Abstract:
"A fish out of water" is a figure of speech expressing incongruity. At first sight, "Fish farming in the desert" might seem to express a similar sense of dislocation, even futility. But, in fact, fish farming or aquaculture is attracting interest in Arizona. Its supporters, few in number but committed, believe that aquaculture, a field relatively new to the state, has the potential to become a viable Arizona industry.

Those who labor in the water resources field may at times feel their efforts to be slighted. Abstract:
Increased precipitation from El Niño ensures more abundant vegetative growth, which in turn raises concern about increased fire hazards, especially during Arizona's summer fire season. Whatever fire hazards are due this year to El Niño are not being experienced evenly throughout the state, however, with some areas actually having less fires. And, in some cases, El Niño's legacy may not be apparent this season, but instead be evident by fires in future years.

Washes and arroyos cut or carve patterns into desert surfaces and are as much a natural form of the Arizona landscape as serrated mountains. Meandering over much of the desert, their crevices help make up the texture and shape of desert lands. Indeed, even in developed and urbanized desert areas, washes and arroyos often remain a conspicuous feature, a natural remnant within the urban fabric.

Semiarid, with a scarcity of water resources, Arizona might seem an unlikely state to be threatened by flooding. Flooding in Arizona, however, does indeed pose serious threats to life and property in the state. Abstract:
Cliches come easy when the importance of water is discussed. Water is life. Water is destiny. "Whiskey is for drinking and water is to fight over" is an oft used phrase to acknowledge water's more immediate influence, especially in the West. Many speakers have proclaimed that water is a driving force in western politics and a wave upon which much of the economic activities of the region rise and fall. In short, water is pretty important stuff.

Abstract:
This study identifies the flora of the Eagletail Mountain Region, an area covering approximately 100,600 acres, located in west-central Arizona including the Eagletail Mountains, Granite Mountains, portions of the Harquahala Valley, and Cemetery Ridge near Clanton Well. The region is located 129 km (80 mi) west of Phoenix and 24 km (15 mi) south of Interstate 10. Plants were collected over a six-year period, beginning September, 2004 and ending May, 2010, including two wet winters and two wet summers. A total of702 collections were made covering 292 species that represented 63 families. Additional information on the region included in the thesis is: 1) an analysis of the climate, based on 20 years of rainfall records, 2) a prehistory and history identifying archeological sites, 3) an analysis of food plants used by the Native Americans that suggested how they were able to live in the region, 4) a paleo-botanical history based on an evaluation of pack-rat midden collections from mountain ranges around the region, 5) a comparison of the trees, shrubs, and perennials of the Eagletail Mountain Region with those of the Sierra Estrella and Kofa Mountains, and 6) a survey of non-native species. The habitats that the plants occupied based on climate and soils included were: 1) the bottoms and sides of sandy/ gravelly washes, 2) bajada slopes-volcanic soils, 3) bajada slopes-granitic sandy soils, 4) slot canyons/rock outcrops, 5) desert pavement, and 6) open valleys. Each habitat has its own characteristic species composition and distribution.

Abstract:
The Tohono O'odham (formerly Papago) Nation and the U.S. government filed suit in 1975 against groundwater pumpers in Pima County, seeking tribal water rights under the Winters doctrine. After extensive negotiations, Congress passed the Southern Arizona Water Resources Settlement Act (SAWRSA) in 1982, which called for the Nation to give up its Winters claim in exchange for 66,000 a-f of CAP water, 10,000 a-f of groundwater rights, and financial assistance in putting the water to use. Ten years and millions of dollars later, no water has been delivered, no long-term supply has been identified, no consensus has been reached on how to use the water, the lawsuit has not been dismissed, and Congress is being asked to amend SAWRSA. The most significant change from a decade ago is that today's conflict is not between the Nation and outsiders, but rather is within the Nation.

Howe, Thomas J. "The first battles for Petersburg, June 15-18, 1864." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45775.

Full text
Abstract:

During June 15-18, 1864, the Federal Army of the Potomac launched a series of attacks against the vital Confederate rail center of Petersburg, Virginia. Union leaders believed that capturing Petersburg would force the abandonment of the Rebel capital at Richmond. The assaults failed, however, and the opposing armies settled into a ten-month siege.

This study investigated the opening battles for Petersburg on three levels. First, the strategic dispositions and movements of the Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia are discussed prior to and during the battles. Secondly, the study looks carefully at the tactical situation on each of the four days of fighting. Thirdly, the paper reveals the personal side of combat through the use of soldiers' diaries, letters, and regimental histories. The thesis concludes that Federal failure occurred because of poor Union leadership and staff work, a strong Confederate defense, and extreme exhaustion throughout the Northern army.

