Abstract:

Abstract:
Bijdragen en Mededelingen betreffende de Geschiedenis der Nederlanden was and is a Dutch-Belgian project. Belgian, though in fact only Flemish, historians have edited and authored contributions. The share from the South has always been smaller than that from the North. Via a generally balanced composition of the editorial board and initiatives, such as comparatively structured special issues and forums, the journal aimed to restore the balance. Since the journal, especially in the South, was closely affiliated with university history departments, those of the universities of Ghent and Leuven in particular, the evolutions of this Belgian share therefore reflect general shifts in academia. Expansion of research financing brought about accretion, rejuvenation and feminisation of the stock of authors and editors alike. Other developments in historical scholarship from the past half century, such as the appearance of new journals and internationalisation of research, had an impact on the positioning of the journal and consequently on Flemish contributions and their authors as well.

Abstract:
The declaration of Belgian independence in 1830 constituted a major turning point in Belgian language history: French was almost instantly installed as the only official language in public offices and judicial cases, which left the majority of Flemish citizens unable to understand or reply to official documents. While the monolingual French authorities quickly recognized the necessity of providing Flemish translations of laws and decrees, numerous Flemish jurists and officials criticized these official translations for being inadequate, since they contained several errors in syntax and legal terminology. This criticism led to a flow of new translations and ideological commentaries, especially in newly created Flemish legal journals. My contribution seeks to point out the key role of these journals in the process of emancipation and standardization of the Flemish legal language and in the creation of a proper Flemish legal culture. My focus is on the first volume of the legal journal Rechtskundig Tijdschrift voor Vlaamsch-België (1897–98), which actively supported the coming into being of a Flemish legal language and identity. This journal published translations of important francophone judgements, annotated translations of laws and decrees as they appeared in the government journal Moniteur belge, and numerous discussions of jurists on the Flemish legal language.

Abstract:
Although the technology and the high standard of living make taiwan a modern country, the problem between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law does not disappear with the modern life. Mentalities do not develop as quickly as the progress of the society. The chinese people respect their traditions and their culture: to have respectful affection toward their parents, to attend to their old parents are a heavenly duty. Generation gap, cohabitation increase the gravity of this problem. Seventy-seven per cent of daughters-in-law enquired in this study think that this problem is "important" or "very important". How to resolve the problem? I think to live not far from her parents-in-law is a good solution, because the daughterin-law is independant, but at the same time, she can take care of them

Abstract:
In 1957, Tempo di Roma brings success to the Belgian novelist Alexis Curvers (Liège 1906-1992). His admirers still today do not understand why this lengthy masterpiece is his swansong. Going through Curvers’ archives has brought to light about 500 publications (1920-1992) in periodicals from Belgium, Luxembourg and France that show his literary, ideological and personal evolution. Tens of thousands of heretofore unpublished letters, sometimes very intimate, were kept among his papers and in several public collections. Reading them leads to more than 200 interesting or illustrious correspondents (such as Marguerite Yourcenar or Grace of Monaco). Their content reveals a multi-faceted Curvers who confides greatly in his poet friends (Paul Dresse, Marcel Thiry, Yves-Gérard Le Dantec, Vincent Muselli). Various samples, including all of his correspondence with his family (particularly the thousands of letters from his famous Hellenist wife, Marie Delcourt) and letters from patrons, translators, painters, actors, journalists, publishers, writers, intellectuals of all colours (Aline Mayrisch, Maurice Beerblock, Herman De Cunsel, Stéphane Audel, Denis Marion, Jacques Peuchmaurd, Henri Calet, Jean Madiran…) give light to his journey and explain the circumstances of the birth and death of his poetry journal, La Flûte enchantée (1952-1962). The links between Curvers and Italy, the painters (Ensor, Chirico, Marie Howet) and André Gide are also detailed here. The presentation and critical editions of two manuscripts, La vérité vous délivrera (written at the Liberation) and Curvers’ diary (1924-1961), along with his bibliography, add to our understanding of this tortured creator

On July 29th 1881, the law on the freedom of the press marked the starting point of an unprecedented development in the French written press which led to its playing what then became an essential role in the social, political and cultural life of all French people. Before long, the press in Puy-de-Dôme benefited from this development, to evolve in the same way. In parallel with the success crime reports brought to serialised fiction, these crime reports became one of the major commercial assets of this newly popular written press, and had done so in particular from the beginning of the 1860s and the founding of the Petit Journal. Newspapers would stop at nothing to show the readership what was involved; dispatches no longer sufficed. From then on it became necessary to go and see, investigate, reason things out and disclose information, with or without the collaboration of the judicial authorities. Indeed, crime has always aroused a wide range of emotions in people such as fear, disgust, curiosity, reprobation and fascination. In response to these emotions, the revelations of and verdicts given for criminal acts provided the press with an opportunity to endlessly praise or else to express criticism of the political and legal system, to show concern about the decline in moral values and to be scared of anarchistic threats and of monsters hiding in alleyways and fields. More than being simple informational or politicizing tools, newspapers, through crime reports, then became the indispensable relay of the questionings and convictions of society as a whole. The aim of this reflection is to highlight the specificities of this media representation of crime while insisting on the form it took in the provinces and on its evolution in the first few years of the Second Empire and the final hours of the Belle Époque

Abstract:
By doing a screen adaptation of novels - La vie criminelle d'Archibald de la Cruz (1953), El (1955), Le journal d'une femme de chambre (1964), Belle de jour (1967), Tristana (1969) and Cet obscur objet du désir (1977) -, Luis Buñuel intends to denounce the brakes that curb individuals and are an impediment to their desire. The genuine desire, which is often repressed by the unconscious mind, manifests itself in dreams and fantasies. Similarly, events that initially seemed to be the result of pure chance, are actually reflective of the character's unconscious. The film maker reveals the deadlocks of the moral, through a questioning process about the concepts of perversion and deviance - masochism, sadism and fetichism - to which the inhibition of impulses can lead. Nevertheless, the perverse characters often give precedence to the expectation over the achievement itself of the act, especially through set scenes. Time is an important factor, especially since it can lead to a wound healing, to a complete cure or, at least, to a remission

Abstract:
AbstractBuilding on a recent study (Shepherd et al. in Strategic Management Journal 38:626–644, 2017), this chapter highlights the importance of noticingopportunities as an initial step toward new venture creation. Unsurprisingly, there has been considerable interest in the processes of allocating attention to notice potential opportunities arising from changes in the external environment. We know a great deal about the role of top-down (i.e., based on knowledge and experience) processes of allocating attention to the environment in forming opportunity beliefs worthy of entrepreneurial action. However, in this chapter, we illustrate how bottom-up processes, whereby environmental changes capture entrepreneurs’ attention, shape opportunity identification. Building on the notion of guided attention, we detail an attention model of forming opportunity beliefs for entrepreneurial action that includes both top-down and bottom-up processes for allocating attention. This chapter explains how entrepreneurs can allocate their transient attention to identify potential opportunities from environmental changes. This chapter also describes how allocating sustained entrepreneurial attention influences belief formation about radicaland incremental opportunities requiring entrepreneurial action.

Abstract:
In this letter to the British Medical Journal on the use of shock treatment for mental disorder, Winnicott states his belief that the course of medical evolution has been interrupted and set back by the treatment of mental disorder by the induction of fits. He believes this treatment is a shortcut to psychotherapy and a way of doing psychiatry without knowing anything about human nature.

