Abstract:
For hundreds of years, language educators have alternated between favoring language teaching approaches which focus on language form and those which emphasize language use or which focus on the message (Celce-Murcia 1979). For the greater part of this past decade, it has been the latter which have been fashionable. As a consequence, language teachers have been discouraged from teaching grammar. In fact, during the 1980s explicit grammer instruction has even been proscribed by certain methodologists (Krashen 1982; 1985, Krashen and Terrell 1983, Prabhu 1987). Although this position has been repeatedly assailed (Higgs and Clifford 1982, Long 1983; 1988, Harley and Swain 1984, Pienemann 1984), the proscribers persist. Only as recently as June 1988, Van Patten concluded that “…research evidence to date does not suggest that a focus on form is either necessary or beneficial to early stage learners’ (1988:243). Undeniable is the fact that research has pointed to a difference in learner performance (e.g., type of errors made) depending on whether there is a focus on form or not (Pica 1983, Spada 1987); still to be resolved, and surely an issue which will motivate much research in the next decade, is the extent to which a focus on form versus on a focus on message affects the rate of target language attainment. Such research will hopefully be conducted in a way which disambiguates “focus on form” (Larsen-Freeman and Long 1988, Beretta 1989).

Full text
Abstract:
A red clover intercrop was evaluated in terms of its ability to provide soil erosion protection and its effects on silage corn yields on a Conestoga loam soil at the Elora Research Station, Elora, Ontario. The soil and runoff losses from experimental plots of silage corn (corn system) and silage corn intercropped with red clover (corn/clover system) were compared using the Guelph Rainfall Simulator II. Measurements were made in November 1987 and October 1988, and in April, May, June of 1988 and 1989. Rainfall was applied for 10 min (15 min in June of 1988) on a 1-m2 quadrat at an intensity of 16 cm h−1. Soil loss was significantly (P < 0.05) lower from the corn/clover cropping system than the corn system for all months except June 1989. Runoff reduction with the corn/clover system ranged from 45 to 87%, with largest reductions occurring in June. Reduction of soil loss from the corn/clover system as compared to the corn system ranged from 46 to 78%. Silage corn yield data from 1984 to 1989 illustrated that, where no additional N was added, yields from the corn/clover system consistently exceeded yields from the corn system. Where N was added, continuous corn yields were only slightly greater than those from the corn/clover system. It is concluded that intercropping silage corn with red clover can provide soil erosion protection without significant effect on silage corn yields. Abstract:
AbstractWe monitored eclosion patterns of adult Coquillettidia perturbons (Walker) in the Minneapolis – St. Paul region of Minnesota directly using emergence traps (1983, 1984, and 1992), and indirectly using CO2-baited adult traps (1987–1992) and larval sampling (1988 and 1989). Most mosquitoes eclosed in a unimodal pulse during June although peak eclosion periods varied among years and sites. It required 26.6 ± 1.5 days for 90% of individual populations to eclose. Temporal abundances of host-seeking females also suggested unimodal eclosion with peaks typically occurring in June and July. Most larvae overwintered in the fourth instar and pupated in early summer, as expected from adult data. However, many larvae overwintered in the third instar and did not molt into the fourth until July, which was after most eclosion was completed. These individuals may eclose in autumn or may spend a second winter as larvae.

Abstract:
Summary A total of over 210 hr of previously unpublished differential photoelectric photometry of 21 Com (HD 108945, HR4766), obtained in five years, were analysed to search for periodicities. Of these, the 88 hr obtained in 1983, 1985, 1986 and 1989 were searched for, and show no indications of short-period variability. In 1988, over 116 hr of differential photoelectric photometry of 21 Com were obtained from six observing sites in North America, Europe and Asia in Stromgren b in order to look for rotational, as well as pulsational, periodicities. Most of the data were obtained during a three-week period of time in 1988 March—April, and nearly 6 hr of additional data were obtained in 1989 June. No statistically significant short-period variability was detected in the period range of 4.8 min to 2 hr in any of these data. The lack of detection of short-period variability contradicts the findings of numerous other authors, most recently those of Santagati et al. We have found a double-peaked lightcurve with a period of 2.00435 ± 0.00080 d and a peak-to-peak amplitude of about 0.03 mag in b that we attribute to rotational variability. The time-base between our 1988 and 1989 data allows us to establish this accuracy for the period. We present arguments which rule out a single-wave lightcurve of half this period (namely 1.002 d).

