Abstract:
Todays globalized network communication initiates new interactive formats, transforming not only the dissemination, but - increasingly - the production of news. The one-way flow of news from a news outlet to the audience has been replaced by a network structure. Following Castells concept of the network (1996) as the central model of information structures, I perpetuate this paradigmatic shift and suggest that networks also transform the professional journalism sphere in many world regions. A revised sphere of journalism is taking shape in which an increasingly global flow of news is evolving and a multiple platform structure of journalism is taking shape in which boundaries between traditional media outlets of print, radio, and television and between national and foreign journalism are blurring. Furthermore, I argue that a globalized journalistic network sphere is emerging which involves traditional journalistic outlets and bloggers, media activists, so-called citizen journalists, or user-generated content providers alike. These new journalistic spheres of connectivity establish new (and continuous) links between journalists, their sources as well as their audiences. This fundamental change creates new professional levels of connectivity on one hand and on the other, has severe strategic and organizational implications for the management of print, broadcast and online news outlets. Within this new network sphere of journalistic practice, the roles of journalistic outlets change. This work suggests a framework that helps to understand journalistic organization today, with innovative work structures based on digital technologies transforming the character and in effect substituting the model of top-down journalism models by a model that is far more complicated. I argue that within an evolving global news sphere, information flows are multidirectional. Decentralization and non-linearity become the key parameters defining news flows at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The character of this network in the journalism sphere is transnational, crossmedia, and cross professions. Based on results of thirteen qualitative interviews with media practitioners in Germany, the US and the UK, I argue that a new geography of journalism is taking shape in which journalistic outlets are being transformed into nodes. These nodes are arranged in a dense net of information gathers, producers and disseminators and the interactive connections among them constitute what I want to call network journalism.

Abstract:
The development of digital networks has allowed the largest news media organisations to consolidate and centralise their publishing businesses in flourishing capital-city markets. This has resulted in a withdrawal from other less-viable markets, especially those which are geographically remote, and the subsequent emergence of the 'digital divide' with its attendant negative effects. This thesis proposes that the combination of technologies, theories and processes which has brought about the 'digital divide' can now be realigned to reverse those negative effects, and to enhance the possibility of focussed participatory communication taking place within and between those previously less-viable markets. This enhanced participatory communication - which I have named 'integrated journalism' - brings with it measurable and positive effects, generally known as community capacity building effects, which lead to better outcomes for the members of enhanced communities, a more innovative and flourishing approach to life and business, and a more innovative and forward-looking atmosphere within enhanced communities. Two new models are devised and presented: the first allows members of audience communities to learn and implement the process of publishing a community newspaper under the tuition of an experienced journalist; the second enables both journalists and audience members to measure and direct the effects of news publication within communities.

Abstract:
Studying the news sources used in data-driven journalism (DDJ) practices is the proposal of this dissertation. The theoretical approach includes classifications of news sources already discussed in journalism studies. Considering the contemporary context, which is modified by social and technological transformations, this study operates from the networked society and network journalism perspectives. The main point is to detect the use of journalism sources in news developed by DDJ techniques, which emerges in this scenario during the 2000’s. It analyzes 60 news records published by O Globo, The New York Times and La Nación, as traditional media, and Nexo, FiveThirtyEight and Chequeado, as the native ones. Combining the theory and the empirical study, it proposes a classification by types of sources of DDJ news: documentary file, statistics and reproduction. Through this classification, it aims to fulfill a gap found in the theoretical sources approach, which is superficially discussed in journalism until now, bringing the use of documents as a protagonist in this scenario.

Abstract:
This research proposes to study the appropriation of the Snapchat application through the UOL Portal for the production of journalistic content. The focus is on watching stories, which are narratives created from fragments of up to 10 seconds that disappear after 24 hours, produced by the UOL profile. For that, we selected the stories that were produced on politics and republished on the site TV UOL, totaling 28 videos with 657 fragments, called snaps. The empirical analysis was divided in two stages: one of quantitative character, which seeks to observe the occurrence of previously mapped elements in the snaps; and another qualitative, whose look falls on how these snaps are structured to create the stories. As results, we point out frequent elements such as the use of native snaps and the preference for videos versus other multimedia formats such as photos, texts and audios. We also note that stories do not follow a pattern and link different narrative formats, such as spot coverage, interviews, and backstage.

Abstract

The aim of our study was to examine the meaning of the social media Facebook for young people who are in the age of 16 to 25 years. We wanted to gain an understanding in the youths´ thoughts and beliefs of how Facebook exists and plays a role in their lives. As a result from this research, we discussed how social media might affect the future of journalism.

We formed our thesis based on research of the digital network society, social networks, the youth culture, and how the target group; the young people use and experience social media. We made a questionnaire for 36 high school students, and three of these participated in a focusgroup-discussion. We combined and analyzed the response from the questionnaire and the focus group in our final result, and discussed patterns and relations between the youngsters´ answers.

Our result shows that Facebook mostly is regarded to be a virtual meetingplace, where these young people can interact and communicate with each other. They mostly communicate with their friends from the real-life, and youths´ use Facebook as a tool when they want to find out what people in their surrounding do. The questionnaire result also shows that Facebook can be seen as an information channel, where the young people can get gossip and offer each other invitations to common events.

From this study, we can point out that the social network is practically of great importance in young peoples’ lives. The questionnaire of Facebook and how young people´s habits are affected implies that it is important to use the social network discussion while analysing the convergence between so called; "old" and "new media". Young people steer and direct the use of media, and that is the reason why the understanding about their thoughts of social media is significantly important. One could practically say that youngsters can affect the future of journalism, and the design and development of media.

Key words: young people, Facebook, social media, virtual communication, the convergence of media, digital network society, journalism

The New York Times (EUA); El País (Espanha).
This doctoral thesis studied the tensions inflicted upon journalistic practices by new manners of social intervention which are led by the so-called Occupy movement, with social networking websites as spaces of metabolization. Based on C. S. Peirce's Theory of Signs, it is argued that in language is the main function of journalism: to exercise a qualified mediation in the public space between the chaotic reality of events and the society, a result of its formation as a social, academic and professional field. So, the production of news stories is understood as a complex tangle of mediation that results in the semiosis of news, represented graphically by the scheme object/event – interpreting mind/journalism – sign/news. What follows from this perspective is the idea that journalism, in the condition of a system that produces meanings, is going through a systemic crisis caused by the interaction with other agents that compose the non-physical space Lotman calls semiosphere. That which journalism does not represent in its sign/news because of a semiosis that traditionally limits the hermeneutic power of events, as said by Quéré, now is signified by other systems and broadly shared in social networks, which threatens the part of mediator journalism has played throughput history. This reflection is based on inferences made during ethnographic movements carried out in the newsrooms of three reference newspapers: Folha de S. Paulo (Brazil); The New York Times (USA); El País (Spain). Also, together with this experience, the monitoring of phenomena such as the Occupy Wall Street movement, in the US, and the June Journeys, in Brazil, was a an attempt to understand their manners of articulation, mobilization and intervention. In the interface between journalism and the Occupy movements it is glimpsed, because of their dispute of meanings in the social networks, the proposition of the concept of network interpreter. At last, the need for journalism to reflect upon this crisis is argued, since it occupies the logical and transitory part of interpreter in the semiosis of news. This reflection would result in more complex manners of representing social conflicts as semiotic objects. The social movements, thus, should comprehend the constitution of the network interpreter so as to create strategies for promoting the debate about their demands.

Abstract:
With the popularization of mobile devices, more and more people watch the television programs while using these platforms to access the web, functioning as the second screen in the search for information about the attraction and opinions to share on social networks and websites where the attraction is in evidence. The research presented here reflects on how this convergence of multiple screens interferes with the production of meaning of messages and communication experience, with the focus the viewers while watching programs that are interacting in digital social networks Twitter and Facebook. More than that, how journalism understands that concurrent use, taking advantage of their favor or not the duplicity of information sources. Sports, entertainment, politics and everyday - a few days of news coverage of events in different proportions, patterns of national and international relevance, and four editors were analyzed. Comprise the study analysis of the 2013 Mardi Gras - parade of samba schools of São Paulo / SP and Rio de Janeiro / RJ and presentations of electric trucks in Salvador, FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 news from three national newscasts (Journal Today National Journal and Journal of Culture in abril/2014) and news coverage of the Journal of Culture, National Journal and Journal of the globe on the vote of the Civil Framework Internet by the Brazilian National Congress (março/2014). In all cases analyzed, the second screen is little explored or ignored by television. The difficulty is not in publishing, while we analyze specific long as politics and sports, to general. Nor is it the size of the event, considering the Confederations Cup, which attracts worldwide attention. The television station also involved does not mean much in the digital social awkwardness process. The limitation lies in the role that communicators attach to Information Technology and Communication, using the priority to support expansion of the message and not as allies to the proposed renewal of the narrative of newscasts that will be consumed in the company of secondary screens.

