Mok, Ka Ho. "The quest for democracy : intellectuals and the state in contemporary China." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1994. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1378/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study first establishes a framework for examining sociologically how ideas are formed with particular reference to the examination of Chinese intellectuals' conceptualization of democracy. The basis for this framework is K. Mannheim's sociology of knowledge, together with A. Gramsci's sociology of intellectuals and P. Bourdieu's notion of intellectual field. Deriving the insights from these scholars we hope to establish a more coherent conceptual framework for the analysis of intellectual production. With this framework in hand, the next step was to determine a reasonable approach to the examination of the ideological formation of Chinese intellectuals. The source of information for the study came from the first-hand intensive interviews with the selected intellectuals. Besides, the present study also scrutinizes the works of these intellectuals whose works have spanned the years especially from the May Fourth Movement (1919) to the June Fourth Incident (1989). Their perceptions of democracy, freedom and human rights provide vital clues for determining the complete picture of the evolution on the idea of democracy in contemporary China. No one intellectual has managed to suggest what democracy is, but using the theoretical framework and examining the interviews, writings and speeches of these intellectuals over a period of several years have allowed this researcher to develop a systematic and a more integrated view of democracy as formulated by Chinese intellectuals. In the process of analyzing the ideological production of Chinese intellectuals, this writer has also discovered the emergence of new and different relationships which have developed between Chinese intellectuals and the state. At the same time as they have become more independent, the nature of their critique has changed. In the past Chinese intellectuals criticized only the corruption of government and never the system of government itself. But post-Mao intellectuals have thrown off the fetters of their predecessors and turned their attacks on the system of their repressive Communist regime. Those who, in an earlier era, were fiercely loyal to the Communist ideals now speak only of the myth of a Communist utopia. Their criticism of the crises in China and their critique of state socialism reveal not only their scepticism of socialist praxis but also their wishes to make China more democratic. One point which deserves special attention is that the present research finds that the sixth generation of intellectuals has become more conscious about their independent role, rethinking a new relationship with the state and they have distinguished themselves from the establishment. The most significant finding of the present research is the fact that the ideological formation is greatly affected by the social location, the educational orientation and generational location of intellectuals. More importantly, a deeper understanding of how Chinese intellectuals conceive the ideas of democracy is significantly determined by the particular socio-historical and socio-cultural contexts in which the ideas are formed. The present study also observes that intellectual radicalism is greatly constrained by the socioeconomic and political opportunities that intellectuals have access. With different social locations and socio-economic-political opportunities to which intellectuals access, they may adopt different strategies in coping with the state. After the June Fourth massacre, many Chinese intellectuals with critical thinking were forced to exile overseas. The writer also finds that these exiled intellectuals have deeper reflection of democracy and also their relationship with the state especially when their socio-political circumstances have changed. Adding these observations together, it is highly indicative to us that Chinese intellectuals have struggled for a more autonomous social position and endeavored to have a new relationship with the state.

Increased precipitation from El Niño ensures more abundant vegetative growth, which in turn raises concern about increased fire hazards, especially during Arizona's summer fire season. Whatever fire hazards are due this year to El Niño are not being experienced evenly throughout the state, however, with some areas actually having less fires. And, in some cases, El Niño's legacy may not be apparent this season, but instead be evident by fires in future years.

Abstract:
A nation's foreign policy is often subject to change. This change may occur in its relations with other nationstates or with international organizations such as the European Economic Community (E.E.C.). Greece became a full E.E.C. member in January, 1980, when the conservative Nea Democratia was in power. The Nea Democratia, both in government from 1974 to 1981 and in opposition since 1981, has been consistent in its support for the E.E.C.; in contrast, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) has not. PASOK, in opposition from 1974 to 1 981 , was against Greek membership in the European communities. PASOK, in its first term in office from 1981 to 1985, reversed itself on the issue. During this period, PASOK made no effort to withdraw Greece from the E.E.C. This study examines PASOK's reversal of policy. Two domestic factors are examined in detail: the general economic difficulties of Greece during PASOK's first term, and the role of the powerful agrarian interests.

Howe, Thomas J. "The first battles for Petersburg, June 15-18, 1864." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45775.

Full text
Abstract:

During June 15-18, 1864, the Federal Army of the Potomac launched a series of attacks against the vital Confederate rail center of Petersburg, Virginia. Union leaders believed that capturing Petersburg would force the abandonment of the Rebel capital at Richmond. The assaults failed, however, and the opposing armies settled into a ten-month siege.

