Abstract:

Semiarid, with a scarcity of water resources, Arizona might seem an unlikely state to be threatened by flooding. Flooding in Arizona, however, does indeed pose serious threats to life and property in the state. In fact, because of erosion and scouring in unstable stream channels, certain flood hazards exist in the arid Southwest that are not generally present in humid regions of the United States.

Abstract:

"A fish out of water" is a figure of speech expressing incongruity. At first sight, "Fish farming in the desert" might seem to express a similar sense of dislocation, even futility. But, in fact, fish farming or aquaculture is attracting interest in Arizona. Its supporters, few in number but committed, believe that aquaculture, a field relatively new to the state, has the potential to become a viable Arizona industry.

Abstract:

Increased precipitation from El Niño ensures more abundant vegetative growth, which in turn raises concern about increased fire hazards, especially during Arizona's summer fire season. Whatever fire hazards are due this year to El Niño are not being experienced evenly throughout the state, however, with some areas actually having less fires. And, in some cases, El Niño's legacy may not be apparent this season, but instead be evident by fires in future years.

Was it tribal attorneys pressing water rights claims on Interior Secretary Babbitt? Could California's Congressional delegation, the traditional villain in Arizona water politics, have been involved? Or did Arizona bollix the deal itself by not providing tribes access to excess CAP water or the right to pursue out-of-state leasing, as hinted by Secretary Babbitt?

Abstract:

Le système Rh est le système sanguin érythrocytaire le plus complexe et le plus poly morphe. Il est sous le contrôle de deux gènes homo logues RHD et RHCE et comporte 55 antigènes, parmi lesquels l’antigène D, porté par la protéine RhD, est le plus immunogène et présente un intérêt majeur en terme de Santé Publique. Actuellement, plusieurs centaines d’allèles variants sont répertoriés dans le gène RHD, qui se traduisent par une grande variabilité phénotypique de l’expression de l’antigène D. La plupart du temps, le typage sanguin des individus porteurs d’un variant de l’antigène D n’est souvent pas réalisable par des approches sérologiques, il faut alors avoir recours à des analyses moléculaires pour identifier les anomalies potentielles et déduire le phénotype correspondant. Néanmoins, l’interprétation de ces variants rares et de leurs conséquences sur l’expression de l’antigène demeurent souvent difficiles. Dans ce travail, nous nous sommes intéressés, plus spécifiquement à trois catégories de variants : les variants d’épissage, les variants synonymes et les variants faux-sens. Nous avons étudié l’impact moléculaire et cellulaire de ces variants en développant des approches de génétiques fonctionnelles et observé leurs effets respectifs sur l’altération de l’épissage et/ou sur l’expression de l’antigène D. Ces travaux ont per mis d’avoir une vision globale des différents mécanismes moléculaires impliqués dans la variabilité génétique du système Rh, en particulier sur l’interprétation des variants rares affectant les sites canoniques et les éléments régulateurs de l’épissage, par une approche minigène développée dans notre laboratoire. Puis, au-delà de l’intérêt fondamental de la caractérisation fonctionnelle de ces variants, en association avec les analyses sérologiques, elle présente un intérêt diagnostique dans l’interprétation fonctionnelle de certains phénotypes ambigus et ainsi guider le biologiste dans la prise en charge de la transfusion et de la grossesse<br>Rh system is the most complex and polymorphic blood group system. It’s driven by two homologous genes RHD and RHCE and contains 55 antigens, including the D antigen, carried by the RhD protein, is the most immunogenic and has a major interest in terms of public health. Currently, several hundred variants alleles are listed in the RHD gene, resulting in high phenotypic variability of the D antigen expression. In most cases, blood typing of individuals with a D variant is often not available by serological approaches, so molecular analyses should be used to identify potential defects and deduce the corresponding phenotype. Nevertheless, the interpretation of these rare variants and their consequences on the antigen expression often remain difficult. In this work, we are more specifically interested in three categories of variants: splicing variants, synonymous variants and missense variants. We studied the molecular and cellular impact of these variants by developing functional genetic approaches and observed their respective effects on the splicing alteration and/or on the D antigen expression. This work has provided an overview of the different molecular mechanisms involved in the genetic variability of the Rh system, in particular the interpretation of rare variants affecting the canonical splice sites and the splicing regulatory elements, using a minigene splicing assay developed in our laboratory. Then, beyond the fundamental interest of the functional characterization of these variants, in association with serological analyses, it presents a diagnostic interest in the functional interpretation of certain ambiguous phenotypes. Abstract:

L’augmentation préoccupante de la résistance aux antibiotiques de Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) nécessite la recherche de thérapies alternatives telles que les Lactobacillus. Dans cette thèse, différents travaux ont été réalisés :1) Sur un modèle murin de pneumonie aigüe à PA, nous avons démontré l’effet bénéfique de l’administration intratrachéale d’un mélange de 3 souches de Lactobacillus provenant de lait ou de la cavité orale de patients sains.2) Nous avons ensuite prospectivement étudié la population en Lactobacillus des expectorations de patients atteints de mucoviscidose (CF). La prévalence moyenne de portage était de 61%.3) Parmi ces Lactobacillus issus de l’écosystème respiratoire des patients CF, nous avons constitué deux mélanges de 3 souches de Lactobacillus, sélectionnées pour leur activité anti-élastolytique et antipyocyanine in vitro. L’administration intranasale de ces mélanges à des souris C57Bl/6, 18h avant leur infection par PAO1, améliore significativement la survie à 7 jours des souris, ainsi que la clairance pulmonaire en PAO1 à 24h post-infection. Une diminution significative du recrutement pulmonaire des neutrophiles et des cytokines proinflammatoires était observée, associée à une augmentation de celle en IL-10.Ainsi, cette thèse démontre les effets bénéfiques de l’administration prophylactique des Lactobacillus par voie respiratoire sur la pneumonie aigue à PA. Ce résultat serait lié à l’immunomodulation de ces bactéries.Enfin, les propriétés contre l’élastase et la pyocyanine de ces souches in vitro ne présagent pas de leur activité in vivo, avec le mélange L. paracasei 9N, L. brevis 24C et L. salivarius 20C présentant seulement in vivo la meilleure activité (Brevet BIO17555)<br>The alarming increase in antibiotic resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) requires studying alternative therapies, such as Lactobacillus. In this thesis, several studies were carried out:1) In a murine model of acute PA pneumonia, we have demonstrated the beneficial effect of intratracheal administration of a mixture of three Lactobacillus strains from milk or the oral cavity of healthy patients.2) We then prospectively studied the Lactobacillus population in sputum of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The average prevalence of carry was 61%.3) Lactobacillus from the respiratory ecosystem of CF patients were used to establish two mixtures of 3 Lactobacillus strains. Strains were selected for their antielastolytic and anti-pyocyanin effects in vitro.Intranasal administration of these mixtures to C57Bl / 6 mice, 18h prior to PAO1 infection significantly improves 7-day survival and pulmonary clearance of PAO1 24h postinfection.A significant decrease in lung neutrophil recruitment and pro-inflammatory cytokines was observed, while the production of IL-10 increased.This thesis demonstrates the beneficial effects of prophylactic respiratory administration of Lactobacillus on acute PA pneumonia. Anti-PA properties in vitro are not an indication of the in vivo activity. The mixture containing L. paracasei 9N, L. brevis 24C, and L. salivarius 20C show the best anti-PA activity (Patent BIO17555). This result is likely related to an immunomodulating effect of these bacteria

Abstract:

