Abstract:
Despite recent efforts to characterize innovative individuals within a species, we still know very little about the ontogeny of innovation ability. A number of studies have found that innovation rates are correlated with personality traits, such as neophilia and exploration. Juvenile birds are frequently more neophilic and explorative, yet few studies have found evidence of age-related differences in innovative problem-solving success. Here, we show consistently higher innovation efficiency in juveniles of a wild, omnivorous parrot species across a variety of tasks and contexts. We tested 104 kaka ( Nestor meridionalis ), ranging in age from four months to 13 years. Twenty-four individuals participated in all three of our problem-solving tasks, two of which involved a familiar feeder and one an entirely novel apparatus. Juveniles were the most efficient problem-solvers in all three tasks. By contrast, the adults’ success was context dependent and limited to the novel apparatus, which did not require modification of a pre-learned behavioural response. This suggests greater behavioural flexibility in the juvenile birds, who also showed higher persistence and exploratory diversity than adults. These traits may enable young kaka to discover efficient foraging techniques, which are then maintained throughout adulthood.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A laboratory assessment of the susceptibility of Dasyurus geoffroii to baits used to control foxes and dingoes was conducted using five types of non-poisoned baits: polony, fresh meat, meat dried by 50% and 70% of the original weight, and compressed beef crackle. Trials were designed to simulate the initial encounter of a bait by hungry wild juveniles and adults of both sexes, including lactating females. In overnight trials, juveniles and lactating females ate significantly more fresh meat per body weight (mean consumption: 23.7% for juvenile males, 21.5% for juvenile females, 23.1% for lactating females) than non-lactating adult females and adult males (combined mean, 18.3%). Maximum overnight bait consumption was 43% of body weight. These values greatly exceed those previously reported for other species of Dasyurus. Moist baits were eaten more rapidly and in larger amounts than drier baits. Seasonal factors lead to the prediction that the period when canid baiting can be conducted with the least danger to Dasyurus geoffroii is January-March.

Abstract:
Abstract We investigated the timing and pattern of the development of foraging skills in juvenile Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). Juveniles of known age, parentage, and in some cases sex were mist netted and tested in an aviary on Kent Island, an isolated island in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. Captive birds were exposed to three standardized and ecologically relevant foraging tasks: locating spittle bugs (Homoptera: Cercopidae) in spittle masses on goldenrod (Solidago rugosa) plants, small caterpillars under spruce (Picea glauca) bud scales, and beetle larvae under leaves. The feeding trials involved 33 juveniles aged 17–42 days, four independent juveniles whose precise ages were not known, and five adults for comparison. The performance of juvenile sparrows on all three tasks showed rapid improvement between 22 and 24 days of age. Thereafter, foraging proficiency (number of foraging attempts, number of prey obtained, foraging efficiency) did not improve significantly with age among juveniles; in fact, older juveniles performed as well as adults. Juvenile males obtained more prey items than juvenile females in aviary trials. Foraging proficiency in captivity was not a good predictor of survival to the following year, and it appeared not to be influenced by brood membership or parental age. The age at which foraging performance improved in captivity coincided with the age at which parents cease attending their fledglings in the field, suggesting that the duration of postfledging parental care may be determined by the speed at which juveniles can develop foraging skills.

