RESUMENEl objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre los mecanismos de financiación y de control de las instituciones religiosas por los laicos en las primeras décadas de la conquista y colonización de Hispanoamérica. Investigar sobre la inversión laica en lo sagrado supone en un primer lugar aclarar la historiografía sobre laicos, religión y dinero en las sociedades de Antiguo Régimen y su trasposición en América, planteando una mirada desde el punto de vista de las motivaciones múltiples de los actores seglares. A través del ejemplo de restituciones, donaciones y legados en losAndes, se explora el papel de los laicos españoles, y también de las poblaciones indígenas, en el establecimiento de la densa red de instituciones católicas que se construye entonces. La propuesta postula el protagonismo de actores laicos en la construcción de un espacio cristiano en los Andes peruanos en el siglo XVI y principios del XVII, donde la inversión económica permite contribuir a la transición de una sociedad de guerra y conquista a una sociedad corporativa pacificada.PALABRAS CLAVE: Hispanoamérica-Andes, religión, economía, encomienda, siglos XVI y XVII.ABSTRACTThis article aims to reflect on the mechanisms of financing and control of religious institutions by the laity in the first decades of the conquest and colonization of Spanish America. Investigating lay investment in the sacred sphere means first of all to clarifying historiography on laity, religion and money within Ancien Régime societies and their transposition to America, taking into account the multiple motivations of secular actors. The example of restitutions, donations and legacies inthe Andes enables us to explore the role of the Spanish laity and indigenous populations in the establishment of the dense network of Catholic institutions that was established during this period. The proposal postulates the role of lay actors in the construction of a Christian space in the Peruvian Andes in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, when economic investment contributed to the transition from a society of war and conquest to a pacified, corporate society.KEY WORDS: Hispanic America-Andes, religion, economics, encomienda, 16th and 17th centuries. RÉSUMÉLe principal objectif de cet article est d’encourager une approche plus large, supraconfessionnelle, du mariage et de la famille à l’époque moderne. La conjugalité a été “désacralisée” par les réformateurs protestants du 16e siècle. Martin Luther, parmi d’autres, a refusé le statut de sacrement au mariage, tout en valorisant celui-ci comme une arme contre le péché. En réaction, le concile de Trente a réaffirmé avec force que le mariage est bien un des sept sacrements chrétiens. Mais, promouvant la supériorité du célibat, l’Église catholique n’a jamais beaucoup insisté sur les vertus de la vie et de la piété familiales avant le 19e siècle. En parallèle, les historiens décèlent des signes de “sacralisation” de la famille protestante à partir du 16e siècle. Leurs conclusions doivent être relativisées à la lumière de recherches plus récentes et plus critiques, centrées sur les rapports et les représentations de genre. Elles peuvent néanmoins inspirer une étude élargie et comparative, inexistante dans l’historiographie traditionnelle, des réalités et des perceptions de la famille chrétienne au-delà des frontières confessionnelles.MOTS-CLÉ: Époque Moderne, mariage, famille, protestantisme, Concile de TrenteABSTRACTThe main purpose of this paper is to encourage a broader supra-confessional approach to the history of marriage and the family in the Early Modern era. Wedlock was “desacralized” by the Protestant reformers of the 16th century. Martin Luther, among others, denied the sacramental status of marriage but valued it as a weapon against sin. In reaction, the Council of Trent reinforced marriage as one of the seven sacraments. But the Catholic Church, which promoted the superiority of celibacy, did little to defend the virtues of family life and piety before the 19th century. In parallel, historians have identified signs of a “sacralization” of the Protestant family since the 16th century. These findings must be relativized in the light of newer and more critical studies on gender relations and representations. Drawing from historical literary works and contemporary French literature, this study [1] explored the evolution of the meanings of ‘gourmandise’ as a concept, from its early characterisation as a cardinal sin to a contemporary notion merging with visual textualisation. Furthermore, it argues that the twentieth century paved the way for a transformation in the meaning of gourmandise: its definition now emphasises a visual refinement characteristic, while retaining the element of excess as part of its appeal, thus making ‘gourmandise’ symbolic, accessible and acceptable to the general public. Although the word ‘gourmandise’ appeared in written documents at the end of the Middle Ages, its history is much older since its use dates back to the early days of Christianity, to the first monastic communities of the third and fourth centuries. In addition, while the term still exists today, its significance has had many variations over the centuries. While contemporary lexicographers define it as “the aptitude to appreciate the quality and delicacy of dishes” and the “excessive taste for the pleasure of the table” [2], its meaning has varied over the centuries [3] and is still contested. Philosophical, spiritual and social debates exist over whether the word depicts excess or moderation. In Western society, gourmandise refers to three denotations roughly corresponding to three historical periods. The earliest meaning refers to the big eaters, the heavy drinkers, and all the excesses of the table. Strongly negative, the word ‘gourmandise’ qualifies a horrible vice, one of the seven deadly sins codified by the Christian Church. Gradually, gourmandise was enriched by a second, positive sense, which would triumph in France in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and introduce the word ‘gourmet’ into European languages. While still reprobated by the Christian Church and moralists, gourmandise became a respectable epithet characterising amateur appreciators of good food, good wines and good company. The eighteenth century brought about a redefinition of the notion of gourmandise, all the more so as the influence of the Christian Church declined considerably. The works of Grimod de la Reynière and, a few years later, Brillat-Savarin saw a semantic change in the meaning of gourmandise, which has been attributed to the transition of an economy of scarcity to one of abundance [4, 5]. