Abstract:
A high-intensity ensemble piece centered on a manipulative, sexually voracious gay artist whose passing leaves a "family" both sanguinary and sentimental in its wake, Those Who Love Me... is a key work of our age. Celebrated stage and opera director Patrice Chééreau throws the viewer into a whirlwind of character and incident charting a railway journey to a tumultuous funeral in which everything——from heterosexual marriage, heroin addiction, father/son relations, transsexuality, and HIV infection——is dealt with in ways both moving and comic. In constant sound-and-image motion, Those Who Love Me is a daunting cinematic object that strongly resists conventional analysis.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the key images of perception of the novel “Krutoy marshrut” by E. Ginzburg and its English translation “Journey into the Whirlwind” by P. Stevenson and M. Hayward. It is noted that one important way to describe the special atmosphere in the so-called “camp prose” is the perceptual vocabulary, a means of depicting impressions and relat-ed experiences. The leading channels of perception, actualized in the Ginzburg’s work, are auditory and olfactory. Sounds and smells receive the additional semantic load in the text. They act as markers of the borderline of prison’s and “worldly” spaces, signals of changes in the heroine’s physical or emotional state (they are often precursors of violence), a source of important information (most often it is knocking), a means of updating the mode of memories (the smells are mainly used for this purpose). The linguistic means of expressing perceptual images is the hearing and smell vocabulary (loud and tiny sounds, knock, roar, clang, screech, scream, ringing, silence, etc.; stink, smell, fragrance, etc.) and detailed metaphors (zoomorphic, natural, musical), often based on the syncretism of perception (sound, smell, vi-sion). The English translation analysis indicates a rather high degree of equivalence in the perceptual imagery transmission, with replacement or transformation of the most important images not excluded. The study showed interpreting and transmitting the author’s metaphors and syncretic (audio-olfactory and visual-audio) images to be the most difficult for transla-tion. The transformations used by the translators are necessary for the English-speaking read-er’s understanding of the complex perceptual images of the confessional novel.

Abstract:
A whirlwind of developments have unfolded in the UK since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has subsequently instigated an intensely animated debate among British Muslim religious leaders about the contentious and sensitive topic of mosque closure, producing a rich and sophisticated spectrum of responses. These responses emerged within the dramatic global background of an imminent closure of Islam’s most cherished mosque to international pilgrims, namely the sacred precinct in Mekkah. The stakes were, therefore, high for British Muslim religious leaders considering mosque closure, facing the stark dilemma of compromising the sacrosanct status of the mosque and congregational worship in Islam or putting the lives of British Muslims in their hundreds of thousands at risk. This paper seeks to analyze the role of religious authority within the British Muslim community through the lens of the responses of the community’s religious leaders to the COVID-19 closure of mosques. It builds upon a Special Issue published by this journal on leadership, authority and representation in British Muslim communities. The issue of COVID-19 mosque closure in the UK presented an excellent case study for this paper’s analysis, manifesting as it does the dynamic way in which religious authority in the British Muslim community continues to evolve. This paper thus seeks to use this case-study to further enrich the literature on this topic.

Abstract:
We live in interesting times. Portents of impending catastrophe pervade the literature, calling us to action in the face of unmanageable volumes of scientific data. But it isn't so much data generation per se, but the systematic burial of the knowledge embodied in those data that poses the problem: there is so much information available that we simply no longer know what we know, and finding what we want is hard – too hard. The knowledge we seek is often fragmentary and disconnected, spread thinly across thousands of databases and millions of articles in thousands of journals. The intellectual energy required to search this array of data-archives, and the time and money this wastes, has led several researchers to challenge the methods by which we traditionally commit newly acquired facts and knowledge to the scientific record. We present some of these initiatives here – a whirlwind tour of recent projects to transform scholarly publishing paradigms, culminating in Utopia and the Semantic Biochemical Journal experiment. With their promises to provide new ways of interacting with the literature, and new and more powerful tools to access and extract the knowledge sequestered within it, we ask what advances they make and what obstacles to progress still exist? We explore these questions, and, as you read on, we invite you to engage in an experiment with us, a real-time test of a new technology to rescue data from the dormant pages of published documents. We ask you, please, to read the instructions carefully. The time has come: you may turn over your papers…

