Abstract:
Since 1993, the first zoological journal Selevinia has been launched in Almaty. Selevinia publishes articles in various branches of zoology, including taxonomy, fauna, parasitology, and many others. The articles published in the journal contain information on the fauna of Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries. Articles on the fauna, as well as on ecology and animal behaviour predominate. In total, 963 scientific works (495 articles, 155 short reports, and 313 notes) were published in the first 20 volumes of the journal (1993–2013), including 132 theriological articles. A bibliographic review of theriological articles is given, in particular about the composition of fauna (3) and on several species of different systematic groups, e.g. rodents and bats (5), ungulates (5), and carnivorans (16). Among the latter, articles on representatives of the family Felidae predominate, such as on the Turkestan lynx (Lynx lynx isabellinus), the caracal (Lynx caracal), the African wildcat (Felis lybica), the snow leopard (Uncia uncia), and the leopard (Panthera pardus). All issues of the journal are freely available online. According to the interlibrary exchange, the journal reaches 63 libraries in 35 countries. Some articles are published in English, the rest having English summary that facilitates access by foreign readers to scientific articles published in the journal. Selevinia issues for 2012-2019 are posted electronically with full access to texts on several websites, including the websites of the Institute of Zoology of Kazakhstan, the Central Scientific Library of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, and the Kazakhstan Association for Biodiversity Conservation.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough bats (Chiroptera) belong to the most diverse mammalian orders, study of diversity of their natural predators has been seriously neglected for a long time. While some recent reviews contain comprehensive overviews of our recent knowledge on these phenomena for some animal groups, such work is still lacking for anamniotes - fishes and amphibians. Here, I am summarising bat predation incidences by anamniotes that were published in scientific journals and public web domains. I found out that at least 14 species of fishes and 14 species of frogs were observed as feeding on bats. Moreover, 7 and 16 species of bats were recorded as victims of hunting activity of fishes and frogs, respectively. Majority of localised incidences came from the New World; frog (between latitude 49°N to 28°S) attacks were distributed mainly in tropical or subtropical areas < 30° from equator (70% of all records), fish (44°N to 20°S) incidences reach same proportion in colder areas (> 30° from equator) and warmer areas. In some cases, these predators can regularly feed on bats, especially when hunting near roosting places of bats; however, with respect to number of recorded cases (21 for fishes and 37 for amphibians), bat predation by anamniotes seems to be very rare and opportunistic with only very limited influence on bat populations or their behaviour.

Abstract:
A survey was made of the 1124 research papers dealing with wild mammals living in Canada published in 11 relevant biological journals from 1971 to 1986. This study extends an earlier survey carried out by the author for the years 1931–1970. Canadian journals in general, and the Canadian Journal of Zoology in particular, published most of the research papers, which are far more numerous than they were in the earlier period. Research papers are increasingly written by two or more authors, and there seems to be a different pattern of publishing for women than for men. Most research was done by university personnel, who came from 35 Canadian (and a number of American) universities. Field studies in general were more numerous in the more densely populated provinces, although more studies were carried out in the Northwest Territories than in any other jurisdiction. The Canadian Federal Government financed most research projects, followed by Provincial and Territorial governments, and Canadian universities. However, well over 50 different groups or institutions funded at least a few studies each. The most studied subjects were behavior, anatomy and physiology, populations, and ecology and habitat. The most studied species were small mammals, large carnivores, seals that are hunted, and big game species. The mammals studied least were insectivores, bats, lagomorphs, and whales.

Abstract:
The modern emerging infection Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is of global threat originates from Africa region. This is zoonotic and identified as human diseases or previously called Ebola hemorrhagic fever which is a highly fatal human illness where case fatality rate is found up to 90%. The virus transmission begins from wild animals to human and then spreads within population through human to human. Fruit bats are found as natural host of Ebola virus. There is no specific treatment or vaccine available in the market so far, intensive supportive care is needed for severely ill patients. This paper highlights background information, problem statement, viral characteristics, mode of transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention & vaccination. It also indicates possible actions towards prevention of transmission & personal protection.Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Journal Vol. 6, No. 1: January 2015, Pages 35-37

