Full textBat IPM
Bats, order Chiroptera, have traditionally been maligned and misunderstood by the general public. Bats are, however, important components of the natural and urban landscape; they provide valuable pest control of public health and nuisance insects, and they serve an important role in the pollination of several of Arizona's native columnar cacti. In urban environments, particularly schools, bats are of concern due to their ability to vector the rabies virus. Consequently, the status of bats of bats in schools has become that of a pest. Integrated pest management (IPM) methods have traditionally been reserved for managing arthropods; however, the fundamental principles of urban IPM may be just as easily applied to mammals with equal success. The ecologically sensitive aspects of IPM make this a highly preferred approach in managing bats as an organism of considerable conservation concern.

Full textMarine ecosystems are under a wide range of natural or anthropogenic forcings. In response to these forcings, marine organisms rely notably on their phenotypic plasticity to preserve their fitness. In this thesis, I am particularly interested in the behavioural plasticity of juvenile European sea bass in response to two environmental stressors, food deprivation and exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the consequences of these disturbances through an integrative approach that assesses direct effects at the individual level, but also possible indirect impacts at the population and community levels. The behavioural tests implemented allowed the evaluation of three behavioural traits : sociability, risk-taking and exploration. From an analytical point of view, a principal component analysis was applied in order to objectify the identification of behaviours and their interpretation. Experimental results show that fasting reduces sociability and that exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons can lead to alterations in the anti-predator response. These results suggest adverse effects on the fitness of individuals with possible repercussions on ecological dynamics through altered intra- (gregarious) and inter-specific (predator/prey) relationships. This research illustrates how behavioural regulations can link the effects of environmental disturbances to multiple levels of organization, from the individual to the ecosystem

This thesis is the first scholarly analysis of the artistic legacy of Georges Rouault (1871 – 1958), which was donated almost in its entirety to the French State in 1963. In 1964, just a year after the donation had been made by the artist’s heirs, this group of works was celebrated as a “révélation de l’atelier” in an exhibition at the Louvre, but no detailed analysis was subsequently undertaken. Today the 891 sketches, studies and unfinished works are among the largest and most interesting collections held by the Centre Pompidou. By considering the significance of the artist’s working process, the present study not only meets the explicit concerns of the donors but also takes account of the special character of this group of works. This unique collection – both as a whole and through the individual works – provides a wealth of information about hitherto unexplained key aspects of Rouault’s working process: from the ubiquitous phenomenon of the ‘inachevé’ to the fundamental interrelationship between the work of the painter and that of the printmaker and to explicitly style-shaping poietic strategies. The latter provides the key to understanding Rouault’s narrow canon of forms, the remarkable haptic materiality of his works and the constant dualism of the elements of colour and drawing in his distinctive style of “cloisonnisme”. At the same time, the work process of this artist, who has often been described as a solitary figure in classical modernism, also exemplifies – in a sometimes uncompromisingly radical manner – certain characteristics of the art of an entire period.
