Abstract:
Julie/Julia stands out in several ways. What had begun, in 2002/2003, as a highly popular blog, in which New Yorker Julie Powell tracks her experience of cooking all the recipes in Julia Child’s classic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cookery, became one of the first notable, commercially successful "blooks"—a neologism that denotes blogs adapted into books. As a visible sign of this achievement, The Ju-lie/Julia Project was awarded with the inaugural “Blooker Prize” in 2006. A few years later, Julie/Julia again pioneered in being the first blog (or blook, for that matter) to be adapted into a Hollywood movie, Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. In the following, I want to discuss Julie/Julia, and its adaptations from blog to book to film, as an instructive case study of life writing in the digital age.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose with this essay is to illustrate the problematical mother-daughterrelation in Mar-gareta Garpes drama/play “To Julia” through a psychoanalytic and philosophical perspective. To get a deeper understanding for the relations between mother and daughter, and the kind of motherhood that Gloria is practising in the play I have used a hermeneutic method in search for answers to the questions: Why does Gloria take a position as a so called friend or sister in the interaction with her daughter Julia? Why is not mother Gloria capable to be mature, caring and nursing in the interaction with Julia?

Through Gloria Margareta Garpe is giving me possible answers: Gloria is still seeing herself as a rejected and lonely child. The role of the daughter Julia in her mother’s life is to fill an empty space that was created in Gloria’s adolescence when she experienced the same feelings as Julia in present time in the play. The same confused mix of Julia’s and her mother’s feel-ings and needs, Gloria felt in her own childhood.

How a woman turns out as a mother depends on a variety of factors. Mature, caring mother-hood is an act of awareness, responsibility, moral, reflection and adaptation. This can lead to the kind of freedom that de Beauvoir refers to as the ambiguous “reality” meaning the “exis-tence”. The mother who sees her child as a friend or sibling has not emancipated herself from a symbiosis with her own mother. Margareta Garpe illustrates in practise in the play “To Julia” both de Beauvoir´s and Stern’s theories. According to my own interpretation Julia has not yet emancipated herself from her mother Gloria in the end of the play. But her understand-ing for Gloria’s motherhood has increased through their confrontations in the play.

Abstract:
This working paper explores the relationship between Lebanon's independent media ecosystem and the European Endowment for Democracy (EED). Focusing on Megaphone News as a case study, it examines whether the platform aligns with Julia Cagé's Non-Profit Media Organisation model, and gathers insights from seven Arab media practitioners on participative journalism. Using thematic clusters, it critiques the EED's role and argues that European support is shaped by interests beyond democracy assistance. Despite a collapsing economy and political instability, Lebanon's independent media have shown adaptability and community-driven resilience. Their innovations highlight the need to refine both theory and European policy to better support sustainable, independent journalism.

Hummels, David. Toward a Geography of Trade Costs. GTAP Working Paper, January 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.wp17.

Full text
Abstract:
What are the barriers that separate nations? While recent work provides intriguing clues, we have remarkably little concrete evidence as to the nature, size, and shape of barriers. This paper offers direct and indirect evidence on trade barriers, moving us toward a comprehensive geography of trade costs. There are three main contributions. One, we provide detailed data on freight rates for a number of importers. Rates vary substantially over exporters, and aggregate expenditures on freight are at the low end of the observed range. This suggests import choices are made so as to minimize transportation costs. Two, we estimate the technological relationship between freight rates and distance and use this to interpret the trade barriers equivalents of common trade barrier proxies taken from the literature. The calculation reveals implausibly large barriers. Three, we use a multi-sector model of trade to isolate channels through which trade barriers affect trade volumes. The model motivates an estimation technique that delivers direct estimates of substitution elasticities. This allows a complete characterization of the trade costs implied by trade flows and a partition of those costs into three components: explicitly measured costs (tariffs and freight), costs associated with common proxy variables, and costs that are implied but unmeasured. Acknowledgments: Thanks for the gracious provision of data go to Jon Haveman, Rob Feenstra, Azita Amjadi and the ALADI secretariat. Abstract:
