Abstract:
Detailed analysis of a number of passages in 32-37 establishes: (1) that Elihu does not present a solution to the problem of the suffering of the innocent: his view of suffering as punishment for actual sin and intended to communicate to man the necessity of repentance, is not an enunciation of a distinctive conception of divine pedagogy or discipline, but represents essentially the same position as that of the three friends; (2) that neither his name nor his more extensive genealogy is significative of a spectral mediatorial role; it is probable that they merely fulfil the interpolator's purpose in symbolising the exalted spiritual status of Elihu and thereby legitimising the belated appearance of a hitherto unacknowledged participant in the debate; (3) that there is no basis for the conception of Elihu as a mediator between God and man; on the contrary, it is evident that he intervenes on behalf of God and against Job; his speeches are principally a polemic against the Divine speeches, to be understood, not as providing a transition to the theophany, but as rendering the appearance of God altogether unnecessary. In conclusion, it is suggested that a diachronic approach has continuing value in application not only to the book of Job, but to the Old Testament as a whole. A synchronic approach is in danger of assuming an intrinsic unity which in actuality does not exist. In its final form, Job is an amalgam that, far from possessing a theological or a literary, even a dramatic, unity, contains a multiplicity of voices and traditions, of which Elihu is one. To see the book otherwise is to neutralise the dynamic quality or message which has made it so enduring.

LIETUVIŲ Šv. KAZIMIERO DRAUGIJA (Jaunimui auklėti ir globoti) Lietuvių Šv. Kazimiero draugija (jaunimui auklėti ir globoti) buvo įsteigta 1925 m. Tai buvo viena įtakingiausių kultūros ir švietimo organizacijų kaime, iš visų Vilniaus krašte veikusių lietuviškų draugijų. Jos poreikis buvo didelis, todėl kad dauguma Vilniaus krašte gyvenusių lietuvių buvo kaimiečiai. Draugijos tikslas buvo skatinti lietuvių jaunimo švietimą, o taip pat išlaikyti tautinį identitetą. Šiam tikslui įvairiose regionuose buvo kuriami draugijos skyriai, bibliotekos, skaityklos. Organizuojamos paskaitos, kursai ir kultūros renginiai. Draugija veikė pg. savo įstatus, kurie po ilgų pastangų buvo valdžios patvirtinti. Pagrindiniai jos padaliniai buvo Centro valdyba ir Visuotinis narių susirinkimas. Centro valdyba susidėjo iš 5 asmenų su pirmininku priešakyje. Savo veikloje Lietuvių Šv. Kazimiero draugija (LŠKD) bendradarbiavo su „Ryto“ švietimo draugija ir Laikinuoju Vilniaus lietuvių komitetu (LVLK). Būtent šis komitetas teikė finansinę ir įvairią kitokią paramą. Tarpininkaujant jam, iš Lietuvos pusiau konspiruotais kanalais buvo gaunama spauda ir literatūra, reikalinga švietimui. LŠKD įkūrėjai buvo didelį autoritetą turintys kunigai, o ilgalaikiais pirmininkais buvo A. Viskantas ir V. Taškūnas. 1925-1930 m. veiklos laikotarpiu draugijai pavyko įsteigti daugelį savo skyrių, o 1935 m. pasiektas rekordas, jų veikė netgi 477. [toliau žr. visą tekstą]<br>SUMMARY Lithuanian St. Casimir Association (for educating and fostering youth) was established in 1925. It was one of the most influential cultural and educational organizations in the country, regarding all working Lithuanian associations in Vilnius region. The need for it was immense as most of the residents in Vilnius region were countrymen. The aim of the association was to promote the education of Lithuanian youth, as well as to maintain the national identity. For this aim, the association’s departments, libraries, reading-rooms were being established in various regions. Lectures, courses and cultural events were being organized as well. The association worked according to its rules which, after long struggle, were ratified by the government. The main its departments were Central Board and General Members Meeting. Central Board comprised five people and a chairperson. Lithuanian St Casimir Association (LSCA) cooperated with “Rytas” educational association and Temporary Committee of Vilnius Lithuanians (TCVL). The latter provided financial and other support. Through the mediation of it, through partially conspiratorial channels the press and literature needed for education was available from Lithuania. The founders of the LSCA were authoritative priests, and the long-term chairmen were A. Viskantas and V. Taškūnas. Our research is based on two main foundations: 1. In the negotiations involving the pacification of Rio Grande?s policy, when this issue gained momentum during the 1934 elections, until the signing of the pact called modus vivendi; and 2. from the political erosion of governor Flores da Cunha base, which began in late 1936, until his resignation in 1937. We seek to know, through the political trends of the period (PRR, PL, PRL, Dissent Liberal, PRC, UDN, Liberation Action) and through the actors involved (Raul Pilla, Maur?cio Cardoso Flores da Cunha, Benjamin Vargas, Jo?o Neves da Fontoura, Antunes Maciel, Borges de Medeiros, Get?lio Vargas and others), how was the process that led from pacification to the definite rupture in the state's politics. For this we use a number of primary sources, especially newspapers and private collections telegrams, dealing with them according to content analysis, and also following authors who thought, theoretically and methodologically, the concept of Regional History. In addition, we put this work into the debates surrounding the nouvelle histoire politique by historiography in recent years. We developed our research through the analysis of documents of NUPERGS, CPDOC, Media Museum Hip?lito Jos? da Costa, DELFOS/PUCRS, Solar dos C?mara, Arquivo Radio Difus?o/UFRGS and Rio Grande do Sul?s historical archives.<br>Este trabalho analisa a pol?tica ga?cha, entre 1934 e 1937, durante o governo Flores da Cunha. Abstract:
Occupational stress, intrinsic motivation and job engagement are areas of importance for today’s management. The main objective of this study was to explore the combined effect of occupational stress and intrinsic motivation in determining job engagement in the South African Police Service. Moreover, the study investigated the relationship between occupational stress, intrinsic motivation and job engagement. The study also sought to enquire into the effects rank and gender has on the study variables. A quantitative approach was adopted. A structured self – administered questionnaire comprising of four sections: biographical information, police stress questionnaire, intrinsic motivation inventory and job engagement scale was used to collect data. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse data, and both descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized. The results revealed a negative relationship between occupational stress and job engagement. A positive relationship between intrinsic motivation and job engagement was also found. There was no combined effect of occupational stress and intrinsic motivation on job engagement. Lastly, no significant differences in the way police experience stress were found among rank and gender. The researcher concluded that even when police officers are under great amounts of stress they are still engaged in their jobs. Where levels of intrinsic motivation were high for the police officers, so were the levels of job engagement. Demographic variables did not yield any significant relationships to the study variables. These findings are of significance in creating a police force which is productive and meets the goals and objectives of the South African Police Service.

