Larson, Dana Elizabeth. "Feeling Sad? Maybe You are Just Uncertain! A Predictive Test for Depression." TopSCHOLAR®, 2013. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1318.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study examined the relationship between depression and uncertainty within the stress-diathesis model. Depression is a mental health disorder that is wide spread within our society. However, few causes of this disease have been able to be identified. Studies in uncertainty have shown that it is a major stressor in day-to-day life. Previous research has shown that individuals with high levels of uncertainty show higher levels of depression. The stress-diathesis model, a model originally developed to explain differences in development of schizophrenia, provides a theoretically meaningful way to combine these two concepts. The model states that a person who is likely to develop a disease has an internal mechanism, a diathesis, that will be triggered upon presentation of a stressor. This study tested the idea that uncertainty can be used as a stressor to activate diathesis within an individual, aiding in the prediction of depression. In total, 163 participants were randomly assigned one of three conditions, an uncertainty threat, an affirmation condition, and a control condition. Participants were given pre and post independent variable measures of depression and anxiety. Findings suggest that uncertainty activated negative emotions differentially within the participants, resulting in higher levels of negative affects after the uncertainty threat, especially for participants who already scored relatively higher on depression indicators. These results hint at a possible understanding of why depression rates and diagnosis rates of mental health issues rise during economic downturn and other times of strong uncertainty.

Gerde, Virginia Woods. "The Design Dimensions of the Just Organization: An Empirical Test of the Relation Between Organization Design and Corporate Social Performance." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40520.

Full text
Abstract:
Although organization design to bring about corporate social performance (CSP) is a critical issue in the business and society field, little research has been conducted. This study is an empirical test of the general model of the just organization presented by Stephens and colleagues (1991; Stephens, et al., 1997). The theoretical development describes organizational design principles from John Rawls' (1971) Theory of Justice, chosen for its emphasis on economic organizations and structure, its emphasis on efficiency as well as justice, and its affinity with Max Weber's wertrational (or value rationality) social action category from Economy and Society (1978/1910). From the general model of the just organization and characteristic organizational design features (structural and processual) consistent with the general model, an ideal type of just organization is developed. The primary hypothesis is that the more an organization emulates the ideal type of the just organization, the better its social performance will be as measured by higher CSP ratings. The degree of similarity of design with the ideal-type profile of the just organization is measured by the Euclidean distance, or summary distance metric, of the sample organization's profile to the ideal-type profile. The methodology utilizes surveys of corporations for organizational design features and the CSP ratings from the Kinder, Lydenberg, and Domini, Inc., social ratings database. The results indicate that there is no correlation between organization design and social performance when CSP is taken as an aggregate of all the stakeholder-firm relationships. However, when the specific stakeholder relationship is analyzed, there is an association between the presence of stakeholder-specific design features and higher CSP ratings along the stakeholder-specific social rating dimension.

Abstract:

The Study Island computer program is one of many highly used instructional programs in school districts nationwide; however, there is little independent research available that provides information about its impact on student achievement performance. This study used a descriptive comparative research design to compare the mean gain scores of the semester that students received math instruction with Study Island to mean gain scores of the semester that students did not receive math instruction with the program to determine if a significant difference exists between the two semesters. The test scores from a sample of 124 ninth-grade math students from an economically disadvantaged suburban school district in a southeastern state were used. The results concluded that the mean gain scores from pretest to posttest of the semester that students used the Study Island program were significantly higher than that of the semester that students did not use the program.

Abstract:

"Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories translated into Portuguese : contexts and text." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1999. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4874/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is twofold: to present a translation into Portuguese of Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling informed by a consideration of textual, contextual and extratextual parameters; and to treat some key issues In Translation Theory and practice which have arisen out of the process of translating the text. The thesis is divided into two parts: Part One, the Introduction; and Part Two, the Translation. In Chapter One of Part One, the evolution of the reception of Kipling's oeuvre is summarised. His work became controversial, with a discrepancy between critical reservation and public acclaim. Against this background, the writings intended primarily for children form an exception. Critical response to this category, although restricted, has generally supported the favourable view of the public. Among the works most highly praised has been Just So Stories. This favourable, although scarce, attention suggests that a detailed critical examination of the text is essential to a full understanding of Kipling's work. Consequently, Just So Stories is considered in terms of its origins, critical reception, style, literary affiliations and possible sources. General points are illustrated by case studies drawn from the text. In Chapter Two, the complex factors which determine what works are translated are summarised. In contemporary Portugal, children's literature publishing is flourishing, and Kipling is represented almost exclusively as a children's author. So, a balanced view of his work is inaccessible to the Portuguese reader. Even within the field of children'S literature, Kipling is not faithfully represented. The only published translation of Just So Stories into Portuguese is an unacknowledged adaptation of a French translation, itself an incomplete version of the original English text. This Portuguese version raises wide issues about the function and role of the translator, which are discussed in detail, with reference to the work of leading theorists of translation theory. In Chapter Three, in order to deal with the factors relevant to the translation of Just So Stories, a distinction is drawn between problems resulting from culture-specific differences and problems resulting from differences in the structures of the two languages. The problems are identified and analysed, and specific case studies drawn from the translation are adduced in illustration of the solutions adopted. As a result of the task of translating Just So Stories and of the study of Translation Theory texts, a view of translation as an approximation and of the translator as a visible interpreter has been reached. Part Two of this thesis consists of the translation of the twelve stories published in 1902, and of the two extra stories published later, 'The Tabu Tale' and 'Ham and the Porcupine'. Notes are kept to a minimum and are only intended to supplement the discussion of translation problems carried out in Chapter Three.

Abstract:
In modern society where time is of essence and almost everything is accessible with a click of a button, it is important that the information we take in is relevant, which is why automatized text summaries must contain necessary information and is understandable for the reader. This study aims to investigate if extracted and highlighted automatic text summaries are as comprehensive as the original text and the differences between extracted summary and highlight summary. The research will study the eyes movement during reading different types of texts, mainly focusing on fixation and saccades. The study found that readers tend to fixate more when reading summaries than an original text, which in turn lead to a longer time to read the text. For comprehensiveness there was no greater difference found between the summaries and the original text.

McGrath, Donna Lynette. ""Doing serious work or just playing?" : computer games in subject English." Queensland University of Technology, 2004. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15832/.

Full text
Abstract:
The central focus of this study is to look at the legitimacy of using computer games for textual study in subject English and to understand the value that non-traditional forms of narrative text can have in enhancing student learning and enjoyment. This thesis argues that when students are engaged in textual study that is pleasurable, learning outcomes can be enhanced. Narrative computer games are appropriately placed within the realm of popular cultural texts, therefore, this study is also located within a cultural studies field of inquiry. A range of theoretical lenses which are appropriate to this field, such as critical theory, poststructuralism, reader response theories and narratology, are drawn upon in order to provide different perspectives on knowledge, relationships of power, and elements of story. These multiple perspectives are combined to construct a methodological framework for my research that brings a richness to data analysis. In locating my study within this multi-dimensional methodological framework, it is possible to achieve a layering and interpretation of the many different responses to the binaries of “work” versus “play” inherent in my title. The study focuses on a junior secondary English class at a school in South-east Queensland. The students undertook a curriculum unit which used a critical literacy framework to study the narratives and cultural identifications inherent in a number of computer games. The participants’ responses to “play” within the classroom forms one facet of the study; the depth of narrative experience enabled by computer games forms another facet; and the final facet examines the cultural responses to newer forms of literacies. The study concludes that using narrative computer games as a form of text for study in subject English allows for an examination of new forms of literacies that are student-friendly. A hybridised form of communication and pedagogy is also suggested. Narrative computer games allow for pleasure and play in the classroom, albeit in a less traditional way, and a hybridised communication can allow students and teachers access to a dialogue that values the learning experiences associated with this textual medium.