Abstract:
We surveyed the Lesser Snow (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Chen rossii) of Jenny Lind Island, Nunavut, using aerial photography in June 1988, 1998, and 2006, and a visual helicopter transect survey in July 1990. The estimated number of nesting geese was 39 154 ± SE 2238 in 1988, 19 253 ± 2323 in 1998, and 21 572 ± 1898 in 2006. In 1988 an estimated 2.7% of the nesting geese were Ross’s. The July 1990 population of adult-plumaged birds was 25 020 ± 3114. The estimated percentage blue morph among Snow and Ross’s geese was 19.0% in 1988, 25.1% in 1989, 23.0% in 1990 and 21.1% in 2006. Estimated pre-fledged Snow Goose productivity was 47% young in 1989 and 46% in 1990. Combined numbers of Snow and Ross’s geese on Jenny Lind Island grew over 250 fold, from 210 adults in 1962-1966 to 54 100 adults in 1985. Numbers subsequently declined, to 42 200 in 1988, 25 000 in 1990, 20 300 in 1998, and 26 400 in 2006. Population decline between 1985 and 1990 was consistent with anecdotal reports by others that die-offs of Snow Geese occurred in 1984, 1985 and 1989, and with our August 1989 fieldwork which found evidence of habitat degradation and malnourishment of young geese. In spite of limited food resources on Jenny Lind Island, the colony continued to exist in 2006 at near its 1990 and 1998 levels. Further studies there could provide insights for management of the overabundant mid-continent Snow Goose population and its arctic habitats.

Abstract:
During a study based on catches taken in the northern North Sea by selected Scottish fishing boats during 1985–1992, large numbers of the normally rare short-fin squid, Todaropsis eblanae (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae), were recorded in 1987 and 1990. Our findings, supported by data obtained from plankton/young fish surveys in 1988 and 1989, suggest that in northern waters Todaropsis eblanae generally mates and spawns during late summer and early autumn (June-November). Successful hatching events appear to occur during October-March, producing juvenile (stage I) squid in the early part of the year (January-June). Estimations of maximum male reproductive output and female fecundity were up to 130 spermatophores and ~28,000 eggs per individual, respectively.

Mok, Ka Ho. "The quest for democracy : intellectuals and the state in contemporary China." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1994. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1378/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study first establishes a framework for examining sociologically how ideas are formed with particular reference to the examination of Chinese intellectuals' conceptualization of democracy. The basis for this framework is K. Mannheim's sociology of knowledge, together with A. Gramsci's sociology of intellectuals and P. Bourdieu's notion of intellectual field. Deriving the insights from these scholars we hope to establish a more coherent conceptual framework for the analysis of intellectual production. With this framework in hand, the next step was to determine a reasonable approach to the examination of the ideological formation of Chinese intellectuals. The source of information for the study came from the first-hand intensive interviews with the selected intellectuals. Besides, the present study also scrutinizes the works of these intellectuals whose works have spanned the years especially from the May Fourth Movement (1919) to the June Fourth Incident (1989). Their perceptions of democracy, freedom and human rights provide vital clues for determining the complete picture of the evolution on the idea of democracy in contemporary China. No one intellectual has managed to suggest what democracy is, but using the theoretical framework and examining the interviews, writings and speeches of these intellectuals over a period of several years have allowed this researcher to develop a systematic and a more integrated view of democracy as formulated by Chinese intellectuals. In the process of analyzing the ideological production of Chinese intellectuals, this writer has also discovered the emergence of new and different relationships which have developed between Chinese intellectuals and the state. At the same time as they have become more independent, the nature of their critique has changed. In the past Chinese intellectuals criticized only the corruption of government and never the system of government itself. But post-Mao intellectuals have thrown off the fetters of their predecessors and turned their attacks on the system of their repressive Communist regime. Those who, in an earlier era, were fiercely loyal to the Communist ideals now speak only of the myth of a Communist utopia. Their criticism of the crises in China and their critique of state socialism reveal not only their scepticism of socialist praxis but also their wishes to make China more democratic. One point which deserves special attention is that the present research finds that the sixth generation of intellectuals has become more conscious about their independent role, rethinking a new relationship with the state and they have distinguished themselves from the establishment. The most significant finding of the present research is the fact that the ideological formation is greatly affected by the social location, the educational orientation and generational location of intellectuals. More importantly, a deeper understanding of how Chinese intellectuals conceive the ideas of democracy is significantly determined by the particular socio-historical and socio-cultural contexts in which the ideas are formed. The present study also observes that intellectual radicalism is greatly constrained by the socioeconomic and political opportunities that intellectuals have access. With different social locations and socio-economic-political opportunities to which intellectuals access, they may adopt different strategies in coping with the state. After the June Fourth massacre, many Chinese intellectuals with critical thinking were forced to exile overseas. The writer also finds that these exiled intellectuals have deeper reflection of democracy and also their relationship with the state especially when their socio-political circumstances have changed. Adding these observations together, it is highly indicative to us that Chinese intellectuals have struggled for a more autonomous social position and endeavored to have a new relationship with the state.