While the intersection of sport and the Civil Rights era has been well documented from a number of angles and approaches, perhaps no athlete has been so thoroughly connected to this period in history as Muhammad Ali. His stances on Vietnam, race relations and religion during this period have provided a fountain of historical research and narratives on this very turbulent period. However, what about the political and social activities of Ali’s contemporaries? Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman were not just heavyweight champions, but also individuals who were profoundly affected by the mass exodus of Blacks out of the South and into the cities of the North and West. Known to history as the Great Migration, this movement not only affected these men physically, but also helped to shape their ideas and understandings about racial identity, civil rights and race relations in their adult lives. The purpose of this research is to examine the political and social activities and experiences throughout the lives of Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman. In addition to exploring the narratives surrounding their migration experiences, it will display the differences in opinion each man had regarding issues such as segregation and how they defined themselves against Ali’s largely ignored, hardline segregationist stance. Finally, it will explore the possibilities for reexamining not just the popularly accepted narratives of these four men, but also of Ali himself.

La tesi è una raccolta di tre saggi sulla soddisfazione sul posto di lavoro. Il primo capitolo utilizza il dataset panel BHPS per analizzare le differenze di soddisfazione lavorativa dei lavoratori impiegati nel settore nonprofit rispetto agli altri settori. Il secondo considera l'effetto del salario -sia quello del lavoratore che di un gruppo rilevante di riferimento- e degli schemi incentivanti di retribuzione sulla soddisfazione lavorativa. L'analisi si basa sul round 5 dello European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS). Il terzo capitolo analizza e critica la relazione da tempo condivisa in letteratura che i membri di organizzazioni sindacali riportano minore soddisfazione lavorativa rispetto ai non iscritti, mediante l'analisi dei dati dello European Social Survey (ESS),round 3 e 5.<br>The thesis provides a detailed examination of job satisfaction through three distinct essays. The first chapter uses UK household panel data (the BHPS) to consider differences in job satisfaction in the non-profit sector, compared with other sectors. The second looks at the effect of earnings – that of the respondent and of relevant other people – and of payment systems on job satisfaction. This is based on data from round 5 of the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS). The third essay seeks to examine and to challenge the long-established finding that union members tend to have lower job satisfaction than non-members, and this is addressed with two rounds of data from the European Social Survey (ESS).