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries brought a new era for gourmandise. With the advent of digital communication, people began to talk about their experiences more rapidly and to a wider audience. Eating out has become a social event, one which must be shared instantly. Gourmandise has become digital and focuses both on quality and quantity, retaining some of its original meaning but with a new visual dimension [5]. Gourmandise is now part of everyday and professional life. It still includes the implications of excess, sharing and exchange, but now denotes transference in an increasingly seductive and interactive way. This rediscovered gourmandise is now voyeuristic instead of the gourmandise of the stomach. The findings of this study suggest that, while the meaning of gourmandise has evolved over a period of two millennia, the aspect of excessive food consumption has been retained from its beginnings right through to the twenty-first century. Paralleling its growing prestige within popular culture and social media, the discourse on gourmandise is thriving. Amidst the ‘explosion’ of food-related blogs, vlogs, websites and television programmes, gourmandise has become an engaging form of entertainment, trying to satisfy the appetites of a contemporary ‘food-crazed’ culture. Este artigo trata de jornalismo e despolitização da política, considerando a literatura nacional e internacional. Ele tem como referência as críticas a um modelo normativo típico que descreve/prescreve a relação da organização e da atividade econômica da imprensa com a política e a democracia, a partir de uma analogia com a concepção liberal da economia e da política: as pressões de mercado não levam à diversidade de conteúdos e à politização, ao contrário, elas tendem a reforçar a despolitização da política. A literatura sobre mídia e política no Brasil é analítica, qualificada e volumosa, mas não trata das relações entre os processos de midiatização e de despolitização da política. Já a literatura internacional dispõe textos que revelam várias práticas e processos do espaço do jornalismo que caracterizam a despolitização da política.PALAVRAS-CHAVES: Midiatização. Photo by Scott Graham on Unsplash INTRODUCTION It is a classic ethical dilemma to have something of potential value that comes at a tremendous cost to others.[1] To access the good, you must have the bad. For decision-makers, it becomes an onerous task of deciding if they would deny the world something 'good' or create something bad to achieve the good. Weighing the two possible outcomes has proven timelessly frustrating to those well-intentioned people who wish to "do the right thing." Medical research has yielded data derived from unethical situations wherein research participants were vulnerable and whose consent was questionable, absent, or not sought. The rules currently governing research allow for broad use of ill-gotten data. While providing a deterrent to unethical research practices, stricter rules still would allow some use of data. This paper argues the permissibility depends primarily on the nature of the unethical data collection and the potential benefits. ANALYSIS The American Medical Association (AMA) places additional obligations on researchers who utilize data obtained from unethical experiments. The Code of Medical Ethics Opinion 7.2.2[2] recommends that researchers and peer reviewers should take the following steps to best handle such data: (a) Disclose that the data derived from studies do not meet contemporary standards for the ethical conduct of research. (b) Clearly describe and acknowledge the unethical nature of the experiment(s) from which the data are derived. (c) Provide ethically compelling reasons for which the data are being released or cited, such as the need to save human lives when no other relevant data are available. (d) Pay respect to those who were the victims of the unethical experimentation. The AMA does not go far enough to protect past research victims or prevent future research ethics violations. Three additional considerations beyond the limitations offered by the APA are needed for ethical use of the data: who collected the data and ran the experiments, who would benefit from the data, and how much additional benefit would ensue from its use. A specific focus on data generated by Nazis whose research subjects were imprisoned in concentration camps highlights the ethical challenge. l. Who Created the Data? Medical research generated during the Holocaust subjected innocent people to torture in the name of science. Arguments can be made against the use of such data on the grounds that using the data represents a further indignity to those who suffered such horrific conditions and persecution. However, some of the data that emerged out of the Holocaust was not created by oppressors at the expense of the oppressed. Rather it grew out of the horrific conditions and was amassed by fellow prisoners. One prominent example is Myron Winick's work on hunger and disease, which edited the detailed records of Jewish physicians working in the Warsaw Ghetto, who traced the progression of starvation in stunning detail.