Abstract:
In this letter to the British Medical Journal, Winnicott draws attention to the danger that a state medical service could be forced by Parliament to accept osteopathy, homeopathy, and other practices that are not accepted by the profession on scientific grounds. The profession must actively support the right of the unqualified practitioner to practise, on his own responsibility, while at the same time absolutely protecting itself from the possibility of having its beliefs warped by political pressure.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: To build the skills of innovation, we must first establish a framework for the belief system that surrounds effective innovation practice. In building any belief system, sometimes outdated beliefs need to be replaced with better, more carefully researched ideas. One such belief, discovered in our research and elsewhere, is that creativity is innate and that great ideas arise through chance or happenstance. Background: One belief regarding innovation and creativity, discovered in our research and elsewhere, is the belief that creativity is innate. History has repeatedly shown this to be untrue, yet people still believe it. We have found within our research another belief is that innovation happens through random, unstructured processes -- that great ideas arise through chance or happenstance. However, participants also believed that innovation is a skill. If someone believes innovation is a skill but also believes innovation is innate, random, and unstructured, this disconnect presents obstacles for the training and development of innovation skills. Methodology: This research is based on a combination of background research and direct survey of innovators, educators, scientists, and engineers, in addition to the general public. The survey is used to illuminate the nature of significant beliefs related to creativity and innovation practice. Contribution: We examine the myths and truths behind creativity as well as the false beliefs behind innovation as we present a closed model for innovation and the key framing elements needed to build a successful, trainable, developable system that is the innovation mindset. And like any skill, creativity and innovation can be taught and learned using tools and processes that can be followed, tracked, and documented. If innovation is a skill, creativity should not re-quire magic or the production of ideas out of thin air. Findings: This paper identifies the historic nature of creativity as well as the general strategies used by innovators in implementing innovation practices and pro-poses a framework that supports the effective development of the innovation mindset. Recommendations for Practitioners: Apply the framework and encourage ideation and innovation participants to appreciate that they can learn to be creative and innovative. Start as early as possible in the education process, as all of these skills can be instructed at early ages. Recommendations for Researchers: Continue to gather survey data to support a refined understanding of the motivations behind the disconnect between innovation as a methodical skill and the beliefs in the use of random ideation techniques. Impact on Society: Transforming the understanding of creativity and innovation from one of mythical belief to one of methodical skill application will dramatically alter the lifelong impact of knowledge gained in support of global economic and environmental challenges. Future Research: A continuation of the recommended research paths and collaboration with other creativity researchers leading to improved methods for dissuading mythical beliefs toward formalized, systematic ideation and innovation practices. *** NOTE: This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, 18, 83-102. Abstract:
With the arrival of cyber physical world and an extensive support of advanced IT infrastructure, nowadays it is possible to obtain the footprints of design activities through emails, design journals, change logs, and different forms of social data. In order to manage a more effective design process, it is essential to learn from the past and understand, for example, what design tasks are actually carried out, their interactions and how they impact each other. In this paper, a computational approach based on deep belief nets (DBN) is proposed to automatically uncover design tasks and quantify their interactions. A DBN topic modeling with real-valued units is to learn a set of intrinsic topic features from a simple word-frequency based input representation. Evaluated using a design email archive spanning for more than two years, the proposed approach has achieved a much higher accuracy in identifying design tasks compared to a prevailing approach.

Abstract:
Introduced nearly 25 years ago, the paradigm of mass customization (MC) has largely not lived up to its promise. Despite great strides in information technology, engineering design practice, and manufacturing production, the necessary process innovations that can produce products and systems with sufficient customization and economic efficiency have yet to be found in wide application. In this paper, the state-of-the-art in MC is explored in order to answer the question of “why not?” and to highlight areas for specific research in the MC paradigm. To establish perspective for this work, we consider MC to be a product development approach which allows for the production of goods — after a customer places an order — which minimize the tradeoff between the ideal product and the available product by fulfilling the needs and preferences of individuals functionally, emotionally and anthropologically. Results of this research were generated by reviewing 88 papers from various journals that span three domains of interest (marketing, engineering, and distribution) and explore proposed methodologies, specific information inputs and outputs, proposed metrics, and barriers toward the implementation of MC. Qualitatively, we show that the lack of MC in application is due to two factors: 1) a lack of marketing tools capable of capturing individual needs that can be mapped to the technical space; and 2) a lack of information relation mechanisms that connect the domains of marketing, engineering, and distribution. In the end it is our belief that MC is realizable and that eventually it will emerge as a dominant paradigm in the design and delivery of products and systems. However, pursuing the opportunities for research presented in this work will hopefully speed this emergence.

Full text
Abstract:
A catastrophic furnace roll failure was observed in a continuous hot dip line. The failure occurred in the weld joining an end bell to a roll shell and resulted in the complete separation of the end bell from the roll shell. The roll had been in service for approximately 7 months before failure. Typically, rolls in this furnace roll position have a short life, less than 1 year. The roll shell and the end bell were made of high-temperature alloy. The journal was made of stainless steel. Inconel welding electrode was used as the weld filler material. The roll shell and the end bells were shrink fitted before welding. The welding process was flux-cored arc welding (FCAW). Upon completion of welding post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) was applied for 3 hours at 1093°C to the entire roll. To extend the roll life, a new design and a new welding method, electron beam welding (EBW) without filler metal, were proposed. To evaluate the effectiveness of the new design and the new welding process, four kinds of numerical analyses were conducted on the new design for both FCAW and EBW which included a weld residual stress analysis, a PWHT analysis, a heat transfer analysis, and a creep-fatigue analysis. Analysis results showed that the new design with EBW has lower stress and creep strain than with FCAW, which could improve the roll creep-fatigue life.