This study investigated the opening battles for Petersburg on three levels. First, the strategic dispositions and movements of the Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia are discussed prior to and during the battles. Secondly, the study looks carefully at the tactical situation on each of the four days of fighting. Thirdly, the paper reveals the personal side of combat through the use of soldiers' diaries, letters, and regimental histories. The thesis concludes that Federal failure occurred because of poor Union leadership and staff work, a strong Confederate defense, and extreme exhaustion throughout the Northern army.

Master of Arts

Abstract:
The dissertation is divided into four sections. The first deals with the work experience gained at the Australian War Memorial, followed by that gained at the Abegg Stiftung. Observations on visits to other conservation laboratories and a report on the two international conferences attended, complete sections three and four. Work experience at the Australian War Memorial Textile conservation laboratory involved spending time in assisting with ongoing programs, conservation treatments carried out with supervision, as well as research. The time was divided so that all areas received equal emphasis. Ongoing programs involved the uniform inspections program and the display maintenance program. The involvement with routine tasks of surface cleaning, and with preparation for storage or display, with both programs, is not detailed in the dissertation. Nor can the dissertation include all the treatments of objects. Reference may be made for details on these treatments, to Australian War Memorial Conservation records for objects with the following accession numbers: AWM 1102,/5947,/10487, AWM 7919. However, two treatment reports are included. These are for a pair of flying boots worn by the Baron von Richthofen, and for an embroidered silk souvenir. The boots, now on permanent display were conserved with attention given to the need to preserve historical evidence, the choice of materials used for repair and requirements of display. The silk textile treatment took into consideration the benefits and risks involved in removing a deteriorated backing and relining a silk which was extremely embrittled. In the process it was realised that a facing might give stability to such a deteriorated silk; however, an initial study of facing materials and methods was required and was therefore undertaken and reported on in the dissertation. Whilst inspecting items in the relics collection of the Australian War Memorial a number of rubberised fabrics and other rubber materials were observed to show problems such as hardening, embrittlement, deformation, tackiness or discolouration. It was found that no information had been published on the treatment and preservation of such materials in the conservation literature. A survey on rubber deterioration and preservation literature since 1900 is included in the dissertation. The function, facilities and equipment of the textile conservation department of the Australian War Memorial are described as well as the storage of relics and uniforms. Work experience at the Abegg Stiftung involved assisting with group projects in most instances as well as working independently with supervision. It was therefore decided to report in general on the types of treatment given and give a brief account of the experience and skills gained. An example of a treatment report as was required for the Abegg Stiftung records is included as well as an example of detailed personal notes on the progress and treatment of a 15th century silk chasuble. The Abegg Stiftung is recognised as one of the foremost training centres in textile conservation in Europe. This led me to consider here the benefits and possible limitations of the program from the impressions gained during the three months work experience at the Institute. Round table discussions were held by Mechthilde Flury- Lehmburg which served to raise questions for discussion by textile conservation students and staff. This also permitted a concensus to be reached when items of a complex nature were to be conserved. A record of such a discussion is annexed. The Library of the Institute was frequently consulted by historians, as it specialises in textile conservation literature and many languages are represented, German being predominant. This library was consulted on German literature on textile conservation, and a brief guide to sources is included. Visits were made to a number of textile conservation laboratories in Europe. It was possible as a result of these visits to evaluate various types of equipment which are used for textile conservation. It was seen that although much skilful work was being done, especially in laboratories where more conservative treatments were preferred, there were a number of questions which were raised and remained unanswered. Subjects discussed and research undertaken are reported. The 1IC and ICOM conferences attended, introduced me to international cooperation and activity in conservation research and setting of standards. Information found to be relevant to progress in textile conservation research and related materials is summarised here.