[3] One obvious difference is that the Jewish physicians were not responsible for the conditions under which the data was gathered. But if we ask ourselves if their work represents a further indignity to those who had their starvation documented, the answer is not so clear. In this way, it is important to determine the explicit purpose of medical research as opposed to data generation as one aspect of the violation. To record the medical symptoms of a 'subject' who is, as you are, a victim of the circumstances with no other recourse, is different in kind from 'subjecting' a person to the condition in the first instance. Therefore, an analysis of the person doing the research provides an added limitation on using research performed by an oppressor yet allows some lenience for research by fellow victims. Research performed by oppressors must have a significantly higher marginal benefit over other available or collectable data. ll. Who Gains from the Data? Is it of Sufficient Benefit? (An effort to expand part C of the AMA unethical experimentation rules) In the spirit of contrition and commitment to the truth of historical ignominies, such as the Holocaust, the AMA created these best practices for physicians dealing with any ill-gotten data. In the case of the Holocaust, the period that has passed since 1945 would suggest that most, if not all, perpetrators of this research are deceased. However, prior to using data, modern researchers should ensure that there is no gain to be had on the part of the families of the perpetrators. When a large organization can offer mea culpa and seemingly genuine pledges toward reconciliation while still enjoying the advantages gained over others by virtue of their wrongdoing, it undermines sincerity, creates an incentive for more researchers to engage in unethical data collection, and would be an injustice to the relatives of victims. This matter may become more relevant going forward as private ownership and patents could play a role in sustaining the fiscal or reputational benefits to those who conduct science devoid of ethics. The Belmont Report lays out a risk-benefit equation which states that research that posed significant risks to the participants must also carry sufficient benefits to those who take risks. This element suggests two aspects that speak to the "justness" of a research project: First, a balance must be struck between potential harms and potential benefits; second, those who took risks must not be precluded from accessing the benefits of the products a successful trial would create.[4] Researchers must evaluate whether the data is both scientifically valid and usable from a methodological point of view, but also if what the use of the data promises is sufficiently compelling to benefit the progress of science. Second, the data must refer to some aspect of human health or illness, the amelioration of which would create an empirical improvement to all social and economic classes of humanity. The social justice issues embedded in the ethical use of the data are overlooked by the AMA. While the AMA suggests saving human lives makes the use of ill-gotten data acceptable, it fails to address any effort to make up for the wrongdoing. Examples of added considerations could be the use of the research to benefit people who were research subjects or their descendants or a broader race or ethnic group that was victimized. Examples of groups subjected to unethical research in the 20th century include Residential Schools for Aboriginal Canadians,[5] senior citizens,[6] and typically, members of socially deprived and undervalued populations.[7] The more reliable scientific data that emerged from Nazi experimentation is in the areas of hypothermia,[8] malnutrition and starvation,[9] and anatomical studies.[10] It is impossible to justify the use by the AMA criteria alone. If the research benefited relatives and descendants of Nazi prisoners or the broader marginalized community of which they belonged, its use might be considered ethical if there were no other way to obtain comparable data. The value and impact of Nazi science is minimal at this point, with much more reliable data available, but this type of transgression continues. There are modern examples of data procured in breach of ethics that still lend themselves to this question. CONCLUSION These suggestions would add complexity and substance to the AMA's Code of Medical Ethics Opinion. Beyond that scope, the considerations offered here would contribute to a stronger statement about the obligations and prohibitions in circumstances in which data was wrongfully collected. Too often, one could default to a brash 'means-to-an-ends' approach, especially when issues of funding and measured productivity come into the equation. The considerations here recognize that data gathered during the Holocaust is particularly sensitive. By eliminating any encouragement of unethical practices, a stricter test for the use of ill-gotten research is a deterrent but recognizes that sometimes the benefits call for the use of the research. The considerations also recognize that one legacy of such data is to create good in the modern-day, even as we recognize the shameful context of its creation and existence. En nous appuyant sur l'historiographie française, nous évoquons, dans la première partie, la problématique des lieux de mémoire. A travers l'exemple de la Eldridge Street Synagogue de New York, nous évaluons les critères selon lesquels la communauté juive américaine est en mesure d'élaborer ses propres lieux de mémoire. La deuxième partie est consacrée à une réflexion sur le rôle joué par la photographie dans la constitution d'une mémoire collective. Le rapport intime de la photographie avec le passé institue ce médium comme le porteur de symboles, le sujet d'équivoques et le passeur d'un oubli à la fois inéluctable, nécessaire et impossible. A travers l'observation de plusieurs photographies emblématiques de l'immigration juive aux Etats-Unis, nous mettons au jour quelques contresens et stéréotypes véhiculés par la photographie, mais néanmoins emblématiques de moments fondateurs de cette communauté. Dans la troisième partie, nous questionnons l'influence de la mémoire de la Shoah sur l'historiographie en général et sur la mémoire juive en particulier. Nous demandons enfin, si le rôle de l'historien ne consiste pas à remédier au mutisme de la mémoire, aux lacunes de l'écriture de l'histoire. Dans ce processus, sa responsabilité morale est engagée. Nous l'estimons à la lueur des présupposés d'objectivité dont l'historien fait son dogme
