Abstract:
Purpose Collaboration facilitates competitive advantages. That’s the reason why every leader should be concerned with whether his or her part of the organization embraces collaboration or not. Collaboration in itself is an instrumental value, and it should be pursued as part of an organization’s enterprise-wide strategy, especially in merged organizations. Unfortunately, the natural inclination in merged organizations is for the merged entities to continue the past practice of independent, autonomous operations. When merged, the separate entities of the new organization naturally resist integration. The leader must infuse collaboration to enable knowledge sharing and the integration and employment of the new organization’s capabilities. The following discussion presents a roadmap to collaboration focused on the leader’s employment of seven critical practices. Design/methodology/approach Concept Paper Findings Scholarly study points to collaboration as an instrumental value. If it must become a value in the organization, then leaders must use seven practices as part of an enterprise-wide strategy and carefully follow the implementation of the seven practices until collaboration becomes a value and the natural instinct of the organization. Originality/value Leaders struggle with how to bring collaboration into an environment where inertial forces impede it. The following discussion presents a roadmap to infuse collaboration and grow an appreciation for it because this process will facilitate the development and implementation of goals, objectives and action plans for the organization. Seven practices are discussed and integrated into an operational design-like method just like the one commanders use to achieve victories in military campaign planning and execution.

As we all know UK Covid19 preparation was little clumsy and late to enforce, while people were getting locked down elsewhere in Europe, we were asked to do frequent hand washing. I worked and operated until 11th of March. Booked a basketball court on 14th March and played with my son, one to one, for a good hour. I saw another patient later in the afternoon and attended a birthday same evening. Walked back home and was absolutely fine. Next morning got up with dry cough, sore throat, fever and body aches and pain. There was no sinus issue, no running nose. Gradually and within a day developed loss of appetite and loss of taste. I knew I had the virus, called my manager cancelled all my appointments and operations for the next week.

Abstract:
Pharmacists who work in long-term care—or in any area of health care—are exposed to the health care system on a daily basis. While most of us recognize that the health care system has problems, especially at transitions of care, few of us appreciate fully how serious these problems can be. Certifying and accrediting agencies have encouraged health care providers to step out of their silos and work more collaboratively, and educators have emphasized understanding geriatric syndromes. A description of a personal journey through the health system—for both the patient and the caregiver—with two older individuals, this narrative discusses how difficult it is for patients to understand what's happening around them. It also discusses the clinical inertia in addressing geriatric issues and offers suggestions to health care providers facing similar situations.

Abstract:
Sinus of Valsalva Aneurysms are extremely rare cardiac anomalies. The sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) is a small dilatation caused by a separation between the aortic media and annulus fibrosus. Its may be either acquired or congenital. The right coronary sinus is most frequently affected. The most common complication being rupture. We present the case of a 12-year old girl with ruptured non-coronary sinus of valsalva aneurysm associated with ventricular septal defect , mitral regurgitation grade II and severe pulmonary hypertension. Echocardiography is sufficient to diagnose SVA, its complications, repercussions, and surgical options. SVA, even if asymptomatic, has potential risks of expansion, rupture, cardiac failure, endocarditis, embolism and sudden death. This justifies surgical correction, with a low mortality rate in both the short- and long-term. KYAMC Journal Vol. 10, No.-4, January 2020, Page 211-213

Abstract:
We report a rare case of Kartagener's Syndrome, congenital variety of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) with infertility. The patient exhibited the classical triad of which was elucidated by Manes Kartagener in 1933. The frequency of KS in the United States is 1 case per 32,000 live births. Situs inversus occurs randomly in half the patients with PCD; therefore, for every patient with KS, another patient has PCD but not situs inversus. Current nomenclature classifies all congenital ciliary disorders as PCDs in order to differentiate them from acquired types. KS is part of the larger group of disorders referred to as PCDs. Approximately one half of patients with PCD have situs inversus and, thus, are classified as having KS.Keywords: Immotile cilia syndrome; Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD); Situs inversus; Chronic sinusitis; Bronchiectasis.DOI: 10.3126/ajms.v1i1.2605Asian Journal of Medical Sciences Vol.1(1) 2010 p.16-17

