Abstract:
Tommy (as he was invariably called by his numerous friends) Gold was a most unusual scientist in several respects. One of these is that at school and even as an undergraduate it never crossed his mind that he might become a professional scientist. Only a remarkable chain of events brought this about. He came from a very well–to–do family in Vienna. His father (who was Jewish, while his mother was not) was a hard–working senior director in a major industrial firm. Tommy admired him greatly. It seemed natural to Tommy that he would follow his father in business.

Abstract:
Geoffrey Dearnaley was distinguished for seminal contributions to the fields of low-energy nuclear physics, semiconductor detectors for nuclear radiations, and ion channelling at megaelectronvolt energies. Especially significant was his pioneering research on the ion implantation of semiconductor materials, ion implantation of metals, and ion-assisted coatings. He had a special skill in translating complex scientific concepts into industrially exploitable technologies, so his fundamental research contributions were taken up by industry in the automotive sector, electronics, and engineering. His innovations were seminal in the designs of several ion implantation systems, such as the Lintott implanter, that remained a major force in semiconductor implantation after many years. Later, he led the way with his second-generation ‘Blue Tank’ facility. It was his idea to improve the wear and oxidation resistance of metals by ion implantation, leading to successes as varied as improved resistance to high-temperature corrosion of nuclear fuel cladding and to notable reductions in wear of replacement hip joints. Geoffrey Dearnaley was a fundamental physicist who made significant original contributions to many scientific fields, and his understanding of both science and technology successfully showed industry how to exploit them.

Abstract:
Kenneth Burton was an enthusiastic, lateral-thinking biochemist, with special skills in physical sciences, chemistry and mathematics who, although perhaps best known for his highly cited study of the conditions for the diphenylamine colour reaction for DNA, made outstanding contributions in several important fields. His calculations, which he refined over the years, of the thermodynamic parameters of many biological substances were of the greatest importance in the development of intermediary metabolism. Attracted to bacteriophage systems as a route to tackling the thorny problem of DNA replication, his early discovery that bacteriophage DNA replication precedes phage DNA synthesis set the stage for important developments in our understanding of viral systems and, ultimately, antiviral therapies. His pioneering studies of specific methods for the chemical degradation of DNA molecules were among the first steps towards the determination of nucleotide sequences in DNA at a time when direct chemical degradation seemed to be the only feasible approach.

Abstract:
David Ollis was one of the most influential and significant members of the group of British chemists who rose to prominence during the 1950s and 1960s. In common with other members of this group, he made important and lasting contributions to both the theory and the practice of his chosen discipline. Although the growth of natural product chemistry was less dramatic during the 1970s and beyond, he transposed his activities increasingly into mechanistic studies and so remained one of the leaders of chemistry in the UK. He occupied the Chair of Organic Chemistry at Sheffield University from 1963 to his retirement in 1990, and thereafter continued to be involved in chemistry through an honorary appointment at Birmingham University until his death in 1999.

Abstract:
Raymond Lemieux was one of the outstanding chemists of the second half of the twentieth century. During the four decades from 1950 onwards he dominated the field of carbohydrate chemistry. His rare and special degree of insight into chemical problems resulted in numerous seminal discoveries and observations that influenced organic chemistry extensively, and provided the area of carbohydrate chemistry—and its associated subjects—with extremely significant conceptual and experimental tools. His work was a determining factor in converting this field from an academic specialization into one of great practical importance in chemistry, biology and medicine. His influential role was recognized when, with 21 world-renowned chemists, he was invited by the American Chemical Society to write his autobiography. The highly engaging series of books, Profiles, pathways and dreams , documents the development of modern organic chemistry through the research careers of chemists who made fundamental contributions to organic chemistry over many decades of research. Lemieux's contribution, Explorations with sugars. How sweet it was , is an excellent account of his research from 1946 to 1990 (50)*.

Abstract:
John Postgate was one of the foremost microbiologists of his generation. He is most famous for his lifelong research on sulfate-reducing bacteria and nitrogen fixation and for his seminal contributions to understanding the survival and death of bacteria. John Postgate is also known for his specialist and non-specialist books on science, most notably Microbes and man , first published in 1986 and now in several editions and translated into several languages. He played an important role in the development and dissemination of microbiology and in the leadership of science in the UK. John will also be remembered warmly as the supervisor and mentor of aspiring young microbiologists, several of whom have gone on to distinguished careers in microbiology. His other great love was jazz: he was an amateur cornet player of note, the leader of several jazz groups and a highly knowledgeable writer, reviewer and author of two books on the subject.