Abstract:
Recidivism, and the factors related to it, remains a highly significant concern among juvenile justice researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. Recent studies highlight the need to examine multiple measures of recidivism as well as conduct multilevel analyses of this phenomenon. Using data collected in a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded Juvenile Justice-Translational Research on Interventions for Adolescents in the Legal System (JJ-TRIALS) cooperative agreement, we examined individual- and site-level factors related to 1-year recidivism among probation youth in 20 sites in five states to answer research questions related to how recidivism rates differ across sites and the relationships between individual-level variables and a county-level concentrated disadvantage measure and recidivism. Our findings of large site differences in recidivism rates, and complex relationships between individual and county-level predictors of recidivism, highlight the need for more nuanced, contextually informed, multilevel approaches in studying recidivism among juveniles.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Guidelines for maintenance treatment of juvenile bipolar disorder rely heavily on evidence from adult studies and relatively brief trials in juveniles, leaving uncertainties about optimal long-term treatment. We aimed to systematically review long-term treatment trials for juvenile bipolar disorder. Methods We analyzed data recovered by a systematic literature search using the PRISMA guidelines statement, through 2018, for peer-reviewed reports on pharmacological treatments for juvenile bipolar disorder lasting ≥24 weeks. Results Of 13 reports with 16 trials of 9 treatments (18.8% were randomized and controlled), with 1773 subjects (94.4% BD-I; ages 6.9–15.1 years), lasting 11.7 (6–22) months. Pooled clinical response rates were 66.8% (CI: 64.4–69.1) with drugs vs 60.6% (53.0–66.7) in 3 placebo-control arms. Random-effects meta-analysis of 4 controlled trials yielded pooled odds ratio (OR) = 2.88 ([0.87–9.60], P = .08) for clinical response, and OR = 7.14 ([1.12–45.6], P = .04) for nonrecurrence. Apparent efficacy ranked: combined agents >anticonvulsants ≥lithium ≥antipsychotics. Factors favoring response ranked: more attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, polytherapy, randomized controlled trial design, nonrecurrence vs response. Adverse events (incidence, 5.50%–28.5%) notably included cognitive dulling, weight-gain, and gastrointestinal symptoms; early dropout rates averaged 49.8%. Conclusions Pharmacological treatments, including anticonvulsants, lithium, and second-generation antipsychotics, may reduce long-term morbidity in juvenile bipolar disorder. However, study number, quality, and effect magnitude were limited, leaving the status of scientific support for maintenance treatment for juvenile bipolar disorder inconclusive.

Abstract:
Several studies have compared the criminal court sentences given to transferred juveniles with those given to adults, but this research has reported inconsistent findings. In addition, some research has found that mode of conviction can interact with offenders’ characteristics, resulting in stronger or weaker effects of these factors among defendants convicted at trials. The current study explores the direct effects of juvenile status on sentence severity and whether these effects are conditioned by mode of conviction. Examination of data from Florida circuit courts ( N = 1,107,233) shows that transferred juveniles are less likely to be incarcerated than adults but are given longer incarceration sentences. Interaction analyses reveal that these disparities are weaker among trial cases than among plea cases.

Abstract:
Background Bite marks attributed to adult Tyrannosaurus rex have been subject to numerous studies. However, few bite marks attributed to T. rex have been traced to juveniles, leaving considerable gaps in understanding ontogenetic changes in bite mechanics and force, and the paleoecological role of juvenile tyrannosaurs in the late Cretaceous. Methods Here we present bite force estimates for a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex based on mechanical tests designed to replicate bite marks previously attributed to a T. rex of approximately 13 years old. A maxillary tooth of the juvenile Tyrannosaurus specimen BMR P2002.4.1 was digitized, replicated in dental grade cobalt chromium alloy, and mounted to an electromechanical testing system. The tooth was then pressed into bovine long bones in various locations with differing cortical bone thicknesses at varying speeds for a total of 17 trials. Forces required to replicate punctures were recorded and puncture dimensions were measured. Results Our experimentally derived linear models suggest bite forces up to 5,641.19 N from cortical bone thickness estimated from puncture marks on an Edmontosaurus and a juvenile Tyrannosaurus. These findings are slightly higher than previously estimated bite forces for a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex of approximately the same size as BMR P2002.4.1 but fall within the expected range when compared to estimates of adult T. rex. Discussion The results of this study offer further insight into the role of juvenile tyrannosaurs in late Cretaceous ecosystems. Furthermore, we discuss the implications for feeding mechanisms, feeding behaviors, and ontogenetic niche partitioning.