Inspired by the french historiography, we are approaching, in the first part, the problematic of the "sites of memory". Through the example of the Eldridge Street Synagogue of New York City, we estimate how Jewish American community create its own sites of memory. The second part is a reflection on the role of photography in the building of collective memory. The intimate relationship between photography and the past transforms photography in a true symbol and medium of a necessary, impossible and unavoidable oblivion of the past. Through the observation of a few photographies showing the jewish immigration in America, we demonstrate that stereotypes and misinterpretations are nevertheless emblematics of the foundation of the community. In the last part, we question the influence of the memory of the Holocaust on historiography. We interrogate the role played by the historian in the resolution of the silences related to the writing of history. His moral responsibility is therefore committed. We estimate the ethics of the historian, whose knowledge is supposed to serve objectivity

Cette thèse propose une étude de la population juive de New York d'un point de vue historique, social et religieux du XVIIe siècle à nos jours. L'idée forte de ce travail est qu'à New York il n'existe pas une communauté juive au sens traditionnel du terme mais plutôt une société juive comprenant des groupes bien distincts comme les hassidim, les immigrants israéliens et le groupe majoritaire que nous avons appelé les Américains juifs

Ma recherche doctorale concerne l'étude de la vie et de la culture juive à Lugo (Italie) grâce à un examen attentif du Registre des morts (Pinqas ha-nifṭarim), une source de grande importance compilée en hébreu entre 1658 et 1825 et actuellement conservée dans la bibliothèque du Jewish Theological Seminary of America, à New York. Les actes de décès couvrent près de deux siècles et contiennent des informations inestimables sur l'histoire et sur les rabbins de la communauté. En plus du style baroque de plusieurs poèmes composés en l'honneur des dirigeants, de grand intérêt sont la description exacte de la culture funéraire des Juifs et la reconstruction généalogique de nombreuses familles juives importantes, telles que Fano, Sinigaglia, Del Vecchio, Jacchia et d'autres. Cette information a été comparée à celles présentes dans les registres communautaires contemporains. En effet, les listes des membres qui ont participé aux réunions du conseil nous permettent d'avoir beaucoup d'information de grand intérêt sur les membres éminents de la communauté et de reconstruire non seulement le contexte démographique de la communauté juive mais aussi l'évolution et les voies de son développement. Le manuscrit contient également les statuts de Ḥevrat Gemilut Ḥasadim (Bonnes Œuvres ou Société de la Miséricorde) de la communauté juive de Lugo. Cette association s'occupait de l'enterrement de chaque membre de la communauté et ses activités consistaient spécifiquement à s'occuper des membres de la famille des mourants préparant le corps avant l'enterrement; organiser la procession et la cérémonie funéraire; entretien du cimetière; aider les personnes en deuil; dire des prières rituelles; distribuer des provisions et des médicaments pour les malades. Il a été institué le 16 Hešwan 5418, le 23 octobre 1657. Le texte des statuts montre un aperçu très intéressant de la vie religieuse et sociale des Juifs de Lugo
My doctoral research concerns the study of Jewish life and culture in Lugo (Italy) thanks to a careful examination of the Register of deaths (Pinqas ha-nifṭarim) Qahal Qadosh Lugo, a source of great importance compiled in Hebrew between 1658 and 1825 and currently stored in the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York. The death recordings encompass almost two centuries and contain invaluable information about the history and Rabbis of the community. Of particular interest was the Barocco style of several poems composed in honour of leading people, the accurate description of the funerary culture of the Jews and for the genealogical reconstruction of many important Jewish families, such as Fano, Sinigaglia, Del Vecchio, Jacchia and others. This information has been compared with those present in the contemporary Community registers. The lists of members who participated in the board meetings, in fact, allow us to have a lot of information of great interest about the eminent members of the community and to reconstruct not only the demographic context of the Jewish community but also the evolution and ways of its development. The manuscript also contains the statutes of Ḥevrat Gemilut Ḥasadim (Good Works or Mercy Society) of Jewish community of Lugo. This association handled the burial of each member of the community and its activities specifically consisted in looking after the family members of the dying preparing the body before the burial; organizing the funeral procession and ceremony; cemetery maintenance; assisting mourners; saying ritual prayers; distributing provisions and medicine for sick people. It was instituted on 16 Hešwan 5418, i.e. 23rd October 1657. The text of the statutes shows a very interesting insight of religious and social welfare life of the Jews of Lugo
