Abstract:
Petroleum contaminated soils have become a great concern worldwide. Bioremediation has been widely recognized as one of the most promising technologies and has played an important role in solving the issues of petroleum contaminated soils. In this study, a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer based on Web of Science data was conducted to provide an overview on the field of bioremediation of petroleum contaminated soils. A total of 7575 articles were analyzed on various aspects of the publication characteristics, such as publication output, countries, institutions, journals, highly cited papers, and keywords. An evaluating indicator, h-index, was applied to characterize the publications. The pace of publishing in this field increased steadily over last 20 years. China accounted for the most publications (1476), followed by the United States (1032). The United States had the highest h-index (86) and also played a central role in the collaboration network among the most productive countries. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the institution with the largest number of papers (347) and cooperative relations (52). Chemosphere was the most productive journal (360). Our findings indicate that the influence of developing countries has increased over the years, and researchers tend to publish articles in high-quality journals. At present, mainstream research is centered on biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and biosurfactant application. Combined pollution of petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals, microbial diversity monitoring, biosurfactant application, and biological combined remediation technology are considered future research hotspots.

Abstract:
The petroleum needs as primary energy in Indonesia more increasing, while the petroleum reserves were more depleting so that coal utilization as primary energy is inevitable. Therefore, needed a solution in coal utilization which is environmentally friendly (clean energy) to fulfill the national energy needs. This research is based on the analysis and study of 11 research journals related to coal bio-solubilization technology published in the period 1994 to 2019. The results show that low-rank coal has the potential as the environmentally friendly alternative energy by converting solid coal into liquid phase equivalent to gasoline and diesel which is sulfur and nitrogen-free with bio-solubilization technology. However, this bio-solubilization technology has the disadvantage of the slow coal degradation process into the liquid phase because it only relies on the microorganism’s ability. The application of coal bio-solubilization technology as the alternative energy to support energy security requires genetic engineering and catalyst technology research support to improve the microorganism’s ability to increase the coal degradation rate.

Abstract:
Crude petroleum ether and methanol extracts of different parts of five medicinal plants collected from Terai region, namely, Asparagus racemosus, Catharanthus roseus, Hedychium coronarium, Mimosa pudica and Terminalia chebula were examined for their antimicrobial activity against different pathogenic microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsella spp., Salmonella paratyphi, Bacillus subtilis, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium spp. and Penicillium spp. From the obtained growth curves of methanol extract of Terminalia chebula and petroleum ether and methanol extracts of Hedychium coronarium, it can be said these extracts have relatively high bacteriostatic property than other plant extracts. Similarly, the zone of inhibitions observed during antifungal assay by methanol extract of Terminalia chebula against Aspergillus niger, Fusarium spp. and Penicillium spp. are comparable to that of Itraconazole (antifungal drug). It shows that Terminalia chebula has fungistatic property. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids and glycosides. Abstract:
Purpose Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU) is one of the prominent Universities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), of the Government of Abu Dhabi. The new Khalifa University was re-constituted in the year 2017 by merging three higher education institutions in Abu Dhabi, the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research and the Petroleum Institute. The objectives of these institutions and their research areas were entirely disparate in the pre-merger era and hence the evaluation of the research performance of its pre-merged entities in the past is vital for Khalifa University to plan for the future course of actions. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This study analyzes and visualizes scholarly publications of Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU) using SCOPUS data. There are various qualitative and quantitative methods to measure research performance. This study adopted citation analysis, one of the widely recognized quantitative metrics to measure the citation impact of scholarly publications. Findings Khalifa University leads in productivity compared to other UAE universities but the citation impact of its publications is less in comparison to United Arab Emirates University and New York University, Abu Dhabi in terms of citations per publication. The majority of KU publications are not highly cited. The majority of the KU publications (80 percent) received fewer citations and few papers (20 percent of the KU publications) attracted 80 percent of the total citations received for KU publications. Analysis results indicate that publishing in top-ranked journals would improve the chance of getting more citations. On average, eight percentage difference is seen in the h-index of KU authors when removing self-citations. Research limitations/implications The study considered only publications that are indexed in SCOPUS. It covered a limited set of sources as per the SCOPUS editorial policy. Most of the covered sources are journals and conference proceedings. Books’ data coverage in Citation Index is comparatively low, which may affect results regarding social sciences and humanities publications because book publication is more prominent in these subject areas. Khalifa University is a science and technology university, and the majority of its academic departments fall in science and technology domains. Even though there are few arts and humanities departments in the University, it will not affect the overall findings of the results of the analysis. Originality/value This study is original research conducted to study the impact of research publications of Khalifa University using Scopus data.