Abstract:
Ammonia has relatively toxic effects on fish and other aquatic organisms. This study examined whether juvenile silver catfish exposed to alarm substances released by conspecifics and predators in water with different ammonia levels modify their behaviour in response to the perceived risk of predation. We used juvenile catfish that were naive to predators. The fish were raised from the larval stage in the laboratory and kept in 40-L aquaria at waterborne NH3 concentrations of 0, 0.05, 0.1, or 0.2 mg L-1 for 10 days. The alarm substances used were predator odour and skin extract from conspecifics. The juveniles were transferred to 2-L aquaria for the antipredator and alarm reaction behavioural tests, which were performed on days 1, 5 and 10 after initial exposure to ammonia. The test aquaria contained a shelter at one end of the tank. The trials consisted of a 10-min prestimulus and a 10-min poststimulus observation period. The results of the study suggest that naive juvenile catfish are able to identify predators and skin extract from conspecifics by odour. In addition, waterborne NH3 levels modify the antipredator response of this species.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at analyzing how some cultural practices combined with music can act in the constitution of youth identities in the contemporaneity. These practices were lived by night high school students at Instituto de Educação, a public school in Porto Alegre in 2004, through a project named Tribe Project. For the constitution of the research theoretical referential I have performed some articulations between the field of youth sociology and the Cultural Studies, among others, and this way I have made up what I understand by youth(s), music and cultural practices in a specific school context. As research tools, I have used a participant observation, semistructured interviews, document analysis and photographic records To perform the study, I started to understand the knowing and the cultural practices as diverse actions and signification and resignification processes undertaken and/or lived by youngsters. This way, it was evident that these students’ knowing and experiences in the school environment are broader and more complex than the relationships established in the teaching-learning processes restricted to the classrooms. It is possible to consider the school environment as a productive place for socialization, for living together, for experiences and constant exchange of knowing between distinct youths. It was observed through empirical material the important role the music plays in the youngsters’ identification processes, in the different ways by which they create and recreate their groups of belonging/friendship- the Tribes- and in the forms from which they incorporate specific characteristics, definite musical preferences, and ways of dressing, ways of behaving and marking their own body.

Nowadays, intercultural communication is still a very interesting study area in the Language Didactics field. The permanent contact and interaction between people of different cultural realities may cause/originate daily misunderstandings and cultural shocks. Therefore, the main goal of this project is to understand whether didactic activities focused on the otherness are beneficial to the effective development of the openness to the Other and of the intercultural communicative competence. Furthermore, it is expected that it raises students’ awareness to the intra and intercultural diversity by providing a greater openness to otherness, through a didactic approach of a social phenomenon as current as is the case of urban tribes.

Abstract:
The current study aims to examine the interchangeable space configurations and identities produced by the emerging underground Christian movement. Situated within a broader field - in which it is bound to evangelists and young persons from other aesthetic affinity network the movement combines different clusters and religious manifestations. These cultural identitary representations regardless their visual, musical, ritualistic and bible doctrine distinctions are linked by one reason, which is, in fact, one ideal: bringing Christ to all urban juvenile cultures that are historically, a target of neglect and prejudice from catholic traditional churches or protestant parties. Therefore, they compose sacred heterotopias which reveal the new identifying, affiliation and religious ritual trends as well as the new commitment practices made by these subversive young persons. Guided by the community militancy idea, they symbolically fight against the institutionalism, the wild marketing and the impersonal aura that dominate the current Christian scenario. Thus, they look for answers through culture ways towards turmoil, radicalisms and other post-secular New Era disturbances, where the sacred Geography is inherent to individuals and where territoriality does not limit itself to the ecclesiastical authorities and temples. Using this sort of panorama, allows comprehending how emerging Christians arrange symbolic itineraries and religious places in order to simultaneously refurnish faith and reach the worlds captive.

Dimmock, Amanda. "Variation in wild stocks of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium australiense (Holthuis, 1950): Environmental influence on external morphology." Queensland University of Technology, 2004. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15959/.

