The avifauna of Rottnest Island, W.A., has been surveyed four times between 1904 and 1983: by Lawson in 1904, Glauert (1928), Storr between 1953 and 1962, and ourselves between 1981 and 1983. There were three recorded extinctions and 10 immigrations in the 79-year period, but none of the extinctions and only three of the immigrations could be regarded as valid for calculating natural turnover rates. The remainder had been influenced by human activity; therefore the avifauna extinction rate for Rottnest Island was 0, the immigration rate was 0.04% per year for non-marine species of bird and the

One new species and three new distribution records for the family Crangonidae (Crustacea: Decapoda) are reported from Western Australia. The new species closely resembles Philocheras fasciatus (Risso, 1816), but can be distinguished easily by the absence of lobe-like folds on either side of the middle line of the carapace, the presence of a lateral carina extending from the branchiostegal spine, the longer middorsal carina and distolateral tooth of the antennal

This study explores the notion of fiqh al-aqalliyat (minority jurisprudence) in Western societies with a focus on Australian Muslims. It argues that, despite enabling Western Muslims to formulate a contextspecific jurisprudence to their newly adopted homelands, fiqh alaqalliyat remains fiercely debated in Islamic studies. Critics of minority fiqh reveal several contention points relating to its lack of applicability in certain social and political contexts; exploitation of legal maxims relating to easing hardship for Muslims; and its overly integrationist mentality. Australia has seen wide ranging debates about the High Court's implied rights jurisprudence during the 1990s. The Constitution has been found to limit the legal control of political discussion. The doctrine survives, although apparently with less energy, after changes in the Court's composition during 1995 and decisions such as McGinty v Western Australia. Most commentators suggest the Court has stepped back from its previous activism. Two forthcoming decisions may even remove political discussion as an issue of constitutional doctrine, at least in relation to the law of civil defamation. Foll
