Knowlton, Steven, and Bill Reader. Moral Reasoning for Journalists. 2nd ed. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400687396.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the fact that the public’s trust in the news media is at historic lows, despite the fact that hardly a day goes by without another report of unethical behavior by news professionals, journalists and teachers remain dedicated to ethical issues—perhaps more so now than at any other time in history. News companies are developing rigorous codes of conduct; journalists and editors are vigorously reporting on ethical lapses by their peers, and many journalism schools are creating standalone courses in journalism ethics and hiring faculty members who are devoted to ethics research and instruction. Using more than two-dozen actual cases from around the world to examine and apply those principles of ethical journalism, Knowlton and Reader suggest an easy-to-follow, commonsense approach to making ethical decisions in the newsroom as deadlines loom. Moral Reasoning for Journalists serves as an introduction to the underpinnings of journalism ethics, and as a guide for journalists and journalism teachers looking for ways to make ethical choices beyond going with your gut.

Full text
Abstract:
The term “secularism” stands as one of the most multivalent phrases in the contemporary global political lexicon. Mutually irreconcilable definitions of the term exist side by side in popular, journalistic, and even scholarly discourse. In an effort to reduce the confusion, this chapter suggests that the term “political secularism” be employed in contradistinction to “secularity,” “secular humanism,” or usages that equate secularism with atheism. It is argued that the fundamental principles that undergird political secularism have a lengthy and complex genealogy in Christian political philosophy, be it of the Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, or Reformation periods. These ideational taproots inform and tincture the modern political concept of secularism in a variety of intriguing ways. They have also resulted in contemporary political secular projects that are at once divergent from one another, in flux, and constantly evolving.

Abstract:
If the journalistic media are to be able to effectively perform their essential democratic tasks of shaping public opinion and controlling state power, they must be independent of the state. At the same time, this same state must guarantee a diverse range of media and inform the public about its activities. This tension is exacerbated in the Internet age, in which expensive journalistic content production is considered less and less secure. As a result, the state's duty to safeguard media pluralism, for example by organizing a public service system or other support measures, and to carry out active public relations work is updated. This in turn increases the danger that the state will influence media activity or become a media provider itself. What limits the state has to observe in this context is elaborated in this book on the basis of a cross-media genre constitutional and international law analysis of the principle of state independence of the media.

Montgomery, Bruce P. Richard B. Cheney and the Rise of the Imperial Vice Presidency. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216008767.

Full text
Abstract:
On taking office in 2001, Dick Cheney crowned himself the first imperial vice president in the nation's history, transforming a traditionally inconsequential office into a de facto fourth branch of government. Taking a less journalistic and personal approach to Cheney than previous biographers, this critical new biography shows exactly how Cheney engineered his arrogation of vast executive powers—and the dire consequences his power grab has had and will long continue to have for the office of the vice presidency, the balance of powers, the Constitution, geopolitics, and America’s security, strength, and prestige. Taking advantage of the administration’s global war on terrorism, a president inexperienced in matters of war and peace, and a Republican Congress that rated party power above institutional prerogatives, Vice President Cheney moved with astonishing speed and energy to assume a dominant role on the national and international stage as the effective president-in-proxy of the United States. Cheney asserted that all constitutional checks and balances and all individual liberties under the Bill of Rights are subservient to the president's powers as commander-in-chief in confronting international terrorism. Although former administrations had made power grabs in the past in times of national crisis, no president-and certainly no vice president-has ever exerted such sweeping claims of executive power on so many fronts in violation of the bedrock principles of the Constitution.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how popular culture has portrayed professionalism's key tenets. Apart from questioning whether journalists are true professionals (or even should be professionals) scholars have been particularly interested in the role of “objectivity” in journalism and in the practice and philosophy behind journalism ethics. In popular culture, so-called objective reporting is shown to be deeply problematic and is often implicitly equated to a lack of passion and commitment. Still, professional values do have a place as ethical dilemmas are brought to dramatic life and journalists who violate the public trust suffer the consequences of their misdeeds. Indeed, pop culture reinforces many of the critiques of professionalism—hard, cold reality trumps principles taught in school; reportorial objectivity is difficult to achieve; and ethical choices are fraught with unforeseen consequences.

Abstract:
The evolution of ethical standards for librarians parallels the development of librarianship as a profession. Our most important professional values have been tested and debated in the course of formulating and adopting our codes of ethics. This book includes historical precedents and current examples of ethical issues facing the profession. It looks broadly at the many arenas in which librarians face ethical choices, helping practitioners identify an ethical dilemma and providing guidance on how to respond, how to separate personal belief from professional responsibility, and how to make exceptions in a principled way. Where appropriate references are included to the codes of ethics of other professions: journalists, booksellers, and lawyers.

Murphy, Larry G. Sojourner Truth. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216016298.