Full text
Abstract:
Macrobrachium australiense is a common freshwater prawn found throughout most of eastern and inland Australia. Debate has been ongoing on the systematics of this species due to high morphological variation: past studies have relied on external morphology assessments to describe genetic relationships between populations. An individual's morphological phenotype results however, from an interplay of genetic factors, environmental, and interactions between genes and the environment. The current study examined the strength of genetic constraint on morphological traits in this species. Examination of over 1000 M. australiense museum specimens collected from across the species' extensive natural range, documented high phenotypic variation with no regional pattern of variation. Within regions, 88% of variation in morphological traits in mature males and juveniles was present between local rivers. Therefore, morphological variation is not structured at the regional level. If there is a strong genetic base to morphological variation then populations in a single river system must be evolving essentially in isolation. More intensive sampling within a single river system demonstrated high morphological variation in 600 M. australiense individuals from 18 populations within a geographically connected system. Populations separated by as little as 1km showed significant morphological differences in 50% of mature male traits. If morphological variation is primarily genetically based, then populations within a river system were evolving independently at a very fine spatial scale. This hypothesis was tested by breeding morphologically divergent populations of M. australiense in a controlled environment to isolate genetic influences on morphological variation. Low heritability for morphological traits in five divergent populations raised under identical environments established that there is no strict genetic control on morphological variation in these M. australiense populations. Morphologically homogenous offspring resulted from wild parents that had exhibited significant differences at 73% of traits examined. Therefore, the fundamental assumption that morphological variation in M. australiense is dictated by strict genetic control is not supported in these representative populations. Moreover, significant variation in 41% of morphological traits was produced by raising a single population at different environmental temperatures (28oC and 22 oC). A single homogenous stock of M. australiense should not produce morphologically divergent offspring if genetic factors are the major influence of phenotypic expression. Crossing of pure line divergent stocks resulted in hybrid offspring with significant differences in 50% of female morphological traits, whereas male offspring varied for only 31% of morphological traits. This result suggests that female morphological expression is affected more strongly by genetic factors than male offspring in this trial. The growth and maturation of external morphological traits during development in M. australiense is under limited genetic constraint, especially in the later phases of growth. Only 17% of traits varied between juvenile stocks in the last three months of development when individuals were exposed to identical environmental conditions. Maturation size was homogenous, except for females in the absence of maturing males in divergent stocks exposed to identical environmental conditions. Females were much larger in size and shape of morphological traits in the absence of mature males in the population. Thus environmental factors strongly influence phenotypic expression of external morphology in M. australiense. Past problems with the taxonomy of this species are therefore understandable as many important traits used in systematics appear to be under limited genetic control. Past evolutionary studies based on morphological diversity in this species therefore may be unreliable as the traits used to identify divergent forms may not provide a true reflection of genetic divergence.

Abstract:
Paediatric or juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) is a rare autoimmune condition, differing from the adult form in terms of severity, organ manifestations, and a less striking female predominance. The diagnosis relies on the adult-derived American College of Rheumatology SLE classification criteria. Genetic, autoantibody, and host immune responses, characteristic of this disease, result in a clinically heterogeneous phenotype. A proportion of paediatric SLE patients will have evidence of a genetic deficiency known to be associated with SLE, such as C1q deficiency, and screening for these is required. A challenging diagnosis to make in the younger age group, the management of JSLE compared to adult-onset SLE requires special consideration towards the significant long-term consequences of the disease and treatment toxicity, combined with an onset during a fundamental time with regards to growth and development. A comprehensive, multidisciplinary team approach to the management of JSLE is essential. With a more severe phenotype and limited comorbidities, patients with JSLE represent an invaluable opportunity for investigating the pathogenesis. To date, clinical trials informing interventions in JSLE are very limited and treatment choices rely on the outcome of adult trials. Patient and family involvement in research to improve outcomes and understanding is essential. New treatments, including biological therapies, are becoming available for clinical use and new treatment combinations have been used to induce and maintain clinical remission.

Abstract:
Abstract.—Little is known about habitat requirements of juvenile flathead catfish Pylodictis olivaris. Previous studies indicate use of coarse substrates associated with riffle habitats in streams; however, limited information on microhabitat characteristics associated with habitat selection exists. To further our understanding of early life history habitat for flathead catfish, we used polyvinyl chloride half tubes (i.e., tubes cut in half longitudinally) of six different diameters (range, 13–76 mm) and depths (range, 25–152 mm) to simulate interstitial spaces provided by coarse substrates and determine (1) whether juvenile flathead catfish selected for interstice size, (2) relative importance of interstitial diameter and depth, and (3) if interstitial space size selection was related to fish body size. A total of 1,316 selection trials regarding interstitial diameter, depth, and the interaction of these characteristics was conducted using juvenile flathead catfish ranging in total length (TL) from 15 to 128 mm. Utilization of interstice diameters and depths was nonrandom (i.e., selection was occurring). Selection of interstice diameter was positively related to fish body size (i.e., total length), whereas all sizes of juvenile flathead catfish most often selected the greatest depth of interstitial space offered. We observed an ontogenetic shift in relative importance of interstice diameter and depth during interaction trials. Flathead catfish less than 40 mm TL selected for interstitial diameter, fish between 41 and 60 mm TL selected for both interstitial characteristics, whereas individuals larger than 60 mm TL selected for interstitial depth. Results of our study are among the first to identify microhabitat-scale characteristics that influence habitat selection by early life history stages of this species.