Abstract:
Arbitration is a private judicial system wich enables legal actions to be withdrawn from established jurisdictions and resolved by individuals specially empowered for that particular purpose. However, the parliamentary law and, in france, the statutory laws of 14th may 1980 and 12th may 1981 allow the parties to bring the matter before a judicial court should they wish to contest the arbitrator's decision or see it implemented. Arbitral sentences thus submitted to judges and the latter's rulings, often accompanied by specific comments, have never been thoroughly analysed. The objectif of present study is to bridge this gap by drawing on the wealth of judicial sources to analyse arbitral deisions, their enforcement and the controls to which they are submitted by the judiciary. In the first part, 2. 000 cases of arbitration have been examined under their statistical, legal, sociological and economic aspects. They have, first of all, been classified according to their nature (ad hoc ou institutional). The profile of the actors in the arbitration case, that is to say the litigant parties and the judges, was then drawn up. Finally, both the object and the amount of money invol ved in the arbitral lawsuit have been described

Kaufman, David B. "Polish-Jewish relations during the rebirth of Poland, November 1918-June 28, 1919." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/199.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines Polish-Jewish relations during the pivotal eight months between the declaration of Polish Independence on November 11, 1918 and the formal re-establishment of the Polish state by its recognition by the Allied and Associated Powers at the Paris Peace Conference on June 28, 1919. The thesis explores the background to Polish-Jewish relations in the years immediately preceding the period under investigation in order to place the events in their political and socio-economic context. The key to the present study is a detailed examination of the controversial anti-Jewish outrages that occurred in the disputed Russo-Polish-Ukrainian borderlands, namely in Lwów in November 1918, and at Pińsk in April 1919. It is important not only to scrutinise these events in detail, but furthermore to place them in their full international perspective. The direct result was the imposition of a Minorities Treaty upon Poland, which was largely drafted during the final months of the Peace Conference. Polish anti-Jewish violence was not the only factor that influenced the Allies gathered at Versailles, yet the peacemakers felt compelled to treat Poland as a special case. The Treaty further strained the interdependent links between Poles and Jews, both in Poland and the west, as the dominant group saw it as an unfair limitation on its sovereignty. Polish resentment at the perceived influence of ‘international Jewry’ further heightened tensions between the two, yet the drafting of the Minorities Treaty was emphatically not as a result of the ‘Jewish lobby’ (which was in fact divided) that had gathered in the French capital in an attempt to further Jewish demands in both Eastern Europe and Palestine. The damage done to Polish-Jewish relationships during the crucial period of 1918-1919 not only strained interaction between those groups in the months covered by the thesis, but also exacerbated the Jewish ‘problem’ during the course of the Second Polish Republic and beyond.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with British policy in relation to General Edmund Allenby's command of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (E.E.F.) from June 1917 to November 1919. This thesis divides into two parts: until October 1918 the Palestine campaign of the E.E.F. is evaluated in terms of its position within wider British war strategy, and in particular it is shown how the campaign did very little to help Britain's efforts to defeat the Central powers during the First World War; with the armistice in October 1918 the focus is on the politfcal and imperial aspects of the battlefield victories by Allenby which resulted in the occupation by the E.E.F. of Palestine and Syria. These non-military concerns come to the fore in the post-war peace settlements, and it is shown how the usefulness of the Palestine campaign extended beyond the war's end to November 1919 when the E.E.F. withdrew from Syria. This thesis reveals that the Palestine campaign needs to be analysed not just for its contribution to the defeat of the Central powers, but that it had a non-military dimension which centred round the need to provide Britain with negotiating strength at the Paris Peace Conference so as to provide for long-term British imperial security. Allenby's operations to October 1918 are, therefore, examined for more than just their military significance, and in this work a complete analysis of the Palestine campaign is undertaken. This thesis shows how too often the existing literature on the Palestine campaign concentrates either on the purely military aspect, or focuses on the formation of the modern Middle East. What is typically left out is the connection between the two. It is shown that the Palestine campaign was Clausewitzian in that operations were used as a means to further political ends, and that these political concerns influenced the conduct of the campaign. Allenby's central role in these matters means that this thesis comments on his role and position, not just as a militaiy commander, but also in relation to the political and imperial aspects outlined above.