Det blir allt vanligare i Sverige att företag och organisationer lämnar enskilda kontorsrum för att övergå till kontorslandskap. Tidigare forskning visar att trivseln hos de anställda ofta minskar vid denna typ av förändring och att det kan ge både positiva och negativa konsekvenser för organisationens produktivitet. Det finns enligt tidigare forskning vinster i att anställda blir delaktiga vid organisationsförändringar för att behålla god produktivitet och trivsel. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka hur trivsel hos kontorsanställda upplevs i kontorslandskap samt om trivsel och produktivitet påverkas på grund av förändrad kontorstyp.  Vi har i vår studie undersökt hur produktivitet och upplevelsen av trivsel förändrats hos handläggare och utredare på Försäkringskassans Nationella Försäkringscenter (NFC) i Visby. Denna statliga organisation valdes då de våren 2013 bytte kontorstyp från egna kontor till kontorslandskap. Tre enheter på NFC i Visby valdes att ingå i studien utifrån att ärendehanteringen av dessa enheters ärendeslag var relativt snabb.  Som undersökningsmetoder för denna fallstudie använde vi oss av produktivitetsmätning, enkätundersökning och observationer. Produktivitet mättes i studien genom statistik över handläggares och utredares avslutade ärenden. Mätningen gjordes genom att de anställdas produktivitet över fyra veckor 2012 jämfördes med fyra veckor 2013 för de tre utvalda enheterna på NFC i Visby. Trivseln undersöktes genom en webbenkät, som skickades ut till samtliga handläggare och utredare på de tre enheterna. Anledningen till detta var att få en uppfattning hur de anställdas trivsel förändrats i och med byte av kontorstyp. Observationer användes för att kunna beskriva det nya kontorets utformning och för att få en djupare förståelse av de anställdas uppfattningar om den nya arbetsplatsen.  Ingen signifikant skillnad i produktiviteten kunde påvisas vid mätning av genomsnittsproduktion under fyra veckor. Vi kunde dock inte utifrån resultatet i denna studie utesluta att förändring av konstorstyp påverkade produktiviteten på grund av otillräckligt underlag för mätning. Enkätsvaren visade att trivseln för deltagarna i studien efter byte till kontorslandskap hade minskat i jämförelse med arbete i egna kontorsrum. Störst försämring som deltagarna upplevde var förändringen av arbetsplatsens geografiska läge. Många deltagare upplevde även försämring i den fysiska miljön som belysning, temperatur, ljud och rörelser i kontorslandskapet efter flytt till kontorslandskap. Faktorer som arbetsrelaterat stöd och hjälp från kollegor och chef hade inte förändrats signifikant men deltagarna upplevde att det personliga stödet från kollegor hade minskat. Det framkom även att deltagarna upplevde en minskad integritet och ökad känsla av att bli kontrollerad. Ytterligare slutsatser dragna från studien visade även att brist på delaktighet kunde bidra till minskad upplevelse av trivsel och minskad produktivitet.  Avslutningsvis lämnas förslag till fortsatt forskning om hur produktivitet och trivsel förändras på lång sikt orsakat av byte av kontortypen. Kunskap inom detta område kan bidra till strategiska verktyg för planering av kontorstyper som ger både hög produktivitet och trivsel hos de anställda.<br>It is more and more common in Sweden for companies and organizations to switch from cell offices to open plan office. Previous research shows that job satisfaction among employees often reduces. This change of office type can provide both positive and negative effects for organizational productivity. The purpose of this study was to investigate how job satisfaction and productivity is affected due to the changed type of office. We investigated how productivity and job satisfaction were affected for employees at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency National Center (NFC) in Visby who made this type of organizational change. Conclusions in the study showed that job satisfaction for the participants after switching to open plan office had decreased in comparison with working in cell offices. No significant differences in productivity were measured. We cannot from the results of this study exclude the possibility that changes of the office type affects productivity due to inadequate basis for measurement we used. Knowledge in this area may contribute to the strategic tool for planning an office type that provides high productivity and job satisfaction for employees.

L'usage des listes dans les romans de Don DeLillo est ici analysé d'un point de vue rhétorique. La synthèse critique des travaux existants permet de définir la liste comme un parallélisme paradigmatique. Les "listes-inventaire" permettent à Don DeLillo d'exprimer la surenchère sémiologique à l'origine d'une crise herméneutique chez les personnages, crise qu'ils tentent de résoudre en instrumentalisant le langage pour ordonner leur existence. De la résistance du langage à se laisser investir d'un sens fixe résulte les "listes hétérologiques", dans lesquelles la polyphonie du langage est mise en avant. Dans les romans de Don DeLillo existe une tension entre deux conceptions de l'histoire et de la narration que l'on retrouve dans les "listes-récit". Tout en imposant une logique d'ensemble à la narration, ces listes montrent la nature disparate des évènements qui la composent. Les "listes-archétype" permettent de mettre en question la notion d'expérience authentique<br>Don DeLillo's use of lists is analysed here from a rhetorical perspective. A critical reading of existing works on the subject leads to a definition of the list as a paradigmatic parallelism. "Inventory lists" allow DeLillo to give voice to the semiotic frenzy present in the universe of his novels. This frenzy is at the origin of the characters' epistemological crises, crises they try to resolve by instrumentalising enumerative language as a tool for ordering their existence. Language's resistance to being invested with a stable and authoritative meaning result in "heteroglossic lists", where the polyphony of language is foregrounded. Tension in DeLillo's novels between two opposing conceptions of history and narration is most visible in "narrative lists". Narrative lists show the disparate nature of narrative moments while at the same time uniting them in a common logic. Finally, "archetype lists" destabilise the idea of authentic experience in DeLillo's novels

Abstract:
Analyzing the development of the consequences of voluntary job changes in Germany between 1985 and 2013, the study focuses on income gains and job satisfaction increases. Drawing on arguments of the job-search literature on the one hand and the proliferation of choices on the other we investigate whether the returns of job changes have increased or decreased. Results show that income gains have decreased over time while the job satisfaction surplus has remained stable. We further conclude that in determining the outcomes of job changes over time, structural factors seem to be more important than individual ones.