Abstract:
New World bats play a significant role in ecosystem functioning and are imperative for maintaining environmental services. Nevertheless, human-caused environmental changes are jeopardizing bat communities, which results in the loss of functional roles provided by them. It is important, therefore, to assess ecological processes performed by bats in the Neotropics to define priorities in further research for better conservation planning. In this systematic review, I identify general trends, advances, bias, and knowledge gaps in bat-mediated ecological processes across Neotropical ecosystems. I conducted an extensive search on Google scholar, Scopus, Web of science, and Bat Eco–Interactions Database resulting in 538 references, of which 185 papers were included in the review. The papers were published in 76 peer-reviewed journals, with the highest peak between 2006-2010. From the six biomes recorded, Moist broadleaf tropical forest was the most researched, contrary to Montane biomes (<2000 m), where few studies have been conducted. Seed dispersal was the process with more studies (44%), followed by pollination (38%), nutrient cycling (10%) and arthropod suppression (8%). Seed dispersal and pollination displayed large bias on specific bat-plant systems and ecoregions, thus being important to explore other bat and plant species as well as other ecosystems. Arthropod suppression and nutrient cycling were largely overlooked despite to constitute essential functions in ecosystem resilience; particularly, more research is needed to know cascading effects on plant fitness in different agroforestry systems, but also is key the understanding of how bats can be pivotal mobile links in terrestrial ecosystems and cave environments. I highlight the importance to consider bats with multiple roles and functional trait-based approach to gain a comprehensive understanding of their functionality. Bat extirpations are likely to affect their ecological roles, therefore, mitigating major threats of bats are urgently needed to sustain ecosystem integrity in the Neotropics. Even though functional studies have increased in the last two decades, several aspects of bat roles are still obscured and is necessary to keep evaluating their ecological and economic importance to provide useful information for major decision-makings in Neotropical ecosystems' conservation.

Bat IPM
Bats, order Chiroptera, have traditionally been maligned and misunderstood by the general public. Bats are, however, important components of the natural and urban landscape; they provide valuable pest control of public health and nuisance insects, and they serve an important role in the pollination of several of Arizona's native columnar cacti. In urban environments, particularly schools, bats are of concern due to their ability to vector the rabies virus. Consequently, the status of bats of bats in schools has become that of a pest. Integrated pest management (IPM) methods have traditionally been reserved for managing arthropods; however, the fundamental principles of urban IPM may be just as easily applied to mammals with equal success. The ecologically sensitive aspects of IPM make this a highly preferred approach in managing bats as an organism of considerable conservation concern.

Abstract:
The presence of bats inside church buildings can result in negative impacts, requests for advice and disagreements about what management approaches are appropriate. Despite the suspected importance of churches for bats, there has been little research focusing on the ecology and behaviour of bats in church buildings, and current gaps in knowledge sometimes restricts the quality of advice that can be given. This study makes use of several approaches (examination of existing records, a regional field survey, temperature and acoustic monitoring and radio-tracking) to improve understanding of the ecology of bats roosting in churches, with a focus on Pipistrellus pygmaeus (which can cause some of the most severe problems) in eastern England. The study focused on this region because it had the highest number of requests for advice about bats from church representatives in England. Inside churches, roof or ceiling crevices in the south sides of churches were preferentially selected as roost sites, and were also warmer than equivalent crevices in the north sides of churches. Roost crevices were characterised by fluctuating temperatures which warmed dramatically during the day and cooled at night, whereas church interior temperatures were stable. Within the highly modified, fragmented arable landscapes of eastern England, a modelling approach showed that P. pygmaeus selects church roosts with more wetland habitat cover within typical commuting distance, and which are closer to broad-leaved woodland, than churches in general. Radio-tagged female P. pygmaeus typically select wetland and woodland habitats for foraging, with arable land consistently the least selected, but most available habitat. I found substantial differences among colonies in home range and commuting distances, with bats from one colony commuting up to 15.9 km to reach foraging resources. Mobility may be important for the persistence of P. pygmaeus in fragmented landscapes by allowing bats to exploit multiple distant and dispersed foraging patches. Radio-tracked P. pygmaeus bats from three colonies collectively made use of multiple alternative day roosts in a range of structures across large areas, but bats at two colonies mostly day roosted in their respective church roosts. Using automatic, continuous acoustic monitoring, I found that P. pygmaeus bats were present and active inside three medieval churches throughout the year, with activity peaking in July. P. pygmaeus activity inside churches was positively correlated with night-time temperatures and negatively correlated with wind speed. Recommendations for conservation management are made along with possible future directions for applied research.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Human development continues to use up more physical space in the natural world, threatening the natural habitats of many organisms. To combat the loss of biodiversity science needs to explore what landscape features are important for different organisms so that we can incorporate these into the modern environment. As bats play an important role in many ecosystems and can reflect changes through trophic levels, analyzing their preferred habitats can help planners improve biological diversity of the urban habitat. Using acoustically identified bat sightings from Artportalen.se for the years 2017-2018, this paper studied the habitats of bats in Sweden. Through multiple regression analysis we examine the response in abundance and/or diversity of bats to physical and socio-cultural attributes of the urban habitat. We examined a total of 10160 bats from 18 species in 418 land cover locales and 306 demographical statistical areas with varying degrees of urbanization. Our results indicate that bat abundance and diversity decrease significantly with higher urbanization while deciduous forests are the most important land cover type for all bats. The results also indicate that wealthier areas have less abundance and diversity even when factoring in population density. Species specific analysis suggested that bat species who are better adapted at foraging in open vegetated landscapes and over water were less susceptible to the negative impacts of the urban habitat. We conclude that diverse habitats with a mixture of open vegetated areas, watercourses and broadleaf forests are the most important land features for a diverse bat fauna along with high connectivity via tree cover and linear landscape elements. If urban planning could incorporate these features into the urban habitat, some of the negative impacts of urbanization could be prevented.