This thesis aims to identify and understand permanence and ruptures in journalism practices and values through the discourse analyses on its very own crisis. It follows from a dialectical view which understands the present moment as an opportunity for a critical activity remake, based on praxis concept and exploring profession's potential to produce knowledge through digital social networks. Therefore, it embodies a theoretical contribution from Marcuse (1978), Genro Filho (1986, 1989), Kosik (2002) and Sánchez Vazquez (1977). Is starts defining journalism and its ideals from a dialectical conception, stressed by the context of crisis and marked by the weakening of the economic and symbolic power of traditional media. In the meantime, the new resources offered for the practice of journalism through the Internet and digital social networks create alternatives to transform the activity and its social uses. Assuming this tension creates conditions to denaturalize certainties, even journalists observation may be affected. For the research, semi-structured interviews were arranged to eleven professionals from three reference newspapers: El País (Madrid, Spain), Folha de S.Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil) and Zero Hora (Porto Alegre, Brazil). The insights collected in the interviewees' speeches are classified through the categories of reiteration, which includes aspects related to the reinforcement of practices and consolidated values of journalism; creation, which encompasses new practices and values; and suspension, which fits movements of experimentation, doubt and critical questions by journalists. At the end, findings emphasize the use of reiteration and suspension on observed essays, in detriment of creation.

The transformations undergone by radio journalism in the current context of media convergence support this dissertation, which aims at investigating the interactive strategies adopted by informative radio through digital social networks. So, were chosen as research objects CBN and Gaúcha radio stations, both offering programs primarily to radio journalism and strong presence in the online environment, the first with national reach and the second with regional, restricted to the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The study is developed from the application of a mixed research methodology, based on a literature review that goes through the concepts of convergence, radio communication, interactivity and digital social networks. To the theoretical course was added a Comparative Case Study, which was based on evidences gathered through the consultation documents, direct observation of websites and profiles on social networking sites, in-depth interviews and even the content analysis, method applied to sound and digital content from both stations. The intersection of theoretical discussions and empirical research data obtained allowed reflection on the appropriateness of issuing the convergence process, indicating different levels of adaptation. The report also pointed for a wide appreciation of digital environments by analyzed radio stations, especially social networking sites. These spaces, however, are mainly used to extent broadcast content. The interactivity with listeners, understood from the notion of reciprocity, was revealed in the background, demonstrating that although inserted in the digital ecosystem, the radio does not have full mastery of new interactive tools enabled by information and communication technologies.

A picture of « French fries coated with chocolate », a « sunset » picturing saturated colours near Puerto Natales, Chili… This PhD thesis studies the representation of pictures posted on « Social Networks » by the Agence France-Presse – mainly Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr – and examines the transformations and mutations of photojournalism through “digitization”. This work is structured around two axes. A semiotics approach allows first to understand how photojournalistic contents play on faith and belief in the media; these contents and pictures play on the norms and expectations linked to the representations of truth. We then studied the representation of press photography through a genealogical approach; interrogating the notion of banalité, this approach underlines the complexity of “digital” mediations. These mediations are caught between the requisitioning power of “industries du passage” and the adaptation of AFP’s informative speech. The interdisciplinary and integrative approach offered in this PhD allows to prove that digital mediations are only understandable as the correlation between an economy of devices and the development of unusual iconic lives