Abstract:
Under increasing water scarcity, food production for an increasing population is a global challenge. Maintaining crop production under limiting water supply is a common problem in agriculture, which is best addressed by the coordinated efforts of geneticists, physiologists and agronomists. This special issue is a selection of oral and poster presentations at the InterDrought IV conference, held in Perth (2–6 September 2013). These papers provide a broad, multidisciplinary view on the way to develop improved cultivars in the face of water deficit, providing the conference highlight: an integration of views from different disciplinary angles, generating constructive debate that was not buried in disciplinary silos. More specifically, the topics covered deal with the challenge of adaptation implicit in genotype-by-environment interaction, bring new perspectives on root systems and water productivity, and review the challenges and opportunities provided by crop management, genomic and transgenic approaches to cultivar improvement.

Tucci, Christopher L., Allan Afuah, and Gianluigi Viscusi, eds. Creating and Capturing Value through Crowdsourcing. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198816225.001.0001.

Abstract:
Examples of the value that can be created and captured through crowdsourcing go back to at least 1714, when the UK used crowdsourcing to solve the Longitude Problem, obtaining a solution that would enable the UK to become the dominant maritime force of its time. Today, Wikipedia uses crowds to provide entries for the world’s largest and free encyclopedia. Partly fueled by the value that can be created and captured through crowdsourcing, interest in researching the phenomenon has been remarkable. For example, the Best Paper Awards in 2012 for a record-setting three journals—the Academy of Management Review, Journal of Product Innovation Management, and Academy of Management Perspectives—were about crowdsourcing. In spite of the interest in crowdsourcing—or perhaps because of it—research on the phenomenon has been conducted in different research silos within the fields of management (from strategy to finance to operations to information systems), biology, communications, computer science, economics, political science, among others. In these silos, crowdsourcing takes names such as broadcast search, innovation tournaments, crowdfunding, community innovation, distributed innovation, collective intelligence, open source, crowdpower, and even open innovation. The book aims to assemble papers from as many of these silos as possible since the ultimate potential of crowdsourcing research is likely to be attained only by bridging them. The papers provide a systematic overview of the research on crowdsourcing from different fields based on a more encompassing definition of the concept, its difference for innovation, and its value for both the private and public sectors.

Abstract:
Integrating Project Risk Management (PRM) into Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a multi-year journey and has long term value. ERM provides a holistic view to existing risks and overcomes the disadvantage of risk being managed in silos in PRM. The main aim of integration of two approaches is to mange risk from both macro and micro perspectives by exploiting opportunities while balancing the downside of risk. The chapter provides a fundamental understanding of what ERM is and its components and shows how PRM is a subset of ERM. Issues and opportunities in integrating PRM into ERM are discussed using real life examples. Furthermore, the chapter brings attention to formal and informal ways of integration and concludes by making six recommendations.

Abstract:
This chapter follows Eliza Bogan’s journey, and those of many thousands more, as they moved through the Mississippi River valley during the tumultuous years of 1863 and 1864. It begins with Bogan’s flight to the refugee camp in Helena, Arkansas, where her third husband, Silas Small, had gone to enlist in a regiment of the United States Colored Troops. But the upheaval of combat violence, especially during the 1863 Vicksburg Campaign, pushed Bogan and thousands of other refugees out of Helena and into other parts of the Mississippi River valley. The chapter then describes Bogan’s decision to join her husband’s regiment as a laundress and argues that positions like these opened up room for women in the Union army’s combat apparatus. This, along with the Union’s decision to resettle women and children on leased plantations in the region, as workers but also as occupiers of those plantations, reveals how deeply embedded all formerly enslaved people were in formal combat -- and in the Union army’s determined effort to defeat their former owners.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2020: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2020-14991.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Tilting-pad journal bearings are widely used in turbomachinery industry due to their positive dynamic properties at high rotor speeds. However, the exact description of this dynamic behavior is still part of current research. This paper presents measurement results for a five-pad tilting-pad journal bearing in load between pivot configuration. The bearing is characterized by a nominal diameter of 100 mm, a length of 90 mm, and a pivot offset of 0.6. Investigations include results for surface speeds between 25 and 120 m/s and specific bearing loads ranging from 0.0 to 3.0 MPa. Results of theoretical predictions are commonly derived from perturbation of stationary operation under static load. Therefore, experimental results for stationary operation including pad deflection under static load are presented first to characterize the investigated bearing. Measured results indicate considerable non-laminar flow in the upper region of the investigated range of rotor speeds. Second, dynamic excitation test are performed with excitation frequencies up to 400 Hz to evaluate dynamic coefficients of a stiffness (K) and damping (C) KC-model, and additionally, a KCM-model using additional virtual mass (M) coefficients. KCM-coefficients are obtained by fitting frequency dependent KC-characteristics to the KCM-model structure using least square approach. The wide range of rotating and excitation frequencies leads to subsynchronous as well as supersynchronous vibrations. Excitation forces are applied with multi-sinus and single-sinus characteristics. The latter one allows evaluation of KC-coefficients at the particular frequency ratio in the time domain. Here, frequency and time domain evaluation algorithms for dynamic coefficients are used in order to assess their special properties and quality. The impact of surface speed, bearing load, and oil flow rate on measured and predicted KCM-coefficients is investigated. Measured and predicted results can be well fitted to a KCM-model and show a significant influence of the ratio between fluid film and pivot support stiffness on the speed dependent characteristic of bearing stiffness coefficients. However, the impact of this ratio on damping coefficients is considerably lower. Further investigations on the impact of oil flow rates indicate that a significant decrease of direct damping coefficients exists below a certain level of starvation. Above this limit, direct damping coefficients are nearly independent of oil flow rate. Results are analyzed in detail and demands on improvements for predictions are derived.