Abstract:
This thesis is the product of an Arts and Humanities Research Council Collaborative Doctoral Award, the result of which was the production of a catalogue of the Tableaux de la Révolution. Made up of some 500 prints, presented in four nineteenth century bound volumes, the Tableaux de la Révolution is part of the Rothschild Collection held at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. One of the key goals of the project was to create an online resource that is now publicly accessible by internet. The initial cataloguing was split between Claire Trévien, also a recipient of and AHRC CDA, which she held in the French Department at the University of Warwick and myself. We ‘tombstone catalogued’ some 250 prints each, analysing the following: date, the identification of printing method and style, identification of subject and theme, a description of the image, translation and description of the text, as well as the construction of a theme-based search engine. My own contribution was the first and fourth of the large volumes in which the prints are kept (accession numbers: 4232.1 and 4222). Additional background research has also been conducted for each print, extended upon in the final in-depth analyses of circa 30 prints on my part. The items which received this treatment under my individual care were acc. nos: 4222.7.4, 4222.9.8, 4222.10.11, 4222.13.16, 4222.14.17, 4222.21.27, 4222.35.44, 4222.47.61, 4232.1.13.27, 4232.1.19.40, 4232.1.23.46, 4232.1.42.83, 4232.1.43.85, 4232.1.43.86, 4232.1.46.92, 4232.1.48.96, 4232.1.52.104, 4232.1.52.107, 4232.1.57.113, 4232.1.69.142, 4232.1.70.144, 4232.1.80.164, 4232.1.83.170, 4232.1.84.171, 4232.2.24.38, 4232.2.31.50, 4232.2.31.51, 4232.2.35.61 and 4232.2.47.80 (http://www.waddesdon.org.uk/collection/special-projects/tableaux-paul). The work done at Waddesdon Manor also proved invaluable vis-à-vis my thesis. The study of the prints laid the groundwork for me to broaden my knowledge of prints as a visual medium. In addition to this, an exhibition of the Tableaux de la Révolution was held at Waddesdon Manor in summer 2011. Part of the impact of the final catalogue also included a public lecture and ‘hands-on’ session, which I co-hosted with Claire Trévien. The catalogue of the Tableaux de la Révolution may be consulted on the Waddesdon website at: http://waddesdon.org.uk/collection/special-projects/tableau.

Pearson, Claire M. "The whirlwind : mothers' experiences of parenting a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31287.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research was to generate a grounded theory of how mothers of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), experience parenting their child. Interviews were conducted with eight mothers who all had at least one child with ADHD who was under seven years of age. The period that had elapsed since diagnosis ranged from two months to four years. The interview data was analysed using the grounded theory method. Analysis revealed that the mothers' main task from pre- diagnosis to four years post diagnosis was to 'adapt' to their child. The mothers had to adapt to the effects of having a child with ADHD, they had to adopt new coping strategies and there was also found to be adaptation taking place in the wider systems, such as health and education. Findings suggest that there is a developmental trajectory of how mothers adjust to this disorder over time. Recommendations are made for the implementation of multi-disciplinary assessment for ADHD and the use of groups for mothers focusing on behaviour management, attachment issues and the building up of relationships between the mothers.

Abstract:
???Journey??? as a term in the dictionary, indicates a distance covered in travelling, usually by land, from one place to another. In my paper, ???journey??? becomes equal to life experience, consisting of time, space or place, and thoughts. I see my life as a linear journey, made up of many points, in different time and space, facing diverse scenes, causing various emotions, and creating distinct relationships with the world. My project deals with time, space and thoughts in my life???s journey. I have turned to the space of everyday life in order to explore its shifting physical, social and psychological dimensions. This is where I would locate my work in relation to Contemporary Art, where the relationship between the inner and outer world, between private and public, between art and everyday, are also the key issues. These are my truly personal experience of my stay in Australia, where I have been provided an opportunity to experience the differences in various ways. Since all experiences take place in time and space, the two categories provide a comprehensive framework, in which my thoughts have a place to occur and develop. In my real life experience, what I have been through is not only to confront the conflicts and the uneasiness, but also to understand the differences, and then to accept and get used to these until I have harmony in my heart.

In my drawings and animation, I create a representation of a culture that is instilled in me, yet foreign. The work is inspired from a childlike perspective to depict a personal primitive experience with the Korean culture. The subtleties of the animations are meant to reflect the quiet nature of Asian paintings and to allow the viewer to experience and interpret it as they choose. I want others to see without hearing words in an already noisy world.