The present study examines the performance of Mexican essayist and intellectual Justo Sierra Méndez (1848-1912), in the project of problematization and defense of a mestizo identity for Mexico in the late nineteenth century. The main point of the research is to analyze the categories listed by Sierra in his essays, starting from the assumptions of Cultural History, in order to systematize and provide the debate on mestizaje, identity and politics in nineteenth century Mexico. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine Sierra's thinking regarding the multicultural formation of the Mexican nation amid the social and political problems that besieged social thought in that country between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Abstract:
The present study comprises part of an ongoing research study investigating the effects 0 f cumulative mild head injuries 0 n Rugby Union p layers. The aim 0 f t he study was to ascertain whether there are neuropsychological effects of cumulative mild head injuries sustained during the rugby-playing careers of senior schoolboy rugby players. Participants were top-level rugby players from high schools in Grahamstown and Cape Town (n = 79) and non-contact sport controls of top-level field hockey players from the same schools (n = 58). Group mean comparisons across a battery of neuropsychological tests were carried out between the Total Rugby versus the Total Field Hockey group, and the Rugby Forwards versus the Rugby Backs group. Comparisons between Total Rugby versus Total Field Hockey revealed impaired performance by the rugby players on two tests of visuoperceptual tracking, namely Digit Symbol Substitution and Trail Making Test (Part A). For Rugby Forwards versus Rugby Backs, there were no consistent differences to support the expectation that forwards would perform worse than backs. Forwards performed more poorly than backs on WMS Associate Learning Subtest - Hard (Delayed Recall), whereas backs performed more poorly than forwards on Digits Backwards. This suggests that some individuals in the cohort were starting to exhibit verbal memory deficit, albeit not clearly in association with forward positional play. Overall, results of the present study provide tentative support for the hypothesis that school level rugby players are more susceptible to the effects of cumulative concussive and sub-concussive head injuries than are non-contact sport controls.

Abstract:
This master’s thesis investigates the contextualized relation between a reader and a text, in a non classroom-oriented situation. I am studying the questions of (a) in what way a persons education, personal experiences and opinions, and (b) how the text; its design (language) and message, holds a function in – and forms – the reader-text relation. At the same time I am testing the theoretical framework of Louise Rosenblatt, for the purpose of finding an adequate method to analyze this relation. Using semi-structured interviews, six participants have read and answered questions about two texts. Exploring the theories of Rosenblatt, the participants take part in an ‘experiment’ where their communicated text transactions are the crucial foundation of the study. The analysis of their statements has been carried out with the help of Rosenblatts’ efferent-aesthetic continuum, together with a field model of Berntsen and Larsen, which survey different types of text interaction. The result of the study shows, that we are able to conduct an analysis on the reader-text relation, with the help of the framework that the above-mentioned tools offer. The methods help us to identify and understand both individual and contextualized – as well as more general – elements in the reader-text relation. In this way, we can learn how the relation takes form and develops during the transaction. This comes to help in the larger issue of understanding reading as a phenomenon. Also, the study shows that Rosenblatt's theoretical framework serves a study conducted outside of a classroom-related context well.