Abstract:
Between September 1939 and June 1940, the British Expeditionary Force confronted the German threat to France and Flanders with a confused mindset, an uncertain skills-set and an uncompetitive capability. The well-trodden campaign chronology does not do justice to the deep-seated origins of BEF performance, nor does it reveal the campaign's lasting impact on the British Army for the remainder of the war. This study of the command, control and communication systems uncovers how an absence of official guidance and a degree of discretion at every command level created multiple systems which were neither efficient in peacetime nor resilient in wartime. The BEF was made up of personnel with a vast array of experiences gained at imperial postings around the world and over a considerable time period; inevitably these diverse experiences caused variation in all areas of army life and policy. Throughout ,training and deployment" opportunities were missed to establish metric standards of capability and update operating procedures, not least because such topdown prescription was regarded as an infringement of an officer's discretion to command their subordinates as they saw fit. This left units dependent on their commander's energy and open-mindedness to new techniques as much as his experience and training. Peacetime had dangerously ingrained unique habits into many personnel, leaving officers and units deficient in self-awareness and the drive to improve upon satisfactory performance. The BEF was the product of decades of imperial policing, but also months of Phoney War; this unique prelude to combat left it paradoxically complacent about its own abilities and also unclear about the capability and combat tactics of the opponent it faced. It is against this background the campaign was fought and lost.

Abstract:
Geophysical investigations were conducted at the proposed Maricopa SSC site in support of the geotechnical program for the State of Arizona site proposal. Modeling of a gravity survey across Rainbow Valley showed that the minimum depth to bedrock in the center of this basin is 750 meters (2500 feet). Gravity and magnetic surveys in Maricopa Valley between the north and south Maricopa Mountains indicated the possible presence of faults and diabase dikes. Seismic refraction surveys in the area of the proposed Injector Ring complex indicated a buried bedrock ridge about 400 meters (1300 feet) wide and approximately 25 meters (80 feet) below the surface. Geophysical surveys were also conducted at the Twin Buttes Mine near the proposed Sierrita SSC site. These surveys included gravity, seismic refraction, seismic reflection, DC resistivity and IP, and CSAMT surveys. Since the geology and geotechnical properties at the Twin Buttes mine are very well documented from extensive drilling, these surveys provide a calibration of observed geophysical signatures over various rock types.

Abstract:
This research uses the ‘demand-side thesis’ to examine the decline of the Dundee jute industry. In particular, it examines the effect of international competition and the strategic response of the industry during the inter-war (1919-1939) and the post-war (1945-1960s) period to counter this challenge. The strategic response is studied by examining strategies employed at the firm and the industry level. Strategy at the firm level is studied in the form of capability development using the capabilities approach. The thesis also makes an attempt to redress the issue of determinism in the capabilities approach which suggests that the pattern of capability development is governed by path-dependency. By drawing on the techniques employed in the history literature, this research identifies strategic options that were being considered by firms at the time of capability development and examine why certain alternatives were not pursued. This will bring to light aspects other then those associated with path-dependency that played a role in the pattern of capability development. The capabilities developed by firms during the two periods are compared and contrasted in order to understand the pattern over this period. These findings are juxtaposed with the British cotton textile industry, a related sector, to examine the effectiveness of the demand-side thesis in explaining the decline of the jute industry in particular and the textile industry in general. This thesis makes contribution to three areas of literature: First, the thesis helps to further develop the demand-side framework by introducing a new case (Dundee jute industry) and developing a better understanding of strategic response within the jute and textile industry in general. Second, this thesis contributes to the theoretical development of capabilities approach in two specific areas: a) it helps to address the issue of determinism inherent in the capabilities approach through the notion of path-dependency. This was done by also examining the strategic options that were available to firms while developing their capabilities and underlining the reasons for not pursuing them. b) the analysis sheds new light on the nature of branching of capabilities in an industry over a long period. Third, this research makes significant contribution to the existing literature on the business history of the Dundee jute industry, which is sparse. The contributions can be categorised into four key aspects which have not been examined in the current literature: a) period (inter-war and post-war), b) issue (systematic examination of the Dundee jute industry’s decline, strategic response and role of collective strategies), c) method (detailed study of individual firm’s strategies), and d) cross comparison of industry’s experience with related sectors (for example, the cotton industry). Focusing on these issues has helped to throw new light on the challenges, especially technological, facing the industry in developing its strategic response.

Abstract:
Korean calligraphy went through tremendous changes during the twentieth century, and Jung Hyun-bok (1909-1973), a gifted calligrapher, played an important role in bringing about these changes. This thesis focuses on one of Jung's most mature and refined works, "Using the Peak of the Five Elders as a Brush," owned by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. In addition to translating and explicating the poems on the screen, through a close examination of both the form and content of the work I explore how it reflects Jung's values, intentions, and background. This thesis also addresses the question of why some critics have classified Jung as a professional artist and considers some of the ways in which he actually cultivated and projected an image of himself as a traditional literatus.

