Abstract:
Benjamin Jowett published his first edition of the Complete Dialogues of Plato in 1871. My article explores how Jowett attempted to prevent radical appropriations of the frank treatment of homosexuality present in Plato’s texts, especially in the Symposium, now available for the first time, in their entirety, in English. I analyse some of the correspondence between Jowett and John Addington Symonds : here they discuss the role of male love in the Platonic canon and its relation to modern ethics. After his exchange with Symonds, while preparing the third edition of the Dialogues (1892), Jowett became conscious of the fact that some of Plato’s texts contained a potential for “misinterpretation” and therefore tried to increase his hermeneutic control over his translations in order to prevent degenerative readings of them.

Abstract:
In an attempt to investigate the nature of the coach-athlete relationship in a systematic way, Jowett and colleagues (e.g., Jowett & Cockerill, in press; Jowett & Meek, 2000a) employed the interpersonal constructs of Closeness, Coorientation, and Complementarity (3 Cs) to reflect coaches’ and athletes’ emotions, cognitions, and behaviors respectively. This study utilized the 3 Cs in order to examine the nature of a single typical coach-athlete dyad that experiences interpersonal conflict. The dyad was interviewed and their responses were content analyzed. The analysis revealed a marked difference in the coach’s and athlete’s perceptions about their athletic relationship and areas of emotional isolation, disagreements, and incompatibility. The findings are discussed within the 3 Cs model.

Abstract:
With one minor exception, it was not much more than a series of coincidences which linked Jowett and Colenso. The one exception was when Colenso was in England after being excommunicated by Robert Gray, bishop of Capetown, as metropolitan. Samuel Wilberforce refused to allow Colenso to function in the diocese of Oxford but Jowett invited him to preach in Balliol chapel, which was not under the bishop's jurisdiction. Apart from this there seems to be no evidence of direct personal contact between the two men.

Citronella of Java (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt) is an aromatical plant with large usage in the manufacture of mosquito repellents because it contains essential oil rich in citronelal. The application of tissue culture on a large scale in medicinal plants production has increased significantly, since the conventional methods of propagation limit the potential use of some plants. Due that, one citronella of Java protocol was established with the objective of getting an alternative technique for the propagation of that culture. Four experiments ware conducted to evaluate the asepsis time, the explant type, the effect of vegetal regulators on the "in vitro" propagation of citronella of Java, as well as the micro-propagated seedling acclimatization. The gotten results had disclosed that the use of sodium hypochlorite (0.5%) during 30 minutes promoted a satisfactory asepsis index. The shoot tips explants type showed greater potential for the ?in vitro? development. It was verified that the use of benzilaminapurine (BAP) cytokynin is indispensable to succeed in the citronella of Java "in vitro" establishment, being able to be used in the concentration of 2.0 mg L-1. However, the use of indolbutyric acid (IBA) in the different tested concentrations did not present any results that justify its use, neither in the citronella of Java multiplication nor in the root establishment. The root establishment was evidenced when micro-propagated seedlings had been inoculated only in MS culture medium. It was verified that the check (without vegetal regulator) had a direct organogenesis, while such event was not verified in the other treatments. In the micro-propagated seedling acclimatization it was verified that the use of the floating method, it was essential for the seedlings survival, resulting in high survival index

The Citronella Grass currently has excelled in domestic and foreign markets, due to its medicinal properties. The use of the essential oil is increasing, there are several functions, commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry, in agronomic practices (with adoption of conservation methods), used as insecticides, fungicides, in the area of veterinary as ticks and cleaning as disinfectants. The expectation for those who produce the oil is economically viable use your directing for family farmers which can add value to their properties and generate income. It is a little known plant, disclosed and addressed. Given this gap, was aim to work with citronella to evaluate performance in the treatments used, oil yield and seedling production. The challenge of this work is to bring information about the culture, cultivation and their purposes. In the study we evaluated various treatments with organic manure, mineral NPK and control, evaluating oil yield, fresh weight, dry weight, diameter, plant height after cutting. The experimental design was randomized with four replications. In organic treatments which got the biggest highlight was with 0.5 liter of organic fertilizer from fresh cattle manure, which was applied in each pit parcels worked. For the conditions of the State of Goiás plant development ensued in a very adaptable, demonstrating hardiness of the plant, and how it can be profitable for the producer of small income.

