Abstract:
Lars Schreiber Pedersen: The Führer from Lendum
In writer Erik Aalbæk Jensen’s well-known homeland novel from Vendsyssel Perleporten (The Pearl Gate) from 1964, the figure “Kratholmmanden” (the Kratholm man), is a local farm owner and Nazi leader, who with mixed success tries to win his local area’s residents over to the cause of National Socialism. Erik Aalbæk Jensen’s “Kratholmmand” character was based on Christian Mikkelstrup. During 1934–44, Mikkelstrup was a member of the National Socialist Workers’ Party of Denmark (DNSAP) and from 1935–44 he functioned as the party leader in Horns Herred in north east Vendsyssel. Despite his passionate engagement for the cause during his 10 years in the service of the party, Mikkelstrup was only able to convince a few local residents about the joy of National Socialism. DNSAP never gained any importance in north east Vendsyssel. The local party division in Lendum, which held its meetings in Mikkelstrup’s home, numbered 20–25 members at its height. Mikkelstrup was not solely to blame for the lack of support for the party in his local area. Both he and his fellow believers fought a battle that was impossible to win. The majority of local residents, like the rest of Denmark, at no point wanted to know about DNSAP – which the county council elections in 1935 and the national elections in 1935, 1939 and 1943 clearly showed – and even a leader with a bigger profile than Mikkelstrup, who was neither much of a writer or a speaker, would hardly be likely to attract more members to the party from the region. Together with a number of dissatisfied DNSAP members, he left the party in 1944 and joined the newly-formed Nazi party “Dansk National Samling”, in which however, he did not make much of an impact. With the Liberation of Denmark in May 1945, he was arrested by the resistance movement and was subsequently found guilty of passing on information to the German Security Service (Sicherheitsdienst), which had been based in Aalborg during the occupation. He received a sentence of 18 months imprisonment. He stayed faithful to his National Socialist beliefs after the war but after his release from the prison camp at Kragskovhede in August 1946, he devoted his work to running his farm at Lendum in Vendsyssel. Christian Mikkelstrup died in 1971.

Abstract:
The poetry of Bohdan Ihor Antonych (1909–1937), a Ukrainian writer born in Lemkivshchyna near Gorlice, attracted Kazimierz Andrzej Jaworski’s attention with its fairy-tale qualities, a feeling of unreality and idealization of the world. From three collections of poems, Welcome to Life (1931), Three Rings (1934) and Book of the Lion (1936), varying in terms of their subject matter, the translator from Lublin chose works which reveal youthful joy of life and optimism Lemkivshchyna endowed their author with. Jaworski devoted most attention to the poems from The Green Gospel collection (1938), reflecting the essence of Antonych’s poetry, in which nature becomes religion. Jaworski was inclined to select works which were close to his own poems, e.g. from The Tatras and I cycle and the collection On a Granite Mast (1920). In the Polish version of Antonych’s poems, the translator’s interference is clearly noticeable. Jaworski does not fully rely on the original; he often introduces certain transformations within lines or stanzas as well as additions and semantic equivalents which are far from the Ukrainian version. This could result from his personal observations on nature, which he admired. It could also be caused by the difficulties of translation ensuing from linguistic complexities, as Antonych had the remarkable ability to represent complex images in a few lines. He achieved it through an appropriate choice of words and metaphorical constructions, which often prove to be challenging for the translator. Kazimierz Andrzej Jaworski was one of the first Polish translators who faced this task. As early as in the 1930s, he familiarized Polish readers with a few poems of the Lemko poet who lived and wrote in the period when Polish-Ukrainian coexistence within the borders of one country was being shaped.

