Abstract:
The article analyzes Juvenal’s use of Democritean material in his tenth Satire. The famous juxtaposition of laughing Democritus and weeping Heraclitus (which popularized and perpetuated the image of contrasting philosophers) is habitually interpreted in terms of Juvenal’s poetic strategy, as indicating the shift in the tone of his satires and the change of Juvenal’s stance from the anger as the dominant emotion of his earlier satires to laughter and irony of the later ones. There is a tendency to assume that the totality of Democritean material in Juvenal 10 derives solely from Seneca. However, close reading of the concluding lines of the Satire suggests a different argumentative strategy and deeper engagement with Democritus’ thought by Juvenal. The comparison with Pseudo-Hippocratic ‘epistolary novel’ suggests Cynic diatribai as the source of the Democritean material in Juvenal 10.

Abstract:
The implications of the persona theory pose a problem for the interpretation of Juvenal's early satires, because it presents the satirist as intent on nullifying his didactic stances. This leaves us with an unsatisfactory conclusion that excises Juvenal's persistent treatment of themes consistent with contemporaneous authors who were similarly engaged in blackening the reputations of the famous dead. This article argues that a strict application of persona theory isolates Juvenal's satirist from his volatile contemporary climate by excluding him from the reality that these authors—similarly directing their works to the past—were unabashedly writing only after the tyrant was safely dead. Tacitus and Pliny had lamented the servility and silence that predominated during Domitian's reign, in which the Roman world endured fifteen years of terror without uttering a word. Into this literary milieu Juvenal announces his satirist, who begins with an echo of that silence: semper ego auditor tantum? With the death of Domitian and a new atmosphere that permitted the defamation of the deceased, Juvenal injects his venomous voice into the mix, taking advantage of contemporary literary appetites that allowed for the punishment, no matter how belated, if not of the person then of the guilty one's memory. Any evaluation of Juvenal's satiric project must be firmly rooted in this, his most immediate, context.

Abstract:
Abstract Species limits in the genus Plectrophenax have been difficult to assess. McKay’s Buntings (Plectrophenax hyperboreus) are very similar both morphologically and behaviorally to Snow Buntings (P. nivalis). However, their breeding ranges are allopatric, and there is limited evidence of gene flow. The juvenal plumage of McKay’s Buntings has never been described as different from that of Snow Buntings. Comparison of a series of McKay’s Buntings in juvenal plumage with a series of Snow Buntings in juvenal plumage showed clear differences between the two forms. We used color spectrophotometry to quantify the differences between the two taxa in two areas of the body that appeared to be consistently different, the throat and back. The relative magnitude of the difference between McKay’s and Snow buntings was greater than homologous differences between two subspecies of Snow Bunting (P. n. nivalis and P. n. townsendi). Four out of six variables were significantly different between McKay’s and Snow buntings, whereas none of the variables were significantly different between the two subspecies of Snow Bunting. Bonferroni corrected t-tests of sexual dimorphism and regression of the variables against year of collection showed that these factors were not associated with these differences. Discriminant analysis accurately separated 100% of the specimens into their respective groups. These differences are notable given the evolutionarily conservative nature of juvenal plumage. Our results support continued recognition of McKay’s Bunting as a species and reconfirm the use of juvenal plumage to help determine species limits. Abstract:
This paper argues that the shipwreck scene in Juvenal 12 should be read as another exploration of the satiric ‘sketch’ offered in the proem to Lucretius,De rerum natura2: a thematic response to and exploration of the scene of troubles at sea in the Lucretian proem. The beleaguered sea-merchant Catullus should not have gone sailing at all – but he responds to trouble as an Epicurean would recommend. Juvenal 12 displays Epicurean conceptions of friendship and sacrifice, and an allusion to a storm scene in Persius 6 (itself intertextually connected to Lucretius’ proem) confirms the satiric importance of Lucretius in Juvenal's passage.