Abstract:
This paper presents an approach for the evaluation of the effects related to the behavior of the journal bearings on the operation of external gear machines (EGMs). In EGMs journal bearings usually support shafts of both gears. The prediction of their instantaneous axis of rotation is a key feature of EGMs, affecting the displacing action of the inter-teeth volumes and the leakages at the tip of each tooth. Past approaches presented in the literature for the evaluation of the radial micro-motions of the gears are based on classic simplified models for the hydrodynamic journal bearings based on steady-state solutions of the fluid film neglecting important hydrodynamic effects due to film squeeze — which can be relevant in case of significant radial loads variations — or they concentrate the focus of the study on the journal bearing itself regardless of the impact on the global machine operation. This work presents a CFD model coupled with a rigid model for the evaluation of the radial motions of the journal that permits to overcome the above-mentioned limitations of the existing approaches of study. The paper details the proposed model, in particular as concerns the CFD approach to solve the film flow and its coupling with a previously developed model (HYGESim) developed by the authors’ team for the evaluation of the overall operation of the EGM, used also to find the instantaneous loads on the gears. The potentials of the proposed approach are shown for the case of a pump for high pressure applications. For this case the results show how it is necessary to have a detailed approach for the evaluation of the journal bearings for a correct evaluation of the overall EGM behavior. In particular, the importance of hydrodynamic squeeze effects are shown, by comparing the model prediction with those given by the commonly used simplified steady-state approach. The comparison of simulation results with experimental data is also shown as pertain to pump case wear associated to the break in process.

Abstract:
Abstract The hunt for increased efficiency and reliability of fluid power components have entailed a great deal of research on loss and wear mechanisms by means of computational tribology simulation in the last decades. The vast amount of theoretical work within tribology necessitates validation of the simulation models. The aim to validate such models has in recent years increased interest in sophisticated tribological measurement technology. A next level, for tribology in fluid power, is the integration of modelling, analysis and measurement technology with control to achieve active tribology, namely fluid power tribotronics. In this paper the challenge of feedback for tribotronic control loops in fluid power are addressed. Fundamental questions are in this regard to what extend do we need information? Is it necessary to measure fluid film thickness absolutely or dynamically, or do we even need in-situ information on the tribological joints? These questions are analysed in this paper by use of a dynamic lubricated journal-bearing model. From this analysis a conclusion on the oil whirl limit is found, which reveal an interesting perspective and potential risk in the application of feedforward in tribotronic control of lubricated journal-bearings. Finally, a discussion is concluded with the submission of relevant open research directions for fluid power tribotronic control systems.

Abstract:
Abstract A trend in industry and academia is the design of variable-speed pump drives for use in hydraulic supply units, actuation of hydraulic cylinders and so forth, due to the potential of highly limited throttling. A main drawback in existing variable-speed pump drives is the operation of pumps at high loads and low shaft speeds, potentially increasing wear in pump bearings, especially in pumps with journal bearings. Such journal bearings rely on hydrodynamic lubrication films created by the rotation of the pump, which is minimised or removed completely when the pump shaft speed is in the lower range with a high load. The purpose of the study presented is to investigate how these conditions limit the operation of variable-speed pump drives, and how these challenges may be overcome. The study takes offset in the establishment of a wear rate constructed from a risk factor in the form of the Ocvirk number and an impact factor developed from Archard’s wear law. With this wear rate, a novel control method targeting the best possible operating conditions for the pump bearings is proposed, when applied to a simple variable-speed drive. Lastly, the consequence of applying the proposed control method on the energy efficiency is investigated. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed control method reduces the wear rate and hereby the risk of an early pump failure, however, on the cost of a generally reduced energy efficiency.