Abstract:
During the past 18 years, estimations of reserves of the Palm Valley gas field were the subject of many unpublished studies and one that was published in the Journal of Petroleum Technology by Strobel, Gulati and Ramey in 1976. The unpublished studies relied on standard methods of volumetric and material balance calculations. Because the Palm Valley reservoir is naturally fractured, static reservoir pressure estimates made from pressure buildup tests are erroneous unless a well is closed to a Horner time ratio of 1.5 or less. This was not done at Palm Valley and consequently all material balance estimates of gas-in-place were uneconomically low.The estimates of Stobel et al. (1976) were based on matching interference test data observed in two wells during a constant flow period of 18.75 days, which was followed by a pulse test. However, their model matched the pressure observed at one well and failed to match the pressure observed at the second, more distant well. Their reserve estimates were also very low.In this study, a reservoir simulator was used to formulate a model that matched the observed pressures in both wells. Except for the reservoir area, all of the reservoir parameters derived by Strobel from the interference test data were used. The results show that the Palm Valley reservoir contains between 262 and 356 billion standard cubic feet of gas-in-place in the fracture system and the higher permeability matrix rock. Based on our model and including gas in the tight matrix, it is quite possible that the total gas-in-place ranges between 726 billion standard cubic feet and 1.106 trillion standard cubic feet.

Full text
Abstract:
Triglycerides are the main constituents of lipids, which are the fatty acids of glycerol. Natural organic triglycerides (viz. virgin vegetable oils, recycled cooking oils, and animal fats) are the main sources for biodiesel production. Biodiesel (mono alkyl esters) is the most attractive alternative fuel to diesel, with numerous environmental advantages over petroleum-based fuel. The most practicable method for converting triglycerides to biodiesel with viscosities comparable to diesel fuel is transesterification. Previous research has proven that biodiesel–diesel blends can operate the compression ignition engine without the need for significant modifications. However, the commercialization of biodiesel is still limited due to the high cost of production. In this sense, the transesterification route is a crucial factor in determining the total cost of biodiesel production. Homogenous base-catalyzed transesterification, industrially, is the conventional method to produce biodiesel. However, this method suffers from limitations both environmentally and economically. Although there are review articles on transesterification, most of them focus on a specific type of transesterification process and hence do not provide a comprehensive picture. This paper reviews the latest progress in research on all facets of transesterification technology from reports published by highly-rated scientific journals in the last two decades. The review focuses on the suggested modifications to the conventional method and the most promising innovative technologies. The potentiality of each technology to produce biodiesel from low-quality feedstock is also discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
A recent study by the Wall Street Journal reveals that the hydrofractured horizontal wells in shales have been producing less than the industrial forecasts with the empirical hyperbolic decline curve analysis (DCA). As an alternative to DCA, we introduce a simple, fast and accurate method of estimating ultimate recovery in oil shales. We adopt a physics-based scaling approach to analyze oil rates and ultimate recovery from 14,888 active horizontal oil wells in the Bakken shale. To predict the Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR), we collapse production records from individual horizontal shale oil wells onto two segments of a master curve: (1) We find that cumulative oil production from 4845 wells is still growing linearly with the square root of time; and (2) 6401 wells are already in exponential decline after approximately seven years on production. In addition, 2363 wells have discontinuous production records, because of refracturing or changes in downhole flowing pressure, and are matched with a linear combination of scaling curves superposed in time. The remaining 1279 new wells with less than 12 months on production have too few production records to allow for robust matches. These wells are scaled with the slopes of other comparable wells in the square-root-of-time flow regime. In the end, we predict that total ultimate recovery from all existing horizontal wells in Bakken will be some 4.5 billion barrels of oil. We also find that wells completed in the Middle Bakken formation, in general, produce more oil than those completed in the Upper Three Forks formation. The newly completed longer wells with larger hydrofractures have higher initial production rates, but they decline faster and have EURs similar to the cheaper old wells. There is little correlation among EUR, lateral length, and the number and size of hydrofractures. Therefore, technology may not help much in boosting production of new wells completed in the poor immature areas along the edges of the Williston Basin. Operators and policymakers may use our findings to optimize the possible futures of the Bakken shale and other plays. More importantly, the petroleum industry may adopt our physics-based method as an alternative to the overly optimistic hyperbolic DCA that yields an ‘illusory picture’ of shale oil resources.