Full text
Abstract:
This simple narrative of an extraordinary life explores the power of a disinterested commitment to right and truth. Sojourner Truth: A Biography traces this remarkable woman's life from her birth through adulthood and to her death in 1883. Drawing from public pronouncements, personal correspondence, and journalistic accounts of key historical actors, it follows her extraordinary career and sets the events of her life in the larger context of U.S. social and political history. The years during which Truth lived bore witness to tremendous social and religious ferment in the United States, including, of course, the Civil War. Truth was directly involved, indeed an influential figure, in many contentious issues of the period, from slavery and abolition to religious revivalism, women's rights, temperance, racial reconciliation, and more. Her story serves as a prism through which readers will better understand how these complex matters were adjudicated in 19th-century America. More than that, her life demonstrates what courage, character, and principle can accomplish against all odds.

Abstract:
George Eliot’s style developed during her early years as an exceptionally cultured journalist, translator, and editor, building a relation with her readers that rested on the authority of her wide-ranging scholarly and scientific references. But she also cautioned her readers about the limits of learning, and the need to locate knowledge in the context of sympathy. When she turned to fiction with the publication of Scenes of Clerical Life in 1857, she continued to build on these principles. An analysis of Middlemarch demonstrates that the flexible style of her mature writing continues to rest on a dazzling breadth of knowledge, coupled with an acknowledgement of the authority of feeling, and the moral responsibilities that are inseparable from our shared humanity.

Huebert, Jacob H., ed. Libertarianism Today. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400678660.

Full text
Abstract:
This engagingly written introduction examines modern libertarianism and its answers to today's most pressing issues—the economy, war, health care, and more. As government grows by leaps and bounds, libertarianism is receiving more attention than ever. Written from a contemporary perspective by an attorney and law professor who is also an award-winning journalist, Libertarianism Today provides an engaging introduction to the movement's ideas and people, serving as a jumping-off point for readers who want to know more. Beginning with the general libertarian principle that one person cannot initiate force against another, even if that person is part of the government, the book examines the implications of this principle for a wide range of contemporary issues: war, health care, personal liberties, economic policy, monetary policy, and intellectual property rights. It introduces the people behind the libertarian movement and explores the strategies—including education, activism, and litigation—libertarians are pursuing to advance their ideas. By laying out the current state of the movement, author J. H. Huebert shows how, even as it gets more mainstream-media exposure than ever, today's libertarian movement has only become more radically opposed to the Washington DC status quo.

Holmes, Andrew R. Union and Presbyterian Ulster Scots. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198736233.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the relationship between literature and union among Presbyterian writers in nineteenth-century Ulster. It examines the work of the poet William McComb and the journalist James McKnight, who together were responsible for the publication of The Repealer Repulsed (1841), a collection of reportage and literary fancy written in response to Daniel O’Connell’s campaign to repeal the 1800 Act of Union. Their various publications employed a shared Ulster–Scottish Presbyterian heritage to express opposition to the imposition of English Protestant forms and principles, and to highlight the importance and distinctiveness of Presbyterian Scots and Ulster-Scots within the United Kingdom. It demonstrates that Presbyterian writers saw Robert Burns as only one part of a broader literary culture that they shared with Britain and that was usually expressed in standard English, included prose as well as poetry, employed a number of literary genres, and sometimes drew upon a shared Gaelic heritage.

Taulbee, James Larry. International Crime and Punishment. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400671173.

Full text
Abstract:
The basics of international criminal law, how it is actually enforced, and the arguments it has provoked are all introduced in a book that is as current as the headline news. International Crime and Punishment: A Guide to the Issues explores the many facets of this relatively new field of criminal law, an autonomous branch of law that concerns international crimes and the systems set up to handle individuals who are accused of committing them. As the author explains, international crimes include crimes against humanity, crimes against peace, war crimes, trafficking in human beings, drug trafficking, money laundering, arms trafficking, and smuggling of cultural artifacts. The laws may seem straightforward, but the system is not without controversy. As the author shows, the United States has opposed certain actions of the International Criminal Court, while other countries have objected to U.S. plans to refer persons accused of terrorism to military tribunals. Clearly and cogently, this work introduces the principles of international criminal law, its enforcement, and the conflicts that have arisen as a result. Journalists, policymakers, students, and educated citizens will find the book an essential tool for unraveling today’s news stories.

Steffen (Lead Author), Will. Australia's Biodiversity and Climate Change. CSIRO Publishing, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643098190.

Full text
Abstract:
Australia's unique biodiversity is under threat from a rapidly changing climate. The effects of climate change are already discernible at all levels of biodiversity – genes, species, communities and ecosystems. Many of Australia's most valued and iconic natural areas – the Great Barrier Reef, south-western Australia, the Kakadu wetlands and the Australian Alps – are among the most vulnerable. But much more is at stake than saving iconic species or ecosystems. Australia's biodiversity is fundamental to the country's national identity, economy and quality of life. In the face of uncertainty about specific climate scenarios, ecological and management principles provide a sound basis for maximising opportunities for species to adapt, communities to reorganise and ecosystems to transform while maintaining basic functions critical to human society. This innovative approach to biodiversity conservation under a changing climate leads to new challenges for management, policy development and institutional design. This book explores these challenges, building on a detailed analysis of the interactions between a changing climate and Australia's rich but threatened biodiversity. Australia's Biodiversity and Climate Change is an important reference for policy makers, researchers, educators, students, journalists, environmental and conservation NGOs, NRM managers, and private landholders with an interest in biodiversity conservation in a rapidly changing world.