Abstract:
For a defence of ‘crudum’ against Courtney's strictures, see the reviews by Goodyear and Reeve. I am presently concerned not with the unresolved crux in verse 144, but with the medical reason for the death of the glutton. Galen (xix. 692–3 K), quoted by Mayor, warned that one should not bathe after eating ἵνα μ μϕραξις κατ νεϕρὺς κα ἦπαρ γνηται. More recently, Courtney ad loc. has quoted Persius 3.98ff. and has attributed the death to ‘apoplexy’, which in more modern parlance is called a ‘stroke’ or a ‘cerebral haemorrhage’. What Persius and Juvenal are actually describing is not a stroke but what was formerly known as ‘acute indigestion’ and is now called a ‘heart attack’, as indeed ought to have been obvious from ‘nescio quid trepidat mihi pectus’ at Persius 3.88, and ‘tange, miser, uenas et pone in pectore dextram’ at 3.107. As Duff says, ‘the natural and ordinary time for bathing was just before the cena, but the gluttons of this time had discovered that digestion was temporarily promoted by the unhealthy practice of bathing in very hot water immediately after the meal’. Modern medical research has shown why this practice was very unhealthy indeed. As a meal is digested, the pulse rate is elevated, and bathing in hot water increases it even further. The consumption of alcohol, such as that described at Persius 3.92–3 and 99–100, would further accelerate the heart beat. The synergistic effect of these three circumstances, digesting a heavy meal, metabolising a large dose of alcohol, and bathing in hot water, was liable to cause a heart attack in an overweight man whose arteries were clogged with cholesterol.

Abstract:
The persona theory has been applied to various branches of Latin poetry, but is incomplete without also considering both audience and, where relevant, addressee. By extension it may be seen that not only addressees, but also characters talked about mould the style of a speaker, and ancient rhetorical precept and practice confirm this. This study concerns all the major characters in Juvenal's satires who have such an effect on the author's persona. In a literary work the background to such characters must somehow be given to the audience: in a play, by the context; in non-dramatic work, by the use of known characters or character-types made recognisable by, inter alia, the conventional or verbal associations of their names. This study therefore contains a prior investigation into the ways in which Juvenal signals aspects of his theme or treatment by means of the names of such characters.

This essay proposes a another reading on indigenous authorship literature published in Brazil through the production by cacique Juvenal Payayá. Whose productions thematize on the recovering process from the land, the construction of the narrative presents at the indigenous way of writing about themselves, as well as questioning the place designated to the literature produced by these authors. In this scenario, I intend to present a discussion about the indigenous authorship literature, analyzing Payayá´s literature productions. The political/literary production by Juvenal Payayá highlights a self-knowledge and simultaneously reopens theoretical discussions that incorporates a literary and political autonomy, emphasizing the Payayá Peoples’ place into the indigenous history and into the Brazilian literary history, because, just like other innumerous indigenous tribes in the Brazilian Northeast, the Payayá people dealt with several territorial displacements in order to survive. Hence, I have gotten interested throughout this path in how Juvenal Payayá innovates by dislocating the indigenous authorship literature representation which is consolidated, in general, as mythological, and designated it to places where this literature is considered “less important”. Therefore, Juvenal Payayá elucidates a new arrangement to the indigenous authorship literature and exposes to his reader new thematic possibilities when produces a literature that transforms itself into daily scenes. Thus, Payayá presents an indigenous authorship literature as a Payayá People´s reaffirmation, an ethical recognition, a recovering of the land and a written that transforms itself beyond the indigenous myth literature.

