Celliers, Cindy. Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53035.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Juvenile offenders have certain characteristics, which separate them from the law abiding young people. These characteristics, together with the subcultures inside prison in which they become socialized, can cause dysfunctional development, which in turn can lead to recidivism. To approach this client system and plan intervention according to the ecological perspective, the social worker needs to be equipped with a certain knowledge base. Firstly, knowledge is necessary about the profile of the juvenile offender. Secondly, the social worker has to understand the impact that a prison environment can have on the juvenile. Thirdly, it is also important that the worker knows how these factors can influence the intervention process and also be aware of different methods to strengthen the social functioning of the juvenile in pnson. This study endeavours to create a scientifically based framework for the development of a strategy for intervention with the juvenile offender, in order to bring about appropriate social functioning and by doing this, reduce recidivism. The research includes aspects of all three the recognized types of research, namely: exploratory, descriptive and explanatory. The profile of the juvenile offender, as well as ways in which the prison environment impacts on his development was determined by means of interviews and described in terms of the effect it might have on the intervention process. The respondents consisted of 11 ex juvenile offenders. Conclusions and recommendations were made which focussed, amongst others, on the various phases in the group work process and the development of knowledge regarding the juvenile offender. This research report can be utilized by social workers for effective intervention with juvenile offenders in prison.

Associated to punk subculture and to punk hardcore music, emerges in the 1980?s the Emocore subculture (term that means Emotional Hardcore), that intended reformulate the image of violence and lack of commitment once reproduced by punk, broaching subjects about respect for feeling and personal conflicts, redeeming punk rock esthetics. Emocore takes space in society as a subculture and it is taken by media industry as a consumption?s market possibility, reproducing among teenagers an identity marked by fashion tendencies, styles and own tastes to group that mention to legacy of punk and rock (preference for black, All Star sneakers and accessories such as studs) and to tendencies defined by fashion (long bangs, colored hair, make-up for boys), according to mass media purposes. Besides, young emos present exacerbation of affective statements between pairs, melancholy and sadness. Due to esthetics and behavior opposite to what is socially given, they end up being targets of social stigma, expressed through moral or physical violence acts. In this perspective, it was noticed the reduction of emo group in places of social contact, such as shopping center and local squares. After the interview achievement with ex-emos, it was found identity?s fluidity among teenagers that diversifies themselves for what is presented as consumption?s and lifestyle?s possibility by phonographic industry. It was quoted points of Emocore subjective construction, like strengthening of fraternal bounds, emotionalism as element of group identification, suffering, violence, stigma, sexuality, ?emodinha? and different esthetics. Involved with all that, there is the musical element, constantly redeemed on speeches of interviewed teenagers as the model for their identifications. Concluding, Emotional Hardcore in the 2000?s was a fashion phenomenon, an youth identity based on game of influences of mass media.

Full textJuvenile delinquency is a big problem in Sweden according to the news media. The newsreports that violent crime among youths is occurring frequently, now more than ever before. Drug use, vandalism, abuse, and organized crime is rampant among the criminal youth. The Swedish justice system is powerless to resolve this issue, as reoffenders are a common occurrence among the criminal youth. It is only a matter of time before you fall victim to this criminal wave. Is this the reality we live in, or is what the news media wants to portray by constructing their own version of reality? The findings of this study show that the news media are pursuing their own agenda and are using an occurring set of discourses as their means. The authors of this study are, through a critical discourse analysis, investigating how the news media are describing the criminal youth in Sweden.
Mooney, Katie. ""Die Eendstert Euwel" and societal responses to white youth sub-cultural identities on the Witwatersrand, 1930-1964." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/2065.
Full textThe term ‘ducktail’ was originally used to denote a hairstyle. In the Post World War Two period, ‘Ducktail’ became associated with a rebellious white youth gang subculture, which rose to prominence in the major urban centres throughout South Africa. Societal responses to the subculture’s identity resulted in the generation of a moral panic which demonised the movement branding it as – amongst other things – the ‘eendstert euwel’ [ducktail evil]. The major aim of this thesis is to account for the way in which members of the subculture constructed and practised their class, racial, ethnic, gendered and generational identities whilst highlighting how society responded to them. The relationship of conformity, conflict and control that emerged between the ducktails and more conventional members of society such as the authorities and academics is plotted. This relationship sets the context for the final part of the dissertation, which explores the moral guardians and rule creators that became involved in the designing of youth policies. Particular attention will be given to how the ‘problem of youth’ brought religion, working mothers, morality, the state of the nation and the preservation of white supremacy under question. In this process, the National Party government formulated policies to monitor, shape and construct an appropriate form of South African whiteness.

Full textIn r.he context of family instability, inadequate schooling, massive youth unemployment and severe residential overcrowding, juvenile delinquency became rampant in Witwatersrand townships during the 1930s. By the mid 1940s the I'tsotsis", a criminal, male-dominated youth gang subculture with its own distinctively urban style, ritual and language, had entrenched itself amongst urbanised township communities Tsotsis angrily rejected both hegemonic whlte middle class values and the apparently acquiescent culture of their parents. Tsotsi style, which drew heavily on American cinema imagery, expressed a denial of cultural consensus in urban society. Tsotsi gangs preyed materially off township residents and distanced themselves from political activity or community affairs. However, around 1959-60 tsotsis were attracted to the radical, machismo, aggressively anti-establishment politics of the Pan-Africanist Congress. The subculture dissolved during the 1960s as a result of police crackdowns, expanded state schooling and improved employment opportunities for urban youth.

Full textThis study proposes to investigate the contribution of skateboarding practice in the construction of identity in youth subcultures in the urban space. A historical overview of the practice of skateboarding in Portugal and around the world is made. Based on concepts such as identity (Giddens, 1997), subculture (Becker, 1991) and urban tribes (Maffesoli, 1998), the practice of skateboarding in urban contexts is contextualized, and to a profile of the skaters is drawn. To achieve these objectives, the methodology used triangulated several techniques, including document analysis, observation, interviews and life stories. Results indicate that the practice of skateboarding is a result of appropriation of urban spaces and the use of its architectural features; that appropriation is sometimes a source of social conflict. Most skaters in Portugal are young males who live in urban areas and belong to advantaged socio-economic groups. In terms of identity, the skaters are defined not only by the practice of a sport, but with specific aspects, such as behavior, language, attitudes and dynamics of interaction itself. The implications for youth studies and intervention will be discussed.
