Abstract:
Cyril Offord was one of the most distinguished and certainly the most senior of British mathematical analysts. With J.E. Littlewood, F.R.S., he pioneered the subject of probabilistic analysis by studying the typical behaviour of the zeros of a random polynomial with real coefficients, or an entire function.

Full text
Abstract:
Ruth Ann Sanger's scientific career was concerned with the delineation and mapping of human blood group genes by simple manual methods using, as tools, blood group antibodies and the agglutination reaction followed by statistical analysis of the results. Her active period coincided with the flowering of the whole subject of blood groups, which was initiated by the recognition of the clinical significance of the Rh antigens and the rediscovery of the antiglobulin reaction by Coombs, Mourant and Race (Coombs et al. 1945). In these days of ‘high-technology’ research, it is salutary to recognize that the complex body of knowledge that has been accumulated about blood groups has been derived by using the very simple technique of the visible cross-linking of red cells by antibodies specific for the blood group antigens present on the red cell surface. Landsteiner had by chance discovered the ABO blood group system in 1900 with the use of the agglutination reaction, but little progress was made in the next 45 years and we now know that the main reason for this is that most blood group antibodies are not physically capable of bringing about the cross-linking and agglutination of red cells on their own. This problem was solved by the introduction of the antiglobulin reaction, which uses a secondary antibody to bring about the cross-linking of blood group antibodies already attached to red cells.

Wheeler, Raymond L. "Sir Christopher Sydney Cockerell, C.B.E., R.D.I. 4 June 1910 — 1 June 1999." Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society 47 (January 2001): 67–89. http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rsbm.2001.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Christopher Sydney Cockerell was born in Cambridge on 4 June 1910. His father, Sir Sydney Carlyle Cockerell, was at that time Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge, a position he was to hold for nearly 30 years. He had formerly been secretary to William Morris and the Kelmscott Press. His mother was a talented artist known for her superb illuminated manuscripts. Christopher was an only son, with two sisters. His distinguished father's very strong personality made early relationships with him rather difficult. Fortunately he adored his mother, who had a profound influence on him. The Cockerell household entertained many distinguished visitors such as George Bernard Shaw, Joseph Conrad, Thomas Hardy, Freya Stark and Siegfried Sassoon. Sir Sydney was very disappointed when Christopher showed very little interest in literature, public affairs and other aesthetic pursuits of such visitors. It was only when T.E. Lawrence stayed at their home that he showed an interest—this was in Lawrence's 1000 cc Brough Superior motorcycle, which caused his father to remark that Christopher was ‘no better than a garage hand’ (Blunt 1964).

Abstract:
Michael Szwarc was born in Będzin, an industrial town in the south of Poland, as an only son of a Jewish family. Michael received his pre–college and college education in Warsaw and in 1932 received his degree in chemical engineering from the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute. After graduation he married in 1933 Maria Frenkel (Marysia), whose brother married his younger sister Rala. From 1933 to 1935 he worked in Poland as a chemical engineer. In 1935 he emigrated to Palestine (today's Israel) and after a year was joined there by his sister and brother–in–law. Two of his three children were born during his stay in Jerusalem, where he was engaged in research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and from which he gained a PhD in organic chemistry. In late 1945 he went to England, where he joined the group under Professor Michael Polanyi FRS in Manchester.
