Abstract:
This chapter discusses figure skating in Europe after World War II. The war in Europe ended in May 1945, but not until atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August did Japan capitulate. Formal terms of surrender were signed a month later. The International Skating Union Council met in July 1946 and set dates for the resumption of competition. European Championships commenced at Davos on January 31, 1947, while the World Championships followed two weeks later at Stockholm. Participation at the championships demonstrated the sport's durability and stature. The ladies' and pairs' events boasted more entries than in 1939. Not surprisingly, men's events had fewer entries. Participation increased in the men's event in 1948 but not to the prewar level.

Abstract:
The entry of the USA into the war changed the dynamics of life at the American embassy in Grosvenor Square. Edith and E. F. Penrose became directly involved in planning the international conferences which would shape the postwar world, including Hot Springs, and dealing with the immediate problems of the end of the war such as the Morgenthau Plan. Edith and E. F. Penrose married in 1944 and Edith bore a son, Trevan, in July 1945. Edith’s brothers Jack and Harvey both had distinguished careers in the US Air Force in North Africa and Italy before Jack was shot down in early 1945. Both Edith and Penrose were directly involved in the creation of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration which dealt with refugee issues, and in supporting Winant and Eleanor Roosevelt during the formation of the United Nations and the first General Assembly in London in 1946.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Ray Bradbury's early disappointments in getting his science fiction stories published. Publication of Bradbury's new short stories, written in collaboration with Henry Hasse, in science fiction pulps proved to be a far more difficult proposition than it had been with “Pendulum.” In October 1941, for example, Julius Schwartz was able to place “Gabriel's Horn” in Captain Future, but it reached print only in the spring 1943 issue. This chapter considers Bradbury's limited success with any of his science fiction stories after ending his collaboration with Hasse, including “Eat, Drink, and Be Wary,” which he sold to John Campbell for the “Probability Zero” contest in the July issue of Astounding; only “The Candle” appeared in print during the rest of the year—in the November 1942 issue of Weird Tales.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Richard Durham's career in journalism and scriptwriting. As Durham moved through the early 1940s, he had yet to snag a full-time writing job. He began as a freelance writer for the NBC radio show The Lone Ranger, probably in July 1943. While his wife Clarice Durham started taking evening classes in early childhood education at Chicago's Pestalozzi Froebel Teachers College, Dick Durham applied to the Summer Radio Institute jointly sponsored by Northwestern University and the NBC network. Finally, in winter 1944, a full-time job offer provided Durham with a springboard onto a new writing path; he was hired by the Chicago Defender as a reporter, and came under the guidance of its editor-in-chief Metz Tulus Paul Lochard. However, he was fired by the newspaper two years later. Durham eventually landed a position as an associate editor and feature writer with a newly created progressive newspaper called the Chicago Star. He also resumed his writing duties for the Chicago Defender's Democracy USA radio series sometime during late summer 1946.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at Beyer's final years. The summer of 1940 was busy for Beyer. She taught piano at a number of schools and private homes around the greater New York area, and the families for whom she taught were central to her social life. She also spent much of July house-sitting for the family of her gifted ten-year-old piano student Roland Leitner, with whom she was particularly close and to whom she dedicated one of her last works, the Sonatina in C, in 1943. The chapter then examines Beyer's illness, which became acute in 1941. According to Bertha Reynolds, Beyer received a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in June of that year, and Reynolds later believed that to be the cause of her death. However, according to Beyer's death certificate, she had received a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as early as 1938.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the period that unceremoniously ended the Italian military occupation in France during World War II. Starting in late July 1943, the Italians set in motion their gradual disengagement from southeastern France. In theory all units, with the exception of a few coastal divisions, were supposed to return to Italy by midnight on September 9. Officially the Italians were moving their troops from France in order to shore up Italy’s defenses. The end of the occupation matched its beginnings in June 1940 and September 1942, both in its strategic improvisation and utter disorganization. This chapter explains how the disorganization of the Italian Army, combined with the sudden announcement of the Franco-Italian armistice, changed what should have been a gradual disengagement from southeastern France to a complete rout back into Italy. It shows that the Italian Army commanders in the French Riviera, caught completely unaware by the declaration of the armistice, had to make a hasty and disorganized retreat, with entire units ending up captured by the Germans.

Abstract:
Did Europe’s ‘age of catastrophe’ (1914–1945) represent a break with the past or did it amplify the tensions of the preceding era? Was it a ‘parenthesis’ or a ‘revelation’? Historians have usually taken the latter view and have dismissed popular nostalgia for the period before 1914 as mere hindsight. Yet Europeans had good reason to be nostalgic. The period 1900–1914 had its moments of crisis and ominous trends (e.g. anti-Semitism), but it was essentially defined by stability, democratization, and significant improvements in social conditions. Nor should one exaggerate the desire for war in society or among Europe’s political elites. Prior to the July Crisis, a great Continental war seemed neither inevitable nor likely, all of which has implications for our understanding of Europe’s later descent into barbarism. Simply put, the dynamics of violence and instability that characterized the ‘age of catastrophe’ were largely generated during that period.