Abstract:
Juvenile scleroderma syndromes, including the systemic and the localized varieties, represent the third most frequent chronic rheumatic conditions in paediatric rheumatology after juvenile idiopathic arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Juvenile systemic sclerosis (JSSc) has a variety of clinical manifestations, sometimes different from the adult form. Children show a significantly less frequent involvement of all organs, except for arthritis and myositis which are slightly more common than in adults. Indeed, the overall clinical outcome is better. In most JSSc cases with fatal course, the disease progression is rapid due to the early involvement of internal organs. The recently proposed classification for JSSc enables earlier and more definite diagnoses and provides clear criteria to standardize the conduct of clinical trials. Juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS), also known as morphoea, is much more frequent than JSSc. It comprises a group of distinct conditions which involve the skin and subcutaneous tissues. They range from very small plaques of fibrosis involving only the skin, to diseases which may cause significant functional and cosmetic deformity, with a variety of extracutaneous features. Monitoring of JLS includes semiquantitative clinical scoring methods, a computerized skin score, infrared thermography, and high-frequency ultrasound. Treatment varies from topical glucocorticoids, calcipotriene, or phototherapy, as in circumscribed morphoea, to systemic drugs when there is a significant risk for disability, as in linear scleroderma and generalized or pansclerotic morphoea. A recent randomized controlled trial has confirmed the efficacy of methotrexate in these conditions or mycophenolate mofetil in refractory cases.

Abstract:
Juvenile polymyositis and dermatomyositis are inflammatory myopathies that affect muscle. Dermatomyositis also affects skin, and can have many extramuscular manifestations. Inflammatory myopathies are uncommon in childhood, with dermatomyositis occurring more than polymyositis. For this reason, published research has concentrated on juvenile dermatomyositis. The spectrum of disease severity ranges from mild cases that can recover completely without treatment, to multisystem inflammation that can be fatal. Treatments have improved over the decades, reducing mortality from 30% before the era of steroids, to less than 1% in the present day. Juvenile cases of dermatomyositis differ from those seen in adulthood, without tendency for associated malignancy, and a far greater incidence of calcinosis. Calcinosis can be deposited as small calcinotic lumps or as sheets of calcinosis. It is very difficult to treat and causes extensive morbidity, and depending on where the calcinosis is deposited, it can cause severe disability or even death. Over the last decade, international collaborative work has concentrated on developing disease activity and assessment tools for both adult and juvenile forms of myositis. This will enable more subjective study of these rare diseases in multinational cohort studies, and enable clinical trials to investigate drug treatments. This work led to the first international double-blind placebo controlled trial of treatment in both adults and children with dermatomyositis (using rituximab as the drug). Further international collaboration has led to the development of core outcome variables, a definition of disease flare, and ongoing work on classification criteria.

Abstract:
Musculoskeletal pain is a common symptom in inflammatory arthritides such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis; however, identifying the underlying pathological process is often challenging for health care providers due to the extensive differential diagnoses. In children with inflammatory arthritides, physical examination abnormalities including swelling and/or pain on movement and joint limitation accompany the pain at initial presentation. Control of disease activity through anti-inflammatories and other disease-modifying agents can limit disease progression and joint damage; however, pain may persist in spite of these measures. Optimal treatment of pain in juvenile idiopathic arthritis and related conditions is based on a biopsychosocial model, which addresses biological, environmental, and cognitive-behavioural factors. Analgesics such as opioids and neuropathic pain medications, in conjunction with other modalities such as pain coping skills training, aerobic exercise, and improved sleep hygiene may be appropriate in certain circumstances. Further research is needed to prospectively identify patients and families early in the course of disease who would benefit from additional support to optimize pain management and limit distress. In addition, future clinical trials should assess the impact of study interventions on pain as a primary endpoint, assessed independently from other response variables.