Taner, Melis. ""Caught in a Whirlwind:" Painting in Baghdad in the Late Sixteenth-Early Seventeenth Centuries." Thesis, Harvard University, 2016. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:33493409.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the province of Baghdad changed hands between the Aq Qoyunlu Turkmen tribal confederation, the Safavids and the Ottomans. From the last decade of the sixteenth to the first few years of the seventeenth centuries, there was a florescence of art production in Baghdad, at a time when the province was under Ottoman rule. This dissertation focuses on a period of rivalry and exchange between the Sunni Ottoman and the Shiʿite Safavid dynasties in the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries and elucidates the appearance and disappearance of a lively, yet short-lived, art market in the frontier province of Baghdad. A close study of the corpus of over thirty illustrated manuscripts, often described as exhibiting an “eclectic” style, and produced in Baghdad within a decade, shows that there was a broadening base of patronage as well as an open market for the purchase of art. While scholarship on the art of the book in Baghdad considers the corpus of illustrated manuscripts solely from the perspective of an Ottoman “context,” this dissertation takes a broader, transregional perspective and studies the art market in Baghdad through the complex layers of Ottoman and Safavid relations. It questions notions of a “school” of painting and emphasizes movement and encounters instead. It also proposes that in the context of an early modern consolidation of imperial identity (represented purposefully distinctly through monumental architecture, painting, decoration, objects in the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal empires), Baghdad as a frontier province between the Ottomans and the Safavids challenges notions of cultural, ornamental and decorative idioms. Its hybridity is the very product of the “whirlwind” of affairs between the Ottomans and the Safavids. The dissertation begins with a study of Ottoman-Safavid relations from the last quarter of the sixteenth to the first quarter of the seventeenth centuries. Making use of an unpublished history of Baghdad along with other published and unpublished chronicles, it presents an overview of the complex relations between the two rival empires as well as between the center, Istanbul and the province, Baghdad. This sets the background to the following chapters. Chapter 2 concentrates on a group of single-page paintings produced in Baghdad, which have heretofore escaped scholarly attention. These paintings bespeak a broadening base of patronage as well as an increasing interest in collecting art. The following chapter concerns illustrated popular religious literature, which constitutes the majority of manuscripts produced in Baghdad. It raises questions on the use of models, repetition of compositions and production of illustrated manuscripts for the speculative market. The fourth chapter takes a different turn and concentrates on the patronage of one of the eminent governors of Baghdad, Sokolluzade Hasan Paşa (d. 1602). Focusing on the ambitious project of an illustrated universal history, which was composed for this governor by a Baghdadi author, this chapter deals with the conception of history in the province. The final chapter brings attention to a group of illustrated genealogies most likely produced for the open market. These Ottoman-Turkish genealogies place the Ottoman dynasty as the pinnacle of history. However, one early-seventeenth-century manuscript in Persian turns the genre on its head and presents a pro-Safavid view through text and image within a largely Ottoman genre. Alterations done to its text to then suit a possible Ottoman owner highlight the in-betweenness of Baghdad.

Taylor, Anne. "Sentimental Journey/Winter Journey: Araki Nobuyoshi's Contemporary Shishōsetsu." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/13310.

Full text
Abstract:
Senchimentaru na tabi fuyu no tabi or Sentimental Journey/Winter Journey, a photobook created and published by photographer Araki Nobuyoshi in 1991, documented two highly personal events of the photographer's life. The first section consists of twenty-two images of Araki's 1971 honeymoon with his wife Yōko Aoki, while the second section features ninety-one images and an essay documenting the last six months of Yōko's life in 1989-90. This thesis measures SJ/WJ against a Japanese literary tradition invoked by Araki in his opening manifesto: the shishōsetsu. A genre of writing from the early 1900's that read like a confessional or personal diary, the shishōsetsu was regarded as a `true' story insofar as it revealed a totally transparent `author' within a totally transparent `text.' Given these criteria, this thesis determines the success of Araki's SJ/WJ as a true-to-life autobiography.

Abstract:
When a large-scale fire, such as a town area fire by an earthquake disaster and forest fire, happens, there can be a fire whirlwind, which is a strong flow including strong flame and sparks. It is sometimes called a firestorm. Fire whirlwind is exposed to high heat, and possesses high heat itself. Therefore, the fire whirlwind is very dangerous. The whirlwind moves and promotes spread of a fire and may enlarge the damage rapidly. Various studies are performed about fire whirlwind, but the property and outbreak mechanism of the whirlwind are not elucidated enough till now. Therefore, in this study, we pay our attention to the flow that is a basic phenomenon of fire whirlwind, and examine the influence that a natural convection gives to outbreak and behavior of fire whirlwind by numerical computation. The numerical analysis performed three-dimensional calculation with analysis software FLUENT6.1. Firstly, a model of the fire domain is constructed. The model is referred from an example of large-scale fire at the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923 in Japan), and natural convection is observed for different heat flux. Then, it is analyzed in a similar model whether a whirlwind occurs or not, after natural convection is fully-developed with changing velocity of the air flow from the side. Furthermore, it is analyzed in a model in which a fire occurs at random whether a whirlwind occurs or not after natural convection is fully-developed with changing velocity of the air flow from the side. As a result of analysis, a whirlwind occurs. The whirlwind sometimes moves and extinct. Then, the influence that a natural convection gives outbreak of the whirlwind is evaluated with changing heat flux and velocity of wind.

Abstract:
Abstract The normal curvature approach model is a new milling method of machining complex freeform surfaces presented in this paper based on 5-axis CNC machines. For this milling model, its key is to optimize the CL-data of whirlwind milling tool so that the symmetric rotational surface, which is generated while the whirlwind milling tool rotates, can closely approach to the surface being machined. Then, this method evidently raises the material removal rate at the point of contact and efficiently improves the machining productivity. In the paper, a new-typed whirlwind milling tool with standard-sized circular cutters is introduced, and a special 5-axis CNC horizontal bed-typed milling machine is used in manufacturing the freeform surfaces. The tool path generation algorithm about normal curvature approach milling method and its typical examples are analyzed in detail.