Abstract:
The largest of the War on Poverty programs, Job Corps, was created to alleviate poverty by providing affective, remedial, and vocational training for disadvantaged youth throughout the country. Job Corps was the first attempt in the United States to establish and operate a national program of residential vocational education. Legislation and plans for the program were drafted in a very short period of time, and the gains and failures of Job Corps' first ten years can be attributed to the speed with which the program was enacted. Despite early shortcomings, Job Corps survived a political attack by President Nixon, and emerged as a viable poverty program in the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) legislation. Records of the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), Department of Labor, and the White House were reviewed. The recent increase in utility research has provided improved methods for estimating the standard deviation of performance in dollars. Subjective estimates of an individual's overall worth to the organization allow the utility of various organizational interventions to be evaluated. However, this research does little to illuminate the dimensions underlying supervisory judgments of utility. The recent increase in utility research has provided improved methods for estimating the standard deviation of performance in dollars. Subjective estimates of an individual's overall worth to the organization allow the utility of various organizational interventions to be evaluated. However, this research does little to illuminate the dimensions underlying supervisory judgments of utility. The policies underlying judgments of overall worth were captured to a substantial degree, with cross-validated R² values ranging from .46 to .69. A unit weighting scheme was applied to the six predictors, resulting in r² values that exceeded the cross-validated R² derived from regression analyses. This substantial predictability of utility judgments provided the capacity to generalize utility information from a sample of jobs to the population of interest. Analyses comparing validity-based and utility-based clustering schemes explored the degree of convergence between the two approaches to classifying jobs. These analyses indicated that there was some overlap, with validity information being useful in establishing broad categories of jobs associated with similar utility-relevant attributes. At the same time, these analyses demonstrated that the two approaches were not equivalent. Implications of this research are discussed, and several possible directions for future research are noted. It is suggested that such policy capturing procedures can enhance our understanding of judgments of overall worth, and expand the knowledge base upon which organizational decisions are made.<br>Ph. Abstract:
Studies of the survival and revival of the Liberal Party after 1945 have focused on the Party's strength in the UK's Celtic fringe, its efficacy as a vehicle for protest voting, and the role played by the Party's leaders, particularly Jo Grimond. The reasons why the Liberal Party's constituency associations continued in being and activists continued to be recruited to the Party after a series of disastrous general election results, and the factors explaining the Party's revival in local government have, so far, been overlooked. This thesis draws on a number of new sources of information, including the records of Liberal constituency and district associations and interviews with ordinary Liberal activists from the 1945-64 period, to provide new perspectives on the survival and revival of the Party. It shows how the independence and self-sufficiency of Liberal associations, the recruitment of Liberal activists during the 1945-50 period, and the Party's strength in local government in Yorkshire and north west England were important reasons for the Party's survival. A new wave of recruitment after 1955, inspired by the leadership ofGrimond and the new policies he and others devised and popularised, facilitated the Liberal revival, but a key factor previously unidentified was the development of early forms of community politics by Liberal activists in a number of towns and cities in England and Scotland. Decisions by activists to concentrate on local elections led to an explosion in the number of Liberal councillors, particularly in suburban areas, and drew more activists into the Party. This change in the Party's strategy, which has influenced the development of Liberal politics since 1964, was derived from grass-roots activists rather than the Liberal leadership, although the Party's Local Government Department had an important role to play after 1960.