Abstract:
Abstract In this work, the authors present a robust and integrated procedure for the design of multi-stage gear pumps to be used in dry sump system applications. Based on the target delivery flow rate, rotational speed and fluid properties, the developed iterative method enables to directly obtain the geometrical features and the working parameters of the pump components, such as gearpair specifics, shaft and journal bearing dimensions, clearance values. The methodology is then applied to a case study in order to highlight its features and detail the achievable outcomes. Quality of the results is assessed by means of a CFD analysis, demonstrating the capability to obtain the expected volumetric efficiency.

Abstract:
Flooded lubrication of tilting-pad journal bearings provides safe and robust operation for many applications due to a completely filled gap at the leading edge of each pad. While flooded conditions can be ensured by restrictive seals on the lateral bearing ends for any conventional bearing design, direct lubrication by leading edge grooves (LEG) placed on the pads represents an alternative to produce completely filled gaps at the entrance to the convergent lubricant film. Moreover, this design is flexible to apply different axial sealing baffles in order to influence the thermal equilibrium within the entire bearing. A theoretical model is presented that describes the specific influences of LEG design on the operating characteristics. First, in opposite to conventional tilting-pad journal bearing designs the LEG is a self-contained lube oil pocket which is generally connected to an outer annular oil supply channel. Consequently, each leading edge groove can feature a specific speed and load dependent effective pocket pressure and flow rate. As a consequence of this and the fact that the LEG is part of the pad, it directly influences its tilting angle. Secondly, the thermal inlet mixing model must consider the specific flow conditions depending on the main flow direction within the film as well as the one between outer annular channel and pocket. The novel LEG model is integrated into a comprehensive bearing code validated earlier for other bearing designs. The code is based on an extended Reynolds equation and a three-dimensional energy equation. The entire theoretical model is validated with test data from high performance journal bearing test rig for a four tilting-pad bearing in load between pivot orientation. The bearing is described by the following specifications: 0.5 nominal preload, 60% offset, 70° pad arc angle, 120 mm inner diameter, 72 mm pad length and 1.7 per mille relative bearing clearance. Measurements are conducted for rotational speeds between 4000 and 15000 rpm and specific bearing loads between 0.5 and 2.5 MPa. Within the investigated operating range good agreement between theoretical and experimental data is achieved if all boundary conditions are accurately considered. Additionally, the impact of single simplifications within the model are studied and evaluated. Finally, the test data is compared to results from the same test bearing with modified lubricant oil supply conditions in order to identify specific properties of LEG design. Here, the leading groove edge elements are replaced by conventional spray-bars. It is shown that an assessment of the comparison depends on the definition of reference conditions as the bearings require different oil flow rates for nominal operation due to their design.

Abstract:
A key component of hydraulic fluid power systems — the standard orifice and, consequently, all equivalent components — apparently has, to this day, some mysteries yet to be unveiled. Knowledge on cavitation-induced liquid flow choking or saturation, which is a well founded topic in some areas of the wide field of hydraulics, e.g. water distribution piping systems, is practically neglected when assessing the design of typical mineral-oil-based power generation and control systems, for both mobile and industrial applications. This conclusion holds true at every level of study, from the technical reference literature adopted by designers to the more popular textbooks and journal papers. Moreover, the rare works addressing the phenomenon are focused on the underlying physical mechanics, completely missing any kind of evaluation of the functional consequences, especially the need to “revise” the standard quadratic law of turbulent flow. Prompted by one of these works, a preliminary experimental activity has been carried out, aimed at determining the actual flow characteristic of standard screw-in orifices used in fluid power pilot circuits. The results confirmed the undoubted presence of flow saturation; based on that, a suitable theoretical description was developed, and some practical applications are outlined in the paper. Finally, few open questions are listed, which need to be answered.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a mathematical model of a radial ball piston pump/motor. The specific application of the pump is for direct integration with a high speed electric motor for use in off highway vehicles. The pump/motor must operate across all four quadrants with high flow rates at a low pressure differential. The model captures the major mechanical and volumetric losses within the hydraulic machine with specific attention given to the ball-cylinder interface and the pintle-rotor interface. The leakage and shear at the ball piston interface are dependent on the position of the ball piston in the cylinder; therefore, the dynamics of the ball piston are calculated. The pintle-rotor model includes the port geometry, which influences the flow rates into and out of the pump/motor. Leakage and shear at the interface are dependent on the gap height between the two surfaces; consequently, the model calculates the radial forces acting on the rotor and uses journal bearing theory to predict the eccentricity. This eccentricity balances the other forces and is necessary to determine the interface losses. Lastly, the importance of these dynamics is evaluated to determine which are needed in a future optimization framework. It is shown that considering the dynamics of both interfaces captures significantly more losses and results in a more accurate model than an earlier simplified one.
