Abstract:
This chapter examines Major League Baseball's (MLB) drug testing policy under Commissioner Peter Ueberroth, the man who inherited Bowie Kuhn's responsibilities and with them baseball's drug problems. Under Ueberroth's guidance, the league appeared to enjoy a remarkable renaissance. Nevertheless, there was something illusory about the success of Ueberroth's tenure: he struck out on the issue of drugs. This chapter considers Ueberroth's mandatory drug testing policy as part of his campaign to eliminate drugs from baseball in the wake of the Pittsburgh drug trial. It also discusses the league's joint drug policy with the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), along with the dispute between the union and team owners over the issue of drug testing. The test case for the MLBPA's position would stem from the proliferation of contract clauses requiring voluntary drug testing.

Abstract:
According to Adams’ thesis the probability of a conditional is the conditional probability of the consequent given the antecedent. According to Stalnaker semantics, a conditional is true at a world just in case its consequent is true at all closest antecedent worlds to the original world. The chapter argues that Adams’ thesis and Stalnaker semantics are ways of cashing out the same ‘Ramsey test’ idea. Unfortunately, a well-known class of triviality theorems shows that Adams’ thesis and Stalnaker semantics are incompatible. Stefan Kaufmann has proposed (for reasons largely independent of the triviality theorems) a revised version of Adams’ thesis, which the chapter calls Kaufmann’s thesis. The chapter proves that combining Kaufmann’s thesis with Stalnaker semantics leads to ‘local triviality’ results, which seem just as absurd as the original triviality results for Adams’ thesis.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the philosophical question of whether aesthetic judgments have truth value or are simply subjective matters of opinion. Whether or not such judgments do have any objective basis, lay people believe that such judgments have no objective basis, classifying them as mere matters of opinion. What then determine our aesthetic preferences? Psychologist James Cutting aims to show that the answer is familiarity: the more familiar we become with a work, the more we value it, and the more we value it, the more we look at it, deepening our familiarity. An alternative interpretation of Cutting’s research is put forward: works make it into the canon because they are of higher objective quality than works that did not make it into the canon. This would explain why some works have withstood the test of time, and have been and continue to be valued for centuries by people from many different artistic cultures.

Abstract:
Not Just Play: Summer Camp and the Profession of Social Work offers the only book written in many decades that focuses on the relationship between social work and the summer camp movement. Is camp just play or more? This volume responds with a comprehensive treatment of this underappreciated field of practice. In addition to updating their knowledge, social workers, students, and camp professionals will benefit froem the book’s exploration of many perspectives on this subject. The text features four sections. An introduction to underlying concepts is followed by a historical perspective on the profession’s significant involvement in the development of nonprofit camps. The third section examines ways in which social workers contribute to camps: providing skilled practitioners for a range of key roles, serving as venues for research and recruitment to the profession, and providing a milieu for growth through group membership. The concluding section explores the myriad of opportunities offered by today’s camps for social workers and social work students. Not Just Play offers several distinctive and unique features. Although scholarly research is a hallmark of the book, case vignettes are incorporated into many chapters. All comprise either first-person contributions or use primary source material. In addition, numerous quotations gathered from interviews and online questionnaires are incorporated into the text, many from well-known social workers citing the impact of their camp involvement. The book will inspire its readers to incorporate the peaceful, invigorating, growth experiences of summer camp and its environs with their client systems and—perhaps—themselves.

Pachana, Nancy A., Victor Molinari, Larry W. Thompson, and Dolores Gallagher-Thompson, eds. Psychological Assessment and Treatment of Older Adults. Hogrefe Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1027/00571-000.

Full text
Abstract:
Mental health practitioners are encountering an ever-growing number of older adults and so an up-to-date and comprehensive text addressing the special considerations that arise in the psychological assessment and treatment of this population is vital. This accessible handbook does just that by introducing the key topics that psychologists and other health professionals face when working with older adults. Each area is introduced and then the special considerations for older adults are explored, including specific ethical and healthcare system issues. The use of case examples brings the topics further to life. An important feature of the book is the interweaving of diversity issues (culture, race, sexuality, etc.) within the text to lend an inclusive, contemporary insight into these important practice components. The Pikes Peak Geropsychology Knowledge and Skill Assessment Tool is included in an appendix so readers can test their knowledge, which will be helpful for those aiming for board certification in geropsychology (ABGERO). This an ideal text for mental health professionals transitioning to work with older clients, for those wanting to improve their knowledge for their regular practice, and for trainees or young clinicians just starting out.

Abstract:
Just as we often hear the unsupported claim that any kid could have made a work of abstract expressionism, we also often hear the claim (equally unsupported) that arts education makes our kids smarter. This is a claim about alleged transfer of learning from the arts to a non-arts outcome. Arts-infused schools, it is said, will raise academic achievement and standardized test scores. Music lessons will raise a child’s IQ. Research discussed here tests these claims, showing that they are unsubstantiated. We will have to look elsewhere for the value of an arts education. The more likely outcomes of quality arts education are not IQ and test score improvements but rather broad habits of mind—learning to observe closely, learning to envision, learning to explore and learn from mistakes, learning to stick with something over time, and developing the habits of critique and evaluation and reflection on one’s process.