T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes are the main causative agents of dermatophytosis, a fungal infection that affects keratinized tissues of humans and animals. Considered one of the most diagnosed diseases in the world, research projects aiming the searching for new products with antifungal activity are necessary to overcome the difficulty in treating these fungal infections. In this context, the products from medicinal plants are highlighted, especially essential oils which have broad recognition of their antimicrobial power by many researchers. Thus, this study aims to identify the components of the essential oil of Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt ex Bor and investigate its antifungal activity against 16 strains of T. rubrum and 8 ones of T. mentagrophytes. The analysis of the oil chemical composition was performed by gas chromatography-mass scpectrometry (GC-MS). The antifungal tests were consisted of microbiological screening, determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal fungicidal concentration (MFC), analysis of the essential oils effects on mycelial growth, germination of fungal spores, in fungal viability within macro and micromorphology of dermatophytes, in the cell wall (test with sorbitol) and the cell membrane (cell lysis test). Results of GC-MS showed 18 compounds, citronellal (23.6 %), geraniol (18.8 %) and citronellol (11.74 %) were the majority constituents present in the essential oil. At the screening, the oil inhibited all strains, with zones of growth inhibition of 24-28 mm in diameter. The MIC was 312 μg/mL and CFM was 2500 μg/mL for 92% of the strains tested. The essential oil at 156, 312, 625 and 2500 μg/mL strongly prevented mycelial growth. In these same concentrations, the oil showed a strong inhibitory power on the conidia germination of both species. In the test for fungal viability was observed fungicidal effect of the essential oil in all concentrations. The main micromorphological changes in the dermatophytes induced by the oil were decreased conidia genesis and changes in shape and pigmentation of the hyphae. The colonies showed some changes in appearance and pigmentation. The results of sorbitol test suggest the antifungal action of the product does not directly involve the cell wall. The essential oil caused cell lysis, suggesting its actuation could probably involve the fungal plasma membrane. Given this, it is concluded that the essential oil of C. winterianus showed a strong inhibitory activity against dermatophytes and thus can be considered as a potential product with antifungal properties, especially for the treatment of dermatophytosis.

Due increase of incidence of fungal infections for Candida albicans and Aspergillus spp. in immunocompromised patients, and emerging resistant strains to conventional antifungals, it is accentuated the need for new antifungal. Essential oils have been tested for antimycotic activity and possess potential as antifungal agents. This work investigated the activity of essential oil of Cymbopogon winterianus against Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus and A. fumigatus, by MIC and MFC; time-kill methods and morphological changes in the C. albicans, inhibition of the fungal mycelial growth and analysis of conidia germination of Aspergillus flavus and A. fumigatus when exposed to several concentrations of oil and by cellular leakage and assessed the bind of essential oil with ergosterol. The results shown that essential oil had concentrationdependent antifungal activity, alters the morphology in C. albicans, inhibits conidia germination and the radial mycelia growth of Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus fumigatus, causes cellular leakage of all strains of fungal species tested and binds to ergosterol. These results make essential oil of Cymbopogon winterianus a potential agent in controlling fungi growth that cause infections, like hospital-acquired infections.

This research aimed to study the antifungal properties of essential oil of Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt associated with synthetic antifungals against strains of Aspergillus. The parameters used for this purpose were based on the determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration, Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index (method of association - Checkerboard) as well as in microbial death curve. Amphotericin B and fluconazole antifungal synthetic were used as positive controls, and is also used in combination with tests of the natural product. All tests were performed in triplicate. The present study allowed further our understanding about the therapeutic effects of essential oil of C. winterianus, when used in isolation or drug related alluded to earlier. In addition, we attempted to find viable alternatives to the treatment of Aspergillus infections, currently based on the prolonged use of allopathic drugs, where the observed side effects are a limiting factor to its full success.