Abstract:
Imaging buried geological boundaries is one of a major objective during the interpretation of magnetic field data in Geophysics. Therefore, edge detection and edge enhancement techniques assist a crucial role on this aim. Most of the existing edge detector methods require to obtain special points such as in general the maxima of the resulting image. One of the useful tools in estimating edges from magnetic data is the tilt angle of the analytical signal amplitude due to its value slightly dependence on the direction of magnetization. In this study, the maxima of the tilt angle of analytical signal amplitudes of the magnetic data was determined by a curvature-based method. The technique is based on fitting a quadratic surface over a 3×3 windows of the grid for locating any appropriate critical point that is near the centre of the window. The algorithm is built in Matlab environment. The feasibility of the algorithm is demonstrated in two cases of synthetic data as well as on real magnetic data from Tu Chinh-Vung May area. Abstract:
The optical setup for holographic projection on the scatterings in fluorescent liquids is presented. Such media can be used as volumetric screens for near-eye holographic displays, solving the problem of speckle noise and very small exit pupils in existing setups. Three different oils (canola, olive and engine oil) with 532 nm laser and tonic water with 405 nm laser are used for projecting holographic fields, the quality of such images is investigated. The laser wavelength is cut out from acquisition on a camera and only filtered fluorescent light is observed. The best and brightest results are obtained with engine oil. Full Text: PDF ReferencesX. Abstract:

Abstract:
Summary Spurred by improvements in reliability, cost, and accuracy, sensors offer a means of increasing expected ultimate hydrocarbon recovery in producing assets as well as in planned and prospective projects. Ultimate hydrocarbon recoveries larger than those currently achieved are possible, especially when sensors are used with advanced recovery methods. However, it is often unclear if the incremental recovery justifies the cost of installing the sensors. This paper proposes a method for estimating incremental values attributable to real-time sensors and provides a demonstration of the method for several production technologies and reservoir settings. The method offers a transparent and practical means of making value of information (VOI) computations to be implemented readily by project teams. An additional benefit of this method is that the process of specifying the inputs to the analysis facilitates a systematic discussion of strengths and weaknesses, and builds consensus regarding assumptions. The method is applied to four scenarios developed by a panel of industry experts to represent generic, but yet realistic reservoirs. The results for these scenarios indicate the value of sensors depends on the market price for product and the type of reservoir and production technology. The greatest absolute economic value for the use of sensors is obtained for a deepwater reservoir, while the greatest economic value per equivalent barrel of oil produced is obtained for a mature onshore reservoir. These expected economic values are intended to be compared to the cost required to implement the sensors to assess whether or not there is an expected net benefit. Introduction Formal methods of valuing information (sometimes called monetizing information) have existed in the research and professional literature for many years. Most publications on VOI have appeared in financial, economic, operations research, or decision analysis journals (Roberts and Weitzman 1981); little has appeared in engineering publications, especially petroleum engineering publications. Recently, a review of VOI in the oil and gas industry was presented by Bratvold et al. (2007). VOI methods are simple at the highest conceptual level: the values for courses of action with and without sensors are estimated and compared. The difference between the expected values with and without sensors is the expected value of the sensors and therefore represents the maximum willingness to pay (WTP) for the sensors. If the WTP for the sensors is greater than the cost of installation (e.g., sensor cost, installation costs, and deferred production) and operation of the sensors, their installation is expected to provide a net benefit. VOI assessments have the following components:They account for uncertainty in the outcome of decisions. The existence of uncertainty is the reason the valuation is based on expected values. They capture the ability of the sensors to change a decision. Typical decisions are an optimization of the current technology, immediate changes in technology, or the nature and timing of future technology changes. They allow for the sensors to change the monetary outcome of a course of action even when a decision is not changed by the information. This paper proposes a method for VOI assessment of real-time sensors and demonstrates the method for four different combinations of hydrocarbon recovery technologies and reservoir settings:CO2 injection in mature oil reservoirs,steam-assisted gravity drainage in heavy oil reservoirs, hydraulic fracturing in tight gas reservoirs, andwaterflooding in deepwater sandstone reservoirs. Drawing on industry experts, significant effort was made to make the cases as realistic as possible so the results can be used to inform the development of project- and corporate-level plans regarding the use of sensors. But, because of project and portfolio idiosyncrasies, the results are not to be viewed as definitive or totally generalizable.

Abstract:
This technical note summarizes a technical comparison of common testing procedures, as well as reviewed of the UN Test N` 5, for the assessment of the self-heating properties of cargoes and materials that has shown a clear trend on maritime fire and explosions events, as well as considering of external factors that can combine self-heating and emit flammable gases to conclude in an unlikely event affecting the security of crews and ships. A high understanding of the external factors effect on the cargo materials certainly will help the application of spontaneous reactions management actions (SRMA) on board of ships during the cargo sea passage. The intended comparison is based on laboratory, industry and field observations and data, whereas the among the external factors considered are, moisture content, stockpile procedure and aging, air velocities and moderate pressures internal and externally to the cargo material. The comparison results have shown that the self-heating and the flammable gas emissions has a common pattern when reacting with any oxygen available source, regardless the reactive material chemical composition.