In InSITE 2021: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences. Informing Science Institute, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4779.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: This paper, although conceived earlier than the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic, addresses the problem of informing agility as part of organizational agility that has become a rather important issue for business survival. Background: While the general issues of business informing, and business intelligence (BI) in particular, have been widely researched, the dynamics of informing, their ability to act in accord with changes in business and preserve the key competencies has not been widely researched. In particular, the research on BI agility is rather scattered, and many issues need to be clarified. Methodology: A series of in-depth interviews with BI professionals to determine relations between organizational agility and BI agility, and to round up a set of key factors of BI agility. Contribution: The paper clarifies a candidate set of key factors of BI agility and gives ground for future research in relations with areas like corporate and BI resilience and culture. Findings: The interview results show the relations between organizational changes, and changes in BI activities. BI has limited potential in recognizing important external changes but can be rather helpful in making decision choices and detecting internal problems. Lack of communication between business and IT people, existence of data silos and shadow BI, and general inadequacy of organizational and BI culture are the key factors impairing BI agility. Recommendations for Practitioners: There are practical issues around BI agility that need solving, like the reason-able coverage of standards or creation of a dedicated unit to care about BI potential. Recommendations for Researchers: The research is still in its starting phase, but additional interesting directions start to emerge, like relations between BI agility, resilience and corporate agility, or the role of informing culture and BI culture for BI agility issues. Impact on Society: Agile business, especially in times of global shocks like COVID-19, loses less value and has more chances to survive. Future Research: Most likely this will be focused on the relations between BI agility, resilience, and corporate agility, and the role of informing culture and BI culture for BI agility issues. Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Turning an organization to an effective data driven decision making is vital factor to have and achieve digital transformation journey smoothly and successfully in the Energy sector, in which the energy industry has been trying to achieve the complete cycle Listen, Understand, effect and Decide rightly and quickly across the whole value chain such as HR, Finance, legal and contracts, operations, etc. since several decades where the software solutions were not in the priority list of the industry special the operations for many reasons, which created a serious of concequences which the industry is suffering from now such as listening carefully to the operations, understand the exact needs no matter how much we might save even if it’s 1 USD or 1 minute but do it correctly first time will save hours and millions later, silos in the organizations, distracted technologies not integrated, limitation of the technologies capabilities, people skills and compenetencies and the expectation the has been always set wrongly didn't support the industry to have organization reliance, security, safety, service quality and loyalty and reduce time and cost. With the current unprecedented crisis which are the COVID-19 and the massive oil crisis bundled together have created disturbance across the whole Energy industry which impacted the whole value chain not only for the Energy industry not the rest of the industries dramatically. The Panademic affect the whole key processes that the people used to for the last several decades, but the most important thing is change management process or manage to change process approach which is completely changed and from my opinion since years came true. Having the disruptive technologies will support the whole industry to come back much stronger than before as proven in other industries such as Aerospace and Defense, Telecome, Automative, Banking etc. The Intelligent Energy Platform focus on achieving what they couldn't achieve in the last decades through unique a approach towards the whole complete cycle Listen, Understand, effect and Decide, through developing and design a subway map for the whole workflows across the whole industry value chain integrating all the data sources together, by studying and remapping the whole processes, answering key four questions for each process, activity and tasks who, where, what and why, empowered machine learning with algorithms that will achieve the automation through digitizing and standardizing over a cognitive environment. There are several key pillars to get the digital transformation journey successfully and smoothly happening from my experience in the field operations, engineering, business, marketing and sales; Know and be clear on the end goal, which the