Abstract:
(A)masculinidade Romana; 5. This dissertation is based on the comparative analysis of the works of Martial and Juvenal and its main objective is to highlight the burlesque and satirical nature that is attached to them, as well as the timeless(ness) and didactic and pedagogical dimension of their words. So, this analysis proceeds from both authors’ approach to common topics in the field of the representation of the imperial society of the 1st century AD. The assignment is divided into two parts: 1. Contextualization and circumstances; 2. Everyday life in Rome. The first part is then divided into two chapters: 1. The burlesque spirit and the satirical spirit; 2. Apologia pro opera suo, and the second part is divided into four chapters: 3. Modus Vivendi Romani: Pleasures and Distractions in Rome; 4. Roman Masculinity (ness); 5. The feminine condition and its position within Rome; 6. Clientelism and Patronage in the eyes of Martial and Juvenal. After the contextualization of the concepts burlesque and satirical, which is essentially grounded on the primitive Roman spirit; I approach the cultural, social, political and bibliographic circumstances that have better contributed to the understanding of the main differences / similarities between the nature, intentions strategies of discourse and importance of the works under discussion. In the second part, the authors’ comparative analysis of the representation of everyday life in Rome has mainly focused on four aspects, each one of them discussed in different chapters, as stated above: in the first, the authors’ global vision of Rome through the representation of the main amusements and distractions that please Romans and keep them busy; in the second, the morality /falsity that is attached to masculine behaviour; in the third, the invective to the woman and the position she holds regarding the social, affective and sexual relations; in the fourth, the patronage-clientelism as an institution and the social and moral values that define it. From this analysis we attest the affinities and the scope of a similar purpose in the works of Martial and Juvenal, in spite of their structural and nature differences. This dissertation also includes an Introduction and a Conclusion, Bibliography as well as a general Index and an Index auctorum et locorum latinorum.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article discusses the relationship between children's educational equipment and the urban context of the city of São Paulo between 1935 and 1985, a period in which public institutions called parks and children's corners lasted. The equipment was intended for the care of working-class children and young people and was designed by Mário de Andrade during his participation as São Paulo's Secretary of Culture. The objective is to recover the history of playgrounds and illustrate how the equipment distributed in the different areas of the city, mainly in places with an industrial vocation, implanted in large lots, in strategically located points and with relative visual permeability between the interior and the exterior, contributed to the appropriation and participation of the population in the social activities promoted by the municipality. The historiographic-based research is based on the argument that the deactivation of playgrounds due to the modernization of educational policies in the children's and youth area reflected in changes not only in pedagogical and social parameters, but also impacted urban relations and their articulation. with the immediate surroundings. The two case studies selected in Santo Amaro represent two distinct examples of uses after their deactivation. Keywords: Children's playground, working class neighborhood, Santo Amaro, public policy.

Abstract:
Ações desenvolvidas: campanha do dezembro vermelho — 232 testes realizados; PEG (privados de liberdade) — 416 testes; Carnaval Seguro — 244 testes; CAPS — 80 testes; Hospital Virmod — 68 testes; Campus UNICENTRO — 164 testes.

Abstract:
Social work and crime prevention are synergistically linked: crime prevention and treatment of offenders are an integral part of social policy, and solving social problems is a strong factor in crime prevention, which is why social work presents an important segment of the formal social response to crime. Social protection institutions have a particularly important role in combating juvenile delinquency. The paper analyzes the place and role of social work and social protection services in the formal reaction of society to juvenile criminality in the context of contemporary criminological knowledge about the etiology of juvenile delinquency. The situation, problems and perspectives of social work in the function of prevention of juvenile criminality in Serbia are especially analyzed.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objectives of the project for which substantial effort was put forth were to: 1) Verify the relationship between expression of a cDNA clone (HW103) and the rooting potential of reciprocally grafted cuttings of juvenile and mature lamina and petioles of Hedera helix L. 2) Detect rooting promoter fractions in exudates from the juvenile leaves of H. Helix by assaying for rooting with leaf petioles of juvenile and mature plants. 3) Isolate, purify and identify compounds which show activity in assays for rooting potential. Some objectives or aspects of the objectives of the original proposal were not pursued for the reasons put forth in the body of the report. The most significant findings of the project are: 1) The MS medium is a better medium than Romberg medium for performing the leaf petiole rooting assay. 2) HW103 gene expression is cell-type specific with higher levels of expression in mature than juvenile phase H. Helix petioles as evidenced by in situ hybridization which suggests a negative relationship between HW103 expression in specific cells involved in root initiation and the lack of rooting potential in mature petioles 3) HW103 gene expression may be lower in mature petioles which had been grafter to a juvenile H. Helix lamina than mature petioles that had been grafted to a mature lamina and this putative lower expression is related to formation of a higher number of roots. 4) HW103 gene expression is not related to auxin induced ethylene production. 5) Two distinct compounds that possess root initiation promoting activity can be detected mainly in diffusate of juvenile H. Helix leaves using mung bean hypocotyls and H. Helix leaf petioles in vitro. 6) H. Helix diffusate active fractions do not insistenlty promote rooting in avocado mini-cuttings. 7) Chemical identification of the active rooting compounds was not accomplished because of the death of Prof. Becker, one of the collaborators, and the resultant loss of his data. These results indicate that these may be a molecular basis for reduced rooting potential in mature H. Helix petioles and that there are diffusible (translocatable) compounds in juvenile H. Helix leaves which promote rooting in juvenile and mature H. Helix petioles and mung bean hypocotyls.