During 2010 and 2011, major earthquakes caused widespread damage and the deaths of 185 people in the city of Christchurch. Damaged school buildings resulted in state intervention which required amendment of the Education Act of 1989, and the development of ‘site sharing agreements’ in undamaged schools to cater for the needs of students whose schools had closed. An effective plan was also developed for student assessment through establishing an earthquake impaired derived grade process. Previous research into traditional explanations of educational inequalities in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and New Zealand were reviewed through various processes within three educational inputs: the student, the school and the state. Research into the impacts of urban natural disasters on education and education inequalities found literature on post disaster education systems but nothing could be found that included performance data. The impacts of the Canterbury earthquakes on educational inequalities and achievement were analysed over 2009-2012. The baseline year was 2009, the year before the first earthquake, while 2012 is seen as the recovery year as no schools closed due to seismic events and there was no state intervention into the education of the region. National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) results levels 1-3 from thirty-four secondary schools in the greater Christchurch region were graphed and analysed. Regression analysis indicates; in 2009, educational inequalities existed with a strong positive relationship between a school’s decile rating and NCEA achievement. When schools were grouped into decile rankings (1-10) and their 2010 NCEA levels 1-3 results were compared with the previous year, the percentage of change indicates an overall lower NCEA achievement in 2010 across all deciles, but particularly in lower decile schools. By contrast, when 2011 NCEA results were compared with those of 2009, as a percentage of change, lower decile schools fared better. Non site sharing schools also achieved higher results than site sharing schools. State interventions, had however contributed towards student’s achieving national examinations and entry to university in 2011. When NCEA results for 2012 were compared to 2009 educational inequalities still exist, however in 2012 the positive relationship between decile rating and achievement is marginally weaker than in 2009. Human ethics approval was required to survey one Christchurch secondary school community of students (aged between 12 and 18), teachers and staff, parents and caregivers during October 2011. Participation was voluntary and without incentives, 154 completed questionnaires were received. The Canterbury earthquakes and aftershocks changed the lives of the research participants. This school community was displaced to another school due to the Christchurch earthquake on 22 February 2011. Research results are grouped under four geographical perspectives; spatial impacts, socio-economic impacts, displacement, and health and wellbeing. Further research possibilities include researching the lag effects from the Canterbury earthquakes on school age children.

L'autorité parentale n'est pas seulement de droits, elle est aussi de devoirs. A la suite de la séparation des parents, le juge aux ffaires familiales est compétent pour statuer sur l'exercice de cette autorité, lorsqu'un conflit parental persiste entre les parents. Le rôle que nous lui connaissons et qui consiste à régler le conflit parental dans le procès mérite d'être traité. Il permet en effet, de signaler que le juge des enfants est cet autre juge qui a vocation à intervenir, dans l'intérêt de l'enfant. La compétence de ce juge vient bousculer l'organisation judiciaire établie par le JAF. Plus intéressant est le règlement pacifique du conflit parental opéré par le JAF. Lorsque le juge aux affaires familiales est conduit à régler le conflit, de cette manière, deux options s'offrent à lui. Le juge peut, d'une part, homologuer l'accord des parents présenté sous la forme d'une convention parentale, et d'autre part, tenter de régler le conflit, en proposant une mesure de médiation familiale aux parents. Pour l'heure, ce nouveau rôle du JAF a tendance à coexister avec son rôle de juge contentieux et peut être à le supplanter dans un avenir proche

Abstract:

This thesis is devoted to reveal the negative regulators in IGF-1 (Insulin like growth factor 1) stimulated growth of a human breast adenocarcinoma cell line. It is a well established fact that increased circulating levels of IGF-1 correlate with increased risk of breast cancer. IGF-1 activation of its receptor, IGF-1R, is implicated in the progression of breast cancer, where IGF-1 stimulation leads to proliferative and anti-apoptotic responses by stimulating MAPK Erk and PI3K, respectively. In this study, IGF-1 stimulated MCF-7 cells proliferated more in the absence of MAPK JNK, implicating the involvement of MAPK JNK in the negative regulation of IGF-1 stimulated cell growth. In this research study, we show for the first time that IGF-1 stimulation of breast cancer cells induces SHP-1-expression by activating JNK, which in turn, activates RFX-1 and AP-4 transcription factors to allow them to bind to the high-expression region of the SHP-1 P-1 promoter in breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells. Abstract:

L'océan est le plus grand réservoir d'énergie solaire de notre planète. La quantité de chaleur qu'il est capable de stocker est modulée par sa circulation complexe, opérant sur une vaste gamme d’échelles allant du centimètre à la dizaine de milliers de kilomètres. Cette thèse s'intéresse à deux types de processus océaniques: les tourbillons de mésoéchelle, d'une taille de 100 à 300 km, et les fronts de sous-mésoéchelle, d'une taille inférieure à 50 km. L'idée communément admise est que les mouvements agéostrophiques de sous-mésoéchelle sont principalement confinés à la couche de mélange océanique de surface et sont faibles dans l'océan intérieur. Cette vision classique de la dynamique océanique repose sur l'hypothèse que l'océan intérieur est en équilibre quasi-géostrophique, empêchant la formation de forts gradients de densité en profondeur. Cette thèse remet en question ce paradigme en se basant sur des observations CTD in situ à haute résolution collectées par des éléphants de mer instrumentés, des images satellite d’élévation de la surface de l’océan, et des sorties de modèle à haute résolution dans le Courant Circumpolaire Antarctique.Les résultats indiquent que les mouvements agéostrophiques sont (i) générés par le champ tourbillonnaire de mésoéchelle via des processus defrontogenèse, et (ii) ne sont pas limités à la couche de mélange de surface ; bien au contraire, ils pénètrent dans l'océan intérieur jusqu'à 1000 m deprofondeur. Ces fronts agéostrophiques de sous-mésoéchelle sont associés à d'importants flux de chaleur dirigés de l'intérieur de l'océan vers la surface, d'une amplitude comparable aux flux air-mer.Cet effet peut potentiellement altérer la capacité de stockage de chaleur de l'océan et devrait être le plus fort dans les zones tourbillonnaires telles que le Courant Circumpolaire Antarctique, le Kuroshio et le Gulf Stream, les trois courants clefs du système climatique. Il apparaît ainsi que les fronts agéostrophiques de sous-mésoéchelle représentent une voie importante, mais encore largement méconnue, pour le transport de chaleur, de nutriments et de gaz entre l'intérieur et la surface de l'océan, avec des répercussions potentiellement majeures pour les systèmes biogéochimique et climatique<br>The ocean is the largest solar energy collector on Earth. The amount of heat it can store is modulated by its complex circulation, which spans a broad range of spatial scales, from centimeters to thousands of kilometers. This dissertation investigates two types of physical processes: mesoscale eddies (100-300 km size) and submesoscale fronts (£ 50 km size). To date, ageostrophic submesoscale motions are thought to be mainly trapped within the ocean surface mixed layer, and to be weak in the ocean interior. This is because, in the classical paradigm, motions below the mixed layer are broadly assumed to be in quasigeostrophic balance, preventing the formation of strong buoyancy gradients at depth. This dissertation introduces a paradigm shift; based on a combination of high-resolution in situ CTD data collected by instrumented elephant seals, satellite observations of sea surface height, and high-resolution model outputs in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, we show that ageostrophic motions (i) are generated by the backgound mesoscale eddy field via frontogenesis processes, and (ii) are not solely confined to the ocean surface mixed layer but, rather, can extend in the ocean interior down to depths of 1 000 m. Deepreaching ageostrophic fronts are shown to drive an anomalous upward heat transport from the ocean interior back to the surface that is larger than other contributions to vertical heat transport and of comparable magnitude to air-sea fluxes. This effect can potentially alter oceanic heat uptake and will be strongest in eddy-rich regions such as the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the Kuroshio Extension, and the Gulf Stream, all of which are key players in the climate system. As such, ageostrophic fronts at submesoscale provide an important, yet unexplored, pathway for the transport of heat, chemical and biological tracers, between the ocean interior and the surface, with potential major implications for the biogeochemical and climate systems