Abstract:
Clement Henry Bamford (′Bam‵) was born in Stafford to Frederic Jesse and Catherine Mary Bamford (nèe Shelley). His father was the son of a Congregationalist minister and his mother the daughter of a farming family from the northern outskirts of Stafford. The Bamfords were miners from the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire coalfields. Bam's grandfather was the only one of eight brothers who avoided coalmining, a job that started for all of his brothers at the age of 10 years. He served a congregation in Cornwall, where Bam's father was born, before transferring to North Staffordshire during the 1890s. Bam's father became an accountant and worked for the same firm until his death in 1935. Stafford was a bustling place with good educational and cultural opportunities. It was the administrative centre of the county and in addition to this it had footwear, electrical machinery and other manufacturing activities to keep its population of 30000 busy. Bam was an only child and in matters of upbringing his mother held sway; he was raised as a Catholic and attended St Patrick's primary school, where he appears to have been happy, successful and well regarded by his teachers. Scholarship entry to academically ambitious secondary schools was rare for the pupils of St Patrick's, who usually went directly from school to employment locally. When Bam was entered for a scholarship to King Edward VI School he did not share his parents' joy at first because he believed the extra work would distract him from two activities that already received his attention and turned out to be the lifelong enthusiasms that brought him pleasure and success; namely, chemistry and music.

ZANDERS, VIESTURS. "1918–1944 METŲ LATVIJOS KNYGININKYSTĖS TYRIMAI: AUTORIAI, TEMOS, LEIDINIAI, SPAUDA." Knygotyra 48 (January 1, 2015): 67–77. http://dx.doi.org/10.15388/kn.v48i0.8112.

Full text
Abstract:
Knygininkystės tyrimai Latvijoje pradėti XVIII amžiuje, kai pasirodė pastoriaus ir bibliofilo L. Bergmanno esė apie Rygos spaustuves. Kai kurias svarbias leidyklas aprašė A. Bucholtzas ir A. Poelchau XIX a. – XX a. pradžioje. Kai kurie autoriai (K. Draviņš) dirbo tremtyje.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Changes to the treatment of Coleoptera family-group names published by Bouchard et al. (2011) are given. These include necessary additions and corrections based on much-appreciated suggestions from our colleagues, as well as our own research. Reversal of Precedence is used herein to qualify the following family-group names as nomina protecta: Murmidiinae Jacquelin du Val, 1858 (Cerylonidae) and Chalepini Weise, 1910 (Chrysomelidae). The following 17 Coleoptera family-group names (some of which are used as valid) are homonyms of other family-group names in zoology, these cases must be referred to the Commission for a ruling to remove the homonymy: Catiniidae Ponomarenko, 1968 (Catiniidae); Homopterinae Wasmann, 1920, Glyptini Horn, 1881 (Carabidae); Tychini Raffray, 1904, Ocypodina Hatch, 1957 (Staphylinidae); Gonatinae Kuwert, 1891 (Passalidae); Aplonychidae Burmeister, 1855 (Scarabaeidae); Microchaetini Paulus, 1973 (Byrrhidae); Epiphanini Muona, 1993 (Eucnemidae); Limoniina Jakobson, 1913 (Elateridae); Ichthyurini Champion, 1915 (Cantharidae); Decamerinae Crowson, 1964 (Trogossitidae); Trichodidae Streubel, 1839 (Cleridae); Monocorynini Miyatake, 1988 (Coccinellidae); Gastrophysina Kippenberg, 2010, Chorinini Weise, 1923 (Chrysomelidae); Meconemini Pierce, 1930 (Anthribidae). Evans, John MacLaren. "Elihu and the interpretation of the book of Job." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1990. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1933/.

Full text
Abstract:
Detailed analysis of a number of passages in 32-37 establishes: (1) that Elihu does not present a solution to the problem of the suffering of the innocent: his view of suffering as punishment for actual sin and intended to communicate to man the necessity of repentance, is not an enunciation of a distinctive conception of divine pedagogy or discipline, but represents essentially the same position as that of the three friends; (2) that neither his name nor his more extensive genealogy is significative of a spectral mediatorial role; it is probable that they merely fulfil the interpolator's purpose in symbolising the exalted spiritual status of Elihu and thereby legitimising the belated appearance of a hitherto unacknowledged participant in the debate; (3) that there is no basis for the conception of Elihu as a mediator between God and man; on the contrary, it is evident that he intervenes on behalf of God and against Job; his speeches are principally a polemic against the Divine speeches, to be understood, not as providing a transition to the theophany, but as rendering the appearance of God altogether unnecessary. In conclusion, it is suggested that a diachronic approach has continuing value in application not only to the book of Job, but to the Old Testament as a whole. A synchronic approach is in danger of assuming an intrinsic unity which in actuality does not exist. In its final form, Job is an amalgam that, far from possessing a theological or a literary, even a dramatic, unity, contains a multiplicity of voices and traditions, of which Elihu is one. To see the book otherwise is to neutralise the dynamic quality or message which has made it so enduring.