Abstract:
This work emerged from the interest in studying the increasing use of information and communication tools available on the Internet for strengthening the political activism online and offline. To verify the characteristics and specificities of this new type of collective action and its relation to the question of mediatic visibility, we have chosen as the empirical object the electronic discussion group LGBT National Alliance, created by the Brazilian Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite and Transgender (ABGLT), which has articulated and consolidated the largest LGBT network in Latin America. The comprehension of the functioning mode of this network and its strategic actions required the theoretical and conceptual supply of social networks, collective action, repertories of action and mediatic visibility applied to the practices of interaction and communication of LGBT movements observable both in digital platforms as well as offline activities. Due to the specificities of this object, the empirical study was based on two complementary methodological approaches: content analysis and virtual ethnography. The first one guided the structural analysis and the analysis of the discussion group dynamics, as well as data collection on topics that motivated larger participation, which concentrated on the years 2012 and 2013. The second one based the online participant observation of performances in the network and semistructured interviews carried out with members from all regions of the country. From these procedures, it was selected four representative case studies of the two main paradigmatic axes identified as the guidelines of the activism of the network: the political-institutional antagonism (conflicts with the evangelical countertop); and the mediatic antagonism (conflicts with traditional media). Among the conclusions of the research are: the repertories of action (on network, mediatic, cyberactivists) emerge as strengthening tactics of political activism, aiming at expanding its reverberation in public debate and in the political sphere; the search for mediatic visibility is an imbricated strategy in activist actions which covers the |intermedia| mobilizations on digital platforms and recurrent attempts of guiding journalistic vehicles; online and offline articulations, mobilizations and interventions are correlated and can be started either in spaces of mediated interaction as in the traditional political spaces and vice versa; the mobilization of occasional activists and other informal partners is a strategic practice to visualize and reinforce the mechanisms of pressure; the discussion group is potentially more active in civil conversations for purposes of exchanging information, conjuncture analysis, specialized consulting, planning and evaluation of actions; cyberactivism is notably more successful in situations in which the Internet plays a relevant role in the dissemination of alternative informative channels for the collective awareness and engagement; the association of political activism to a number of mediatic repertories, online and networked has contributed to increasing public visibility, the set of alliances and the support of society around anti-homophobia struggles in the country.

Abstract:
This research investigates the Design domain especially on information visualization (InfoVis) production to digital media through journalism, focusing on images’ visual rhetoric. Concerned with the advent of new media - that brought the viability of dynamic data onto visual representations – this study wants to contribute to an initial global debate (and particularly in Brazil) in view of the contemporary technologic scenario characterized by multimediality and growing popularity of new interactive and portable computational devices. For that, it does a theoretical study on information society; it presents the transition between old and new media, as well as the impact on journalism and, in consequence, on information visualization production by new media; and also, investigates the image field and information comprehension through visual rhetoric. Within this theoretical frame, the dissertation proposes a conscious and organized use of visual rhetoric for designers, with a taxonomy based on earlier researches. Finally, based on this proposal, this study analyses some usage cases, classifying information visualization produced by some brazilian and international media companies.

As the pace of publishing and the volume of content rapidly increase on the web, citizen journalism and data journalism have threatened the traditional role of institutional newsmaking. Legacy publishers, as well as digital-native outlets and aggregators, are beginning to adapt to this new news landscape, in part by drawing newfound value from archival stories and reusing older works. However, this trend's potential remains limited by technical challenges and institutional inertia. In this thesis I propose a framework for considering the news institution of the digital era as a linked archive: equal parts news provider and information portal, the linked archive places historical context on the same footing as new content, and emphasizes the journalist's role as news explainer and verifier. Informed by a theoretical, historical, and technical understanding of the web's structural affordances and limitations, and especially by the untapped networking power of the hyperlink, I suggest how publishers can offer an archive-oriented model of structured, sustainable, and scalable journalism. I draw from concepts and lessons learned in library and computer science, such as link analysis, network theory, and polyhierarchy, to offer an archivally-focused journalistic model that can save time for reporters and improve the research and reading process for journalists and audiences alike. This allows for a treatment of news items as part of a dynamic conversation rather than a static box or endless feed, revitalizing the news archive and putting the past in fuller and richer dialogue with the present.

