El escrito gira en torno tanto a la campaña militar de 1856-°©‐‑ 57, como también de la figura del héroe nacional Juan Santamaría, como eje primordial de la creación artística al servicio de la invención civilista proyectada por los “padres” del Estado Liberal en Costa Rica. En estas páginas se abordan algunos de los productos artísticos que surgieron a propósito de la Campaña del 56, entre ellos el Monumento Nacional y la Estatua de Juan Santamaría, como también referentes iconográficos de la gesta patria en la labor plástica de Enrique Echandi y Francisco Amighetti, artistas de gran relevancia en la historia del arte costarricense.

On 28 February 1885 Guatemala's Liberal dictator, Justo Rufino Barrios, declared the Union of Central America, and made it plain that this would be achieved through force of arms if the four other Central American Republics did not consent to his decree. On 5 and 6 March, as Costa Rica's Liberal state began to plan a popular mobilisation against the Guatemalan threat, an article appeared in the pages of El Diario de Costa Rica, written by a resident Honduran man of letters, Alvaro Contreras. It was called ‘Un héroe annómino’. Curiously, though, this hero is not anonymous at all. The article soon reveals that his name is Juan Santamaría, a humble footsoldier who, during the Battle of Rivas in 1856, had volunteered to burn down the Mesón de Guerra from where William Walker's filibusters were decimating Costa Rican troops with rifle fire. The attempt was successful, but Santamaría sacrificed his life in the process. The invention of Costa Rica's ‘almost unknown soldier’ had begun.

Chronic UVA exposure results in elevated reactive oxygen species in skin which leads to photoaging characterized as upregulated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and loss of collagen. Therefore, natural antioxidants are hailed as promising agents to be utilized against photoaging. In the current study, reynosin and santamarine, two known sesquiterpene lactones isolated from Artemisia scoparia, were analyzed for their anti-photoaging properties in UVA-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). Results showed that UVA irradiation (8 J/cm2) upregulated the MMP-1 secretion and expression, and suppressed collagen production, which were significantly reverted by santamarine treatment (10 µM). Although both reynosin and santamarine exhibited ROS scavenging abilities, reynosin failed to significantly diminish UVA-stimulated MMP-1 release. UVA-irradiated HDFs showed increased collagen production when treated with santamarine. As a mechanism to suppress MMP-1, santamarine significantly suppressed the UVA-induced phosphorylation of p38 and JNK and nuclear translocation of p-c-Fos and p-c-Jun. Santamarine promoted collagen I production via relieving the UVA-induced suppression on TGF-β and its downstream activator Smad2/3 complex. Antioxidant properties of santamarine were also shown to arise from stimulating Nrf2-dependent expression of antioxidant enzymes SOD-1 and HO-1 in UVA-irradiated HDFs. In conclusion, santamarine was found to be a promising natural antioxidant with anti-photoaging properties against UVA-induced damages in HDFs.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the noise generated by aeronautical operations around Juan Santamaría Airport and its compatibility with the land use and the proposed zoning around the airport. Aircraft noise can produce discomfort, interference with daily activities, and excessive vibrations; hence, land use planning around airports is of importance.
 Maps were prepared through computational models representing the noise levels generated by the operations of the airport. The operations were analyzed by aircraft type, schedules, and flight tracks, for 2013 and projections for: 2016, 2026, and 2036. Noise level data were collected with a sound level meter at 28 points surrounding the airport.
 Comparing the annual maps of 2013 and 2036 it was determined that 41,24 % of the analyzed area will present clearly perceivable increases (5 dB(A) to 10 dB(A)), and 1,36 % of the area will have double loudness increases (10 dB(A) to 14 dB(A)).
 The 2016 maps show locations where it is recommended to incorporate solutions in the construction regulation that reduce between 25 dB and 30 dB in the residential and scholar areas located within 65 dB(A) and 70 dB(A), such as Coco, Rincón Monge, Rincón Herrera, and Bajo Sorda. This finding is supported by field measurements.
 The proposed zoning was contrasted against the yearly day-night average sound level of 2036. The biggest issue of excessive aircraft noise is located near the west runway where a range above the 75 dB(A) is expected. Any edification of permanent residence must be banned in here.

El trabajo que se ofrece a continuación se diseña a partir de un conjunto de cuestionamientos o dudas, que de modo relativamente frecuente, diversos sectores de la sociedad costarricense han llevado a cabo sobre aspectos esenciales del héroe costarricense Juan Santamaría y de las acciones que se le atribuyen en el marco de la Campaña Nacional contra los Filibusteros, efectuada entre los años 1856-1857. Se procura abordar estos cuestionamientos tomando como base la evidencia empírica que las fuentes históricas ofrecen al respecto, así como diversa información que se desprende de las múltiples publicaciones que tratan, tanto sobre la gesta bélica del siglo XIX, así como de la figura del soldado alajuelense en particular.

Nos congrega la conmemoración de los 60 años de la Revista Colombiana de Obstetricia y Ginecología (RCOG), la revista médica más antigua del país. abstract: The Legacy of the Filibuster War: National Identity, Collective Memory, and Cultural Anti-Imperialism is a dissertation project analyzing how the Filibuster War becomes a staple for Costa Rican national identity. This work presents several challenges to traditional theories of modernization in the creation of nationalism. By focusing on the development of cultural features defined by the transformation of collective memory, this project argues that national identity is a dynamic process defined according to local, national, and international contexts. Modernization theories connect the development of nationalism to the period of consolidation of the nation-state, usually during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The Costa Rican case demonstrates that, while modernization coincides with the creation of symbols of official nationalism, the Filibuster War became a symbol of national identity beginning in the 1850s, and it has been changing throughout the twentieth century. Threats to sovereignty and imperialist advances served to promote the memory of the Filibuster War, while local social transformations, as the abolition of the army and internal political conflict forced drastic changes on the interpretation of the war and the establishment of a national narrative that adjusts to social transformation.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>Ph.D. History 2013
