This research has as object the antagonisms of the image of Juan Manuel de Rosas in the Brazilian press. It seeks to establish a panorama of the political history of Rosas, to examine the perception about him in Brazilian historiography and, finally, to analyze directly the nineteenth-century journalistic sources. In the primary sources, the Brazilian press’ approaches to various aspects of Rosas and Rosism are investigated, such as the Desert Campaign, the Mazorca, the “extraordinary powers”, the resistance to European invasions. It also discusses the influence of americanism and civilizing discourse in the way Brazilians saw Rosas. The core of the work is the opposition between rosistas and antirrosistas in Brazil.

Full textThis work analyzes the trajectory of Pedro de Angelis, a scholar interested in collecting documents about the past and the present of the region of Rio de la Plata, and the history of the formation of his collections and archives during and within Juan Manuel de Rosas' second governorship. De Angelis was an Italian who arrived in Buenos Aires in 1827 and was one of the leading public writers of Rosism. He endeavored to gather documents to his own collection and also to publish them in printed editions, which produced a series of documentary sets between 1835 and 1852, while he increasingly approached the governor and even became the archivist of the Archivo General de la Provincia de Buenos Aires. The “Colección de obras y documentos relativos a la historia antigua y moderna de las Províncias del Río de la Plata” edited from 1835 to 1839, his best-known work, was one of these documentary sets. We analyze the “Colección”, which he dedicated to Rosas, as an archive that the scholar formatted about the past of the Argentine Confederation. De Angelis sustained and promoted the discourse of the regime he worked for through the documents he gathered in the "Colección" and in another documentary set that he collected between 1843 and 1851, the “Archivo Americano y Espíritu de la Prensa del Mundo.” With the “Archivo Americano,” Pedro de Angelis collected and brought to the public those documents he considered sources of the present. He thus constructed an archive of his living time to counteract Juan Manuel de Rosas’ opponents, such as the 1837 generation, for his contemporaries and subjects of the future to read. Finally, we study how he formed his own particular collection of documents and works, which he accumulated from mid-1830's until 1852 in his library, thanks to the "commerce of history" that occurred in the Platine region, and how it has become a National Library of the Brazilian Empire's fond in 1853. In a context of discursive dichotomy between civilization and barbarism, De Angelis used his collections and archives to construct a given memory for the Buenos Aires government, which did not consider the investment in custody and organization of documents or the promotion of local history writing as priorities. Moreover, his documentary assemblages eventually helped to establish himself as a scholar concerned with document preservation and knowledge production.

Abstract: Initially being a concept thought by the rosista intellectuality, the americanismo emerged as an ideological justification inside the Rosas government political discourse, featured by the idea that the struggle of the Argentinean Confederation against the European forces was the fight to preserve the independence itself, and the Argentinean cause expressed the proper American cause, what incurred in a polarization between the Rosa's partisans and its opponents who were considered traitor of the political independence (MYERS 1995). It is right in the middle of this quarrel for the definition of the americanismo concept that both: the Rosas discourse and Domingos F. Sarmiento's (1811-1888) political writings shows their reasoning strategies around the concept and its usage as a political language. This essay has the aim in analyzing the ideas and the political languages used by Sarmiento in three of his wide writing collection: Facundo (1845), Viajes por Europa, África y American (1846-1847) and Argirópolis (1850). Moving forward, the next step is to demonstrate the interactions of his explanatory model towards his context and the political situation of the Argentinean Confederation during the first half of the 19th century, when Juan Manoel de Rosas ruled the Buenos Aires state and stablished a gradual hegemony over the whole country. Besides that, we tried to put in evidence the disputes between the writers that supported the Rosas government and Sarmiento among the concept of americanismo or sistema americano, and by establishing some contact point with other concepts such as sovereignty, political legitimacy and republicanism inside the debates occurred in the heat of the Argentinean political History

Full textHow do propaganda and representation, these two political weapons, influence people's memory and, thus, their history? How, in the specific context of Rosist Argentina, did the approximation of this binomial operate so that disparate spaces and populations were, little by little, brought together and could share in fine unifying principles? This work aims to explore the bases of a power and a system built around a man - for some, an enlightened despot - as part of a vast process, which in retrospect, proved critical for the emergence of a common, if not national, sense of belonging. From Buenos Aires, his home province, Juan Manuel de Rosas dictated f o r nearly twenty-three years the fate of a large population that had a history of its own but was deprived from a proper memory. This is a historical fact. Rosas’ undeniable contribution to a country’s national, political and identity build-up o f a country in motion inspired radically opposed analyses, which, moved by diverging and sometimes opportunistic reasons, memoirists and politicians have presented and historians have questioned and argued with force close sometimes to controversy. Rosas, the restorer of the Law and father of the Argentine nation, tyrant and destroyer of the Republic ; it is the tension between these two poles that we have tried to position ourselves in order to analyze, without taking sides , the contribution of this man to the foundations of a large building, modern Argentina, which was perfected, following Caseros, by the Romantic and Liberal thinkers who had fought so fiercely y the « Restaurador de las Leyes »

Full text[EN] Manuel Verdeguer Beltrán is the most relevant Spanish double bass player of the 20th century, with great recognition in the Americas. Born in 1908 in Valencia, he began playing the violoncello and subsequently consecrated himself as a soloist and pedagogue of the double bass, praised among others by the teachers Lamote de Grignon and Joaquín Turina The study of the time in which he developed his artistic career in Spain has allowed us to discover the economic crisis caused to the interpreters by the disappearance of silent films, as well as in the knowledge of the regulation that governed the working conditions of musicians. He played the double bass soloist position in the Municipal Orchestra of Valencia and the National Concert Orchestra in the period of the Republic. Later he joined the National Orchestra of Spain created in the Franco era. In 1953, he left Spain to occupy the positions of soloist of the National Orchestra of Colombia and professor at the Conservatory of Bogotá. Later he moved to Venezuela as soloist of the Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and professor of the Higher School of Music "José Ángel Lamas" of Venezuela. Invited by cellist Pau Casals, he was appointed Professor of the Conservatory of Puerto Rico and soloist of the Symphony Orchestra of Bogotá. He premiered the famous Tubin concert for double bass and orchestra performing the first recording of that concert He had no disciples in Spain; but he did have them in America, creating a prestigious double bass school.

Full textThe intrastate Colombian conflict has accumulated attempts of negotiated pacification with several guerrilla groups. If, in one hand, there is Andrés Pastrana’s (1998-2002) failure to achieve peace with the FARC, in the other hand, the current president’s attempt, Juan Manuel Santos (2010-2018) managed to stablish an unprecedented peace accord with the guerrilla. Why such accord was possible in 2016 but not in 2002? To answer this question, this research uses the Most Similar Systems comparative method in order to examine the hypothesis that the Colombia of current president Santos enjoyed better state capacities to undergo a well-succeeded peace process than during Andrés Pastrana’s years. Through literature review related to the State Capacity theory as well as the historic literature of the Colombian conflict, this research lists 12 variables grouped in three groups so that they can be tested in both peace processes. Besides an introduction, theoretical framework and methodological framework, this dissertation divides itself in four chapters: (i) history of the Colombian conflict, (ii) analysis of socioeconomic variables, (iii) analysis of strategic-military variables, (iiii) analysis of the main actors related to the conflict. As a conclusion, the research finds that better economic and military aspects, as well as better institutional cohesion, were crucial in achieving the peace agreement of 2016. However, understanding how such causal relation worked between these aspects and the positive outcome of 2016 will demand new deeper research on specific aspects.

Full textExile is studied through the fictional works of three Argentine authors that belong, having respect to their dates of birth, to the same generation (despite the fact that they all constitute specific cases): Copi (Raul Damonte Taborda) (1939-1987); Manuel Puig (born in 1932) and Juan Jose Saer (born in 1937). The incidence of exile is studied through their texts, evaluating its impact on the writer's language, but also upon the elements of narrative speech and the shaping of the fictional world by the novelist. In this work, essentially linguistic and thematic, a variety of approaches is applied to questioning the texts themselves: l'Uruguayen, la Vida est. Un tango and la Vie est un tango, la Cité des rats, le Bal des folles, by Copi. From Manuel Puig six novels are considered, excluding the last one, Sangre de amor correspondido. From Juan Jose Saer we have studied"a Medio borrar" (long story), el Entenado and Glosa (novels). Two recorded interviews, one with Copi and the second with Saer, are appended

Full textFinding the voice of the others through borrowings, quotations of and references to the tango was what many among Argentine writers wanted to do from 1960 to 1980. Making use of lines and excerpts from the most emblematic songs of Gardel, Discépolo, Manzi. (" Mi Buenos Aires querido ", " Anclao en París ", " Cambalache ", " Volver "), novelists like Julio Cortázar, in " Libro de Manuel ", Manuel Puig in " Boquitas pintadas ", and Daniel Moyano in " Libro de navíos y borrascas " together with poets such as Juan Gerlman for instance, managed through an intertextuality that establishes a lineage revealing like-mindedness with the tango, to achieve a literature which reconciles the erudite with the popular, the local with the universal and makes familiar words that political, economic and social events seemed to have driven apart

Full textThe thesis was inspired by the main theme of the "Respuesta a sor Filotea" as well as the polemical content of the other two letters. The introduction briefly presents the historical context in which the polemic took place. It also explains the objectives of the thesis and comments some of the critical work related to this theme. Chapters one and two analyse the "Carta Atenagorica," focusing on the theological discussion.
Chapters three and four analyse the "Carta de sor Filotea." Chapter three examines the intentions of the bishop of Puebla when he published Sor Juana's letter under the title of "Atenagorica." The analysis of the bishop's letter is in chapter four.
Chapter five examines, in the light of the preceding chapters, the "Respuesta a sor Filotea" and presents the conclusion.

Full textIn this doctoral dissertation, we are studying a selection of both Mexican and French literary works related to the historic events of the Second French Intervention in Mexico (1862-1867) and of the Second Mexican Empire (1864-1867). This body of works has been published between the XIXth and the XXIth century and has been selected, both because their poetic and political thoughts are emblematic of this period and because they have contributed to the construction of a Mexican cultural and identity iconography. We have decided to select the fiction and theatrical genres, to carry out a comparative and diachronic analysis. The decision of which literary works and authors to include has been made based on how both the French Intervention and the way it has been depicted in literature, have been dealt with in particular in each literary work and each author we considered to studied. The studied novels belong to the sub-genre of serialized fiction in the XIXth century with, on the French side, Benito Vázquez (1869) by Lucien Biart and Doña Flor (1877) by Gustave Aimard and, on the Mexican side, Clemencia (1869) by Manuel Altamirano and El Cerro de las Campanas (1868) by Juan Mateos. As far as theatre plays are concerned, we have carried out a comparative study of both Corona de Sombra (1943) by Rodolfo Usigli and Charlotte et Maximilien (1945) by Maurice Rostand. We have completed our analysis with a complementary study of El Tuerto es Rey (1970) by Carlos Fuentes. Regarding more contemporaneous historic and literary creations, we chose to include Noticias del Imperio (1987) by Fernando del Paso and Yo, el francés by Jean Meyer (2002). This corpus allows to carry out a comparative, linguistic, semiotic and literary analysis of afore-mentioned works. Such analysis calls for a thorough reflection on the interpretation of conflict, an armed and political conflict which influenced both History and Mexican and French literary productions
