Optical absorption and emission intensities are investigated for trivalent neodymium ions in single crystals of CaF2 and YLF. Oscillator strengths for numerous transitions are measured from absorption spectra recorded at room temperature. Corresponding oscillator strengths are calculated by using the Judd–Ofelt theory and are compared with the measured values. Dysprosium-doped borate glasses were prepared and their physical properties, optical absorption and fluorescence characteristics were investigated. Among three Judd-Ofelt parameters, the O2 increased and the O6 decreased with an increasing Na2O content. The Branching ratio of blue/yellow emission from the 4F9/2 level increased and its lifetime decreased with Na2O content. Pr3+ and Dy3+-doped Ge-S-I glasses were synthesized and their optical properties studied for active photonic device applications, such as optical fiber amplifiers at 1.31 μm and mid-IR fiber lasers.