Abstract:
Digitization of analogue everyday artifacts, i.e. when physical products are equipped with digital capabilities, has a profound impact on today’s society. Some examples of these digital innovations aimed at consumer markets are the “connected” car, the digitized television set, and in the near future, digitized IKEA furniture. Digital innovation provides endless opportunities for providing value adding products and services. However, in digital innovation there is a need to find new ways of organizing network activities, i.e. activities such as e.g. production and translation of knowledge and enrollment of actors. These activities need to embrace and build on the networked aspects and the complexity inherent to digital innovation. This requires network activities that can overcome challenges with the ambiguous and messy characteristics of digital innovation. In this thesis, I propose that the theoretical perspective of network orchestration can enlighten fruitful ways to address challenges that are encountered when organizing network activities in digital innovation. Inspired by practical challenges with digital innovation, as well as contemporary calls for research within IS, this thesis investigates: How can network activities be orchestrated in digital innovation? Two cases of digital innovation aimed at consumer markets are studied. The first case concerns the digitization of the newspaper. The second case regards the digitization of door locks. Literature about digital innovation is used to understand the context of the studied phenomenon. Furthermore, theories about network orchestration as well as activities in innovation are used as a theoretical framework to help answer the research question. The thesis is based on an interpretative perspective where a multi-method approach has been applied to address the research question. The contribution is divided into two different parts. The first part presents four categories of empirically derived network activities that address socio-technical challenges with organizing digital innovation. The second part is a proposed model detailing orchestration of network activities in digital innovation. The model is based around the four suggested categories of network activities: (1) Supporting flexible innovation networks, (2) Production and translation of layered architectural knowledge, (3) Addressing heterogeneous user communities, and (4) Harnessing generativity to leverage value. The categories of network activities can be viewed as building blocks for the orchestration process. By emphasizing both a proactive and a reactive way of orchestrating digital innovation, the model proposes a means for organizations to address the ambiguity and complexity of digital innovation.

Abstract:
New media technology continues to provide journalists with sophisticated tools that are changing news processing and gathering. Economics journalists in particular have grasped the possibilities offered by new media technologies. Thus, this paper offers a theoretical and practical look at how new media technologies have impacted the production and processing of economics news in South Africa, with a particular focus on Fin24.com which is South Africa's biggest online economics news publication. Using qualitative research methods and the case-study approach, this thesis documents the impact of new media technologies on the production of economics news. It draws on Witschge and Nygren's (2009) framework which describes how new media technologies change the nature in which news is produced and processed. New media technologies in this study will refer to the Internet, particularly search engines like Google, social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, Blogs as well as mobile telephony. Economics journalism will here refer to all coverage of economics and business-related news. This is because the case study (Fin24.com) covers both business and economics journalism by strict definition. Findings reveal that these new media technologies have not only changed economics newsgathering and processing but also journalistic routines. The findings generally show that new media technologies make it easier for economics journalists to produce the news quickly and efficiently. Indeed, the most distinguishing characteristic of new media is its overall speed, which is both challenging and attractive. The findings also reveal that new media technologies within a newsroom can be problematic in a number of ways, mainly raising issues of accuracy and credibility thus challenging the profession of economics journalism more than ever.

Abstract:
The enhanced discursive opportunity structures that the Internet enables has inspired a momentous revolution in the Nigerian media landscape. This dissertation chronicles the emergence and flowering of the citizen and alternative online journalism of the Nigerian diasporic public sphere located primarily in the United States. Using case-study research, it profiles the major diasporan online citizen media outlets and highlights instances where these geographically distant citizen media sites shaped and influenced both the national politics and policies of the homeland and the media practices of the domestic media formation. The study makes the case that while it is customary in the scholarship on sovereignty, state-civil society relations, and diaspora studies to emphasize domination and one-dimensionality in cultural flows, the participation of members of the Nigerian digital diaspora in the politics and discourses of their homeland, from their exilic locations in the West through the instrumentality of online citizen media, illustrates that citizens, especially in the age of the Internet, are not mere powerless subjects and receivers of informational flows from the institutions of the state and corporate mass media but can be active consumers and producers of informational resources and even purveyors of political power in ways that amply exemplify trans-local reciprocality. It also argues that the Nigerian diaspora media might very well be a prototype of an evolving, Internet-enabled, trans-local, and mutual informational and cultural exchange between the educated deterritorialized ethnoscapes of peripheral nations whose exile in the West endues them with symbolic and cultural capital and the private institutions and governments of their homelands. The study recommends a comparative study of the online citizen journalism of Third World virtual diasporas in the West.

