Abstract:
The just noticeable difference (JND) model reflects the visibility limitations of the human visual system (HVS), which plays an important role in perceptual image/video processing and is commonly applied to perceptual redundancy removal. However, existing JND models are usually constructed by treating the color components of three channels equally, and their estimation of the masking effect is inadequate. In this paper, we introduce visual saliency and color sensitivity modulation to improve the JND model. Firstly, we comprehensively combined contrast masking, pattern masking, and edge protect

A block-level perceptual image compression framework is proposed in this work, including a block-level just noticeable difference (JND) prediction model and a preprocessing scheme. Specifically speaking, block-level JND values are first deduced by utilizing the OTSU method based on the variation of block-level structural similarity values between two adjacent picture-level JND values in the MCL-JCI dataset. After the JND value for each image block is generated, a convolutional neural network–based prediction model is designed to forecast block-level JND values for a given target image. Then, a

It has been known that human visual systems (HVSs) can be applied to describe the underlying masking properties for the image processing. In general, HVS can only perceive small changes in a scene when they are greater than the just noticeable distortion (JND) threshold. Recently, the cognitive resources of huma visual attention mechanisms are limited, which can not concentrate on all stimuli. To be specific, only more important stimuli will react from the mechanisms. Many studies have dealt with the interrelationships between both olfactory and trigeminal systems but a poorly explored question concerns the role of each system in the detection processes, especially in the just noticeable difference (JND). The aim of this study was to investigate variations in JNDs for three odorants in relation to their trigeminal component, i.e. low, middle, high. The results indicated that the higher the trigeminal component, the lower the JND, suggesting a better capacity to perceive intensity changes for pungent odorants than for relatively pure odorants.