Citronella of Java (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt.) is an aromatic plant of great economical value, it is also well known in all over the world due to repellent characteristics to its essential oil in citronellal. The propagation in vitro is a good method to multiply citronella, due to the fact that the division of the citronella roots ordinarily used facilitates the cutting contamination. However, there are reports that citronella does not present good results in the propagation in vitro when collected in determined seasonal conditions. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to evaluate the effect of the seasonally about the propagation in vitro of citronella of Java, being used different concentration of IBA and BAP, as well as evaluating the income of the essential oil for each season. The explants were collected in each season of the year and inoculated in MS in addition to combination of IBA and BAP. At the end of 30 days the following variants had been evaluated: Height (cm), number of shootings, formation of callus, oxidation and contamination. In the realized conditions, was observed a good multiplication rate during the summer, being just necessary the addition of 1,0 mg/L-1 of BAP in the medium culture, commonly to this it did not have oxidation in this season. The height only presented significant result in the summer. It had formation of callus in the base of the explants either in the autumn or in the winter and in the summer, but in the summer it had a concomitant increase in the number of shootings. The oxidation was higher in the spring. (100% of oxidation). The contamination did not present significant results in any season, therefore, independent from seasonal condition. The extraction of the essential oil was accomplished in each season of the year by in Clevenger appliance. The great income of the essential oil was gotten in the winter with 1,37% of oil, when the plants were totally bloomy. Although the normal conditions of bloom of citronella in the south region is during the spring and in the beginning of the summer. The spring and the summer had 0, 77 and 0,76% income of essential oil, respective. In the autumn presented a lesser income, with 0,57% of essential oil

Abstract:
Abstract The intensive exploration of marine resources is announced by Chinese government. The abundant offshore wind energy in the water depth of 30–50 m shall be developed in the offshore regions in China during the next decades, which are also feasible areas for marine farming. In view of structural safety and economic benefits, a multi-utility offshore structure is proposed in the study with the intension of realizing the ocean resources with high quality exploration. The recommended offshore structure is consists of a jacket offshore wind turbine and a steel cage (JOWT-SC). In order to investigate the influence of the additional aquaculture cage, the finite element models of JOWT-SC is established in SACS, the hydrodynamic model of the aquaculture cage is equivalented as Morison model. The comparisons of the dynamic characteristics and structural responses with the original jacket offshore wind turbine (JOWT) are carried out. There are the remarkable discrepancies between the natural modes of JOWT-SC and JOWT due to the added aquaculture cage. Meanwhile, the remarkably increased hydrodynamic forces on JOWT-SC under wave and current loads are observed. The influence of aquaculture cage on the dynamic characteristics and hydrodynamics of JOWT-SC are discussed.

Abstract:
This study analyses the predictors of opposition towards immigrants of “different ethnic groups” and “poor countries” in 5 European countries (Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, France and United Kingdom), using data from the European Social Survey 1 (Jowell & the Central Coordinating Team, 2003). Besides Portugal, a country that has moved from being one of net emigration to being a new host country for immigrants, the other countries were selected according to their main policies of immigrants’ integration. Opposition towards immigration (OTI) is analysed using three theoretical models: a) the economic self-interest model that proposes that opposition towards immigration may be due to economic factors; b) the social capital model according to which social trust and self-reliance on political and social system may shape peoples’ opinions on the benefits of immigration; c) Schwartz’s human values model, based on which it is possible to predict that some values facilitate OTI, whereas others facilitate openness to immigration. The hypotheses tested are: a) there is a negative correlation between economic well-being and OTI; b) a negative correlation between social capital and OTI; c) a positive correlation between both conservation and self-enhancement values and OTI, and a negative correlation between both self-transcendence and openness to change values and OTI; d) the social values model will further predict opposition towards immigration over and above the other models. Results globally support the formulated hypotheses.