Flint, E. R. "The Development of British civil affairs and its employment in the British sector of allied military operations during the Battle of Normandy, June to August 1944." Thesis, Department of Applied Science, Security and Resilience, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/4017.

Full text
Abstract:
Civil Affairs and its more robust sibling, Military Government, were military organisations designed to ensure that basic civil order and welfare were maintained in those allied and enemy states encountered on operations during the Second World War. In so doing, they enabled formation commanders to focus on defeating enemy forces without being distracted by possible civilian problems. Using the battle of Normandy as a case study, this research assesses the utility of Civil Affairs in supporting military needs during operations. This contrasts with previous studies that concentrate on aspects of social and diplomatic history. If the need for Civil Affairs was generally axiomatic, there was much debate as to the extent and method of delivery required. Civil Affairs quickly recognised that in dealing with direct problems such as “disorganisation, disease and unrest” it was necessary for seemingly indirect aspects of civilian life to be maintained. Various forms of bureaucratic friction resulted and several Civil Affairs approaches were used, before the model for the North West Europe campaign was agreed. Nevertheless, the organisation employed in Normandy was arguably the most extensive and best prepared of the war. However, it also had to deal with many different civilian problems and in trying military circumstances. Consequently, the battle is fertile ground for the examination of the extent and nature of the organisation’s operational utility. Using primary and secondary sources, this paper argues that Civil Affairs was militarily both useful and necessary. Furthermore, it was able to provide wider diplomatic and political benefits as well as serving core military needs. The research concludes by acknowledging that whilst mistakes were made, the various improvements made to Civil Affairs in preparation for, together with the lessons learnt during, Normandy stood the organisation in good stead for the significantly larger problems encountered later in the war.

Keen, Richard David. "Half a million tons and a goat : a study of British participation in the Berlin airlift, 25 June 1948 - 12 May 1949." Thesis, University of Buckingham, 2013. http://bear.buckingham.ac.uk/9/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Soviet blockade of western Berlin between the 23 June 1948 and 12 May 1949 - and the airlift that was organized to defeat it - was the first major confrontation between the Soviet Bloc on the one side and the United States and its allies on the other. It was at the point where the shared cooperation arising from common interests during the Second World War finally dissolved and became the Cold War with the potential to develop into a hot war. Yet for all its acknowledged importance in the history of the Cold War, no historian has hitherto investigated the British component of the Berlin Airlift to discover how it worked in practice and if British involvement was actually necessary to the success of the Allied operation as a whole, or whether the Airlift could have been undertaken more effectively by different approach. Given its acknowledged importance, the Airlift has been poorly served by its historiography. It forms a very minor part in the post-war histories of Germany; and even in the more specialist scholarly literature on the early stages of the Cold War, it receives scant attention. Insofar as it has received any detailed scrutiny, the Airlift of 1948-9 is presented regularly as a sub-plot in the wider drama of the Berlin Blockade, and it is the US dimension of the Airlift which has produced the best historiography. The American aspect, Operation VITTLES, predominates in the current literature and there is no equivalent on the RAF side to the USAF professional historians' output. Beyond this US dimension, there is a general dearth of academic papers in journals and of scholarly monographs. Popular books exist in quantity providing narrative overviews for the general public but this literature can be based on assumptions about the British dimension to the Airlift that do not stand up when tested against the surviving evidence. This study seeks to address its principal questions - examining the scale and extent of the British participation, and gauging its utility and significance in iii relation to the broader multi-national endeavour to defeat the Blockade - by a close study of the rich and plentiful primary archival sources held in Britain, the United States and elsewhere using the combined methodologies of the historian and the logistician. The thesis evaluates British participation in the Berlin Airlift and reveals that her aircraft were demonstrably indispensable logistically. However, performance - and that of the Royal Air Force especially - was substantially lower than that of the American task force. At the time, the official explanation given to the public was that the USA operated more and larger aircraft. The thesis reveals that there were additional causes. It examines how the Americans might have replaced the British, as was feared within the Foreign Office and the RAF and as they had the French. Redistribution of the whole American task force to bases nearer to Berlin in the British Zone of Germany would have increased the tonnage delivered but the thesis finds it would not have been sufficient. Deploying more US resources is the other possibility investigated and the limitations of American capability to do so are revealed and the potential impact on the plans to continue the Airlift into 1951 identified.