Abstract:
This essay focus on the development and implementation of a model to evaluate consumer perceived value. Initially, itâs discussed the perceived value concept, its importance under strategy and marketing perspectives and its relation to price and quality. The model is presented, considering each step to be followed: perceived quality study of brands in the market; consumerâs perceptions of competitorâs prices; and the value map development, defined considering the relation quality/price for each brand in the market. The model applicability was tested in a soft drink category study in Fortaleza market, based in a survey with 400 consumers. The application shows that the model, built under consumerâs point of view, can provide a descriptive panel of competitorâs positions and relevant information to be used in market diagnoses. The information and the descriptive panel mentioned can be useful, not only in strategic analyses, but also in price formulations.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to demonstrate how the expansion of instructive powers of the judge, under the collective process, is an appropriate mechanism to densify access to the legal system, calling it the attributes of equity and effectiveness. To give support to this proposal, it is through the theoretical contributions of post-positivism as a promising paradigm proper legal foundation, through the legal argument at the time that it reveals an instrument of control and improvement of judicial decisions. On the other hand, the proposal places the collective protection in the second renewals wave of civil procedure, describing the extra-legal obstacles to access to jurisdiction and analyzes the constitutional postulate in its material dimension, pointing out the risk of its sacredness and its negative impact on the protection of collective goods. The collective process is raised to the status of an autonomous branch of the civil process, composing a microsystem endowed with natural principles. When entering your analysis describes its social and political relevance, underlying having a society permeated by massed relations. As a theoretical reference the expansion of instructive powers leaned over the device and inquisitorial systems. This polarization emerges a discussion of the role of the judiciary. We propose a new perspective of judicial action, more dynamic and embedded in the social environment that surrounds it, a position aligned with the publicist view of the process. In this context it works with a new process model, cooperative, a convergent analysis with collective protection, enhancing its democratic foundation and its contribution to the delivery of a fair and appropriate remedy. The powers are described in kind, highlighting the paradigms in consumeristas and environmental labors. The right to trial was submitted to a constitutional reading to support their investment and modulation inspired by the nature of the legal interests at stake. The theory of dynamic distribution is presented as strengthening the judicial action in favor of the effectiveness of collective action. They are faced limits to this outburst, with the goals of the constitutional process principles. Given these assumptions, the outlook point-of attracting organized civil society to make use of collective actions, from the strengthening of judicial functions aimed to eradicate the barriers of access to the differentiated protection.

Abstract:
All of us spend over three quarters of our lives in the postprandial state. Still, more attention has been dedicated to the study of the fasting metabolism than to the impact of the postprandial state on health.Scientific evidence supports that an optimum diet for health requires consideration of the glycaemic impact of foods in preference to consideration of carbohydrate content alone. An important determinant of the glycaemic impactof our diets is starch, which plays a key role in human nutrition, supplying up to 50% of the total energy intake. If it is clear that the digestion rate of starch-rich foods is an important determinant of their glycaemic impact, the contribution of each digestive stage to this process remains controversy. To better understand the factors that can influence the glycaemic response to starch-rich foods, and to identify new strategies to attenuate the glycaemic impact of starch-rich diets, it is essential to expand our understanding of thedigestive process of starch. The aims of this PhD were to study the digestionof starch-rich meals (bread and pasta), to reevaluate the contribution of salivary amylase using semi-dynamic in vitro digestions, and to conduct a human study to determine the effect of drinks (lemon juice and tea) on: the glycaemic response to bread, ad libitum intake, and gastric digestion assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our results provide scientific rationale for the development of a simple and effective strategy to reduce the glycaemicresponse to starch-rich foods in everyday-life meals

Abstract:
This research explores the hypothesis that methods from decision theory and machine learning can be combined to provide practical solutions to current manufacturing control problems. This hypothesis is explored by developing an integrated approach to solving one manufacturing problem - the optimization of die-level functional test. An integrated circuit (IC) is an electronic circuit in which a number of devices are fabricated and interconnected on a single chip of semiconductor material. According to current manufacturing practice, integrated circuits are produced en masse in the form of processed silicon wafers. While still in wafer form the ICs are referred to as dice, an individual IC is called a die. The process of cutting the dice from wafers and embedding them into mountable containers is called packaging. During the manufacturing process the dice undergo a number of tests. One type of test is die-level functional test (DLFT). The conventional approach is to perform DLFT on all dice. An alternative to exhaustive die-level testing is selective testing. With this approach only a sample of the dice on each wafer is tested. Determining which dice to test and which to package is referred to as the "optimal test problem", and this problem provides the application focus for this research. In this study, the optimal test problem is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision model that is evaluated in real time to provide answers to test questions such as which dice to test, which dice to package, and when to stop testing. Principles from decision theory (expected utility, value of information) are employed to generate tractable decision models, and machine learning techniques (Expectation Maximization, Gibbs Sampling) are employed to acquire the real-valued parameters of these models. Several problem formulations are explored and empirical tests are performed on historical test data from Hewlett-Packard Company. There are two significant results: (1) the selective test approach produces an expected net profit in manufacturing costs as compared to the current testing policy, and (2) the selective test approach greatly reduces the amount of testing performed while maintaining an appropriate level of performance monitoring.