The purpose of this study was to analyze a nonunion grievance procedure and its relationship to employee attitudes toward their jobs and toward unionization. The analysis had three main focuses of concern. First, an investigation was made of the underlying dimensions of grievance procedures. Second, an assessment was made of employee satisfaction with a unique grievance procedure established for their use. Areas of inquiry were selected based on the concept of procedure multidimensionality. Third, the relationship between employee perceptions of the grievance procedure, job satisfaction, and employee attitudes toward union representation were investigated. This line of inquiry was based on the proposition that the availability of a grievance procedure in a nonunion setting reduces the likelihood that employees will perceive a need for union representation, and that the strength of this association depends on the procedure's acceptability to the employees. The findings show the presence of five salient subdimensions of grievance procedures, that is, critical elements necessary for such a system to be judged acceptable for use by employees for resolving work related problems. Moreover, the data lends strong support for the belief that satisfaction with a grievance procedure available for use is strongly associated with an individual's intention to vote for representation by a labor union if given the opportunity to do so.<br>Ph. L'histoire de l'art ne saurait se réduire à celle de quelques grands noms. De nombreux intervenants méconnus ont joué un rôle décisif dans la diffusion et la réception de la production artistique de leur époque. Parmi ces acteurs discrets, les deux photographes français Pierre Joly (1925-1992) et Véra Cardot (1920-2003), associés en 1959, ont accompagné, durant plus de trente ans, les œuvres d'environ cinq-cents architectes et artistes plasticiens contemporains. Acquis en 1997 par le Centre Pompidou, le fonds réunissant l'ensemble de leurs archives offre un témoignage exceptionnel sur l'art et l'architecture du XXe siècle. Cette thèse se propose d'étudier cet ensemble, en grande partie inédit, à travers une approche historique et poïétique, en mettant au jour moins un style qu'une méthode. Elle aborde l'itinéraire des deux photographes en le replaçant dans son contexte artistique, culturel et politique, puis met en évidence les principales caractéristiques de cette méthode (travail en duo, compagnonnage artistique, technique du reportage, stratégie du retrait, pratique séquentielle) par l'analyse détaillée du corpus. La portée critique et engagée de ces photographies est ensuite analysée, à travers l'étude de leur exploitation éditoriale, en particulier dans les publications consacrées au mouvement de l'« architecture-sculpture ». De simples archives, leurs photographies se font œuvres, d'allographe, le regard se fait autographe<br>Art history is not only the fact of famous artists, but largely relies on a lot of discrete actors who contribute to art diffusion and reception. Among them, the two french photographers Pierre Joly (1925-1992) and Véra Cardot (1920-2003), who associated themselves in 1959, have accompanied the work of more than five hundred architects and artists of the twentieth century. Far from being simple archives, their snapshots, acquired by the Centre Pompidou in 1997, offer a precious lighting as well as an unique contribution to the study of contemporary art. This dissertation studies the whole collection from a historical and poietical point of vue, and show that this work must be seen as the result of a method. Firstly, the cultural, artistic and political influences of this atypical duo are detailled, and the main characteristics of their method (collective work, friendship with artists, journalistic format, sequential work) are precised with the study of the corpus. Then, the critical potential of their work is evidenced by the study of the publications, particularly those talking about the artists related to the « architecture-sculpture » movement. Last but not least, the examination of the « experimental and abstract » part of the Fonds Cardot-Joly demonstrates the creative part of their work, oscillating from the beginning between art and document. Current research on network use in the labor market focuses primarily on network morphology. In this dissertation, I use hierarchical regression to examine the influence of macro-level context on network use in job search.This study relies on a unique data set that combines individual job history data for years 1985 through 2001 collected by the Survey of Social Dynamics and Migration in Russia (SSMDR) in 40 regions in 2001-2002 and corresponding regional macro-economic data published by Goskomstat, the State Statistical Committee of the Russian Federation.The first question of this study focuses on what accounts for the temporal and regional variation in personal network use in the Russian labor market. I find that, for the post-Soviet period, increase in network use in job search can be attributed to the growth of the private sector: Russian employers are becoming "social capitalists" who take advantage of the resources personal connections can offer. I also find that the chances of finding a new job through personal ties are higher in the regions with larger small business sectors and in the regions with lower economic performance.Next I examine how regional economic performance and unemployment affect workers' chances of getting new jobs in the private sector and in smaller size organizations by means of personal networks. The analysis shows that social networks do lead to employment in the private sector and that this relationship is positively affected by regional economic performance, but not by unemployment rate. I also find here that social ties are likely to lead to new jobs in small organizations, but that this relationship does not vary by region.Finally, I investigate how regional economic performance and unemployment rates affect wages for jobs found through personal networks in the private sector and in small organizations. I find that while the private sector rewards network use, small organizations do not. The relationship between network use and wages does not vary by region. That is, regional economic performance does not have an effect on this relationship.

Abstract:
This dissertation uses the public career of Harvard evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould to examine the place of evolution in American culture from 1960 to 2002. Gould was a professional paleontologist and public science writer who rose to fame through his participation in a series of American controversies over biology and society. Prior to the 1980s, Gould publicly disagreed with other biologists over the relationship between liberalism and scientific research. As a New Left activist, Gould advocated caution over public pronouncements on evolutionary explanations of race and sex. His opponents believed that science could provide objective standards for understanding human difference. This thesis shows how the resurgence of creationism in the context of the New Right brought a new community into dialogue with these generally left-oriented academics. Evolutionary scientists and writers solidified a new evolutionary orthodoxy in their attempt to close ranks against the political, social and intellectual threat of creationism. Gould's intellectual and political struggles with the rise of this Darwinian orthodoxy demonstrate the impact that the American public had on the terms of debate within professional evolutionary biology. By studying the impact of public religious controversy on scientific knowledge production, this dissertation brings a fresh perspective to histories of both American evolutionary science and American cultural formation.<br>History of Science