Médaille à double face, l’excès de pouvoir judiciaire se dédouble selon qu’il caractérise le comportement du juge qui est sorti du cercle de ses attributions ou son attitude lorsqu’il refuse de juger ou de se reconnaître un pouvoir que la loi lui confère. Cette dichotomie entre excès de pouvoir positif d’une part, et excès de pouvoir négatif d’autre part, est majoritairement étrangère à l’étude de l’excès de pouvoir administratif. Bien que désormais entendu plus largement que son pendant judiciaire, l’excès de pouvoir de l’administration n’est jamais présenté comme un concept susceptible de se dédoubler en fonction de la nature positive ou négative de l’illégalité commise. Ce paradoxe résulte moins de l’absence d’une telle dualité que de la prédominance d’une conception historiquement positive de l’excès de pouvoir administratif qui ramène toute illégalité à un dépassement par l’autorité administrative des limites assignées à son pouvoir. L’exploration des « diverses manifestations caractérisées de l’excès de pouvoir » suffit à constater qu’en filigrane des classifications traditionnelles, les illégalités négatives sont diffuses et multiples. Elles ont en commun de traduire la violation négative par l’autorité administrative des normes qui s’imposent à elle dans son activité juridique, soit parce que l’acte est entaché d’un vice négatif, soit parce qu’elle a illégalement refusé d’adopter un acte positif. Le dessin des contours d’une conception négative de l’excès de pouvoir permet de constater que ses manifestations appellent, de la part du juge administratif, l’exercice de pouvoirs particuliers. L’émancipation progressive de la dimension négative de son office pour lui permettre d’agir positivement à destination de l’administration ou directement sur l’acte administratif répond à un tel impératif. Symptomatique, à bien des égards, de réflexions structurelles qui traversent l’étude du contentieux administratif, l’étude de l’excès de pouvoir négatif de l’administration invite à la réflexion sur la nature changeante des relations tissées par le juge avec l’administration dont il assure le contrôle des actes et le justiciable aux attentes duquel il cherche à répondre<br>Double-sided medal, the judicial abuse of power is doubled depending on whether it characterizes the behavior of the judge who has left the circle of his attributions or his attitude when he refuses to judge or to recognize a power that the law confers on him. This dichotomy between positive abuse of power on the one hand, and negative abuse of power on the other hand, is largely foreign to the study of the abuse of power of the administration. Although now understood more broadly than its judicial counterpart, the abuse of power of the administration is never presented as a concept susceptible to duplicate according to the positive or negative nature of the committed illegality. This paradox results less from the absence of such a duality than from the predominance of a historically positive conception of the abuse of power of the administration which reduces any illegality to an overrun by the administrative authority of the limits assigned to its power. The exploration of 'the various manifestations characterized by abuse of power' suffices to note that under the traditional classifications, negative illegalities are diffuse and multiple. They have in common that they reflect the negative violation by the administrative authority of the standards imposed on it in its legal activity, either because the act is tainted with a negative defect, or because it has illegally refused to adopt a positive act. The nature of these illegalities, the sum of which draws the outlines of a negative conception of abuse of power, calls for the exercise of special powers on the part of the administrative judge. The gradual emancipation of the negative dimension of one's role to enable it to act positively for the administration or directly on the administrative act responds to such an imperative. Symptomatic, in many respects, of structural reflections that run through the study of administrative litigation, the study of the negative abuse of power of the administration invites reflection on the changing nature of the relations forged by the judge with the administration of which it ensures the control of acts and the litigant whose expectations it meets

Abstract:

This dissertation presents one of the most comprehensive computer simulations to date of a geomagnetic storm. During the geomagnetic storm of June 4--5, 1991, five spacecraft took measurements of conditions within the inner magnetosphere, including measurements of the electric and magnetic fields and the particle distribution at several different locations. These data are used to test the theoretical understanding of magnetospheric physics by comparisons to the Rice Convection Model (RCM). The RCM is a first-principles model of the inner magnetosphere that calculates the movement of magnetospheric particles, the currents into and out of the magnetosphere, and the magnetospheric electric field patterns. Furthermore, these comparisons provide answers to some of the pressing questions in magnetospheric physics: How strong does the shielding electric field become during a magnetic storm? Can a self-consistently calculated electric field inject plasma sheet particles to within 3 Earth radii of the Earth? How much of the increase in the ring current is due to the injection of plasma sheet particles and how much is due to the energization of pre-existing particles? The comparisons between the RCM electric field results and the corresponding measurements show very good agreement between the observations and the models, and indicate that a fairly strong electric field develops during the storm. Furthermore, comparisons of RCM calculated particle fluxes and the observations indicate that a self-consistently calculated electric field is able to inject plasma sheet particles deep into the inner magnetosphere, and that this injection is the dominant cause of the increased ring current.

Abstract:

Ce mémoire est un projet d'exégèse biblique féministe. Il a pour objet les personnages féminins de Déborah et de Yaël dans les chapitres 4 et 5 du livre des Juges. Ces femmes font figure d'exception dans le livre des Juges dont les nombreux personnages féminins sont surtout des victimes. En effet, Déborah et Yaël exercent violence et/ou pouvoir: l'une en raison de son leadership pluriel auprès du peuple d'Israël et de son armée; l'autre en tant que meurtrière de Sisera, le chef de l'armée cananéenne. Elles apparaissent toutes deux dans le récit de Jg 4 et le chant de Jg 5, deux versions de la même histoire. Ce mémoire s'inscrit à la suite des travaux de Bal (1988; 1995) sur les rapports entre genre féminin et meurtre en Jg 4-5 et s'inspire de la théorie de la performativité du genre de Judith Butler (2006). Il porte précisément sur les thématiques du genre, de la violence et du pouvoir, et a pour but de cerner les représentations du genre féminin déployées par Déborah et Yaël à travers leurs actes violents et leurs gestes de souveraineté. Deux hypothèses sous-tendent un tel projet. D'abord, l'acte violent, et par extension le geste de souveraineté, sont le véhicule de contenus genrés. Ensuite, bien que l'idéologie patriarcale imprègne l'ensemble de la bible hébraïque, des espaces de liberté pour les femmes existent à l'intérieur des passages relatifs aux personnages de Déborah et de Yaël. De nombreuses méthodes aussi bien diachroniques que synchroniques ont été requises afin de mener a bien une telle recherche: critique textuelle, traductologie, philologie, analyse littéraire, analyse structurelle, critique des formes et narratologie. Le premier chapitre a permis d'établir le texte à partir duquel l'exploration des féminités de Déborah et de Yaël a été possible. En effet, s'y trouvent la critique textuelle et la traduction des chapitres 4 et 5 du livre des Juges. Le second chapitre porte sur les représentations du genre féminin de Déborah, la prophétesse et la juge du récit en prose de Jg 4. Nous avons pu constater que, dans le cas de ce personnage, féminité et puissance sont étroitement liées. De cette « femme de flammes » dépend non seulement le déclenchement des combats, mais aussi la présence divine dont elle est la porte-parole. Par ailleurs, sa fonction de juge s'exerce à la fois dans ses dimensions judiciaire, religieuse, politique et militaire. À travers Déborah, le féminin apparaît clairement comme le sexe fort du récit en prose. Le troisième chapitre traite de nouveau de Déborah, mais telle qu'elle apparaît dans le cantique. Cette puissante chantre dispose d'un pouvoir à la fois lyrique, religieux et politico-militaire. Son discours, particulièrement violent dans les derniers versets portant sur Yaël et la mère de Sisera, évoque à la fois une conscience aiguë de la condition féminine en contexte de violence guerrière et l'impossibilité d'une réelle solidarité féminine en contexte patriarcal. La Yaël du récit en prose est le sujet du quatrième chapitre. La meurtrière y fait la démonstration d'une féminité où se côtoient les stéréotypes féminins de la mère et de la femme adultère/étrangère et plusieurs traits « typiquement » masculins. Sa masculinisation va de pair avec la féminisation et l'anéantissement de l'ennemi qu'elle assassine, Sisera. Le cinquième chapitre du mémoire porte sur les représentations féminines de Yaël dans le cantique. La féminité de Yaël y apparaît d'abord en termes « héroïques », entre autres en raison de la bénédiction qu'elle reçoit. Cette femme étrangère et nomade évoque, à travers les représentations de sa féminité, à la fois l'idéal de la femme nourricière et l'anti-modèle de la femme séductrice. Elle se caractérise avant tout par son ambiguïté et sa grande violence. L'agonie de Sisera entre ses cuisses suggère une imagerie maternelle particulièrement souffrante alors même que c'est un homme qui est violé et violenté. Bref, Déborah et Yaël apparaissent toutes deux comme de véritables héroïnes. C'est en effet un type de féminité héroïque, forte de plusieurs traits dits masculins, que leur fréquentation des lieux de pouvoir et de violence a contribué à construire. Being implemented with Herbart’s 4-stage teaching method, the line teaching constructs students’ knowledge of the concept of lines so that they can develop interest in art appreciation. The research purposes are shown below: I. To explore the design of the courses to which the Herbart’s 4-stage teaching method is applied II. To explore the implementation of Herbart’s 4-stage teaching method in line teaching in elementary schools The line implications and children’s performance on lines are combined through the analysis of literature; Herbart’s 4-stage teaching method is explored to develop suitable teaching design so as to assist students developing interest in learning conceptual knowledge. The action research method is also a cyclic process involving planning, acting, observing and introspecting. This research studies 10 schoolchildren in the fifth grade for 4 weeks, including 8 modular courses. Based on related research findings and results, the conclusions of this research are shown below: I. The teaching activities of lines that suit elementary schools can be developed through the concept of line and Herbart’s 4-stage teaching method. II. Conducting line teaching with Herbart’s 4-stage teaching method can trigger students’ interesting in learning so as to enable them to be creative in creating lines.
