Villate, Laurent. "Paul et Jules Cambon : deux acteurs de la diplomatie française, 1843-1935." Paris, Institut d'études politiques, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999IEPP0012.
Full textThis thesis consists in a biography of Paul Cambon (1843-1924) and Jules Cambon (1845-1935) who were prefects and ambassadors under the Third Republic. Their careers had to be studied at once, as they were astonishingly parallels. Born in Paris in the reign of Louis Philippe, graduated in law, the Cambon brothers started their rising career after the ending of Second Empire, after Jules Ferry's example and with the support of several influential friends. They were prefects in different departments, sometimes in the same the one after the other, like it happened in the North. The second part of their career has been accomplished in the colonies. Paul Cambon has been in Tunisia from 1882 to 1886 where he organised the French protectorate ; Jules Cambon has been governor of Algeria from 1891 to 1897 in charge of major state reforms. They both faced difficulties (Paul Cambon against General Boulanger in Tunis ; Jules Cambon against the delegates in Algeria), but they still succeeded to enter the diplomatic service. Paul Cambon was sent in Madrid (1886-1891), in Constantinople (1891-1898) and in London (1898-1920). Jules Cambon worked on Washington (1897-1902), in Madrid (1902-1907) and Berlin (1907-1914). During the World War I, they both still exerted their influence (Jules Cambon was Secretary General of French Foreign Office from 1915 to 1917 and a member of the French Delegation at the Peace Conference of Paris). The two brothers were, as well as Camille Barrère, the best support of Delcassé’s policy, which lead to the Entente cordiale. Based on the private letters mostly unpublished before their work, their memoir intends to light up several issues : strategy of career, daily lives, in the prefectures and the embassies, state official's on political life, on other countries and other peoples and on the geopolitical groups. . . Apart being very well written, these letters are mainly an amazing testimony on a specific era and enlighten from the heart the administrative and diplomatic process
Fayaud, Viviane. "Brosser le mythe et l'histoire d'après les oeuvres de Jules-Louis Lejeune, Max Radiguet, Charles Giraud, Pierre Loti : Tahiti et la Polynésie orientale avant Paul Gauguin (1800-1890)." Polynésie française, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005POLF0008.
Full textPaul Gauguin and the island of Tahiti have had such and established association that all previous artistic talents have been hidden. However, Paul Gauguin was only the last in a long line of French artists to paint the island and its neighbourly archipelagos. Four of them are studied : Jules-Louis Lejeune, Max Radiguet, Charles Giraud and Pierre Loti. The historical research bases on drawings realized by expeditions to Polynesia revolves arount three themes : the history of the myth of Tahiti and its artists, the history of the representations of Tahiti, and art as a source of the history of Tahiti. Since the mythe of Tahiti, which links the island to love and to an earthly paradise, belongs within the realm of French general knowledge, its foundations and evolution need to be understood. This is to determine ist impact on artists and their works. These works of art, convey, transpose and distort, or in a word depict a reality cast within a mould of trends of thought, philosophical concepts and scientific approaches. This iconographic group consistently interweaves individual and collective features of long and short duration. Thus, the second part of the thesis sets out to analyze and sort out some of these aspects. The last part describes the publishing development of drawings and their contribution to the history of Tahiti through three themes : the so-called "guerre franco-tahitienne", the Tahitian woman, the key feature of the myth which calls upon social history, and queen Pomare IV, in whom myth and history merge
Palewska, Marie. "Un romancier d'aventures à la Belle Epoque : paul d'Ivoi (1856-1915) et ses "Voyages excentriques"." Thesis, Paris 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA030013.
Full textPublished in volumes between 1894 and 1917 by the former bookshop Furne, Paul d’Ivoi’s "Voyages Excentriques" made up a collection which was very much valued by the youth of the Edwardian Era.These adventure novels, in the tradition of Jules Verne, were highly representative of their time with plots deeply rooted in the political ideas pervading then. They were anxious to contribute to the patriotic and moral moulding of their readers and applied to support the colonial work of France while promoting the values of the French Republic and celebrating its influence all over the world. The action, which often deals with international diplomatic stakes, sends the characters abroad to meet other nationalities whose visions reflect their relationships with France, whether friendly or of conflict. However the "Voyages Excentriques" swing from reality into fiction using the various means that adventure novels, then at their peak, offered them. Exotism and scientific extravagance are the main themes, often accompanied with detective stories or spy fiction as secondary sorts. When writing his adventure novels, Paul d’Ivoi carefully paid attention to differentiating himself from his predecessors, asserting his own manner by inventing wonderful scientific gadgets or giving a preponderant role to women. His books were a great success at the turn of the 20th century as New Year’s gifts, school prizes, popular manuals or cheap serials which were adapted on stage or even in movies. He is most original in his dealing with eccentricity which is to be found all through his collection of Belle Epoque novels

Full textThe research aims at analyzing the colonial idea in France during the Third Republic, the different ways it was conveyed and the main themes adopted to justify the colonial expansion. After a first historical overview, the second chapter focuses on the different actors that contributed in promoting the colonies and the colonial propaganda (above all the “parti colonial”), in a context in which the majority of the French citizens seemed not really interested in supporting the colonial empire nor in understanding its needs and methods. Subsequently, the research analyzes the different themes the supporters of the French colonial movement adopted to justify the need of a colonial empire at the economic, political and “humanitarian” levels. The last chapter is focused on the diffusion of the “colonial sciences” and the creation of ad hoc colonial sections or schools aimed at training the future colonial administrators. The analysis highlights the links between the different actors of the political, economic and scientific circles. Also, thanks to the exam of the student’s notes it is possible to see how the colonial idea was conveyed in this field.
