knights weapons. This miniatures series may be considered as a ‘documentary military art’ prominent example for its time.

Active infrared thermography is an attractive and highly reliable technique used for the non-destructive evaluation of test objects. In this paper, defect detection on the subsurface of the STS304 metal specimen was performed by applying the line-scanning method to induction thermography. In general, the infrared camera and the specimen are fixed in induction thermography, but the line-scanning method can excite a uniform heat source because relative movement occurs. After that, the local heating area due to Joule’s heating effect was removed, and filtering was applied for the 1st de-noising. Threshold-value-based binarization processing using the Otsu algorithm was performed for clear defect object recognition. After performing the 2nd de-noising, automatic defect recognition was performed using a boundary tracking algorithm. As a result, the conditions due to the parameters of the scanning line for the thermal image were determined.

Abstract:
The turbine blades utilized in this investigation were made of alloy steel type 52, the same steel used in electric power plants. The current research aims to study the effect of corrosion fatigue behavior on turbine blades when cyclic loads and corrosion work together to degrade a material's mechanical properties. As a result, many engineering structures and components experience early failure. Laser cladding is a method of laser surfacing to improve or rejuvenate the surface of an object. This parameter was used in the cladding process. 132 watts of laser power, with a peak output of 1.83 kilowatts, was used to generate the pulses, with each pulse containing 11 joules of energy. The results reveal that the specimen's microstructure is smoother following the laser cladding procedure and that the corrosion fatigue resistance in the air (without solution) is increased. This paper will look at how laser cladding impacts turbine blades.

FML patches were made of thin layers of glass/epoxy composites of 0.2 mm thickness with phosphor bronze sheets of 0.2 mm thickness. The patching was single side. The composite and FML patching was more effective in repairing the specimens with greater crack length. Placing 3 GRP and 5 GRP patches increased the absorbed energy by only 3 to 4 joules respectively as compared to unrepaired plate. The use of 2/1 and 3/2 FML patches could increase the absorbed energy two to four times depend on crack length.

This paper presents the results of a collaborative project, the objective of which was to investigate the potential offered by combining ultrasonic Lamb wave interrogation of composite material structures, insonifying the whole structure, with a single wavefront integrating optical fibre detector. The system, which was designed primarily for condition monitoring rather than defect imaging, proved to be capable of detecting small (centimetre square) delaminations, millimetre-sized holes and impact damages of a few joules, all with insonification wavelengths of the order of 2 cm. Data extraction proved to be extremely important since the damage-detection process relies essentially on analysing scattering signatures rather than attempting to image defects and damage. The system—dubbed SISCO (Structurally Integrated Systems for comprehensive evaluation of COmposites)—indicates that self-monitoring structures can be efficiently designed using controlled insonification and a relatively sparse sensor array, presenting a contrast to the more conventional imaging approach involving far more complex sensing arrays and detection and signal processing algorithms.

Abstract:
We conclude our analysis of the linear response of charge transport in lattice systems of free fermions subjected to a random potential by deriving general mathematical properties of its conductivity at the macroscopic scale. The present paper belongs to a succession of studies on Ohm and Joule's laws from a thermodynamic viewpoint starting with [1-3]. We show, in particular, the existence and finiteness of the conductivity measure μΣ for macroscopic scales. Then we prove that, similar to the conductivity measure associated to Drude's model, μΣ converges in the weak*-topology to the trivial measure in the case of perfect insulators (strong disorder, complete localization), whereas in the limit of perfect conductors (absence of disorder) it converges to an atomic measure concentrated at frequency ν = 0. However, the AC-conductivity μΣ|ℝ\{0} does not vanish in general: We show that μΣ(ℝ\{0}) > 0, at least for large temperatures and a certain regime of small disorder.

Wide concerns have been raised that the use of cell phones could increase brain tumors. This paper systematically reviews the scientific evidence regarding the associations between cell phone use and brain tumors. The authors’ review suggests two conclusions. First, it is still controversial in regard with the significant associations between cell phone use and increased risk of brain tumors. Second, there exists extensive evidence that the amount of exposure to cell phone radiation plays a key role in determining the significant associations between cell phone use and gliomas, acoustic neuroma, and meningiomas. In general, those who use cell phones for more than ten years, using cell phones more than 20 minutes per day, or cumulative call time for more than 700 hours, or RF-EMF absorption for more than 3000 joules/kg have higher risks to develop brain tumors, whereas those who use cell phones for less than one year have lower risks.

A series of experiments using a laboratory and pilot-production high-voltage pulsed discharge (HVPD) installation for the processes of enrichment of gold-bearing mineral raw materials of Komsomolsk mine tailings in Kemerovo region is conducted with a relatively low energy electrical discharge in the pulse of up to 112.5 Joules and the cost of electric power of about 1.5 kW/ton of raw material, that allows complete destruction of clay components agglomerations to less than 0.045 mm (micron and submicron sizes). Solid minerals such as quartz are simultaneously destroyed by defects in the grains and withdrawn from the installation with water, thus increasing gold degree of the concentrate. The results of particle-size and X-ray structural analyses of gold-bearing mineral raw materials of Komsomolsk mine tailings in Kemerovo region obtained by the method of electric explosion are discussed.