It wants to contextualize and understand the transformations which were made during the operating period of the pasta factory, also analyzing the methods of advertisement used during that time, and the way with which they attracted the customers, as well as the rotation of employees inside the company. La tesi de doctorat El laberint del jo: Fonaments per a la interpretació del primer teatre de Josep Palau i Fabre (1935 – 1958) –dirigida pel doctor Jaume Mascaró i amb el suport tutoral del doctor Francesc Foguet–, es basa en els canvis conceptuals que caldrà introduir en la interpretació del teatre de Palau i Fabre a partir de la consideració d’un nombre important de textos no publicats. Efectivament, i centrant-nos en el període esmentat, aportem 197 referències inèdites de diferents dimensions i característiques: assaigs llargs, anotacions breus i textos dramàtics, escrits tant en català com en castellà o en francès. Deixant de banda el valor que aquests textos tenen per ells mateixos, cal remarcar que si els afegim a la cronologia de Palau i Fabre per la data d’escriptura, sorgeix un autor considerablement diferent del que coneixíem fins ara a través dels dos volum de l’Obra Literària Completa. Per exemple, aflora un dramaturg que ja el 1948 escrivia uns textos dramàtics en francès que són precursors del teatre de l’absurd. El 1947 també hi ha una resposta a Sartre pel llibre que aquest havia fet sobre Baudelaire. És un assaig llarg, de 47 pàgines, en què Palau ens dóna algunes claus del seu rebuig de l’existencialisme Sartrià. Aquest conjunt de noves referències ens durà a la necessitat de rellegir les obres de Palau i Fabre més des de Heidegger que no pas des de Sartre. En un altre sentit, a través de l’obra fins ara publicada de Palau i Fabre estava clar que, per a ell, Baudelaire era un poeta central i que el veia com el veritable iniciador de la modernitat i de la idea de la desintegració del jo. Per Palau la importància de Baudelaire és únicament comparable a la de Picasso, a l’estudi del qual va dedicar bona part de la seva vida. Tanmateix, Baudelaire era poc present en l’obra coneguda de Palau. En canvi, entre els inèdits que s’estudien a la tesi hi ha treballs d’una extensió considerable dedicats plenament a l’autor de Les Fleurs du Mal. Alguns d’aquests treballs també ens fan entendre de quina manera Baudelaire està al darrera de la crisi espiritual que Palau i Fabre va patir el 1938 i en la qual quallà la figura de l’Alquimista, l’alter ego de Palau i Fabre. Baudelaire està igualment al darrere del trasbals de la idea de bellesa que va allunyar Palau i Fabre estètica i políticament de la resistència cultural catalana de l’interior del país. Els textos inèdits han permès igualment entendre amb més detall la relació intel·lectual amb Artaud, la teoria de la tragèdia de Palau i Fabre –que es remunta a 1935 i a la seva passió per Lorca–, les seves idees al voltant de la mimesi i de l’excés, l’origen del seu concepte de temps teatral nou i, en conjunt, el model de teatre que buscava: no realista, no psicològic i no argumental. Aquests materials també ens han permès elaborar una nova nòmina de personatges de les obres de Palau i Fabre i detectar de quina manera, a partir de 1939 el mite de Faust provocà una profunda metamorfosi en el seu teatre. D'aquí sorgeixen les diverses figures mítiques algunes de les quals són: Prometeu, Don Joan, la Caverna de Plató, els Atrides… Són caràcters que s'enfronten al poder, que van incansablement a la recerca de la veritat, malgrat saber que no la trobaran. I d'aquí també sorgeix el debat de fons sobre quina posició té Palau i Fabre al voltant de termes com rebel·lió o revolució, que són essencials per conciliar les exigències de replegament interior de l’Alquímia amb la recerca d’un teatre que a través de la tragèdia també vol ser polític.<br>The PhD thesis The Labyrinth of The Self: A Basis for The Interpretation of The First Dramatic Works by Josep Palau i Fabre (1935 - 1958), –directed by Dr. Jaume Mascaro and with the tutorial support of Dr. Francesc Foguet– is based on the conceptual changes that will have to be introduced in the interpretation of Palau i Fabre’s dramatic works taking into account an important number of unpublished works. Indeed, focusing in this period, we provide 197 unpublished references of different dimensions and characteristics: long essays, brief notes and dramatic works written in Catalan, Spanish or French. Besides the value that these works have for themselves, it should be noted that if we add them to the chronology of Palau i Fabre according to the date of writing, another author appears, considerably different from the one we used to know from the two volumes of Obra Completa Literària. For example, it shows up a playwright who in 1948 wrote in French pioneering dramatic works of the theatre of the absurd. In 1947 there is also a reply to Sartre's book about Baudelaire. It is a long essay, 47 pages, in which Palau gives some clues of his rejection of Sartre’s existentialism. This set of new references will force us to re-read the works by Palau i Fabre more from Heidegger than from Sartre. In another sense, through his work so far published, it was clear that for Palau i Fabre Baudelaire was a central poet and that he used to consider him the true pioneer of modernity and the idea of the disintegration of the self. For Palau the importance of Baudelaire is comparable to that of Picasso, to the study of which he devoted much of his life. But Baudelaire was not much present in the published work by Palau. In contrast, among the unpublished works that are studied in this thesis there are some works of considerable extent devoted entirely to the author of Les Fleurs du Mal. Some of these works help us to understand how Baudelaire is behind the spiritual crisis that Palau i Fabre suffered in 1938 where the character of the Alchemist was forged, the alter ego of Palau i Fabre. Baudelaire is also behind the upheaval of the idea of beauty that separated Palau i Fabre, both aesthetically and politically, from the Catalan cultural resistance in the country. The unpublished works have also allowed us to understand in greater detail his intellectual relationship with Artaud, the theory of tragedy by Palau i Fabre –dating back to 1935 and his passion for Lorca–, his ideas about mimesis and the excess, the origin of his concept of a new theatrical time and, overall, the model of theatre he was looking for: not realistic, not psychological, not a plot. This material has also allowed us to elaborate a new list of characters of Palau i Fabre’s works and discover how from 1939 the Faustian myth caused a profound metamorphosis in his theatre. Hence arise the various mythical figures such as: Prometheus, Don Juan, Plato's cave, the Atrides ... Characters that face the power, who go tirelessly in search of truth, despite knowing that they will not find it. And there also arises the fundamental debate on Palau i Fabre’s position concerning terms like rebellion or revolution, which are essential to reconcile the demands for inside fold of Alchemy with the search of a theatre that through tragedy wants to be also political.