Intelligent Energy Platform will include; select the right team from all the key stakholders, felexible and adoptable to change during the journey, tackle the exact needs for every process, activity and tasks, the power to change and update the solution at any given time, strong learning system, etc. In addition there are complimentary and network tool which is empowering the Intelligent Energy Platform that will expedite and support the journey massively, which is an advanced Infinity unique communication tool which is empower by all disruptive technology that will allow as an example all field engineers and management to be in one free Infinity business communication ' chatting' constructive and organize powered by disruptive solution where an example the engineer in a field and the operations has stopped for spare parts, equipment, machine, tool, etc. so he/she will send a normal message over our Infinity chatting app through the mobile or tablet and automatically this app will do a quick research in the back system, and display where it's available if it's within the country in another field, company, workshop, hence the engineer will click on the intended target, then automatically will go to the right approvals to approve on fly though the mobile or tablet, this will impact the performance of the operations massively and drop the non-productive time heavily by 20-30% and generate new business revenue in which few companies who are not utilizing all there equipment can rent to other sister companies and get revenue out of instead of just being in the workshop without any useful usage or productivity, it won’t stop by that only but will go to the contracts, legal, HR, etc. After implementing the solution and look to our demand graph, this free, perfect and instant unique communication app will allow the company immediately to see huge improvement on organization resilience which will reduce the time taken for any such request mentioned above from months to few days, organization will be more efficient, reduce cost by millions and millions meanwhile generate new business revenue by millions a well, enhance service customers loyalty and experience, improve decision making process, safety and security. this will impact directly the consumer surplus where the consumers who will be in this case the engineers will be willing to pay the gap based on the market preference and also avoiding the dead loss where the company will be financially and operationally more efficient. Not only that also transforming on people how they are communication through exchanging quickly photos expressing what they want to say, getting the attention quickly, make things faster in terms of decision that need to be taken through friends, families, and sometimes business as well with limitation. Digital is the only recourse and last hope for this industry to get out of its repeated pitfalls in the last decade and Intelligent Energy Platform will allow the industry and the whole value chain to be effectively integrated, tackle all the needs and requirements through Listen, understand, effect and decide to achieve a significant results, generate new jobs and roles and also will allow the industry to upturn again quickly and be able to face the upcoming expected and unexpected crisis. It's clear that the big players in the Energy industry are struggling because of several reasons but the most important factor is the digital path and develop digital solutions and one of the main issues is setting the right expectation which is related to the organizations, expectation and the experience across the whole ecosystem such operators, partners, vendors, etc. our Intelligent Energy Platform is focus on introducing an end-to-end platform solution focus on organization resilience, integrated technology, and completely agile complement by free, profit and instant app such as an infinity unique secured communication app, sharing experience business app, that focus on getting more and more networks to attract thousands and thousands of users and regain the trust and loyalty again in the industry. The unique secured communication app within the Intelligent Energy Platform which is n-sided with the engineers, service companies, management and business team will be zero-price quite close to the YouTube approach in terms of pricing strategy where it will be connecting n-sided with zero price and when it will expand it might be with negative price as well in which will allow 2/ 3 sided and even more to attract more users within the industries and enhance the service loyalty and quality, achieve one of the complex objective organization reliance, optimize performance, decision making and turn to data drive organization successfully and smoothly. Developing the Intelligent energy platform will allow our team to lead the platform approach in the Energy industry differently through free, profit and instant approach which will attract huge number of users who are looking for opportunities to gain the trust, loyalty again and feel secured. this will upturn the companies not only to find their ways throught the right approach but creating and developing new jobs and roles across the whole industry accompaniment significant contribution to the market revenue and profit.