This paper describes novel MEMS probe card device, which is composed of silicon (Si) cantilever beams actuated by titanium-nickel (Ti-Ni) shape memory alloy (SMA) films. Since Ti-Ni SMA film can yield a higher work output per unit volume, Ti-Ni film-actuated Si cantilever beam is expected to be a MEMS probe card device providing large contact force between probe and electrode pad. The developed cantilever beam produces a contact force by not only cantilever bending in contact but also the shape memory effect (SME) of Ti-Ni film arising from Joule’s heating. The SME of Ti-Ni film containing Ti of 50.5 atomic (at.) % to 53.2 at. % can generate an additional contact force of 200 μN on average under applying an electric power of 500 mW to the film. Ti-Ni film-actuated Si cantilever beam would be a key element for successful MEMS probe card with larger contact force and smaller size.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper summarizes a mathematical model for the industrial heating and cooling processes of a steel workpiece corresponding to the steering rack of an automobile. The general purpose of the heat treatment process is to create the necessary hardness on critical parts of the workpiece. Hardening consists of heating the workpiece up to a threshold temperature followed by a rapid cooling such as aquaquenching. The high hardness is due to the steel phase transformation accompanying the rapid cooling resulting in non-equilibrium phases, one of which is the hard microconstituent of steel, namely martensite. The mathematical model describes both processes, heating and cooling. During the first one, heat is produced by Joule’s effect from a very high alternating current passing through the rack. This situation is governed by a set of coupled PDEs/ODEs involving the electric potential, the magnetic vector potential, the temperature, the austenite transformation, the stresses and the displacement field. Once the workpiece has reached the desired temperature, the current is switched off an the cooling stage starts by aquaquenching. In this case, the governing equations involve the temperature, the austenite and martensite phase fractions, the stresses and the displacement field. This mathematical model has been solved by the FEM and 2D numerical simulations are discussed along the paper.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Agriculture is a production system in which the economic principles of organisation act in mutual dependence with its ecological boundaries. Objectives: Building on this premise, the paper evaluates performance of a chosen agricultural production system (dairy production in Slovenia) from two complementary perspectives, the socio-economic and the biophysical. Methods/Approach: The latter is presented by means of emergy analysis, which is a system-based approach that measures the aggregate work of biosphere needed for the provision of goods or services in the units of solar energy joules. The novelty aspect of this paper is the introduction of emergy indicators into the standard socioeconomic optimisation model of the chosen agricultural production system. The optimisation model based on linear mathematical programming is designed to empirically investigate different alternatives to the sector’s reorganisation. Results: The results of the optimisation models suggest considerable restructuring of the sector and, consequently, large discrepancies in the sector’s performance. Conclusions: The results suggest that further expansion of organic production systems as a result of a stronger environmental focus in farm management would improve the sector from both, the socio-economic and the emergy perspective. Moreover, even pursuing certain socio-economic targets may improve the sector’s biophysical performance and lower pressure on the local environment.

Abstract:
At some orphaned and abandoned mine sites, acid mine drainage can represent a complex challenge due to the advanced tailings’ oxidation state as well as the combination of other factors. At the field scale, several parameters control sulfides’ oxidation rates and, therefore, the acidity generation. The objective of this paper is to map the acidity and geochemical properties of oxidized tailings within a closed tailings storage facility. Based on systematic sampling, various geochemical parameters were measured within the oxidized Joutel tailings, including the: Neutralization potential, acid-generating potential, net neutralization potential, neutralization potential ratio, paste pH, thickness of oxidized, hardpan, and transition zones. The different parameters were integrated in geographical information system (GISs) databases to quantify the spatial variability of the acidity and geochemical properties of oxidized tailings. The oxidized tailings were characterized by low sulfide (mainly as pyrite) and carbonate (mainly as siderite/ankerite) contents compared to unweathered tailings. Acidic zones, identified based on paste pH, were located in the eastern portion of the southern zone and at the northern tip of the northern zone.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper aims at providing a framework to calculate the agro-eco-compensation standard based on the systems agro-ecological concept of embodied energy as emergy. We have proposed a calculation system of eco-compensation standard for sustainable agricultural development based on the convertibility between emergy and price. According to our calculation, the total energy of agricultural production in Yongding River Basin was 3.45 E + 16 Sej/ha (the unit emergy value, expressed in solar emergy joules per unit) in terms of the renewable resources, nonrenewable resources, material inputs, and service costs. The energy of renewable and nonrenewable resources was 1.59 E + 16 and 1.86E + 16 Sej/ha, respectively. The ESI (environmental sustainability index) of the study area was 0.1056, indicating that its agricultural production was in a seriously unsustainable condition. To realize the sustainable agricultural production in the watershed, the downstream governments should pay $21.81 M (¥135 million) approximately to upstream governments for water and soil conservation. The results of the present study suggested that the emergy-based calculation method of agro-eco-compensation standard is feasible to a certain degree.

Abstract:
Several types of laser have been used in the larynx. A diode laser is a portable and relatively cheap device. Thus, this paper aims to report the experience with the use of diode laser in laryngeal microsurgeries, through the analysis of electronic medical records of 37 patients who underwent laryngeal microsurgery from January to June 2014. It was noted that the main indication for the surgery was in women, aged 50-60 years, the vast majority with a diagnostic hypothesis of vocal polyp. The optical fiber used was 400µm (micrometer), with a power of 3W, with pulsed emission mode, a pulse width of 20PPS, and a frequency of 25 milliseconds. The application time for the resection of the lesions was an average of 86 seconds, using an energy of 132 joules. Laryngeal microsurgery using the diode laser technique presented advantages, due to the ease of handling the equipment, safety during its use, and skillful surgical time, without the occurrence of any complications during its application in the vocal folds.