This paper is based on the results of first year of two-year study in integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) in chemistry learning. The research focused on developing 21st-century skills of chemistry students in secondary schools. The 21st-century skills are a set of abilities that students need to develop in facing the future challenge which involves learning, literacy, and life skills. The study was conducted in two secondary schools both public and private on the topics of hydrocarbon, petroleum, solubility, and acid base in year 10 and 11. A qualitative methodology was applied to explore the students' learning experiences and understanding the research context. Data was collected through observation, interview, reflective journal and 21st-century rubric. The STEAM approach was integrated through modification of project-based learning model. The students had opportunities to develop their own projects by integrating chemistry and STEAM principles to their project. The results showed that students have developed their higher order thinking skills namely critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and argumentation. They also learnt to develop skills of information, literacy and the self-direction.

Abstract:
A rotordynamic analysis of a large turbocompressor that models both the casing and supports along with the rotor-bearing system was performed. A 3D finite element model of the casing captures the intricate details of the casing and support structure. Two approaches are presented, including development of transfer functions of the casing and foundation, as well as a fully coupled rotor-casing-foundation model. The effect of bearing support compliance is captured, as well as the influence of casing modes on the rotor response. The first approach generates frequency response functions (FRFs) from the finite element case model at the bearing support locations. A high-order polynomial in numerator-denominator transfer function format is generated from a curve fit of the FRF. These transfer functions are then incorporated into the rotordynamics model. The second approach is a fully coupled rotor and casing model that is solved together. An unbalance response calculation is performed in both cases to predict the resulting rotor critical speeds and response of the casing modes. The effect of the compressor case and supports caused the second critical speed to drop to a value close to the operating speed and not compliant with the requirements of the American Petroleum Institute (API) specification 617 7th edition. A combination of rotor, journal bearing, casing, and support modifications resulted in a satisfactory and API compliant solution. The results of the fully coupled model validated the transfer function approach.

Abstract:
The life of the people of a nation is not only affected by the availability and non-availability of petroleum product but also by the quality of the product made available. The purity and impurity of the available petroleum product impacts the physical health of people by affecting the environment in which they live in. To improve the testing procedures and enhance fuel quality standard, immediate attention should be paid to regulating some key parameters that are not in practice nowadays; in the measurement of PAH in diesel, only density and KV test is used in Nepal which is not sufficient methods to identify diesel adulteration. The Calculated Cetane Index by Four Variable Equation is not a discretionary method for articulating ASTM cetane number. Sample of diesel fuel were collected from different zone of Nepal and the collected sample were tested in the laboratory of Intermediate Technology Development Group, Nepal, Environment Assessment and Material Testing Division, Nepal, Nepal Bureau Standard and Metrology, Nepal Oil Corporation and produced the data of CI. The results show recovery at 10%, 50% and 90% volume at a given temperature. The calculation of minimum CI value is 32, then the recovery % is at 170, 205 and 269 which indicates lower density type, e.g., kerosene is added in diesel fuel. Lower the CI, higher the strength of kerosene and vice versa. The result shows the cetane index of diesel fuel in Birgunj (BRJ) group is maximum 42, minimum 30 and average was 38. Whereas Raxual (RXL) delivered diesel has an average 48 cetane value. In the view of cetane value, average 10 cetane value is decreasing in diesel fuel in BRJ group sample. In the Kathmandu valley, results were maximum 43, minimum 32 and the average 38. Applying the law of altitude, the calculated value of cetane index strength is at an average of 34. The value of calculated cetane index is lower in the Kathmandu valley than RXL by 14. This lower calculated value of cetane index indicates that there is about 50% adulteration in diesel fuel in Nepali fuel market. The equation is an accompanying tool for assessing cetane number when a result by Test Method D613 is not available and if cetane improver is not used. As a supplementary tool, the Calculated Cetane Index by Four Variable equation should be used with due regard for its limitations. Four-variable equation really saves the cost to calculate cetane index of diesel (ASTM D 4737). Therefore, the study recommends for the use of the equation rather than cetane engine to estimate to CN for diesel supplied in Nepal.Economic Journal of Development Issues Vol. 19 & 20 No. 1-2 (2015) Combined Issue, Page: 60-76