Abstract:
This study explores how Chinese digital journalism transformation in the context of media convergence. The research asks the following questions: How is the Chinese journalism transforming according to the changes of journalism production and users’ consumption in the digital era? Is there any difference between traditional journalism and digital journalism considering the journalistic quality in China? How does digital journalism influence the work situation of Chinese journalists? The research was conducted by mix qualitative and quantitative design and it is based on 8 in-depth interviews with Chinese journalists and an online questionnaire (n=300) on consumers. By conducting these two different kinds of empirical data, it could present the reaction of digital journalism transformation from both journalists and users. Based on the theoretical framework of media convergence and journalistic quality, the analysis was carried out on three levels: A) Chinese journalism transformation during the media convergence; B) Journalistic quality within the Chinese journalism industry; C) The impact of digital journalism on journalists work situation. The main results showed that digital transformation is under the media convergence trend in China. From Chinese users’ side, the consumption of digital journalism production is accessible and traditional journalism was more trustworthy than digital journalism. From Chinese journalists’ side, the journalistic production in traditional journalism has the journalistic quality which is more accurate and authoritative. In the digital era, the journalists working life were busy and the new media workers were more stressed than journalists in traditional media organizations.

Abstract:
How does television news present the world to American viewers? This study employs a content analysis of selected international news stories reported by the four major American networks between October and December 1995 to answer this question. International news has been the target of much critique, which this study puts to an empirical test. Specifically, claims about unfairly negative coverage of the Third World were supported, but not in the entirety in which they are often voiced. Coverage of international events is primarily crisis-oriented and secondarily politics-oriented and focuses on events with American involvement. The prevalence of episodic international coverage and the corresponding lack of stories conveying substantive information makes television a less than ideal source to learn about the "big picture" in global events. Methodologically, this study uses new, more precise measuring techniques, including the often omitted visual analysis of newscasts and the concept of unifying story themes.

The development of web journalism or cyber journalism resulted in a change of route for traditional newspapers. The text structure, the approach of the subjects and even the role of the newspapers are under revision at this moment. On the other hand, there are also significant changes in news writing for the Internet. If, at first, the companies were limited to simply replicate for the Internet the content published in the newspapers, just transposing for the new medium the narrative techniques from the print journalism, the text for the web, in its following stages, started to acquire independence and to develop itself towards what would be considered its ideal form. This dissertation intends to examine the major changes in newspapers text after the emergence of the so-called cyber journalism and also aims to show the evolution process of the text written exclusively for the web. The starting point for the research is the analysis and comparison of texts from the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, in both printed and digital versions, and also from other selected examples in national and international press that helps to clarify these changes. The foundations of this study are: the theory of the creation process developed by Cecilia Salles, the theories of media presented by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin (Remediation: Understanding New Media), and studies conducted by researchers specialized in journalistic texts such as Ramón Salaverria, Concepción Edo and John Canavilhas

Abstract:

This study applied the uses and gratifications theory to determine how audience motives for using niche social network sites compared with motives for using popular social network sites. An online survey presented a single sample (N=554) with items measuring motives for using the popular social network site Facebook alongside items measuring motives for using the niche social network site Ravelry for comparison.

The results demonstrate that there is a significant amount of overlap between the motives for Ravelry use and for Facebook use. The motives of relaxing entertainment, expressive information sharing, habitual pass time, social interaction, cool new technology, and professional advancement emerged during separate factor analyses of both the Ravelry and Facebook use motive scales. New friendships emerged only as a motive for Ravelry use. The results also showed the most salient motive for Facebook use was social interaction where the most salient motives for using Ravelry were relaxing entertainment and new friendships. The strongest motive for using Facebook related to relationships maintenance, which supports findings of past research. In contrast, Ravelry use motives show members are seeking new relationships through the niche social network site. Implications of the significant differences between motives for using the niche social network site and the popular social network site are discussed. Additional research is suggested to refine the current conceptual definition of social network site and to classify social network sites.