It was one of the most influential cultural and educational organizations in the country, regarding all working Lithuanian associations in Vilnius region. The need for it was immense as most of the residents in Vilnius region were countrymen. The aim of the association was to promote the education of Lithuanian youth, as well as to maintain the national identity. For this aim, the association’s departments, libraries, reading-rooms were being established in various regions. Lectures, courses and cultural events were being organized as well. The association worked according to its rules which, after long struggle, were ratified by the government. The main its departments were Central Board and General Members Meeting. Central Board comprised five people and a chairperson. Lithuanian St Casimir Association (LSCA) cooperated with “Rytas” educational association and Temporary Committee of Vilnius Lithuanians (TCVL). The latter provided financial and other support. Through the mediation of it, through partially conspiratorial channels the press and literature needed for education was available from Lithuania. The founders of the LSCA were authoritative priests, and the long-term chairmen were A. Viskantas and V. Taškūnas. During the year 1925-1930 the association managed to establish many of its departments and in 1935 the record was reached as even 477 departments were working... [to full text]

Our research is based on two main foundations: 1. In the negotiations involving the pacification of Rio Grande?s policy, when this issue gained momentum during the 1934 elections, until the signing of the pact called modus vivendi; and 2. from the political erosion of governor Flores da Cunha base, which began in late 1936, until his resignation in 1937. We seek to know, through the political trends of the period (PRR, PL, PRL, Dissent Liberal, PRC, UDN, Liberation Action) and through the actors involved (Raul Pilla, Maur?cio Cardoso Flores da Cunha, Benjamin Vargas, Jo?o Neves da Fontoura, Antunes Maciel, Borges de Medeiros, Get?lio Vargas and others), how was the process that led from pacification to the definite rupture in the state's politics. For this we use a number of primary sources, especially newspapers and private collections telegrams, dealing with them according to content analysis, and also following authors who thought, theoretically and methodologically, the concept of Regional History. In addition, we put this work into the debates surrounding the nouvelle histoire politique by historiography in recent years. We developed our research through the analysis of documents of NUPERGS, CPDOC, Media Museum Hip?lito Jos? da Costa, DELFOS/PUCRS, Solar dos C?mara, Arquivo Radio Difus?o/UFRGS and Rio Grande do Sul?s historical archives.

Jojo, Avela. "Occupational stress and intrinsic motivation as determinants of job engagement in the South African Police Service in Greater Kokstad Municipality." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/1995.

Abstract:
Occupational stress, intrinsic motivation and job engagement are areas of importance for today’s management. The main objective of this study was to explore the combined effect of occupational stress and intrinsic motivation in determining job engagement in the South African Police Service. Moreover, the study investigated the relationship between occupational stress, intrinsic motivation and job engagement. The study also sought to enquire into the effects rank and gender has on the study variables. A quantitative approach was adopted. A structured self – administered questionnaire comprising of four sections: biographical information, police stress questionnaire, intrinsic motivation inventory and job engagement scale was used to collect data. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse data, and both descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized. The results revealed a negative relationship between occupational stress and job engagement. A positive relationship between intrinsic motivation and job engagement was also found. There was no combined effect of occupational stress and intrinsic motivation on job engagement. Lastly, no significant differences in the way police experience stress were found among rank and gender. The researcher concluded that even when police officers are under great amounts of stress they are still engaged in their jobs. Where levels of intrinsic motivation were high for the police officers, so were the levels of job engagement. Demographic variables did not yield any significant relationships to the study variables. These findings are of significance in creating a police force which is productive and meets the goals and objectives of the South African Police Service.

