Full textGuizot, who had a determining political influence in the first part of the 19th century, also developed an original thought mainly formed just before the july revolution and whose interdependent elements are ethics, history and politics. Social and political stability being at stake in post-revolutionary France, a new thought was required : it could thus explain the generating historical process and the purposes of mankind -the moral ideal that must achieved. Born in a middle-class protestant family from the languedoc bourgeoisie, Guizot was attached to the 1789 revolution which had laid the foundations of a new order recognizing and promoting his social class at the expense of the old aristocracy. Yet, his education, his culture and sources of influence (mostly from Geneva, Germany and Britain) made him a christian spiritualist intellectual, opposed to the "sensualist" philosophy held responsible for the excesses of the revolution. Through print, books and teaching, guizot developed various forms of activity. Through his praise of morality and his interest in education matters, he partly renewed political thought and gave a new impetus to history. "doctrinaire" adviser of the restauration's government, he became, after 1820, an opponent. A modern history professor in the sorbonne, he was at the apex of his popularity when the 1830 revolution broke out

Between 1810 and 1826 commercial interests, territorial ambitions, geopolitical considerations and ideological sympathies are all components of the relations between the two Americas. My aim has been to evaluate the importance and the weight of each one of these components throughout the first years of the history of early inter-american relations and to assess the process of creation of an American hemisphere

Full textThe study of the history, administration and statute of paris music and declamation conservatory allows us to apprise its original and fondamental impact on the society of the end of xviiith century and the beginning of the next one: despite a lot of vicissitudes, this state institution was aiming to become the great establishment of higher education able to fill the vacancy of the musical and dramatic education in france. The conservatory had also among its attributions the music diffusion and historical preservation. The unprecedented brightness of this institutional norm of large scale was exercised in province and abroad also

Full textIn the short history of french louisiana, which has lasted only six decades, the first half was more intensively studied by historians than the second one. The beginnings, thanks to the masterful work of marcel giraud, which has not its like for the period hefore 1731, are now well-known. By contrast the period which follows the retrocession has not been well researched. The works of villiers du terrage and guy fregault covered the years after 1743. So everything was to be done for the years 1731-1743, the chronological framework of my research. This period constitutes a whole. That's the reason why i have adopted a thematic approach to deal with it. Its unity resides in the last government of bienville. The original documentation is immense and based on the important resources of the archives of the colonies and of the marine. I have scrutinized the archives of the minister of foreign affairs and of the national library. Besides these manuscripts, i have used collections of printed documents, ships's logs, tracts. Finally i have consulted the atlas and maps deposited at the national library and the "bibliotheque du depot des cartes de la marine". Drawing the balance sheet of the sedentary colonization and analyzing its major trends is the central theme of my research. The emphasis bears on two approaches : socio-economic and geopolitical. In the first part (5 chapters), i deal with the retrocession of the colony and the administrative change with results from it. The second one (8 chapters) treats of the peopling and the exploitation of the west and the relations with the other colonial foreign powers and the native tribes

Full textThe case of California brings to light the imperial character of nation-building in Mexico and the United States in the early 19th century. Concerning Mexico, the equality of Indians proclaimed by Independence proves itself a hard reach. The missions are so important to control the Indians that the government has to delay their end. Moreover, the Indians have their own perception of the meaning of equality and sovereignty on their land. Settlers and soldiers are at first still attached to the colonial System as it is. But Mexican governors and others convince a handful of young people to turn to a public career and the conception of California as a political project. A local elite comes to existence and is ready to revolt when they consider their rights flouted. Those revolts can be compared to other federalist revolts in Mexico as well as with settlers revolt in other settlers colonies. The political culture and the relationship with Mexico also evolves with the increase in circulations from the 1830s. The South becomes more connected to Mexico than the North, that becomes more connected to Oregon and the Western United States. Concerning the United States, the hopes of their consul at Monterey to promote a peaceful annexation is ruined by the attack of a frontier post by recent migrants in order to defend their right ; to the land and to a « true republic ». This confrontation between Mexican-Californians settlers and United States migrants is one of two national and imperial projects on a same territory and illustrates the ambiguity of claiming sovereignty, liberty and equality on a conquered territory

Full textThe expression of "painters of Parma" we mean Correggio and Parmigianino. These two artists have held an important position in the french art criticism in the 17th and 18th century. In this work we intend to answer the following question: how were Correggio and Parmigianino considered in France before 1789? This interrogation brought us first to study the iconographic origins, that is to say the painting- and drawing-collections, the copies and prints from the pictures by the painters of Parma. Then we tried to collect the main french writings about both painters. We end by a study of the stylistic influence of the painters of Parma on french art from 16th to 18th century. From the investigation of the french criticism comes out an image of Correggio and Parmigianino which differs slightly from our actual vision

Full textIn a monographic frame, we tried to analyse and to seize the various aspects of under-population of a congo area : the massif of chaillu, during a one centure period from 1860 to 1960. The matter is to search whether the underpopulation was a constant in the past or a purely accidental fact. The study which is in first an historic one has used the resources of other subjects as anthropology, geography, sociology, demography, economy, etc. . . , complex but useful spheres, which let us understand the social and cultural diversity of the massif of chaillu population. This work mainly bases itself on various sources : travels and explorations narratives, ethnographic descriptions, colonial records and oral traditions. All these written and oral sources, exploited, made us able to pull out the conclusions about the under-population of the massif of chaillu chich began really before colonization. The one and its rough methods only worsened an already ancient phenomenon