Abstract:
The progress in the computing and communication industries together with the fast evolution of the semiconductor industry has made possible advances in the communications field. These advances have been used by other related applications to improve the services that they bring about. On the other hand, business crimes have increased three digits orders of magnitude in one decade, making from 20% to 30% of small businesses fail. These conditions demand new solutions to make security systems more reliable and efficient. The present work combines ISDN as a network with a security system to create a security network (SECNET). It will create intelligent and distributed security devices that communicate information from different places to a main security office by using the ISDN lines available at the premises. This work also introduces a new idea of individual equipment protection.

Abstract:
This research work is carried out at a time when traditional journalism suffers in the world and its digital version is still in search of a sustainable business model. It is an approach to understanding the current situation in Peru to 2018, as a starting point to project your future, a baseline that analyzes the presence of traditional media that use the internet as a new channel and also of new ones Native digital news sources. The study focuses, based on a sample of facts and news, in identifying the main news sources of content of national journalistic interest used by the digital consumer, in characterizing them, classifying them and measuring their degree of acceptance according to the audience as an indicator of relative success. The work continues along the way of identifying the most relevant attributes through indicators “proxy”, in coherence to the theoretical framework and empirical evidence,” to respond what is the success of the audience due to ? It is concluded that the offer is highly atomized in more than 15,000 sources and that, however, it is only a little more than thirty that dominate the market with a highly fragmented audience, where traditional media are the main protagonists. The updating and globalization of the news content are relevant elements associated with success in audience, as well as the use of digital powers for distribution, highlighting hypertextuality and portability in mobile devices.

Haider, Najmi Ghani. "A digital neural network approach to speech recognition." Thesis, Brunel University, 1989. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7116.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents two novel methods for isolated word speech recognition based on sub-word components. A digital neural network is the fundamental processing strategy in both methods. The first design is based on the 'Separate Segmentation & Labelling' (SS&L) approach. The spectral data of the input utterance is first segmented into phoneme-like units which are then time normalised by linear time normalisation. The neural network labels the time-normalised phoneme-like segments 78.36% recognition accuracy is achieved for the phoneme-like unit. In the second design, no time normalisation is required. After segmentation, recognition is performed by classifying the data in a window as it is slid one frame at a time, from the start to the end of of each phoneme-like segment in the utterance. 73.97% recognition accuracy for the phoneme-like unit is achieved in this application. The parameters of the neural net have been optimised for maximum recognition performance. A segmentation strategy using the sum of the difference in filterbank channel energy over successive spectra produced 80.27% correct segmentation of isolated utterances into phoneme-like units. A linguistic processor based on that of Kashyap & Mittal [84] enables 93.11% and 93.49% word recognition accuracy to be achieved for the SS&L and 'Sliding Window' recognisers respectively. The linguistic processor has been redesigned to make it portable so that it can be easily applied to any phoneme based isolated word speech recogniser.

Abstract:
Color management of Kodak Nexpress on Digital Printing NetworkThis thesis concerns the subject of color management in digital printing. The basic principle ofcolor management is to get the entire graphic production to result in a predictable and accurate endproduct. This control is mainly made by the use of ICC profiles. The purpose of this work was to help the company dpn to produce a well-functioning workflow fortheir two Kodak digital presses. The company wanted to get as good color matching between thetwo printing machines as possible, and get a good match with the existing standard values for offsetprinting as possible. The work was carried out by studying of relevant theory on the subject, which then was applied tothe practical work. The practical work consisted mainly of printing test charts, which was measuredand was the basis for the creation of the ICC profiles. The work proved to give a positive result. Measurements were made before the work began tocontrol how much color difference was at the time. After the creation and application of the newprofiles it was shown that color deviation have declined, both between the two printing presses andwith the current standard. Deviation fell below the targets the company had set up in advance, butdid allow for further improvements in their places.ConclusionsThe report shows that the objective of the two Kodak Nexpress to print with a color differenceunder the pre-determined values could be achieved with good margin. Moreover, it was found thatthe objective of the two Kodak Nexpress to simulate the default values for offset printing wasachieved, with the exception of a few color values.