Full text
Abstract:
On July 3, 1964 TransCanada PipeLines Limited commissioned the first Rolls-Royce Industrial Avon, in a Cooper Bessemer pipeline compressor set. In 1986, Cooper-Rolls introduced upgraded versions of the Avon (1535E) and power turbine (RT48S). In 1987, TransCanada converted an Avon to 1535E standard at one location and power turbines to RT48S at two other locations. Following one year of acceptable operation, four units were converted to the “Production” standard with both Avon and power turbine upgraded in 1988. Testing showed the old, modified units to achieve the performance guaranteed for new engines. The condition of the lead Avon 1535E at tear-down after 6000 hours is described, together with a statement on condition after 15000 hours. The four units modified in 1988 were torn down for inspection during the Summer of 1989, and their condition is discussed. Minor operating difficulties are described together with their solutions. This paper publishes work that was presented without publication at the Toronto conference in June 1989 together with new information which has become available since that time.

Abstract:
The methodology discussed in this paper provides a risk informed basis for decreasing the frequency of inspection for the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) reactor pressure vessel (RPV). The decrease in frequency is based on extending the interval between inspections from the current interval of 10 years to 20 years. Results of pilot studies on typical designs of PWR vessels show that the change in risk associated with extending the inspection interval by more than 10 years is within the guidelines specified in U.S. Regulatory Guide 1.174 for insignificant change in risk. The current requirements for inspection of reactor vessel pressure-containing welds have been in effect since the 1989 Edition of American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section XI, supplemented by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Regulatory Guide 1.150, June 1981. The manner in which these examinations are conducted has recently been augmented by Appendix VIII of Section XI, 1996 Addenda, as implemented by the NRC in amendment to 10CFR50.55a effective November 22, 1999. This paper summarizes the insignificant change in risk results for the PWR pilot-plant studies, including the effects of fatigue crack growth and in-service inspection of postulated surface-breaking flaws. These results demonstrate that the proposed RPV inspection interval extension is a viable option for the industry.

Abstract:
Abstract Heat transfer in a building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system has been investigated experimentally and numerically. A mathematical model is proposed for the numerical prediction, where an alternative of temperature, the cumulative variable, is defined as a temperature integration along the wall height of the BIPV system. The system which was consisted of eighteen west facing BP PV panels and a heavy concrete wall was experimentally studied to measure the electricity generation rate and thermal regulation effects. The eighteen PV panels were arranged in three modes and installed on the building wall with an thermal regulation gap, which enables natural convection for the ventilation of the PV panels. The experiments were controlled by a computer, so that data from sensors can be collected and recorded by a data logger automatically. However, the instantaneous outdoor wind speed was estimated by the Discrete Hillbert Transformer with sample input selected from the data observed by the Observatory in Hong Kong in June of 1989. The measured results of four days from the twelfth to sixteenth of June in 1999 had been compared with the numerical results. It is found that the maximum of the average temperature of PV panels has exceeded 50°C, but the maximum conversion efficiency of solar energy is less than 10%, close to 6.76%. A good agreement has been obtained between the measurements and predictions for the four days of investigation. It is concluded that the model for heat transfer analysis could be applied for the long term run of this BIPV system.

Abstract:
The “Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear” (Nuclear Safety Council), or CSN, is the nuclear regulatory body of Spain. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations and standards have been primarily used in the past up to the present. However, there is a process such that regulations recently generated in Spain replace or complement regulations coming from other countries. This is not the case with the evaluation and control of motor-operated valves (MOVs), which are mainly monitored using the process described in Generic Letters 89-10 and 96-05. During a nine-month assignment from April to December 1989 at NRC offices in King of Prussia, PA, the author gained knowledge of NRC Bulletin 85-03 and of Generic Letter 89-10, which was issued in June 1989. The author realized the importance of these communications for improving the safety of the plants in the future if the issues they describe are adequately managed and solved.
