Full textThis doctoral thesis researches the so-called Jewish Holocaust Theology, i.e. reflections of rabbis and Jewish thinkers concerning Nazi persecution and its implications on the religious level. The thesis concentrates on one specific Jewish religious stream: North-American Modern Orthodoxy, represented here by its most important thinkers on the Shoah - Joseph Soloveitchik, Eliezer Berkovits and Irving Greenberg. The research reveals their reflections, inserts them into the more general context of Jewish thought and analyzes their contribution to post-Holocaust Judaism.

Full textThis doctoral thesis is a review of the work of Marc-Alain Ouaknin (Paris, 1957), rabbi and philosopher, influenced by three key authorship: Hannah Arent (action), Paul Ricoeur (triple mimesis) and Emmanuel Levinas (fertility). The analysis examines the collection of publications that appeared between 1991 and 2010. From the crossroads of tradition and biblical hermeneutical philosophy shows the basis for teaching reading: stresses the importance of facilitating temporary-space where the human becomes an anthropology questioning (quoibilité) puts reading modes (intentional and existential), shows the importance of the link between the protagonists (student, teacher and text) and highlights concomitant movements (caress, library-pharmacology and ethics).

Chasing Yiddishkayt: Music for Accordion, Klezmorim Concertino, Strings, and Percussion is a four-movement composition that combines the idioms of klezmer music with aspects of serialism. I aimed to infuse the piece with a sense of yiddishkayt: a recognizable, rooted Jewishness. In order to accomplish this goal, I based each movement on a different klezmer style. I used the improvisatory-style of the Romanian Jewish doina as the foundation for Movement 1. For Movements 2 through 4 I selected tunes from the 1927 Hoffman Manuscript-a fake-book assembled by Joseph Hoffman in Philadelphia for his son, Morris-as the starting point in my process, and also for the generation of pitch material. Each movement places the tunes in a different serialist context through the use of abstraction, manipulation and regeneration. The orchestration of the composition is designed as a modified a concerto structure that alternates between featuring the accordion and contrasting the klezmorim concertino (fiddle, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and accordion) with the orchestra. Depending on the context, the percussion section functions as part of the concertino and the orchestra. In the monograph, I place the composition in a historical and musical context. In Chapter 1, I trace my travels to Kraków, Poland for the Jewish Culture Festival, where I began to explore and understand the intricate language of this music. In Chapter 2, I provide a summary of the history of klezmer music by looking at it through the context of a musical style that has developed across regional and cultural boundaries, and has drawn influences as far and wide as the Turkish maqam system in Constantinople, to the Moldavian Roms (Gypsies), to czarist Military bands, to jazz and swing, and to rock and roll. I conclude the chapter with a brief survey of four contemporary klezmer musicians of the new generation. In Chapter 3, I look at the modal structure of klezmer music. I used the work of Joshua Horowitz as the starting point for my research on various modal progressions and tetrachords. I then applied this research by analyzing a set of thirty freilechs in the Hoffman manuscript. In Chapter 4, I present an analysis of my composition as well as historical background for the tunes that I used as source material. I outline my future research goals in Chapter 5.

Abstract: Spinoza's philosophy represented an important counterpoint to the modern philosophy, although the Dutch philosopher followed all the philosophical and scientific debate of his time. In the face of the religious and political problems of the seventeenth century and the solutions to the problems of international politics and inclusion adopted by the Dutch Republic, Spinoza presents himself as an important alternative for the production of a new philosophical discourse, charged with subversion and political liberation, which led, in turn, to an emancipation of the philosophical thought from both religious inspirations and mere reduction of ontological knowledge to scientific knowledge. This subversion will unfold not only in religious criticism, but also in the rooting of the imaginative power that creates a new language and new bodily expressions

Full textThe present doctorate thesis expounds, initially, some definitions about Orthodox Judaism, varieties of Orthodox Judaism, its educational models and a brief history of the orthodox Jewish community of São Paulo in order to assist the learning and discussion about how the technological inclusion and the virtual interactions of its schools students take place in this context. It was attempted to demonstrate how the orthodox rabbis establish rules and prohibitions concerning the use of computers and of the Internet, making the interaction between their communitys members and outsiders of their own physical environments more difficult because they fear that technological changes will drive their followers to abandon practices that ensure the continuity of their community. Considering that today the virtual enclosure is increasingly necessary to integrating the citizens into society, the treatise at hand approaches an important issue in a pioneer way expounding what the Internet represents to these individuals and implies the hardness faced by the ultraorthodox rabbis to solve the difficulties related to the use of the new technologies and of the Internet into the secular study programs in their schools. For the present tractate, elaborated between the years of 2004 and 2007, theoretical formulations available in articles, magazines, and other studies about the orthodox Jewish community were employed, as well as an extensive field research interviewing this community `s authorities and leaders was performed. Another source of the acquired and analyzed data are questionnaires regarding the use of computers and of the Internet, responded by the principals of all Jewish orthodox schools in the city of São Paulo accredited by the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture and by their students of the 10th and 11th grades (High School).

Full textIn certain respects the mainstream Orthodox Jewish community in Britain, fully engaged and integrated into British life, appears to offer an exemplar of a Modern Orthodox Judaism. However the term minhag Anglia may be used to capture the nature of the often unsystematic blending of Jewishness and Britishness that can characterise Anglo-Jewish practice. This paper considers whether the broadly unthinking nature of minhag Anglia precludes its ability to function as a strategy for Modern Orthodox Judaism.