Taradash, Daniel Lawrence. "Exodus of champions : the great migration and the shaping of the civil rights activities of Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1915.

Abstract:
While the intersection of sport and the Civil Rights era has been well documented from a number of angles and approaches, perhaps no athlete has been so thoroughly connected to this period in history as Muhammad Ali. His stances on Vietnam, race relations and religion during this period have provided a fountain of historical research and narratives on this very turbulent period. However, what about the political and social activities of Ali’s contemporaries? Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman were not just heavyweight champions, but also individuals who were profoundly affected by the mass exodus of Blacks out of the South and into the cities of the North and West. Known to history as the Great Migration, this movement not only affected these men physically, but also helped to shape their ideas and understandings about racial identity, civil rights and race relations in their adult lives. The purpose of this research is to examine the political and social activities and experiences throughout the lives of Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman. In addition to exploring the narratives surrounding their migration experiences, it will display the differences in opinion each man had regarding issues such as segregation and how they defined themselves against Ali’s largely ignored, hardline segregationist stance. Finally, it will explore the possibilities for reexamining not just the popularly accepted narratives of these four men, but also of Ali himself.

Abstract:
The thesis provides a detailed examination of job satisfaction through three distinct essays. The first chapter uses UK household panel data (the BHPS) to consider differences in job satisfaction in the non-profit sector, compared with other sectors. The second looks at the effect of earnings – that of the respondent and of relevant other people – and of payment systems on job satisfaction. This is based on data from round 5 of the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS). The third essay seeks to examine and to challenge the long-established finding that union members tend to have lower job satisfaction than non-members, and this is addressed with two rounds of data from the European Social Survey (ESS).

Abstract:

Walter, Sonja, and Jeong-Dong Lee. "Human capital depreciation and job tasks." In Seventh International Conference on Higher Education Advances. Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/head21.2021.13078.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to investigate the link between human capital depreciation and job tasks, with an emphasis on potential differences between education levels. We estimate an extended Mincer equation based on Neumann and Weiss’s (1995) model using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel. The results show that human capital gained from higher education levels depreciates at a faster rate than other human capital. Moreover, the productivity-enhancing value of education diminishes faster in jobs with a high share of non-routine analytical, non-routine manual, and routine cognitive tasks. These jobs are characterized by more frequent changes in core-skill or technology-skill requirements. The key implication of this research is that education should focus on equipping workers with more general skills in all education levels. With ongoing technological advances, work environments, and with it, skill demands will change, increasing the importance to provide educational and lifelong learning policies to counteract the depreciation of skills. The study contributes by incorporating a task perspective based on the classification used in works on job polarization. This allows a comparison with studies on job obsolescence due to labor-replacing technologies and enables combined education and labor market policies to address the challenges imposed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Abstract:
China's economy is developing very quickly. Shanghai and Shenzhen, the most vigorous cities, are progressing from a planned economy to a market economy. Their economies are progressing from a comparatively well-off condition to a wealthy condition. Housing facilities are crossing or will cross over from the former condition of "no car, no elevator" to a newer condition of "cars in the family" and "elevators in multi-storey housing." How can Chinese architects do their job for varied types of housing to fit this transitional situation?

Abstract:
Abstract This project takes a comprehensive look at model development for the classic magnetic levitation system and examines differences between the conventional mag-lev model and an actual system. Also examined are the effects that un-modeled dynamics can have on the stability of a simulated system. This project combines and expands upon modeling techniques presented in similar projects (Lawson and Gillies, 1989, Lin and Jou, 1993, Oguchi and Tomigashi, 1990, Wong, 1986), and presents a method for modeling the mag-lev system which combines conventional electromagnetic theory and data from the physical plant. The model is then tested by designing and simulating controllers with the model and then applying the controllers to the experimental apparatus.