Mouton, Francois. "Digital forensic readiness for wireless sensor network environments." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24955.

Full text
Abstract:
The new and upcoming field of wireless sensor networking is unfortunately still lacking in terms of both digital forensics and security. All communications between different nodes (also known as motes) are sent out in a broadcast fashion. These broadcasts make it quite difficult to capture data packets forensically and, at the same time, retain their integrity and authenticity. The study presents several attacks that can be executed successfully on a wireless sensor network, after which the dissertation delves more deeply into the flooding attack as it is one of the most difficult attacks to address in wireless sensor networks. Furthermore, a set of factors is presented to take into account while attempting to achieve digital forensic readiness in wireless sensor networks. The set of factors is subsequently discussed critically and a model is proposed for implementing digital forensic readiness in a wireless sensor network. The proposed model is next transformed into a working prototype that is able to provide digital forensic readiness to a wireless sensor network. The main contribution of this research is the digital forensic readiness prototype that can be used to add a digital forensics layer to any existing wireless sensor network. The prototype ensures the integrity and authenticity of each of the data packets captured from the existing wireless sensor network by using the number of motes in the network that have seen a data packet to determine its integrity and authenticity in the network. The prototype also works on different types of wireless sensor networks that are in the frequency range of the network on which the prototype is implemented, and does not require any modifications to be made to the existing wireless sensor network. Flooding attacks pose a major problem in wireless sensor networks due to the broadcasting of communication between motes in wireless sensor networks. The prototype is able to address this problem by using a solution proposed in this dissertation to determine a sudden influx of data packets within a wireless sensor network. The prototype is able to detect flooding attacks while they are occurring and can therefore address the flooding attack immediately. Finally, this dissertation critically discusses the advantages of having such a digital forensic readiness system in place in a wireless sensor network environment. Copyright

Abstract:
Collegiate newsrooms serve two functions: to provide news and information to their campuses and to provide hands-on career preparation for student journalists. Student media professionals face having to do the latter in a way that keeps up with changing demands on entry-level employees, influenced by evolving technology and role consolidation within professional media. This study provides perspective from recent graduates with student media experience on the skills they felt most confident in upon graduating, where they gained those skills, and how they feel their student media experiences prepared them for the workplace. Using Everett Rogers’ theory of innovation diffusion to frame the issue, results show that student media professionals must recognize their roles as the change agent in shaping and pushing the opportunities to develop digital skills expected of entry-level journalists.

Abstract:
The digital media landscape has fundamentally changed the way audiences consume and share content, creating many opportunities and challenges for news companies and organizations of all types (private, public and non-profit). This research investigates how the latter have gained the ability to produce and distribute journalistic-like content through their owned channels, thus circumventing journalists and engaging with their audiences directly. It shows how digital media have altered the manner in which news about organizations is disseminated, and, subsequently, the roles of PR practitioners and journalists. Through a series of interviews with seasoned experts in these two competing and collaborating fields, this project provides insights regarding the erosion of journalists’ gatekeeping role and the advent of PR practitioners as content creators. It supports prior research regarding the value of reciprocity between journalists and PR practitioners and offers orientations as to the future of these two professions in the context of the digital media landscape.

Abstract:
Comics Journalism (CJ) is a relatively recent way of reporting news, though it has its own tradi-tions and configuration. The Internet expands the possibilities of production and publication for CJ works, so that in virtual media these initiatives tend to multiply. This research aims to identi-fy and analyze the defining elements of online Comics Journalism through the Cartoon Move-ment (CM) website. CM is an international, independent and collaborative platform for the pub-lication of political cartoons and comics journalism. In order to better capture the website as a whole, our analysis is divided into three stages: the institutional, the commercial and the editori-al. The two first stages deal with the main sections of the site, Home, Newsroom, Cartoons, Comics and Projects; for the third one, we apply content analysis to the comics reports pub-lished on the website. Our findings indicate that the main characteristics observed in our object – independence, promotion of journalistic values, diversity of voices, collaborative prodution and internationalization – are only possible thanks to the interdependent relation between the editorial, the institutional and the commercial aspects in the organization of the website.