Les clichés sont généralement perçus, pensés et jugés de manière strictement dépréciative comme relevant d'un raté du discours ou de l’œuvre d’art qui renvoient à une aliénation et une an-esthésie. Dégager le paradigme d'hostilité qui prévaut à leur appréhension, autant que le modèle ordinaire de reconnaissance et de désignation du phénomène permettent, au contraire, d'entrevoir une aporie des clichés entre normativité et aberration. The approach is mainly based on three directions: a commentary of Gilles Deleuze and his use of the notion cliché; an epistemological and genealogical investigation combining the contributions of literary studies and philosophy from an aesthetic point of view; an analysis of American films by Joe Dante, Brian de Palma, David Lynch, John Carpenter and Paul Verhoeven. Clichés are generally perceived, reflected and judged in a strictly depreciative way as a failure of the discourse or as failure for the works of art, a failure that refers to alienation and anesthesia. Identifying the paradigm of hostility that prevails in their apprehension, as much as the ordinary model of recognition and designation of the phenomenon allows, on the contrary, to glimpse an aporia of clichés between normativity and aberration. This project investigated the relations between recalled job-satisfaction, ability, and task demands in Vietnam era helicopter aviators. It attempted to detect and describe factors present in a dangerous combat environment which may influence some individuals to enjoy and take satisfaction at being exposed to, creating, and participating in the dangerous and life threatening violence involved in helicopter combat. Participants were 30 pilots and crew members retired from the 335th Assault Helicopter Company who were all actively involved in combat in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. This study found that developing a love of war is correlated with anger during combat. The love of war is not correlated with PTSD processes nor is it correlated with specific personality dimensions. The love of war research is a new area. The questions were used to operationalize the love of war represent a significant limitation. This method of operationalizing the love of war concept does not make fine discriminations has questionable content validity. To facilitate accuracy in discriminating between participants when conducting future research in the area, researchers could benefit from constructing a measure with greater content validity.

Kvinnoforskare är eniga att det under historiens gång existerat en kvinnlig underordning. I hemlivet hade de två könen olika uppgifter; kvinnans plats var i hemmet, där hon tog hand om hushållet och familjen, medan mannen skulle arbeta utomhus. Feminismens frammarsch innebar att fler kvinnor började arbeta, trots att idealet fortfarande var att kvinnan utövade sina moderliga egenskaper, vilket hon skulle göra även på arbetsplatsen. Därmed blev olika yrken snabbt könskodade. Denna uppsats syftar till att undersöka platsannonser i lokaltidningen Nya Wermlands-Tidningen och hur de speglar maktrelationen mellan kvinnor och män i arbetslivet åren 1885-1905. Detta har gjorts genom en kritisk diskursanalys vilken fokuserar på adjektiv som använts för att beskriva den manliga respektive kvinnliga arbetaren samt en kvantitativ studie av antalet platsannonser som riktade sig till eller publicerades av män respektive kvinnor. Resultaten visar hur de adjektiv som beskriver den kvinnliga arbetaren fokuserar mer på hennes personlighetsdrag jämfört med de som används för att beskriva män, vilka istället fokuserar mer på yrkeskompetens. Fler kvinnor än män efterfrågades av arbetsgivare samt sökte arbete genom platsannonser, vilket speglar hur fler kvinnor var benägna att arbeta. Arbetssökande kvinnor kom att under de senare åren mer frekvent använda sig av adjektiv som oftare använts för att beskriva män, såväl som att söka sig till mansdominerade yrken, och utmanade således de manliga privilegierna.<br>Throughout history women have been seen to have a subordinate role in comparison to men. In the domestic life, the two genders were assigned different tasks. Women were meant to stay indoors, taking care of the household and their family, while men were meant to work outside. As the feminist movement became more widespread throughout Sweden, more women started working, though the standard of women staying indoors, practicing her motherly instincts, remained at her place of work. Thus, different professions were labeled with being either feminine or masculine. The purpose of this essay is to investigate job advertisements in the Swedish local newspaper Nya Wermlands-Tidningen and how they reflect contemporary power structures between men and women in working life in Sweden during the years 1885-1905. This has been carried out through a critical discourse analysis which focuses upon adjectives describing the workers as well as a quantitative study of how many advertisements were addressed to or published by women and men respectively. Results show how working women were described with adjectives that focused more upon their personality than those which were used to describe men, which instead focused more upon their experience in the work field. More women than men were requested by employers as well as sought employment through advertisements, which reflects how more women were prone to work. Job-seeking women were more likely, in the later years, to use adjectives that were previously more common to use when describing men, as well as to seek professions that were dominated by men, challenging the traditional manliness and male privileges.

Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between burnout and social support in Minnesota high school guidance counselors during the l983—84 school year. Social support consisted of: work supervisors, peers, spouses, and friends & relatives. Additionally, the relationships between burnout and four demographic and seven job—related variables were investigated. The demographic variables were: age, sex, marital status, and education. The job-related variables were: opportunity for times-out, percentage of contact with troubled students, student/counselor ratio, instruction on stress and burnout reduction, school setting, school size, and years of counseling experience. Finally, the relationships between burnout and several interactive variables were investigated in order to determine if social support had primarily direct or indirect (buffering) effects. Regression analysis was used to test these relationships. The Following variables were consistently significant throughout the study: 2 social support variables-peer support and supervisor support (both negatively correlated with burnout); 1 demographic variable--age (negatively correlated with burnout), and 2 Job-related variables--percentage of contact with troubled students and student/counselor ratio (respectively, negatively and positively correlated with burnout). Abstract:
The process of determining the contribution of an almost forgotten couturier, Jo Mattli, to the British fashion and textile industry, has resulted in a deep study of the under-researched London couture scene of the mid-twentieth century. This thesis is distinctive in providing object-based evidence of Mattli’s response to the social and financial changes experienced in Britain post World War II, and unusual for using primary documentary evidence to trace the business history of a London couture house. Based on Prown’s model of object-based material culture research, supported by the inter-disciplinary methodologies of socio-cultural, socio-economic, structuralist and oral history, this thesis makes a unique contribution to the body of knowledge of dress history. Using primary evidence to explore the production and consumption of Mattli couture, ready-to-wear, boutique and wholesale clothing, tests and challenges the theoretical perspectives critically analysed in the thesis. A case study using primary Mattli artefacts tests Prown’s methodology. Simmel, Lipovetsky and Bourdieu’s differing theories of the fashion system, taste, and luxury, are analysed, tested and challenged. Barthes’ semiotic theory is tested against image and text, and Lacan’s psychoanalytical theory challenged for its relevance to the consumption of Mattli designs. The changing cultural status of the surviving Mattli garments is illuminated by employing Thompson’s theory of rubbish and Kopytoff’s biography of the object technique. Evidence from primary sources is supported by contemporaneous literature and oral history. The latter is used cautiously but effectively to support the primary evidence, and absence of evidence, in turn upholding and challenging traditional theoretical models. Scientific identification of a small sample of fibres from surviving Mattli garments challenges the assumed perception of luxury as applied to couture fabrics mid-twentieth century. The resulting study contributes to a greater understanding of the design, production and consumption of London couture, identifies both Mattli’s position within London couture and the reasons for him being forgotten. This thesis argues for the rehabilitation of Mattli in dress history and, as the objects provided the most significant evidence, for the importance of object-based research as a primary component of the methodology used in the discipline.

The impact of attire on assessments of job applicants was investigated by creating three dress conditions for two male and two female rates. A formal, intermediate, and casual condition were portrayed for each of the four stimuli. Stimuli were rated on six dimensions relevant to performance as a retail department store manager in a between-subjects design. Results indicate that the role of attire in estimates of performance depends on the sex of the rater and the sex of the ratee. Dissimilar ratings were obtained from males and females who assessed individuals in a particular dress condition. These results indicated that the hypothesized main effects for dress and rater sex were overly simplistic. The implication of this finding for future research is discussed. Findings also suggested the importance of including a reasonable range and portrayal of attire in studies of this type. The inclusion of an intermediate apparel condition showed that raters prefer this attire over formal wear under certain rating conditions. The importance of this finding for future attire research designs is discussed.<br>M.S.

Korean composer Young Jo Lee (b.1943) is considered a precursor of Korean fusion music. In his works, he interlaces elements of traditional Korean music with compositional styles and performances techniques from western musical traditions. This dissertation provides an analysis of Lee's Dodri for Cello and Janggo (1995), one of his most representative works of fusion music. As indicated by the title Dodri (which in Korean means a "movement back and forth"), Lee intended to showcase a friendly interplay of the janggo and the cello, with each instrument playing a leading role that helps bring out the essence of traditional Korean traditional music. In this piece, Lee writes a number of melodies and uses traditional Korean performance techniques for the cello intended to imitate the sound and sentiments of traditional Korean instruments, all while preserving its inherent nature. This kind of fusion, where different musical elements are merged with each other but remain separate enough to maintain their own uniqueness, is significant to Lee's philosophy. This dissertation also describes Lee's efforts to preserve the integrity of traditional Korean music within fusion music and lend new insights regarding traditional Korean musical practice to musicologists, composers, and audiences. Furthermore, this study is intended to serve as a performer's guide for professional cellists new to Lee's music so they may approach Dodri with a greater understanding of the composer's original intentions when first learning the work.

Cette thèse sur la décentralisation théâtrale en Basse-Normandie se propose d’embrasser la période qui va des années 1940 à nos jours, c’est-à-dire du lancement d’une politique nationale de décentralisation dramatique impulsée par JeanneLaurent à la montée en puissance des collectivités territoriales dans le champ des compétences culturelles. A partir de la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale et de la reconstruction de Caen, nous verrons comment les lieux de spectacles se sontdéveloppés dans la région, notamment à travers la figure emblématique de la décentralisation théâtrale en Basse-Normandie : Jo Tréhard. Comédien autodidacte, metteur en scène, directeur de compagnie et de théâtre, fondateur de multiples lieux de spectacle (Le Tonneau, le Théâtre – Maison de la Culture, puis la Comédie de Caen) et d’un festival de Normandie.