Master of Arts

Abstract:
Nam June Paik (1932-2006) is well known as the father of video art. However, this study demonstrates the importance of his earlier interactive art (1961-63), which historically has been overshadowed by his video art. At the climax of his career in interactive art, Paik introduced his two-way art to the public at his first solo exhibition in Wuppertal, West Germany, in 1963. Interactive art itself has been a peripheral area in the history of art, and it has plural pioneers across disciplinary boundaries. Among the several origins of interactive art, Nam June Paik utilized music as a fundamental approach to design the emerging art. Concentrating on Paik’s music theory and practice in West Germany, my research traces the unexplored academic area of his articles about new music in the Korean newspaper Chayushinmun(1958-59). The perspective in his articles toward new music became a significant foundation for his progressive interactive art. Based on his music background, Paik knew how to incorporate musical instruments and devices into his interactive art. Finally, this study will articulate a concrete relationship between Paik’s musical experiences and his interactive art. It argues that his interactive pieces, based on his musical experiences, make him one of the most creative pioneers of interactive art.

As if Arizona did not have enough water-supply worries due to population growth and drought, the state is now contending with an application to transfer groundwater from Arizona to Nevada. Of the varied and perplexing issues the requested out-of-state transfer raises, one the most significant and far-reaching is whether Arizona law can protect state water resources from such transfers. This is the first time the state water export law has been put to the test; it very likely won’t be the last. Ballyram, T. "Prevalence and predictors of new episodes in patients with bipolar disorder at Dr George Mukhari hospital over a one year period (June 2007-June 2008)." Thesis, University of Limpopo (Medunsa), 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/394.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MMed in Psychiatry) -- University of Limpopo, 2010
Background: Bipolar disorder is a lifelong illness typically presenting with frequent relapses and/or recurrences. Bipolar disorder carries a high morbidity and mortality and can cause significant functional impairment. In understanding the relapsing course of the illness, chronicity may be reduced by preventing or delaying the occurrence of new episodes. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to establish the prevalence of new episodes in patients with bipolar I disorder and to determine predictors of new episodes. Methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive study based on the review of medical records of patients with bipolar I disorder seen at Dr. George Mukhari Hospital – psychiatry unit between the period of 1 June 2007 to 1 June 2008. Data concerning sociodemographic parameters of the patients and psychiatric information was collected using a data collection sheet. Results: Data was extracted and analysed from a total of 143 patient records. Ninety (63%) experienced new episodes and fifty-three patients (37%) did not have any new episodes. Seventy-nine patients (55%) had one or more manic episodes (mean=0.64) and nineteen (13.38 %) had one or more depressive episodes. (Mean=0.14). The maximum number of new episodes was 2 and the mean was 0.78. The most recent episode was manic in seventy-six patients (84%). The mean number of hospital admissions was 0.88. Of the patients that had new episodes, the age ranged from 18 to more than 55 years, the vast majority were black (94%) and of Christian faith (97%). More than half were female (58%) and single (49%), with 1-2 children (48%). The majority achieved high school education (60%), and were unemployed (70%). Only 47% were receiving a disability grant. New episodes were more prevalent in patients who experienced a younger age of onset of illness (41% in the 18-24 year age group) and who were ill for more than ten years (43%). Less than half had a positive family history of mental illness (43%), 39% had a history of substance use, the most common substance being alcohol (54%), and 39% suffered from one or more comorbid medical illnesses. 78% of the patients who had new episodes were on antipsychotics, 93% were on mood stabilisers, and 69% were on a xii combination of mood stabilisers and antipsychotics. The only factor that was significantly predictive of new episodes was poor compliance. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of relapse in patients with bipolar I disorder, particularly to the manic pole. Compliance with medication remains a serious problem and is associated with the occurrence of new episodes. Improved treatments should include biopsychosocial strategies, identification of risk factors for relapse/recurrence and early and consistent intervention.

Abstract:
The Fete de l'Etre supreme, celebrated throughout France on the 20 Prairial Year II, (8th June 1794), has been the subject of detailed comment by historians since the Revolution, the overwhelming majority of whom have concentrated on the political importance of the festival in the history of the Jacobin administration and in the career of its instigator, Maximilien Robespierre. The intention of this thesis is to re-examine the cultural evidence for the proposition that the Fete was a major benchmark in the cultural development of revolutionary France by evaluating both its immediate cultural impact and its importance to the development of the culture of the later stages of the Revolution. After a brief overview of how historians viewed the events of 20 Prairial, the thesis will first consider why Robespierre might have felt it necessary to proclaim a quasi-religious system such as the Culte of the Supreme Being at this stage of the Revolution, secondly how the French people reacted to his proposal, and finally how the various elements of the Fete integrated with the culture of the period. It will then examine the celebrations not only in Paris but also in other cities, towns and villages throughout France, as well as investigating the financial problem for central, regional, and local government in having to meet the unforeseen extra expense of this event. After examining the reaction to the Fete throughout France as shown in the work of contemporary commentators, this thesis will attempt to prove that the Fete de l'Etre supreme of 20 Prairial Year II, marked the watershed between the exaggerated simplicity and utilitarianism of the early years of the Revolution and the extravagant, colourful and sensual culture of the Directoire and the Consulat.
