Abstract:
Determining the physical and biological habitat variables that influence the abundance of juvenile salmonids in British Columbia streams will improve management practices. Habitat models are tools that provide insight into organisms’ habitat needs and provide a more efficient mechanism for estimating population abundance than direct measurement. Models have been developed for salmonids in other jurisdictions, but very few have included invertebrate drift (a primary food source for juvenile salmonids) as a predictive variable. This is because temporal and spatial variation of drift abundance ar

Through the implementation of in vivo feeding trials, the efficacy of three wheat gluten (WG) products, vital (Amytex®), hydrolysed (Merripro®) and soluble hydrolysed (Solpro®) wheat gluten as replacement of soy protein concentrate, and scFOS prebiotic (Profeed®) supplementation were analysed to assess their impacts on intestinal health and production of juvenile rainbow trout. Microbial community analysis in experiment one revealed a degree of diet based modulation with 7.5% and 15% inclusions of wheat gluten (WG) products. Juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss stocked into mid-elevation reservoirs in Utah are vulnerable to predation from piscivorous fish and birds. I determined how effectively juvenile trout used cover to avoid these predators by (1) direct observations (snorkel transects) of habitat selection in two reservoirs and (2) measurements of survival and growth rates in a pond experiment where adult brown trout Salmo trutta were predators. Observations of juvenile trout were conducted within five weeks of stocking in 1988 and 1989. During the day, juvenile trout were abundant in complex inshore ha

Abstract:
Territoriality is thought to be an important mechanism of population regulation in stream-dwelling salmonids. Since territory size can limit salmonid abundance, describing the exact relationship between territory size and important environmental variables, such as food abundance, is crucial to understanding the role that territoriality plays in regulating population size. The threshold model of feeding territoriality predicts that: (1) territories will occur between a lower and upper threshold of food abundance, and (2) the frequency of territorial aggression peaks at intermediate levels of f

Despite a wealth of research on territoriality and population regulation in stream dwelling salmonids, most studies have focused on manipulations of food abundance alone, or else have simultaneously manipulated space and food abundance, but used population densities far outside the range of natural densities. No experiments have tested the effects of population density on territory size and individual behaviour in salmonids over a range of realistic densities, while keeping all other factors equal. Hence, I manipulated population density of juvenile rainbow trout at five levels (two, four, eig

Abstract:
Selenium (Se) is known to cause chronic toxicity in aquatic species. In particular, dietary exposure of fish to selenomethionine (SeMet), the primary form of Se in the diet, is of concern. Previous studies reported that chronic exposure to elevated dietary SeMet altered swimming performance, aerobic metabolism, and energy and endocrine homeostasis in adult fish. However, little is known about the direct effects of dietary SeMet exposure in juvenile fish. Therefore, the overall objective of this thesis was to investigate sublethal pathophysiological effects of subchronic dietary SeMet expos

The major objectives of this research were to examine the bioaccumulation parameters [depuration rates (kd), half life (t1/2) and biomagnification factor (BMF)] of individual isomers of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD, C12H18Br6) in fish and to test the hypothesis of in vivo bioisomerization. This was done by exposing three groups of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) to food fortified with known concentrations of an individual diastereoisomer (α, β, γ) for 56 days (uptake phase) followed by 112 days (depuration phase) of unfortified food. Accurate measurements of energy content and body composition are essential to effectively assess the well-being of fish. The killing of the individual negates the ability for repeated measures on the same individual, and also suppresses compositional studies involving endange

Hypoxic condition is a naturally occurring environmental stressor in aquatic ecosystems. However, due to modern anthropocentric activities, hypoxia has been increasing in prevalence and severity. Rainbow trout, a keystone species in many North American lakes, is hypoxia intolerant. As a result, this species is of particular concern when studying the effects of hypoxia on an organism’s physiological functioning. Chronic starvation was used as a tool to induce metabolic depression to determine the effect that depressed metabolic rate had on hypoxia tolerance. Juvenile rainbow trout were de
